Competitive Adsorption Characteristics of Cupper and Cadmium Using Biochar Derived from Phragmites communis (갈대 biochar의 구리 및 카드뮴 경쟁흡착특성)

  • BACKGROUND: Heavy metal adsorptionnot only depends on biochar characteristics but also on the nature of the metals involved and on their competitive behavior for biochar adsorption sites. The goal of this study was to investigate the competitive absorption characteristics of Cu and Cd in mono-metal and binary-metal forms by biochar derived from Phragmites communis. METHODS AND RESULTS: Batch and column experiments were conducted to evaluate the competitive adsorption characteristics of the biocharfor Cu and Cd. In the batch experiments, the maximum adsorption capacity of Cd(63 mg/g) by biochar was higher than that for Cu (55 mg/g) in the mono-metal adsorption isotherm. On the other hand, the maximum Cu adsorption capacity (40 mg/g) by biochar was higher than that for Cd(25 mg/g) in the binary-metal adsorption isotherm. Cu was the most retained cations. Cd could be easily exchanged and substituted by Cu. The amounts of adsorbed metals in the column experiments were in the order of Cd (121 mg/g) > Cu (96 mg/g) in mono-metal conditions, and Cu (72 mg/g) > Cd (29 mg/g) in binary-metal conditions. CONCLUSION: Overall, the results demonstrated that competitive adsorption among metals increased the mobility of these metals. Particularly, Cd in binary-metal conditions lost its adsorption capacity most significantly.

Characteristics of MOVPE Grown HgCdTe on GaAs and CdZnTe Substrates (GaAs 및 CdZnTe기판위에 MOVPE 법으로 성장된 HgCdTe 박막의 특성)

  • HgCdTe films were grown on the (100). (111), (211) CdZnTe, and (100) GaAs substrates by metal organic chemical vapor epitaxy. We have investigated the surface morphology, electrical properties, crystalline qualities, and composition of HgCdTe with substrates orientation. Three dimensional facet growth was occurred on (111) CdZnTe substrate. The crystalline quality of HgCdTe on (100) CdZnTe was superior to that of HgCdTe on (100) GaAs. FWHM values of double crystal x-ray diffraction of HgCdTe on (100) CdZnTe and (100) GaAs were 55 and 125arcsec, respectively. HgCdTe on GaAs substrate showed n-type conductivity with high mobility, however, HgCdTe on CdZnTe showed p-type conductivity with carrier concentration of higher than 10/sup 16/㎤.

The Effects of Instruction Material Using ICT at Elementary School Science (초등학교 과학 수업에서 ICT 활용 수업자료의 효과)

  • This study investigated the effects of the application of a variety of ICT (Information communication Technology) cause the effects on self-directed learning characteristics, creativity and science achievement. In order to achieve the above aim, WBI (Web-Based Instructions), instructions using CD-ROM Titles and Instruction Module Using ICT for the unit were applied and analyzed which belongs to the area of 'the earth' in the subject 'science' for Elementary school students. Instructions using WBI materials, CD-ROM titles and Instruction Module Using ICT were found to be effective on 'science achievement', 'self-directed learning characteristics' and 'creativity'. They show meaningful effect on improving 'science achievement', 'self-directed learning characteristics' and 'creativity'. WBI proved more fruitful than instruction using CO-ROM titles, Instruction Module Using ICT on improving self-directed learning characteristics. Instruction Module Using ICT proved more fruitful than instruction using CD-ROM title, WBI on improving creativity.

  • In the remediation of contaminated soil by electrokinetic process, transport characteristics of contaminants are major factors. Pb is highly fixed to entire soil and not moved readily. High concentration of Cd was analyzed in the cathodic section but anodic section's concentration was lower than initial concentration. Although the Cd had high treatment effect, 50% of total mass was concentrated in cathodic section and was not flowed out readily. Most of transported Cd may be adsorbed in the cathodic side soil due to increased pH at adjacent to catholyte.

  • Electrochemical deposition characteristics of CdSe nanorods were investigated for hybrid solar cell applications. CdSe nanorods were fabricated by electrochemical method in $CdSO_4$ and $H_2SeO_3$ dissolved aqueous solution using an anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template. Uniformity of CdSe nanorods was dependent on the diameter and the height of holes in AAO. The current density, current mode, bath composition and temperature were controlled to obtain a 1:1 atomic composition of CdSe. CdSe nanorods deposited by direct-current method showed better uniformity compared to those deposited by purse-current and/or purse-reverse current methods due to the bottom-up filling characteristics. $H_2SeO_3$ concentration showed more significant effects on pH of solution and stoichiometry of deposits compared to that of $CdSO_4$. A 1:1 stoichiometry of uniform CdSe nanorods was obtained from 0.25M $CdSO_4-5$ mM $H_2SeO_3$ electrolytes with a direct current of 10 $mA/cm^2$ at room temperature. X-ray diffraction and electron diffraction pattern investigations demonstrate that CdSe nanorods are a uniform cubic CdSe crystal.

Acquisitions and Use of CD-ROMs at Public Libraries (공공도서관의 CD-ROM 수집과 이용)

  • The purpose of this research is to survey the current status of CD-ROM acquisitions and use at public libraries. For this purpose, the questionnaires prepared to examine the information environments, CD-ROM acquisitions and use as well as the future plans for CD-ROM use were sent to seven public libraries in Daegu. This paper consists of the introduction, the characteristics and trends of CD-ROM publications, the present status of CD-ROM publishing in Korea, and the analyses of acquisitions and use of CD-ROMs at public libraries. It is intended to find out if there is any relationship between CD-ROM publishing and CD-ROM use at public libraries. It concludes that the CD-ROM collections of public libraries are related to the publishing of CD-ROM, but the use of CD-ROMs cannot be claimed to reflect the publishing. Some interpretations and recommendations for the results are suggested.

  • The isoelelectric points of Cd-BP(l) and Cd-BP(II), cadmium-binding proteins, were 6.01 and 5.35, respectively. Both of them contained zinc. As for the amino acid composition, Cd-BP(I) contained a lot of glycine and lysine but none of such aromatic amino acids as tyrosine and phenylalanine.. On the other hand, Cd-BP(II) contained leucine, histidine, asparti cacid and alanine but no aromatic amino acids.

  • In this paper, the electrical characteristics of CdS thin films doped with a little of impurities(activators) are studied on wavelength(380-760nm), and temperature($120-360^{\circ}K$). These results are as follows. 1) The resistance of pure CdS thin film increases by annealing, and maximum response value of wavelength is shifted to the long wavelength. 2) The spectral responses of light are more sensitive in low temperature(160K) than in room temperature. 3) Characteristics of the spectral response of light are improved by doping with 0.5wt% impurity.
