  • A low-cost, simple strip reader system using a linear movement mechanism of CD-ROM deck has been developed to characterize a lateral flow membrane-based immunochromatographic assay. The test strip reader was assembled by a CD-ROM deck and home-made optical head especially designed for immunoassays. The optical head for detecting reflected light from the test strip surface consists of green light-emitting diode, large area silicon photodiode, and anodized aluminum mounting block providing a slit structure for cutting light from the LED. The stepping motor of the deck was operated in the full step mode, whose distance of each reading point is about 0.15mm. The performance of the strip reader was tested by analysis of HBV(hepatitis B virus) antigen test kit. This strip reader can be useful for inexpensive, disposable, and membrane-based assays that provide visual evidence of the presence of an analyte in a liquid sample.

  • In this paper, the result of a performance study on a home-built spinning disk type confocal microscope is presented. The confocal microscope was fabricated with a Nipkow disk made of the made of the microfilm. The throughput of the disk was 0.5%, allowing the observation of specimen with higher reflectivities only. A laser diode at 692.7nm was used as the light source. The topographic structures of a PC ROM and the CD ROM were observed with sufficient reliability, while the effect of the convolution of the beam size with the finite object size was found dominant. Also the shadowing effect by the etched pattern was observed.

  • The development of information retrieval between 1950s and 1990s is described chronologically. For each decade, the following information retrieval systems are examined : post-coordinate and KWIC indexing methods for the 1950s ; off-line and experimental on-line systems for the 1960s ; on-line and full-text retrieval systems for the 1970s ; full-text databases, on-line interfaces, and overseas and domestic on-line databases for the 1980s ; and finally for the 1990s, CD-ROM, multimedia, hypertext, and Internet. The prospects for the future are also discussed.

  • BLDC motors are stored in the devices such as CD-RW, COMBO, DVD-ROM and CD-ROM. It is indispensable to establish reliability assessment criteria for BLDC motors, especially in the world where IT grows rapidly. In this article, reliability certification procedure is given. The reliability certification procedure consists of two separate tests such as quality certification test and lifetime test. The former quality certification test comprises general performance test and environmental test. Items which pass the test undergo lifetime test which guarantees the extent of mean lifetime with certain confidence.

  • This paper intends to describe the concepts and historical development of electronic library, to examine some of information technologies such as CD-ROM, electronic books, multimedia and networks, and to analyze cases of electronic library. Electronic library is able to offer many services in digital form, ranging from bibliographic databases on CD-ROM running on standalone computers, to fully networked abstracts and texts, available inside and outside the library. For users, the electronic library is a means of improving the speed of access to library materials, of providing a simple means of the selecting materials amid the glut of information available, and of eliminating the need to visit a library for many information inquires. In summary, electronic library has the potential to give scholars better service than conventional libraries, at a lower cost. However, remember that, today, almost all these benefits are still potential.

  • A number of dust particles are intruded into ODD(Optical disk drive) due to the flow caused by disk rotation and are adhered to a lens or disk surface. The space between the disk and the lens is being reduced. Someone indicates the problems of this drive that are relatively small data storing capacity and slow access time. In recent, the problems of this optical disk drive mentioned above are being solved by adding the speed of the disk's revolution, making the actuator high-speed or light, and making the beam spot size smaller than making the space narrow between disk and lens. These particle contamination affects seriously RF Signal, readout signal in an ODD. Especially, the affected parts by a particle contamination in an ODD's readout signal are objective lens and media.

  • Serials have always presented special problems since they are issued continuously and also they can change their title, frequency, publisher, etc. This paper discusses the current serials publication as well as the future trends of serials. Particular emphasis is placed on issues relating to the proliferation, scattering, increasing price, variations and furthermore CD- ROM which will have a direct impact on serials publishing.
