A Digital Transmitter/Receiver Module(DTRM), which is an essential part in active phased-array radar systems, generates a high heat density, and needs to be properly cooled for stable operation. A tile-type DTRM that is a stacking structure of multi-layer components was modeled with simplification and heat dissipation characteristics of the DTRM model were studied using computational fluid dynamics(CFD) simulations. Most of the heat was dissipated by the heat conduction through the cold plate, but the heat transfer by the forced convection on top of the DTRM also was found to play an important role in the thermal management. Under the given conjugated heat transfer environment, the DTRM was confirmed to secure a stable operating temperature range.
Vortex-Induced-Vibration (VIV) is one kind of the wind-induced vibrations, which may occur in the construction and operation period of bridges. This phenomenon can bring negative effects to the traffic safety or can cause bridge fatigue damage and should be eliminated or controlled within safe amplitudes. In the current VIV studies, one available mitigation countermeasure, the horizontal flow-isolating plate, shows satisfactory performance particularly in PI shaped bridge deck type. Details of the wind tunnel test are firstly presented to give an overall description of this appendage and its control effect. Then, the computational-fluid-dynamics(CFD) method is introduced to investigate the control mechanism, using two-dimensional Large-Eddy-Simulation to reproduce the VIV process. The Reynolds number of the cases involved in this paper ranges from $1{\times}10^5$ to $3{\times}10^5$, using the width of bridge deck as reference length. A field-filter technique and detailed analysis on wall pressure are used to give an intuitive demonstration of the changes brought by the horizontal flow-isolating plate. Results show that this aerodynamic appendage is equally effective in suppressing vertical and torsional VIV, indicating inspiring application prospect in similar PI shaped bridge decks.

On the basis of the Computational Fluid Dynamics technique (CFD) combined with the overlap grid method, this paper establishes a numerical simulation method to study the problem of ice-propeller interaction in viscous flow and carries out a simulation forecast of the hydrodynamic performance of an ice-class propeller and flow characteristics when in the proximity of milling-shape ice (i.e., an ice block with a groove cut by a high-speed revolving propeller). We use a trimmed mesh in the entire calculation domain and use the overlap grid method to transfer information between the domains of propeller rotation calculation and ice-surface computing. The grid is refined in the narrow gap between the ice and propeller to ensure the accuracy of the flow field. Comparison with the results of the experiment reveals that the error of the hydrodynamic performance is within 5%. This confirms the feasibility of the calculation method. In this paper, we calculate the exciting force of the propeller, analyze the time domain of the exciting force, and obtain the curve of the frequency domain using a Fourier transform of the time-domain curve of the exciting force. The existence of milling-shape ice before the propeller can greatly disturb the wake flow field. Unlike in open water, the propeller bearing capacity shows a downward trend in three stages, and fluctuating pressure is more disordered near the ice.
In coastal regions, it is common to witness significant damages on low-rise buildings caused by hurricanes and other extreme wind events. These damages start at high pressure zones or weak building components, and then cascade to other building parts. The state-of-the-art in experimental and numerical aerodynamic load evaluation is to assume buildings with intact envelopes where wind acts only on the external walls and correct for internal pressure through separate aerodynamic studies. This approach fails to explain the effect of openings on (i) the external pressure, (ii) internal partition walls; and (iii) the load sharing between internal and external walls. During extreme events, non-structural components (e.g., windows, doors or rooftiles) could fail allowing the wind flow to enter the building, which can subject the internal walls to lateral loads that potentially can exceed their load capacities. Internal walls are typically designed for lower capacities compared to external walls. In the present work, an anticipated damage development scenario is modelled for a four-story building with a stepped gable roof. LES is used to examine the change in the internal and external wind flows for different level of assumed damages (starting from an intact building up to a case with failure in most windows and doors are observed). This study demonstrates that damages in non-structural components can increase the wind risk on the structural elements due to changes in the loading patterns. It also highlights the load sharing mechanisms in low rise buildings.

Hanger in a rail-launched missile protrudes in general and causes to increase significant drag force. One method to avoid the significant increase of drag force is to apply fairings on the hanger. In this paper, sloping shaped fairing parameters of height, width, and length are optimized to minimize the drag force under subsonic speed region by examining three configurations of fairings : front-fairing only, rear-faring only, and the both front and rear fairing. We use Latin Hypercube Sampling method to determine the experimental points, and computational fluid dynamics with incompressible RANS solver was applied to acquire the data at sampling points. Then, we construct a meta model by kriging method. We find the best choice among three configurations examined : both front and rear fairing reduce the drag force by 63 % without the constraint of fairing mass, and front fairing reduced the drag force by 52 % with the constraint of hanger mass.
Solar power generation, which is one of the methods of using solar energy, has a high possibility of practical implementation compared to other renewable energy power generation, and it has the characteristic that it can generate as much power as needed in necessary places. In addition, maintenance is easy, unmanned operation is possible, and power management can be performed more efficiently if operated in a hybrid method with existing electric energy. Therefore, in this study, numerical analysis using a computer program was performed to analyze the efficient operation and performance improvement of solar energy of the rotating condensing type solar LED street lamp. As a result, the two-axis tracking type could obtain 15.23 % more electricity per year than the fixed type, and additional auxiliary power generation was required for the fixed type by 19 % per year than the tracking type. As a result of computational fluid dynamics(CFD) simulation for PV module surface temperature prediction, the The surface temperature of the Photovoltaics(PV) module incident surface was predicted to be about 10℃ higher than that of the fixed type.
To investigate the structural behaviour of grouped tanks under wind loads, 2 problems need to be figured out, wind pressures on tank shells and critical loads of the shell under these pressure distribution patterns. Following the wind tunnel tests described in the companion paper, this paper firstly seeks to obtain wind loads on the external wall in a squarely-arranged cylindrical tank group by numerical simulation, considering various layouts. The outcomes demonstrate that the numerical method can provide similar results on wind pressures and better insights on grouping effects through extracted streamlines. Then, geometrically nonlinear analyses are performed using several selected potentially unfavourable wind pressure distributions. It is found that the critical load is controlled by limit point buckling when the tank is empty while excessive deformations when the tank is full. In particular, significant reductions of wind resistance are found on grouped full tanks compared to the isolated tank, considering both serviceability and ultimate limit state, which should receive special attention if the tank is expected to resist severe wind loads with the increase of liquid level.

The hydrodynamic characteristics of amphibious assault vehicles are investigated using commercial CFD code, STAR-CCM+. Resistance performances of a displacement-type vehicle and a semi-planing type vehicle are analyzed in calm water. The self-propelled model is also computed for the semi-planing type vehicle. All computations are performed using an overset mesh system and a RANS based flow-solver coupled with a two-degree of freedom equations of motion. A moving reference frame is applied to simulate revolutions of impeller blades for a waterjet propulsion system. Grid dependency tests are performed to evaluate discretization errors for the mesh systems. The numerical analysis results are compared with the experimental results obtained from model tests. It is shown that RANS is capable of investigating the resistance and self-propulsion characteristics of high-speed amphibious assault vehicles. It is also found that a fully covered side skirt, which is covering tracks, reduces resistance and stern trim, besides increasing propulsive efficiency.

Plasma density in semiconductor fabrication equipment becomes higher to achieve the improved the throughput of the process, but the increase of surface corrosion of the ceramic coated chamber wall has been observed by the increased plasma density. Plasma chamber wall coating with aerosol deposition prefer to be firm and uniform to prevent the potential creation of particle inside the chamber from the deformation of the coating materials, and the aerosol discharge nozzle is a good control factor for the deposited coating condition. In this paper, we investigated the design of the nozzle of the aerosol deposition to form a high-quality coating film. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study was employed to minimize boundary layer effect and shock wave. The degree of expansion, and design of simulation approach was applied to found out the relationship between the divergence angle and nozzle length as the key parameter for the nozzle design. We found that the trade-off tendency between divergence angle and nozzle length through simulation and quantitative analysis, and present the direction of nozzle design that can improve the uniformity of chamber wall coating.

Deep-learning-based Super-Resolution (SR) methods were evaluated to reconstruct pressure fields with a high resolution from low-resolution images taken from a coarse grid simulation. In addition to a canonical SRCNN(super-resolution convolutional neural network) model, two modified models from SRCNN, adding an activation function (ReLU or Sigmoid function) to the output layer, were considered in the present study. High resolution images obtained by three models were more vivid and reliable qualitatively, compared with a conventional super-resolution method of bicubic interpolation. A quantitative comparison of statistical similarity showed that SRCNN model with Sigmoid function achieved best performance with less dependency on original resolution of input images.
