Characteristics of Heavy Metal Distribution in Bottom Sdeiments of Tributaries of the Han River (한강유역 주요지천의 저질내 중금속 분포)

  • The Hg, Cd, Cu, Mn, and Zn in bottom sediments of han river and their tributaries were analyzed to evaluate the seasonal variations of heavy metals. Leaching tests were also performed for estimation of availability of heavy metal retention in sediments. Sediments of Anyang stream showed the highest concentration of heavy metal in the sediment samples. Heavy metal concentration was heavily depended upon the heavy metal source of tributaries of han river and particle distribution. Clay and silt had higher concentration of heavy metals than very fine san and fine sand due to difference of retention capability of heavy metal. The highest concentration of heavy metal was observed in bottom sediments irrespective of sites investigated. Heavy metals and ignition loss showed positive relations, and higher relationships with p-value <0.01 were observed between copper and lead. copper and zinc, and depended on the pH condition of leaching test, and leachated fraction increased with decrease of the pH.

Geochemical Characteristics of Mine Wastes in Abandoned Mines in Korea (휴/폐광 광산폐기물의 지구화학적 특성)

  • The objective of this study is to investigate geochemical characteristics of mine wastes including tailings in various abandoned mines in Korea. Tailings and wastes were sampled in and around 39 metalliferous mines, and analysed heavy metal concentrations including Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn extracted by 0.1N HCl and aqua regia by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. Measurements of paste pH and lime requirement were carried out to examine a general geochemical characteristics of the materials. Lots of mine wastes were characterized by very low pH values of 2 to 4 and high lime requirement to control neutralization of the wastes. In addition, elevated levels of heavy metals were found in various mine wastes extracted by both 0.lN HCl and aqua regia. Because the mine wastes can be dispersed into the downstream by clastic movement and wind-blow, it is necessary to control the materials with a proper method for their reclamation.

  • 고체연료 성상별 연소시 굴뚝에서 배출되는 입자상물질의 농도는 섬유류(86.8mg/m$^3$) > PP 마대류(26.51mg/m$^3$) > 합성수지류(16.71mg/m$^3$) > 우레탄(11.17mg/m$^3$) > 목재류(10.92mg/m$^3$) > 종이류(2.61mg/m$^3$)의 순으로 나타났다. 특히 폐섬유 소각시 입자상물질 중 중금속 함유농도는 Pb의 경우 기타 고체연료 연소시 함유농도비가 0.4% 이하인 반면에 폐섬유 소각시 6.6%인 5.72mg/m$^3$로 높게 나타났으며, Cd 또한 1.4%인 1.24mg/m$^3$로 높게 나타났다.

  • Fluid flow in a rectangular duct system are measured by W laser doppler velocity meter, and also computed by commercial software of STAR-CD for comparison between then First, for a rectangular duct with 90 degree metered elbow, the fluid flow with Reynolds numbs's of 1,508 is predicted by assumption of both laminar and turbulent models. But, even though the Reynolds number is less than 2,300-3,000, the computation by turbulent model is close to the experimental data. Moeover, the computation by turbulent model for Reynolds number of 11,751 also predicts the experimental data satisfactorily. Second, for a rectangular duct with two branch ducts, the ratios between flow rates in the two branches are invariant to Reynolds number according to both of numerical and experimental results.

  • Study on the unimolecular reaction for $CH_2FO$ and $CD_2FO$ is carried out. The structures, energy barriers and zero point energy of the three channels in the title unimolecular reactions are computed with the MP2/6-311++G(3df, 3pd) method. RRKM theory is used to calculate the rate constants of canonical case at temperature range of 500-5000 K and microcanonical system at total energy of 19.05-71.68 kcal/mol. The results indicate that the anharmonic effect and isotope effect are very small for the three channels, and the anharmonic rate constants, around $10^9-10^{11}s^{-1}$, are close to the experimental prediction reasonably.

Highly Efficient Simple-Structure Red Phosphorescent OLEDs with an Extremely Low Doping Technology

  • Highly efficient red phosphorescent OLEDs (PHOLEDs) with a simple, organic, triple-layer structure was developed using the narrow-bandgap fluorescent host material bis(10-hydroxybenzo[h] quinolinato)beryllium complex (Bebq2) and the deep-red dopant tris(1-phenylisoquinoline)iridium (Ir(piq)3). The maximum current and power efficiency values of 12.71 cd/A and 16.02 lm/W, respectively, with an extremely low doping technology of 1%, are demonstrated herein. The results reveal a practical, cost-saving host dopant system for the fabrication of highly efficient PHOLEDs involving the simple structure presented herein, with a reduction of expensive Ir dopants.

  • In view of the results to have measured metallic elements which is included in 40 sorts of herb medicines and surveyed their distribution, ninekinds of metals including Co, Ce, Ga, 71, Cd, As, Sbr Bu. Pb, are never orlittle included in almost herb medicines. Other twenty four sorts of ele-ments (Mo, Sc, Be, V, Ni, Su, Se, Ba, Cr, Su, Ti, B, Li, Mg, Ca, Sr, Mnl Fe,Cu, Zn. p, Al, Na, K) are metals that are included in large quentities incomparison with others. Selagirellae Radix contains is kinds of metallicelements more then other herb medicines does. The content of elements ofinorganic metal differs greatly according to the part of herb medicines .

Contents of Heavy Metals in Marine Invertebrates from the Korean Coast (한국 연안산 해산 무척추동물의 중금속 함량)

  • To measure the heavy metal contents of marine invertebrates, we collected 239 individuals representing 52 species from the eastern (Pohang), western (Gunsan), and southern (Tongyeong) coasts of Korea: 34 species of molluscan shellfish (Gastropoda and Bivalvia), 6 species of Cephalopoda, 8 species of Crustacea, and 4 other species. The mean levels of the heavy metals in the samples taken from the edible portion of each Gastropoda were high in the order of Zn ($21.471\;{\mu}g/g$), Cu ($4.115\;{\mu}g/g$), Mn ($0.868\;{\mu}g/g$), Ni ($0.254\;{\mu}g/g$), Pb ($0.238\;{\mu}g/g$), Cd ($0.154\;{\mu}g/g$), and Cr ($0.110\;{\mu}g/g$). The heavy metals in the Bivalvia were high in the order of Zn ($35.655\;{\mu}g/g$), Mn ($5.500\;{\mu}g/g$), Cu ($3.129\;{\mu}g/g$), Cd ($0.423\;{\mu}g/g$), Ni ($0.402\;{\mu}g/g$), Cr ($0.233\;{\mu}g/g$), and Pb ($0.232\;{\mu}g/g$). The heavy metals in the Cephalopoda were high in the order of Zn ($18.380\;{\mu}g/g$), Cu ($3.594\;{\mu}g/g$), Mn ($0.630\;{\mu}g/g$), Cr ($0.150\;{\mu}g/g$), Pb ($0.068\;{\mu}g/g$), Cd ($0.034\;{\mu}g/g$), and Ni ($0.030\;{\mu}g/g$). The heavy metals in the Crustacea were high in the order of Zn ($25.333\;{\mu}g$/g), Cu ($9.042\;{\mu}g/g$), Mn ($0.659\;{\mu}g/g$), Cr ($0.592\;{\mu}g/g$), Cd ($0.207\;{\mu}g/g$), Pb ($0.126\;{\mu}g/g$), and Ni ($0.094\;{\mu}g/g$). Therefore, the mean levels of the harmful heavy metals (Cd and Pb) in marine invertebrates were high in the order of Bivalvia>Crustacea=Gastropoda>Cephalopoda. The average daily intakes of the heavy metals from the fisheries products were as follows: Cd ($6.88\;{\mu}g$), Cr ($19.13\;{\mu}g$), Cu ($137.02\;{\mu}g$), Mn ($156.13\;{\mu}g$), Ni ($11.39\;{\mu}g$), Pb ($7.01\;{\mu}g$) and Zn ($1,025.94\;{\mu}g$). The average weekly intakes of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn from the fisheries products were 11.47%, 0.46%, 3.27% and 1.71% respectively, as compared with PTWI (Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intakes) established by FAO/WHO Expert Committee for Food Safety Evaluation.

Adsorption of Heavy Metal Ions onto Chemically Oxidized Ceiba pentandra (L.) Gaertn. (Kapok) Fibers

  • The physico-chemical properties of kapok fibers were altered via the combination processes of chlorite-periodate oxidation, in order to assess their efficacy as a heavy metal adsorbent. The chemically-oxidized kapok fibers were found to harbor a certain amount of polysaccharides, together with lowered lignin content. This alteration in lignin characteristics was clearly confirmed via FTIR and NBO yield. Moreover, chemically oxidized kapok fibers retained their hollow tube shape, although some changes were noted. The chemically oxidized kapok fibers evidenced elevated ability to adsorb heavy metal ions with the best fit for the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. Three cycles of adsorption-desorption were conducted with in-between regeneration steps. Our experimental results indicated that chemically oxidized kapok fibers possessed excellent adsorption characteristics, and the modified kapok fibers could be completely regenerated with almost equimolar diluted sodium hydroxide. Pb, Cu, Cd and Zn ions evidenced adsorption rates of 93.55%, 91.83%, 89.75%, and 92.85% on the chemically oxidized kapok fibers. The regeneration efficiency showed 73.58% of Pb, 71.55% of Cu, 66.87% of Cd, and 75.00% of Zn for 3rd cycle with 0.0125N NaOH.
