  • In this study, the effect of extract of Corydalis yanhusuo (ECT) used in Oriental medicine therapy was investigated on the cell growth and apoptosis of HepG2 human hepatoma cells. It was found that ECT could inhibit the cell growth effectively in a dose-dependent manner, which was associated with morphological change and apoptotic cell death such as formation of apoptotic bodies, DNA fragmentation and increased populations of apoptotic-sub G1 phase. And we observed the effects of ECT on loss of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), using the JC-1 probe by DNA flow cytometric analysis. Apoptosis of HepG2 cells by ECT was associated with a down-regulation of anti apoptotic Bcl-2 expression, inhibitor of apoptosis proteins (IAPs) expression and proteolytic activation of caspase-3 and caspase-9. However, ECT did not affect the pro-apoptotic Bax expression and activity of caspase-8. ECT treatment also concomitant degradation and /or inhibition of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), phospholipase C-1 ($PLC{\gamma}1$). Furthermore, ECT treatment caused a dose-dependent inhibition of iNOS and cyclooxygenase-2 (Cox-2). Additionally ECT have been implicated in the regulation of telomerase expression. ECT treatment induced the down-regulation of telomerase reverse transcriptase mRNA (hTERT) expression of HepG2 cells. Taken together, these findings suggest that ECT may be a potential chemotherapeutic agent for the control of HepG2 human hepatoma cells.

  • In general. fiber-optic medical endoscopes are made from glass step index (SI) fibers. These endoscopes have limitations in both image quality and mechanical properties. In particular. the image resolution of the SI endoscopes is limited to about 5$\mu$m. In this study the image resolution of plastic graded index (GRIN) super-resolution image guides with pixel sizes from 7 to 2.5 $\mu$m were measured and compared with those of 91ass SI image guides. There is an improvement in resolution of the plastic GRIN image guides as the microfiber diameter is reduced from 7 $\mu$m to 2.5 $\mu$m. The measured resolution of plastic GRIN image guide with 2.5 $\mu$m microfibers is more than a factor of two higher than that of g1ass SI image guide with 5$\mu$m microfibers. This new design of optical systems could have a major impact on a wide array of future optical systems used in defense. industrial, and medical applications.

  • The objective of this research was to develop a glutamate enzyme sensor for rapid determinations of glutamate in samples. Glutamate oxidase was immobilized onto activated nylon, chitosan and other membranes. The enzymic and nonactin membranes were attached to an ammonia electrode to detect ammonia generated by the reaction between glutamate oxidase and glutamate. The enzyme immobilized on activated nylon membrane was stable for 2 months, and was able to perform about 250 glutamate determinations without losing activities. The enzyme immobilized on chitosan membrane had higher enzyme activity, but was not as much stable as that immobilized on nylon. The glutamate biosensor was able to accurately determine $0.1{\sim}5\;mM$ of glutamate in samples.

  • A unimorph piezoelectric cantilever generator with an interdigitated electrode (IDE) was developed for vibration energy harvester applications driven in the longitudinal mode. Hard lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramic with a high $Q_m$ of 1,280 was used as the piezoelectric active material. Ten PZT sheets produced by tape casting were laminated and co-fired with an Ag/Pd IDE at $1,050^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. The approximately $280{\mu}m$-thick co-fired PZT laminate with the IDE was attached to a stainless steel substrate with an adhesive epoxy for the fabrication of an IDE unimorph cantilever. Its energy harvesting characteristics were evaluated: an output power of $1.1{\mu}W$ at 120 Hz across the resistive load of $700k{\Omega}$ was obtained, corresponding to a normalized power factor of $4.1{\mu}W/(G^2{\cdot}cm^3)$.

  • Tin oxide thin films were fabricated on glass substrates by the successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method at room temperature and ambient pressure. Before measuring their properties, all samples were annealed at $500^{\circ}C$ for 2 h in air. Film thickness increased with the number of cycles; X-ray diffraction patterns for the annealed $SnO_2$ thin films indicated a $SnO_2$ single phase. Thickness of the $SnO_2$ films increased from 12 to 50 nm as the number of cycles increased from 20 to 60. Although the optical transmittance decreased with thickness, 50 nm $SnO_2$ thin films exhibited a high value of more than 85%. Regarding electronic properties, sheet resistance of the films decreased as thickness increased; however, the measured resistivity of the thin film was nearly constant with thickness ($3{\times}10^{-4}ohm/cm$). From Hall measurements, the 50 nm thickness $SnO_2$ thin film had the highest mobility of the samples ($8.6cm^2/(V{\cdot}s)$). In conclusion, optical and electronic properties of $SnO_2$ thin films could be controlled by adjusting the number of SILAR cycles.

  • [ $TiO_2$ ] nanotubes for photocatalytic application have been synthesized by hydrothermal method. $TiO_2$ nanotubes are formed by washing process after reaction in alkalic solution. Nanotubes with different morphology have been fabricated by changing NaOH concentration, temperature and time. $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were treated inside NaOH aqueous solution in a Teflon vessel at $110^{\circ}C$ for 20 h, after which they were washed with HCl aqueous solution and deionized water. Nanotube with the most perfect morphology was formed from 0.1 N HCl washing treatment. $TiO_2$ nanotube was also obtained when the precursor was washed with other washing solutions such as $NH_4OH$, NaCl, $K_2SO_4$, and $Na_2SO_3$. Therefore, it was suggested that $Na^+$ ion combined inside the precursor compound slowly comes out from the structure, leaving nanosheet morphology of $TiO_2$ compounds, which in turn become the nanotube in the presence of hydroxyl ion. To stabilize the sheet morphology, the different type of washing treatment solution might be considered such as amine class compounds.

  • Bacterial meningitis is a rare complication of epidural block. As epidural abscess, subarachnoid infection associated with epidural catheters are related to the treatment of pain in diabetic patient whose immune responses have been impaired. A 51-year-old male with non-insulin dependent diabetes came to the pain clinic with neuropathic gain on right thigh and amputated stump of right leg. Treatment consisted of continuous epidural block and subcutaneous tunnelling and epidural morphine with bupivacaine was given on an outpatient basis. Two months later, the patient noted a diffuse frontal headache, projectile vomiting and stiffness neck. These symptoms became more aggrevated over the following 24 h and temperature went up to $38.4^{\circ}C$. A diagnostic lumbar puncture revealed CSF total protein of 747 mg/dl, glucose of 43 mg/dl, and $4320\;WBC/mm^3$. Cultures of epidural catheter tip grew hemolytic staphylococcus epidermidis. A chest x-ray and brain CT scan were negative. Antibiotic therapy with penicillin G and chloramphenicol was given for 15 days. Recovery was uneventful.
