Background: Ginsenoside Rg1 (Rg1) has been well documented to be effective against various cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of Rg1 on mechanical stress-induced cardiac injury and its possible mechanism with a focus on the calcium sensing receptor (CaSR) signaling pathway. Methods: Mechanical stress was implemented on rats through abdominal aortic constriction (AAC) procedure and on cardiomyocytes and cardiac fibroblasts by mechanical stretching with Bioflex Collagen I plates. The effects of Rg1 on cell hypertrophy, fibrosis, cardiac function, [Ca2+]i, and the expression of CaSR and calcineurin (CaN) were assayed both on rat and cellular level. Results: Rg1 alleviated cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis, and improved cardiac decompensation induced by AAC in rat myocardial tissue and cultured cardiomyocytes and cardiac fibroblasts. Importantly, Rg1 treatment inhibited CaSR expression and increase of [Ca2+]i, which similar to the CaSR inhibitor NPS2143. In addition, Rg1 treatment inhibited CaN and TGF-b1 pathways activation. Mechanistic analysis showed that the CaSR agonist GdCl3 could not further increase the [Ca2+]i and CaN pathway related protein expression induced by mechanical stretching in cultured cardiomyocytes. CsA, an inhibitor of CaN, inhibited cardiac hypertrophy, cardiac fibrosis, [Ca2+]i and CaN signaling but had no effect on CaSR expression. Conclusion: The activation of CaN pathway and the increase of [Ca2+]i mediated by CaSR are involved in cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis, that may be the target of cardioprotection of Rg1 against myocardial injury.

This study was conducted to minimize the quality degradation of concentrated blueberry juice after $90^{\circ}C$ treatment for 5 min by means of citric acid (CA) and acidic sodium metaphosphate (ASM) as pH modifiers. The highest anthocyanin content was observed at 1% CA+1% ASM (65.747 mg per 100 g) followed by 1% CA (46.022 mg per 100 g) and control (30.864 mg per 100 g). The DPPH radical scavenging activities of 1% CA+1% ASM, 1% CA and control were 87.338, 75.486 and 67.983% in respectively. The elastase inhibitory activity at 1% CA+1% ASM, 1% CA and in the control was 87.338, 75.486 and 67.983%, and the tyrosinase inhibitory of these samples were 77.891, 67.598 and 26.375%, respectively. Anthocyanin contents, DPPH radical scavenging, elastase inhibitory and tyrosinase inhibitory activities were significantly different (p<0.05) between the 1% CA+1% ASM treatment and control. During the heat treatment, quality degradation of concentrated blueberry juice was reduced by the 1% CA+1% ASM treatment, as expected for new acidulants.
The Ca and P balance studies were carried out with two different diets varying Ca levels : the current Korean RDA level(normal Ca diet) and the high level (High Ca diet) which was determined by adding 2SD to mean Ca intake of all subjects. The subjects were sever healthy adult woman, aged from 25 to 32 years old. The metabolic studies were conducted for two weeks with a days recess in between : during the fist week with normal Ca diet and during the second week with high Ca diet. The composition of nutrients excepting Ca of both diets was similar to subjects usual intake. The result were summarized as follows: Mean daily Ca intake was 728.8mg from norma Ca diet and 945.5mg from high Ca diet. Fecal excretion of Ca increased significantly(p<0.05) on high Ca diet, but urinary excretion of Ca did not show any differences between the two diet periods. There were also no significant differences in Ca retention between the two diet periods but it tended to be greater during high Ca diet period: 112.1mg/day during normal Ca diet period vs 208.2mg/day during high Ca diet period. Mean apparent Ca absorption was 41.2% on normal Ca diet and 42.1% on high Ca diet, indicating it was not affected by high Ca intake level used in this study. On the contrary, P retention was significantly increased up to 109.4mg/day with high Ca diet as compared to- 41mg/day with normal Ca diet. There were no significant differences in fecal and urinary excretion of P but those to be lower during high Ca diet period. The above results showed that higher Ca intake more than current RDA(700mg/day), in the level of 945.5mg/day, could increase Ca retention through Ca absorption comparable to the rate appeared on RDA level intake. P retention was also improved by high Ca intake. Therefore, higher Ca intake than the current RDA level seemed to produce favorable effects on bone health in adult women. However, the current RDA level seemed to be relatively appropriate, considering the results that all the subjects but one maintained positive Ca balance with normal Ca diet. To evaluate the performance of a system, one-dimensional 3-neighborhood cellular automata(CA) based pseudo-random generators are widely used in many fields. Although two-dimensional CA and one-dimensional 5-neighborhood CA have been applied for more effective key sequence generation, designing symmetric one-dimensional 5-neighborhood CA corresponding to a given primitive polynomial is a very challenging problem. To solve this problem, studies on one-dimensional 5-neighborhood CA synthesis, such as synthesis method using recurrence relation of characteristic polynomials and synthesis method using Krylov matrix, were conducted. However, there was still a problem with solving nonlinear equations. To solve this problem, a symmetric one-dimensional 5-neighborhood CA synthesis method using a transition matrix of 90/150 CA and a block matrix has recently been proposed. In this paper, we detail the theoretical process of the proposed algorithm and use it to obtain symmetric one-dimensional 5-neighborhood CA corresponding to high-order primitive polynomials.
Three different catalase cDNA clones (CaCat1, CaCat2, and CaCat3) were isolated from hot pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), and their expression patterns were analyzed at the levels of mRNA and enzyme activity. Northern hybridization showed that the three catalase genes were differentially expressed in various organs, and that expression of CaCat1 and CaCat2 was regulated differently by the circadian rhythm. In situ hybridization revealed different spatial distributions of CaCat1 and CaCat2 transcripts in leaf and stem. In response to wounding and paraquat treatment, CaCat1 mRNA increased at 4-12 h in both paraquat-treated and systemic leaves. In contrast, wounding had no significant effect on expression of the catalase genes. The increase of catalase activity in the paraquat-treated and systemic leaves paralleled that of CaCat1 mRNA, but did not match that of CaCat1 mRNA in paraquat-treated stems. Our results suggest that CaCat1 may play a role in responses to environmental stresses.
Transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 from rattlesnakes (rsTRPA1) and boas (bTRPA1) was previously proposed to underlie thermo-sensitive infrared sensing based on transcript enrichment in infrared-sensing neurons and hyper-thermosensitivity expressed in Xenopus oocytes. It is unknown how these TRPA1s show thermosensitivities that overwhelm other thermoreceptors, and why rsTRPA1 is more thermosensitive than bTRPA1. Here, we show that snake TRPA1s differentially require Ca2+ for hyper-thermosensitivity and that predisposition to cytosolic Ca2+ potentiation correlates with superior thermosensitivity. Extracellularly applied Ca2+ upshifted the temperature coefficients (Q10s) of both TRPA1s, for which rsTRPA1, but not bTRPA1, requires cytosolic Ca2+. Intracellular Ca2+ chelation and substitutive mutations of the conserved cytosolic Ca2+-binding domain lowered rsTRPA1 thermosensitivity comparable to that of bTRPA1. Thapsigargin-evoked Ca2+ or calmodulin little affected rsTRPA1 activity or thermosensitivity, implying the importance of precise spatiotemporal action of Ca2+. Remarkably, a single rattlesnake-mimicking substitution in the conserved but presumably dormant cytosolic Ca2+-binding domain of bTRPA1 substantially enhanced thermosensitivity through cytosolic Ca2+ like rsTRPA1, indicating the capability of this single site in the determination of both cytosolic Ca2+ dependence and thermosensitivity. Collectively, these data suggest that Ca2+ is essential for the hyper-thermosensitivity of these TRPA1s, and cytosolic potentiation by permeating Ca2+ may contribute to the natural variation of infrared senses between rattlesnakes and boas.

90/150 CA is a CA completely specified by using rule 90 and rule 150. Since 90/150 CA whose minimal and characteristic polynomials are identical has outstanding randomness, this CA is more attractive than LFSR. Sarkar proposed a scheme based on the 90 uniform CA and the 150 uniform CA. That scheme provided authentication by digital signature and other basic security requirements like confidentiality. In this paper we analyze 90 or 150 uniform CA and give a synthesis method of 2n-cell uniform CA and (2n+1)-cell uniform CA using a special n-cell 90/150 CA. And we propose an effective method of computation of characteristic polynomial corresponding to uniform CA.
Luminescence of bismuth activated CaS, CaS:Bi, prepared in sodium polysulfide is studied. Excitation spectrum of CaS:Bi shows a band at 350 nm due to the recombination process between holes in Na+Ca2+ and electrons in conduction bands, in addition to bands at 260 nm from band gap of CaS, and at 320 nm (1S0→1P1) and at 420 nm (1S0→3P1) from electronic energy transitions of Bi. Emission band at 450 nm is from 3P1→1S0 transition of Bi3+, bands at 500 nm and 580 nm correspond to recombinations of electron donors (Bi3+Ca2+ and VS2-) with acceptors (VCa2+ and Na+Ca2+). Emission band of 3P1→1S0 transition is shifted to longer wavelength from CaS:Bi to BaS:Bi, due to the increase of the Stokes shift by the decrease of the crystal field parameter from CaS:Bi to BaS:Bi.

Three cDNA clones encoding rice calmodulin (CaM) isoforms (OsCaM-1, OsCaM-2, and OsCaM-3) were isolated from a rice cDNA library constructed from suspension-cultured rice cells treated with fungal elicitor. The coding regions of OsCaM-1 and O.sCaM-2 were 89% homologous at DNA Ievel, whereas the 5' and 3' untranslated regions were highly divergent. The polypeptides encoded by OsCaM-1 and OsCaM-2 was identical except two conservative substitution at position 8 and 75. The coding region of OsCaM-3 was consist of a typical conserved CaM domain and an additional C-terminal extension. The amino acid sequence of conserved CaM domain of OsCaM-3 shared only 86% identity with that OsCaM-1. The OsCaM-3 cDNA is belongs to a novel group of calmodulin gene due to its C-terminal extension of 38 amino acids, a large number of which are positively charged. The extension also contains a C-terminal CaaX-box prenylation site (CVlL). Genomic Southern analysis revealed at least six copies of CaM or CaM-related genes, suggesting that calmodulin may be represented by a small multigene family in the rice geneme. Expression of OsCaM gene was examined through Northern blot analysis. Transcript level of OsCaM-3 was increased by treatment with a fungal elicitor, whereas the OsCaM-1 and OsCaM-2 genes did not respond to the fungal elicitor. The expression of OsCaM-3 gene was remarkable inhibited in the rice cells treated with cyclosporine A, calcinurin inhibitor.

$(Zn_{1-x}Ca_x)_2SiO_4$:Mn phosphors doped with Ca were synthesized by solid state reaction method. $(Zn_{1-x}Ca_x)_2SiO_4$:Mn phosphors showed XRD patterns of Willemite structure. Also, $CaSiO_3$ structure and new peak near 610 nm in $(Zn_{1-x}Ca_x)_2SiO_4$:Mn with increasing value of x were observed from XRD and PL. The new peak near 610 nm in $(Zn_{1-x}Ca_x)_2SiO_4$:Mn with doping Ca was attributed to formation of $CaSiO_3$.
