  • High-temperature superconducting rotors offer advantages in terms of output-to-weight ratio and efficiency compared to conventional phase conduction motors or generators. The rotor can be cooled by conduction cooling, which attaches a cryocooler, and by refrigerant circulation, which uses circulating liquid or gas neon, helium and hydrogen. Recent work has focused on environmental issues and on high-temperature superconducting motors cooled with liquid hydrogen that can be combined with fuel cells. However, to ensure smooth supply and return of the cryogenic cooling fluid, a cryogenic rotational coupling between the rotating and stationary parts is necessary. Additionally, the development of a sealing structure to minimize fluid leakage applicable to the coupling is essential. This study describes the design and performance evaluation of a non-contact sealing method, specifically a labyrinth seal, which avoids power loss and heat load caused by friction in contact sealing structures. The seal design incorporates a spiral flow path to reduce leakage using centrifugal force, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted to analyze the flow path and rotational speed. A performance evaluation device was configured and employed to evaluate the designed seal. The results of this study will be used to develop a cryogenic rotational coupling with supply and return flow paths for cryogenic applications.

  • NUFLEX is a general purpose program for the analysis 3D thermo/fluid flow and pre/post processor in a complex geometry. NUFLEX is composed of various physical models, such as phase change(solidification/melting) and spray, MHD(Magneto Hydraulic Dynamics) models. It is possible to simulate continuous cast iron process and spray droplet breakup/collision phenomenon. For the verification of these models, compared with the experimental data and commercial CFD code's results. The results show good agreements with experimental and comercial CFD codes's results.

  • One of the most important factors in sailing yacht design is an accurate velocity prediction. Velocity prediction programs (VPPs) are widely used to predict velocity of sailing yachts. VPPs, which are primarily based on experimental data and experience of long years, suffer limitations applied in realistic conditions. Thus, in the present study, a high fidelity velocity prediction method using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is proposed. Using the developed method, velocity and motion of a 30 feet sloop yacht, which was developed by Korea Research Institute of Ship and Ocean (KRISO) and termed KORDY30, were predicted in upwind sailing condition.

  • It has been highly demanded to improve the accuracy of CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) methods for the assessment of the hydrodynamic performance of marine propellers in cavitating and non-cavitating flows. This paper presents a validation study on the numerical simulation of the tip vortex flow of a non-cavitating marine propeller SVA VP1304. The calculations are carried out by using the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) approach, where the Reynolds Stress Model(RSM) is used for turbulence closure. The present paper contains a grid dependence test for the propeller open water simulations and a special emphasis is placed on conducting a local grid adaptation on the blade tip and in the tip vortex to reasonably reproduce the velocity and the pressure in the tip vortex flow field. The numerical results are compared with the experimental validation data, which are published in the second International Symposium on Marine Propulsors 2011(SMP'11). The present numerical results show a reasonable agreement with the experiments.

  • Model ice forming process in ice tank needs several steps of seeding, freezing, tempering. In those process, one of the most important factors to affect the accuracy of experiment is the homogeneity of the ice thickness and the temperature. This paper investigated a computational and statistical method to assess the uniformity of the model ice. In addition, the different configurations of freezing systems were considered to improve the uniformity. Qualitative assessment using streamlines from the cooling units was carried out by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and the quantitative evaluations of the homogeneity were compared using the temperature distribution on the ice surface. In addition, multi species transport analysis is introduced to understand the circulation efficiency of cold air from the cooling units. As the results, optimized configurations were determined by adjusting the angles of vane in the cooling units.

  • In this study, aerodynamic analyses have been conducted for 4-Bladed Vertical-Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) configuration and the results are compared with experimental data. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation with LES turbulence model is solved for unsteady flow problems. In addition, the computation results by standard k-${\omega}$ and SST k-${\omega}$ turbulence models are also presented and compared. An experiment model of 4-Bladed VAWT model has been designed and constructed herein. Experimental tests for aerodynamic performance of the present VAWT model are practically conducted using the vehicle mounted testing system. Comparison results between the experiment and the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses are presented in order to show the accuracy of CFD analyses using the different turbulent models.

  • Wall functions have been widely used in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and can save significant computational costs compared to other near-wall flow treatment strategies. However, most of the existing wall functions were based on the asymptotic characteristics of near-wall flow quantities, which are inapplicable in complex and non-equilibrium flows. A modified wall function is thus derived in this study based on flow over a plate at zero-pressure gradient, instead of on the basis of asymptotic formulations. Turbulent kinetic energy generation ($G_P$), dissipation rate (${\varepsilon}$) and shear stress (${\tau}_{\omega}$) are composed together as the near-wall expressions. Performances of the modified wall function combined with the nonlinear realizable k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model are investigated in homogeneous equilibrium atmosphere boundary layer (ABL) and flow around a 6 m cube. The computational results and associated comparisons to available full-scale measurements show a clear improvement over the standard wall function, especially in reproducing the boundary layer flow. It is demonstrated through the two case studies that the modified wall function is indeed adaptive and can yield accurate prediction results, in spite of its simplicity.
