Adsorption and Separation Behaviors of Metal Ions Using a Poly-Dibenzo-18-Crown-6 in Aqueous Solution (수용액에서 Poly-dibenzo-18-crown-6를 이용한 금속이온들의 흡착 및 분리 특성)

  • The adsorption and separation behaviors of alkali, alkaline earth and transition metal ions using a poly-dibenzo-18-crown-6 were investigated in aqueous solution. The adsorption degree(E) and distribution ratio(D) of alkali, alkaline earth metal ions were Li(I)$t_R$) of metal ions were affected by the adsorption degree(E) and distribution ratio(D). This results showed good separation efficiency of K(I), Sr(II), Ag(I) and Pb(II) from the mixed metal solution.

Increased Lymphocyte Infiltration in Rheumatoid Arthritis Is Correlated with an Increase in LTi-like Cells in Synovial Fluid

  • In this study, we compared the immune cell populations in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) synovial fluid, which shows lymphoid tissue-like structure, with those in tonsils, which are normal secondary lymphoid tissues. Firstly, we found that $CD4^-CD11b^+$ macrophages were the major population in RA synovial fluid and that B cells were the major population in tonsils. In addition, synovial fluid from patients with osteoarthritis, which is a degenerative joint disease, contained $CD4^+CD11b^+$monocytes as the major immune cell population. Secondly, we categorized three groups based on the proportion of macrophages found in RA synovial fluid: (1) the macrophage-high group, which contained more than 80% macrophages; (2) the macrophage-intermediate group, which contained between 40% and 80% macrophages; and (3) the macrophage-low group, which contained less than 40% macrophages. In the macrophage-low group, more lymphoid tissue inducer (LTi)-like cells were detected, and the expression of OX40L and TRANCE in these cells was higher than that in the other groups. In addition, in this group, the suppressive function of regulatory T cells was downregulated. Finally, CXCL13 expression was higher in RA synovial fluid than in tonsils, but CCL21 expression was comparable in synovial fluid from all groups and in tonsils. These data demonstrate that increased lymphocyte infiltration in RA synovial fluid is correlated with an increase in LTi-like cells and the elevation of the chemokine expression.

Optimal Feeding Rates of Subadult Korean Rockfish Sebastes schlegeli Fed a Commercial Diet at Different Water Temperatures (저수온, 적수온, 고수온에서 미성어기 조피볼락(Sebastes schlegeli)의 배합사료 적정 공급률)

  • Three feeding trials were conducted to investigate the optimal feeding rates of subadult Korean rockfish Sebastes schlegeli at low, optimal and high water temperatures. In Exp-I, triplicate groups of fish (248 g) were fed a commercial diet (CD) with five different feeding rates of 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6% and 0.8% body weight per day for 10 weeks at the low temperature ($11.6-15.2^{\circ}C$). In Exp-II, fish (129 g) were fed the same CD with five different feeding rates of 0.4%, 0.8%, 1.2%, 1.6% and 2.0% body weight per day for 10 weeks at the optimal temperature ($16.0-18.8^{\circ}C$). In Exp-III, fish (85.7 g) were fed the same CD with five different feeding rates of 0.4%, 0.8%, 1.2%, 1.6% and 2.0% body weight per day for 12 weeks at the high temperature ($21.0-28.5^{\circ}C$). The optimal feeding rates in the low, optimal, and high water temperatures were estimated to be 0.56%, 0.93% and 1.17% body weight per day, respectively, for subadult Korean rockfish.

  • In this paper, a new variable wavelet packet decomposition audio coder, based on the time varying characteristic of the audio signals, is proposed and presents a technique to incorporate psychoacoustic models into an adaptive wave let packet scheme. The proposed filterbank improves the defect of the polyphase filterbank that could not properly represent the critical band and the defect of QMF-tree filter that need high complexity to implement. The filterbank consists of varying number of subband from 4 to 26 bands and use Daubechies 6-order wave let. The codec yields excellent quality at total bit rates of about 128kbps for monophonic CD-quality signals with an sampling frequency of 44.1kHz and reduces complexity by 19% for various bit-rates and sources with encoding and decoding process.

탄소 나노튜브의 성장 및 전계 방출 전자 특성

  • $C_{2}H_{2}/NH_{3}/H_{2}$ 의 혼합기체를 Ni 및 Co 촉매 금속에 열분해하여 탄소 나노튜브를 성장하여 구조적 특성을 SEM, TEM 및 Ramann으로 분석을 하였는 바, 성장된 탄소 나노튜브의 직경은 40~100nm 이었으며 모양은 구불구불하며 무질서하게 배열되었다. 탄소 나노튜브로부터의 전계 방출 특성은 통상적인 전계 방출기구에 기인됨을 알 수 있었다. 또한 인가 전압의 증가에 따라 탄소 나노튜브로 부터의 방출된 전류밀도와 휘도는 증가하였으며, $2.5 V/\mu\textrm{m}$의 전계에서는 $3.6 mA/\textrm{cm}^2$의 전류밀도 값을 갖고 있었으며, $0.8\textrm{cm}^2$의 면적에 성장된 탄소 나노튜브로부터 $56 cd/\textrm{m}^2$의 발광 강도를 보였다.

Overexpression of KAI1 Protein in Diabetic Skin Tissues

  • Background Patients with diabetes mellitus often have a difficult life, suffering from foot ulceration or amputation. Diabetes is characterized by chronic inflammation, and one of the features of inflammation is hypoxia. Recently, it has been reported that KAI1 is a hypoxia target gene. There is no published research on hypoxia-related KAI1 protein levels in human diabetic skin. Therefore, we have investigated the expression of KAI1 protein in diabetic skin tissue in vivo. Methods The expression of KAI1 protein was evaluated by western blotting in 6 diabetic skin tissue samples and 6 normal skin samples. Immunohistochemical staining was carried out to identify KAI1 expression. Results The western blotting revealed significantly increased expression of the KAI1 protein in diabetic skin tissues as compared to normal skin tissues. Immunohistochemical examination demonstrated that KAI1 was expressed in all diabetic skin tissues with moderate-to-strong positivity and weakly expressed in normal skin tissues. Conclusions Our data suggest that a high expression of the KAI1 protein can be observed in diabetic skin tissue. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report suggesting that KAI1 protein expression in diabetic skin tissues may be associated with chronic inflammatory states and hypoxia.

적합화된 자장의 세기 및 배열을 통한 대면적 유도결합형 플라즈마 개발에 관한 연구

  • 현재 반도체 공정에서 사용하는 건식식각 공정은 고밀도 프라즈마를 사용한 플라즈마 장비를 사용하는 경향이 증대되고 있으며 이와 같은 고밀도 플라즈마 장비의 사용은 반도체 소자의 최소 선폭(CD)이 deep sub-micron으로 감소하고 반면 실리콘 웨이퍼의 크기는 8인치 직경이상으로 증가하여 가고 있어서 그 필요성이 더욱 더 증가되고 있다. 특히 TFT-LCD를 비롯한 PDP, 그리고 FED 등과 같은 여러 가지 형태의 평판 디스플레이의 제조공정에 있어서도 실리콘 기판에 비하여 대면적의 기판을 이용하고 또한 사각형 형태의 시편공정이 요구되므로 평판 디스플레이에서도 고밀도의 균일한 플라즈마 유지가 중요하다. 따라서, 본 실험에서는 여러 가지 형태의 영구자석 및 전자석의 세기 및 배열이 유도결합형 플라즈마에 미치는 효과(plasma&etch uniformity, etch rate, etc.)를 살펴보기 위해서, 유도결합형 플라즈마 chamber(210mm$\times$210mm) 내부에 magnetic cusping을 위한 영구자석용 하우스를 제작하여 표면에서 3000Gauss의 자장세기를 갖는 소형영구자석을 부착하였으며,외벽에는 chamber와 같이 사각형태로 40회 감겨진 50cm$\times$50cm 의 크기로 chamber 상하에 1개씩 Helmholtz 코일 형태로 설치하였다. 식각가스로는 Cl2, HBr, 그리고 BCl3 gas를 이용하여 axial magnet과 multidipole magnet 유무에 따른 반응성 gas의 polysilicon 식각특성을 살펴보았으며, 또한 electrostatic probe(ESP, Hiden Analytic미)를 이용하여 이들 반응성 gas에 대한 magnetically enhanced inductively coupled plasma의 특성분석을 수행하였따. Cl2, HBr, BCl3의 반응성 식각가스 조합을 이용하여 polysilicon의 식각속도 및 식각선택도를 관찰한 결과, 어떠한 자장도 가하지 않은 경우에 비해 gas의 분해율이 가장 높은 영구자석과 전자석의 조합에서 가장 높은 식각도가 관찰되었다. 특히 pure Cl2 플라즈마의 경우, Axial 방향의 전자석만을 가한 경우 식각속도에 있어서는 큰 증가를 보였으나, 식각균일도(식각균일도:8.8%)는 다소 감소하였으며, Axial 방향의 전자석과 영구자석을 조합한 경우 가장 높은 식각속도를 얻었으며, 식각균일도는 Axial 방향의 전자석만을 사용하였을 경우와 비교하여 향상되었다.

Effect of Cadmium Treatment on the Total Thiol Groups, Glutathione and Phytochelatin Contents in Oenanthe javanica (카드늄을 처리한 미나리 (Oenanthe javanica)에서 전체 Thiol 잔기, 글루타치온, Phytochelatin의 농도 변화)

  • In order to evaluate the usefulness of O. javanica for the phytoremediation, it was grown for 1, 3, 7, 14, 21 days and was exposed to $50\;{\mu}M\;of\;CdCl_2$ in hydroponic medium after 3 weeks. Its biomass and contents of chlorophylls were analyzed. The growth of O. javanica showed little difference between cadmium treated and non-treated groups, while its contents of chlorophylls of Cd-treated group decreased up to 50% compared to the case of non-treated group. Its accumulated cadmium concentrations were 2.1, 7.3 and $113\;{\mu}moles\;Cd/g$ dry weight in the leaf, stem and root, respectively. The total contents of thiol increased 0.5, 1 and 7 times in the leaf, stem and root, respectively, while the contents of glutathione tended to decrease by 43%, 70% and 47% in the leaf, stem and root, respectively. Using HPLC analysis, the reasonable peaks of thiol compounds in shoot and root of Cd-treated sample were compared to those of non-treated sample in O. javanica, and found to be phytochelatins. In case of Nicotiana tabacum cv. Xanthi tested as control plant, the cadmium treatment for 3 weeks resulted in the decrease of both biomass and chlorophyll up to 70% and 75%, respectively. The roots of tobacco became rotten and eventually died. These results suggested that Oenanthe javanica is cadmium-tolerant hyperaccumulator.(Received December 20, 1996; accepted March 17, 1997)

Suppression of DNMTs Accelerates the In Vitro Erythropoietic Differentiation of Human $CD34^+$ Progenitor Cells

  • Epigenetic modification dependent DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs) play an important role in tissue- and stage-specific gene regulation and normal mammalian development. In this study, we show that DNMTs are expressed at different levels during hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) differentiation to proerythrocytes. DNMT1, DNMT3A, and DNMT3B were highly expressed at day 7 after differentiation. We used specific siRNA as a tool to probe the relationship between the expression of DNMTs and erythropoietic differentiation. When introduced siRNA of DMNT1 and DMNT3b in human $CD34^+$ cells, these more differentiated into erythrocytes. This was confirmed by glycophorin A (GPA) positive cell analysis and globin gene expression. $GPA^+$ cells increased up to $20{\sim}30%$, and ${\gamma}$- and ${\epsilon}$-globin genes increased in siRNA transfected cells. Therefore, our data suggest that suppression of DNA methylation can affect positively differentiation of HSC and may contribute to expression of erythrocyte lineage genes including GPA and globins.

Quality Improvement through Monitoring of Imported Medicinal Herbs (수입한약재 품목 분석을 통한 품질 제고)

  • Objectives : Quality control for imported medicinal herbs is duty for regulation, however to the best of our knowledge there has been no report regarding quality control of imported ones. Therefore, this study investigated the data of imported ones for monitoring quality issue. Methods : These data are categorized according to item, the amount of import, country, inspection item, suitability, and incongruity reason based on the 248 results performed by KIOM. Results : China is the number one country for import with the value of 73%. Inspected medicinal herbs were 139 species, among them Poria is ranked as top for requested number and the amount of import. The amount of import is similar between high ranking 20 species and low ranking 119 ones, showing high ranking ones are major. The incongruity ratio was 7.7% from the total number of inspected items, the reason for incongruity was excess of tolerable amount of Cd residue. Conclusions : From the data, it is effective way to focus on high ranking herbs for evaluating imported herbs for quality control. The study of mechanism on Cd accumulation and its decrease is essential for environmental matter. And identification and storage for mixed used and easily decomposable herbs are remained for further study. Our study might be small step for showing guideline for proper quality control.
