The objective of this study was to determine the effects of moisture content and screw speed on the physical properties of extruded soy protein isolate (SPI). Expansion index, water absorption index, texture, integrity index, color, and nitrogen solubility index of extruded SPI were analyzed to determine the relationship with extrusion conditions. Extrusion conditions were moisture content (40, 50, and 60%) at a fixed die temperature ($140^{\circ}C$) and screw speed (250 rpm). The other extrusion conditions were screw speed (150, 250, and 330 rpm) at a fixed moisture content (55%) and die temperature ($140^{\circ}C$). Specific mechanical energy (SME) input decreased as moisture content increased from 40 to 60%. However, SME input increased as screw speed increased from 150 to 330 rpm. Expansion ratio and piece density decreased as moisture content and screw speed increased, and specific length increased as moisture content and screw speed increased. The extruded SPI at 40% moisture content had higher water absorption index, texture, and color differences than those of the extruded SPI at other moisture contents (50 and 60%). however, the extruded SPI at 40% moisture content had lower integrity index and cutting strength than those of the extruded SPI at other moisture contents (50 and 60%). In conclusion, the physical properties of extruded SPI were more affected by moisture content than screw speed.
The processing conditions for the production of meat snack were investigated by using a Bonnot Single-screw extruder Pork and thicken meat were mixed with corn flour in various ratios, respectively, and extruded at different screw speeds(120-260 rpm). As the meat content was increased, the expansion ratio, water absortion index, lightness and yellowness of the extrudate were decreased. The expansion ratio tended to increase with an increase in screw speed, but the opposite relationship was observed with the maximum meat content(meat corn flour=2:1). The maximum water absorption ratio was obtained at the screw speed of 190rpm when the meat content was relatively low, but it moved to 120 rpm as the meat content was increased. The bulk density of the extrudate was significantly increased as the meat content exceeded 50% and no significant differences in bulk density was found at the highter meat content. The redness increased as the moisture content was increased. The maximum breaking strength was attained at the meat-corn flour ratio 1 : 1, and the breaking strength tended to decreased as the screw speed increased.

Objective : To identify the accuracy and efficiency of the computed tomographic (CT)-based navigation system on upper cervical instrumentation, particularly C1 lateral mass and C2 pedicle screw fixation compared to previous reports. Methods : Between May 2005 and March 2014, 25 patients underwent upper cervical instrumentation via a CT-based navigation system. Seven patients were excluded, while 18 patients were involved. There were 13 males and five females; resulting in four degenerative cervical diseases and 14 trauma cases. A CT-based navigation system and lateral fluoroscopy were used during the screw instrumentation procedure. Among the 58 screws inserted as C1-2 screws fixation, their precise positions were evaluated by postoperative CT scans and classified into three categories : in-pedicle, non-critical breach, and critical breach. Results : Postoperatively, the precise positions of the C1-2 screws fixation were 81.1% (47/58), and 8.6% (5/58) were of non-critical breach, while 10.3% (6/58) were of critical breach. Most (5/6, 83.3%) of the critical breaches and all of non-critical breaches were observed in the C2 pedicle screws and there was only one case of a critical breach among the C1 lateral mass screws. There were three complications (two vertebral artery occlusions and a deep wound infection), but no postoperative instrument-related neurological deteriorations were seen, even in the critical breach cases. Conclusion : Although CT-based navigation systems can result in a more precise procedure, there are still some problems at the upper cervical spine levels, where the anatomy is highly variable. Even though there were no catastrophic complications, more experience are needed for safer procedure.
In this study, in order to utilize the seawater as a heat source at Gangneung city near the East Sea in Korea, an annual heating performance of a screw heat pump was simulated. For a simulation, the maximum heating capacity of heat pump was assumed at 3.5 MW. An ambient temperature at Gangneung city was calculated from the TMY2 weather data, while the seawater temperature was calculated from the regression equation based on the measurement by the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute of Korea. The heating load was assumed linearly dependent on the ambient temperature, while the maximum heating load was assumed to appear when the ambient temperature is below $-2.4^{\circ}C$, which is the temperature of TAC 2.5% for heating at Gangneung city. A heat pump performance at full-load was calculated from the regression equation, which involves refrigerant's evaporating and condensing temperatures, based on a commercial screw compressor performance map. A heating supply temperature which determines refrigerant's condensing temperature was assumed linearly dependent on the heating load. A performance degradation due to the part-load operation of heat pump was also considered. Simulation results show that an annual heating coefficient of performance ($COP_H$) of a seawater-source screw heat pump is approximately 2.8 and that it is necessary to improve part-load performance to increase an annual performance of the heat pump.

Statement of problem: Dental implant procedure has been recognized as a very effective treatment to rehabilitate fully or partially edentulous patients. However, mechanical failures such as screw loosening, screw fracture have been still reported frequently. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of tungsten carbide/carbon coating, which has superior hardness and frictional wear resistance, on implant-abutment screw loosening of three different joint connections after one million cyclic loading. Material and methods: The values of detorque before and after loading were measured in three different joint connections (Osstem Implant, Korea), one external butt joint, US II implant system and two internal cones, SS II and GS II system. The values of detorque before loading was analyzed by one-way ANOVA, and two-way ANOVA and Scheffe' test were performed for the value of detorque after loading. Results: 1. The values of initial detorque of tungsten carbide/carbon coated Ti alloy screw were smaller those of Ti alloy screw (P<.01), and there were no differences among implant systems in each screw (P>.05). 2. In comparison of loss rate of detorque value after cyclic loading, US II system was greater than SS II and GS II system but there was no difference between SS II and GS II system (P<.01). 3. Loss rates of detorque value after cyclic loading decreased consistently at tungsten carbide/carbon coated Ti alloy screw comparing with Ti alloy screw in all implant systems (P<.01), and there were no differences among three systems in reduction of loss rates by using tungsten carbide/carbon coated Ti alloy screw (P>.05). Conclusion: Tungsten carbide/carbon coating to increase preload with reduction of friction resistance was a effective way to decrease screw loosening by functional loading.

Many studies on crystal growth mechanisms of the hen egg-white lysozyme protein crystals have mainly performed by optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM). As results, two types of growth mechanisms, which are a two-dimensional nucleation mechanism and a spiral growth mechanism, were identified. However, there was no direct evidence of grown-in screw dislocations at the spiral sites. We first observed the screw dislocations in tetragonal lysozyme crystals using synchrotron X-ray topography. In addition, to confirm the characteristics of dislocations, we have observed some elastic constants in lysozyme crystals in terms of the sound velocity measurement by pulse echo methods. Tetragonal hen egg-white lysozyme crystals were grown by the concentration gradient method. The crystals were grown in test tubes, with an inner diameter of 8 ㎜ and 80 ㎜ in length, held vertically. The test tubes were kept at 23C for 2 weeks. The maximum size of crystals were 3×3×4 ㎟. The high quality crystals were examined by Laue topography with a water filter using synchrotron radiation. Figure is a X-ray topograph. Several straight screw dislocations were observed. We also determined Burgers vector to be a [110] direction. The measurement of sound velocity was performed by the digital signal processing method. the crystals were placed in stainless steel vessel, which was filled with lysozyme solution used for crystal growth. We observed the longitudinal sound velocity along the [110] direction in the tetragonal is obtained to be 1817 ㎧. Therefore, Young modulus and shear modulus were evaluated to be 2.70 Gpa and 1.02 Gpa, respectively, if we assumed Poisson ratio is 0.33. These results will be discussed at the meeting.

Objective : To clarify the landmark for deciding the entry point for C1 lateral mass screws via the posterior arch by using 3-dimensional (3D) computed images. Methods : Resnick insisted that the C1 posterior arch could be divided into pure posterior and lateral lamina (C1 pedicle). Authors studied where this transition point (TP) is located between the posterior lamina and the C1 pedicle and how it can be recognized. The 3D computed images of 86 cadaver C1s (M : F=45 : 41) were used in this study. Results : The superior ridge of the C1 posterior arch had 2 types of orientation. One was in the vertical direction in the C1 posterior lamina and the other was in the horizontal direction in the C1 pedicle. The TP was located at the border between the 2 areas, the same site as the posterior end of the groove of the vertebral artery. On posterior-anterior projection, the posterior arch was sharpened abruptly at TP. We were unable to identify the TP in 6.4% of specimens due to complete or partial osseous bridges. A total of 93.8% of the TP were located between the most enlarged point of the spinal canal and the medial wall of the vertebral artery. Conclusion : The anatomic entry zone of C1 lateral laminar screws was clarified and identified based on the TP by using preoperative 3D computed images.

Objective : In the present study, authors retrospectively reviewed the clinical outcomes of halo-vest immobilization (HVI) versus surgical fixation in patients with odontoid fracture after either non-surgical treatment (HVI) or with surgical fixation. Methods : From April 1997 to December 2008, we treated a total of 60 patients with upper cervical spine injuries. This study included 31 (51.7%) patients (22 men, 9 women; mean age, 39.3 years) with types II and III odontoid process fractures. The average follow-up was 25.1 months. We reviewed digital radiographs and analyzed images according to type of injury and treatment outcomes, following conservative treatment with HVI and surgical management with screw fixation. Results : There were a total of 31 cases of types II and III odontoid process fractures (21 odontoid type II fractures, 10 type III fractures). Fifteen patients underwent HVI (10 type II fractures, 5 type III fractures). Nine (60%) out of 15 patients who underwent HVI experienced successful healing of odontoid fractures. The mean period for bone healing was 20.2 weeks. Sixteen patients underwent surgery including anterior screw fixation (6 cases), posterior C1-2 screw fixation (8), and transarticular screw fixation (2) for healing the odontoid fractures (11 type II fractures, 5 type III fractures). Fifteen (93.8%) out of 16 patients who underwent surgery achieved healing of cervical fractures. The average bone healing time was 17.6 weeks. Conclusion : The overall healing rate was 60% after HVI and 93.8% with surgical management. Patients treated with surgery showed a higher fusion rate and shorter bony healing time than patients who received HVI. However, prospective studies are needed in the future to define better optimal treatment and cost-effective perspective for the treatment of odontoid fractures.
Background: This study was performed to identify the incidence of screw in-type lateral anchor pull-out in patients older than 60 years who underwent rotator cuff repair for large to massive rotator cuff tear (RCT). Methods: We reviewed 25 patients over 60 who were diagnosed with large to massive RCT and underwent arthroscopic rotator cuff repair in our hospital from March 2017 to February 2021. Preoperative tear size (anterior to posterior, medial to lateral) was measured via preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). All 25 patients underwent MRI scanning on postoperative day 1 and at 3 months after surgery. The change of anchor position was measured in axial views on MRI images postoperative day 1 and 3 months after surgery. And it was statistically compared according to bone mineral density (BMD), sex, and number of lateral anchors. Results: Two MRIs (postoperative day 1 and 3 months) in 25 patients were compared. Anchor pull-out occurred in six patients during 3 months (6.7%), and the mean pull-out length difference was 1.56 mm (range, 0.16-2.58 mm). There was no significant difference in the number of pull-out anchors, degree of pull-out difference by comparing BMD (A, BMD≤-2.5; B, BMD>-2.5), sex, or number of anchors used in each surgery (C, two anchors; D, three anchors) (p>0.05). Conclusions: Pull-out of screw in-type anchors was rarely observed and the mean pull-out length difference was negligibly small in our study. The screw in-type lateral anchor seems to be a decent option without concern of anchor pull-out even in elderly patients.
