Purpose: This study was conducted in order to investigate the level of intimate partner violence (IPV), beliefs and attitudes toward IPV and depression in victims of IPV and to identify factors influencing their depression. Methods: This was a descriptive study using a questionnaire. The Woman Abuse Screening Tool was used for examination of IPV, and the tool developed by Saunders, Lynch, Grayson & Linz(1987) and Haj - Yahia (2003) was used for examination of beliefs and attitudes toward IPV. The CES -D Scale was used for evaluation of depression. Results: A total of 172 victims were recruited. The level of IPV was low ($1.36{\pm}0.30$ out of 3) and the level depression was mild depression ($11.57{\pm}11.30$, out of 60). Beliefs and attitudes toward IPV were not positive (2.51 out of 5). A significant relationship was observed between beliefs and attitudes toward IPV, level of IPV and depression. Factor influencing depression was physical abuse, and that was explained by 13.5% (F=3.600, p=.001). Conclusion: According to these results, depression was a significant symptom in victims of IPV, therefore, health care providers should recognize depression as a significant indicator of IPV and should evaluate women with depression regarding their experience with IPV.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the risk of malnutrition and its relationship with depression and perceived health status. Methods: A total number of 154 elderly over 60 years participated in the study through a community elderly center. The risk of malnutrition was measured by NSI (Nutritional Screening Initiative), depression by CES-D, and health status by a self-rated Likert scale. Results: About one fourth (22.7%) of the subjects had a high risk, and 31.2% had a moderate risk of getting malnutrition. Regarding depression, 34.4% (53 elderly) of the subjects had a high risk. Overall health status had a mean of 3.46 within the range of 1 to 5. In relation to demographic factors, female elderly (${\chi}^2=6.68$, p= .04), aged younger than 75 years old (${\chi}^2=8.60$, p= .01), and having co-morbidity (F=9.81, p= .001) were significantly related to a high risk of malnutrition. Having a higher depression score, higher number of co-morbidity, and lower perceived health status were significantly related to a higher risk of becoming malnourished. Conclusion: The elderly's risk of getting malnutrition was significantly related to their depression and perceived health status. With these findings nursing interventions focusing on these factors should be developed in order to improve the elderly's multidimensional well-being.
In this paper, we propose a world's first programmable video processing platform for video quality enhancement of 8K ($7680{\times}4320$) UHD (Ultra High Definition) TV at 60 frames per second. To support huge computation and memory bandwidth of video quality enhancement for 8K resolution, the proposed platform has unique features like symmetric multi-cluster architecture for data partitioning, ring data-path between clusters to support data pipelining, on-the-fly processing architecture to reduce DDR bandwidth, flexible hardware to accelerating common kernel in video enhancement algorithms. In addition to those features, general programmability of SRP (Samsung reconfigurable processor) as main core of the proposed platform makes it possible to upgrade continuously video enhancement algorithm even after the platform is fixed. This ability is very important because algorithms for 8K DTV is under development. The proposed sub-system has been embedded into SoC (System on Chip) and new 8K UHD TV using the programmable SoC is expected at CES2015 for the first time in the world.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of PTSD on memory function and hippocampal volume, and to identify major variables correlated to hippocampal volume and memory function. Thirty four Vietnam veterans were collected for this study, among whom eighteen were PTSD patients and sixteen were combat control subjects. The author used Impact of Event Scale(IES), Combat Exposure Scale(CES), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale(HDRS) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Korea Memory Assessment Scale(K-MAS) was assessed for memory function. Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) was used to measure hippocampal volume. There were significant differences between PTSD and Non-PTSD veterans in IES, HDRS and BDI. Significant difference was found in verbal memory and total memory of K-MAS between PTSD and Non-PTSD veterans. There was significant difference in hippocampal volume between PTSD and Non-PTSD veterans. Short term memory, verbal memory and total memory were positively correlated to hippocampal volume. Hippocampal volume was negatively correlated to IES, HDRS, and BDI. These results suggest that PTSD severity be associated with hippocampal atrophy and memory dysfunction. Reduced or smaller hippocampal volume may be preexisting risk factor for stress exposure or the development of PTSD on combat exposure.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between depression, alexithymia, social support and somatic symptom in adolescents. Methods: The subjects were 1,519 adolescents in Seoul. Radloff's CES-D (The Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression scale) for depression, Bagby, Parker and Taylor's TAS (Toronto Alexithymia Scale) for alexithymia, Park's social support and Derogatis's SCL-90 (Brief Symptom Inventory & Matching Clinical Rating Scale) were used. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients, t or F test, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: Depression and somatic symptom were lower but social support was higher when compared to mean score. The somatic symptom was significantly positive correlations to age, depression, alexithymia but no correlation to social support. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that 21.8% of the somatic symptom was significantly accounted for depression, alexithymia, social support, gender, economic status, living alone, and living with parent. Conclusion: These results suggest that depression, alexithymia, living alone can be potential risk factors for somatic symptom in the adolescents. Therefore, these findings will give useful information for developing a promotion program focused on social support in the adolescents.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate nutritional intake, body mass index (BMI) and depression, and to elucidate depression in relation to nutritional intake and BMI among Chinese college students studying in South Korea. Methods: A descriptive study design was adopted. Data were collected from 170 Chinese college students in South Korea June-August, 2019. In this study, 24-hour dietary records were obtained and BMI was measured. Nutrient intakes were calculated from the dietary records using the CAN-PRO software. Depression was assessed using the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Results: Of 170 participants, 19 (11.2%) were underweight and 42 (24.7%) were overweight. Female, single, and non-smoking participants were underweight. There were 97 (57.1%) participants experiencing depression, and 99 (58.2%) consuming lower protein than the recommended nutrient intake resulting in insufficient nutrients. The intake of vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, pantothenic acid, calcium, iron, and selenium was much lower than the standard. Depressive participants were significantly greater among the underweight participants and those consuming insufficient nutrients in terms of protein, pantothenic acid, and selenium. Conclusion: An intervention program is required to improve nutritional status, which should be a part of the strategies to manage depression for Chinese college students in South Korea.
Purpose: This study was conducted to develop and assess the feasibility of an upper extremity exercise program based on Patterned Sensory Enhancement (PSE) for home-bound stroke patients by measuring the level of upper extremity function, depression, and interpersonal relationship. Methods: The experiments were performed on stroke patients at three different rehabilitation centers in Incheon City. Twenty patients participated in the experimental group or in the control group. The program was executed three times a week for 6 weeks. Data were collected from August to October, 2006. Manual Function Test was used to quantify and evaluate upper extremity function. The depression level and the effectiveness of interpersonal relationship were quantified and measured using CES-D and Relationship Change Scale, respectively. Results: The effectiveness of upper extremity function of stroke patients who participated in the PSE upper extremity exercise program was higher than that of non-participating patients. The depression level decreased and interpersonal relationship improved in the stroke patients who participated in this program compared to those who did not. Conclusion: These findings prove that the PSE upper extremity exercise program for home-bound stroke patients was an effective strategy for enhancing upper extremity function, decreasing the depression level, and improving interpersonal relationships.
Objectives: This study intends to understand the difference of social support levels and the relationship between social support the health status, college adjustment and academic achievement in the college student. Methods: Data were obtained from self-administered questionnaire of 416 college student. We measured the demographic characteristics, social support (tangible support, appraisal support, belonging support, self-esteem support), health status (36-item short-form health survey(SF-36), center for epidemiologic studies-depression(CES-D), perceived stress scale(PSS)), student adaptation to college questionnaire(SACQ), average grades point. Chi-square test, t-test, ANOVA test, pearson correlation analysis were used for analysis factors relation of the social support of the college students. Results: In considering the degree of social support by the demographic characteristics in the college students, the social support was better for the female college students. In considering the relation between social support and health status, the students who get better social support, were good in health depression and perceived stress status. When they got better social support their college adjustment and academic achievement were good. The result was statistically significant. Conclusions: Social support for students has great influence on health, college adjustment and academic achievement of students. Psychological aspects of students should be included in the strategy of social support for students.
