  • Inter-cell coordination has been an emerging issue for mitigating inter-cell interference in broadband wireless access networks such as IEEE802.16 and 3GPP LTE (Long Term Evolution). This paper proposes uplink/downlink hybrid inter-cell coordination patterns for a TDD (Time Division Duplex)/MC-CDMA (Multi-Carrier Code Division Multiple Access) system. For the performance analysis, closed forms of inter-cell interferences are derived when uplink and downlink transmissions coexist over a multi-cell environment. In the analysis, we find an optimal ratio of downlink transmit powers of BSs (Base Stations) based on the target outage probability and the performance according to ratios of uplink/downlink transmit powers of MSs (Mobile Stations)/BSs is explored. Our numerical results show that interference mitigation utilizing the characteristics of the uplink and downlink power ratio is very effective in improving system performance in terms of QoS.

  • In this paper, we propose a downlink beamforming method which is considered common pilot channel for coherent detection and dedicated traffic channel for desired user in FDD/CDMA systems. The existing downlink beamforming system produces phase mismatch between traffic and pilot signals at desired mobile as well as interference to other mobiles. A new downlink beamforming method can solve above problem based on least squares method between reference function and beamforming function. A numerical analysis shows that the proposed downlink beamforming method matches well and gives low BER performance.

  • In this paper, we propose a downlink power control scheme to apply in the unequal error protection multi-code CDMA mobile medicine system. The mobile medicine system contains (i) blood pressure and body temperature measurement value, (ii) ECG medical signals measured by the electrocardiogram device, (iii) mobile patient's history, (iv) G.729 audio signal, MPEG-4 CCD sensor video signal, and JPEG2000 medical image. By the help of the multi-code CDMA spread spectrum communication system with downlink power control scheme and unequal error protection strategy, it is possible to transmit mobile medicine media and meet the quality of service. Numerical analysis and simulation results show that the system is a well transmission platform in mobile medicine.

  • This letter presents an approximation of the outage probability of the pilot channel that can be used for CDMA cell planning. The approximation can determine system parameters for soft handover in IS-95-based cellular CDMA downlink design. Computer simulations show that our analytical results agree with empirical results.

  • In this paper, downlink capacity of time duplex division (TDD) based cellular wireless networks utilizing fixed hopping stations is investigated. In the network, a number of fixed subscriber stations act as hopping transmission stations between base stations and far away subscribers, forming a cellular and ad hoc mobile network model. At the radio layer, TDD code division multiple access (CDMA) is selected as the radio interface due to high efficiency of frequency usage. In order to improve the system performance in terms of downlink capacity, we propose different time slot allocation schemes with the usage of fixed hopping stations, which can be selected by either random or distanced dependent schemes. Performance results obtained by computer simulation demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed network to improve downlink system capacity.

  • We propose multistage parallel nulling (MPN) partial parallel interference cancellation (PPIC) receiver for downlink multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multicarrier (MC)-code division multiple access (CDMA) systems. Though the V-BLAST is a popular MIMO receiver, it shows error floor for multiuser downlink MIMO MC-CDMA systems. The proposed MPN-PPIC receiver does not produce error floor for multiuser case, and achieves substantial performance gains with multistage processing. For single user case, the proposed method also surpasses the V-BLAST receiver with multistage processing for MIMO MC-CDMA systems with chip level interleaving. The system performance of the proposed MPN-PPIC receiver is evaluated through computer simulations.

  • We investigate rate scheduling and power allocation problem for a delay constrained CDMA systems. Specifically, we determine an energy efficient scheduling policy, while each user maintains the short term (n time slots) average throughput. More importantly, it is shown that the optimal transmission strategy for the uplink is same as that of the downlink, called uplink and downlink duality. We then examine the performance of the optimum transmission strategy for the uplink and the downlink for various system environments.

The simulation results show that the proposed scheme support a throughput of several tens of Mbit/s and a spectral efficiency range of 1 bit/s/Hz to 4.7 bit/s/Hz according to channel environments due to the adaptive broadband satellite transmission.

  • In this paper, the effects of transmit beamforming on downlink performance in DS-CDMA communication systems are investigated. The uplink and downlink in FDD systems use different carrier frequencies. If the downlink uses the same weighting vectors as the uplink, the antenna beam for downlink is formed with certain DOA shift and it thus affects the beamforming gain. So, the impacts of different frequencies on the downlink beam patterns are studied. One possible algorithm to convert uplink beamforming weights to downlink, which is called frequency-calibrated processing, is also evaluated to reduce the degradation of downlink performance due to different frequencies. Under frequency selective channels, the downlink chooses a PUPW beamforming scheme when the uplink employs a PPPW vectors. To form a beam pattern for a PUPW after combining the downlink PPPWs converted from the uplink PPPWs, three approaches are studied. One method is to consider only one dominant path and thus obtain a single main-beam. In the others, multiple-beams weighted with the magnitudes of all paths and equally weighted with all paths are constructed.

  • In this paper, the Eigen-RAKE receiver in wideband direct sequence code-division multiple access(DS-CDMA) systems with downlink smart antenna is analyzed for different spreading bandwidths(1.25 MHz, 5 MHz, 10 MHz) and different channel environments(macro, micro). The realistic spatio-temporal wideband multipath channel is assumed, one of which is standardized multiple-input single-output(MISO) radio channel model for WCDMA link-level simulations proposed by $3^{rd}$ generation partnership project(3GPP) contributions. We assumed spatial scattering phenomenon in which many unresolvable path signals within a limited range of spatial angle simultaneously contribute to the signals received at the receiver. Several multipaths within one chip are distinguished into each one and the first multipath components are selected as the desired signal and the others are considered self-interference. Downlink DS-CDMA system with eigenbeamformer using wider bandwidth present better performance than that using narrow bandwidth system by employing Eigen-RAKE receiver of many number of branches. It is shown that the downlink eigenbeamformer is more effective in typical urban macro cellular environments when using Eigen-RAKE receiver.
