통영 주변 해역 수질의 공간분포 및 월 변화 특성 (Spatial Distributions and Monthly Variations of Water Quality in Coastal Seawater of Tongyeong, Korea)

  • 연안 해역을 효과적으로 관리하고 어장을 이용하기 위한 기초자료로 활용하기 위해 통영주변해역에 대하여 환경 특성을 조사하였다. 수온의 변동범위는 $5.17{\sim}27.11^{\circ}C$이었으며, 1월에 낮았으며, 8월 하순에 가장 높았다. 염분의 변동 범위는 24.04~34.39 psu이었으며, 7월에 일시적으로 낮았으며, 11월 이후에 회복되었다. DO는 변동범위는 4.17~12.38 mg/L이었으며, 저층에서는 5월부터 원문만과 북신만 주변에서 4 mg/L 이하의 낮은 농도가 관측되었다. $NO_2$-N, $NO_3$-N, $PO_4$-P 농도는 3월부터는 아주 낮았으며, 10월 이후부터는 높아졌다. 투명도의 평균치는 6 m 정도였으며, 원문만에서 특이하게 높았다. COD 농도는 수온이 높은 여름에 높았으며, Chl. a 농도는 7~10월에 높았다. 수질인자를 이용하여 군집을 분석하였으며, 크게 3개 그룹으로 나눠졌다. 이들 3개 해역의 특성을 요약하면 원문만 해역(I) 표층은 담수가 많이 유입되고, DO, Chl. a 농도 및 투명도가 높고, 저층에서는 DO 농도가 낮으며, $NH_4$-N의 농도가 높은 해역이다. 외해(III)는 염분, $NO_3$-N 농도가 높고, Chl. a 농도가 낮은 해역으로 구분된다. 그리고 통영주변 해역(II)은 I 해역과 III 해역의 중간 특징을 가지는 것으로 보인다. 그리고 이번 조사 해역을 가막만, 광양만과 비교해보면 굴이 먹이를 많이 섭취하는 여름철에 이번 조사의 해역 모두가 가막만과 광양만보다 $NO_3$-N 농도가 상당히 낮고 먹이생물의 양을 나타내는 클로로필 농도도 낮았다. 또 우렁쉥이가 먹이를 많이 섭취하는 수온이 낮은 시기에도 가막만, 광양만보다 클로로필 농도가 낮은 특성을 보였다.

미세조작된 생쥐수정란의 초급속 재동결융해 후 생존성 (Viabilities of Biopsied Mouse Embryos after Ultrarapid Refreezing and Thawing)

  • 본 연구는 미세조작된 수정란의 초급속 재동결 후 발생능을 조사하기 위해서 수행하였다. 먼저 4세포기 생쥐 수정란으로부터 할구세포 한 개를 떼어내고 이들 수정란을 동결액에 넣어 상온에서 2.5분간 평형시킨 다음, 0.25ml straws에 넣어 곧바로 액체질소에 침지시켰다. 4세포기 수정란의 동결액으로는 4.0M(ethylene glycol 및 0.25M sucrose가 함유된 dPBS를 사용하였따. 상실배기 수정란의 동결을 위해서는 항동해제로 4.0M ethylene glycol 대신에 5.0M glycerol을 사용하였다. 융해후 biopsied 4세포기 수정란을 M16 배양액에서 상실배기까지 발달시킨 다음 상실배기용 동결액을 이용하여 초급속 재동결을 실시하였다. 재동결융해 후 발달한 biopsied 배반포기 수정란을 대리모에 이식하여 이들 수정란의 생존성을 검토하였다. 제1차 동결후 biopsied 수정란의 체외발달률은 78%로서 정상적인 수정란의 발달율(91%) 보다 낮은 성적으로 보여주었으나 (P<0.01), 이들 수정란의 이식 후 임신률은 각각 25 및 30%로서 두 실험군간에 차이가 인정되지 않았다. 그리고 biopside 상실배기 수정란의 초급속 재동결후 체외 발달률 및 임신률은 각각 89와 27%로서 biopsied 되지 않은 수정란의 성적 (각각 95 및 28%)과 유사하였다. 이러한 결과를 종합하여 볼 때, 본 연구에서 사용된 초급된 재동결 과정이 미세조작된 생쥐수정란의 생존성에 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다.

높은 기저 난포 자극 호르몬 수치를 가지는 환자와 고령 환자의 체외수정시술을 위한 과배란 유도에서 GnRH antagonist 다회 투여법과 GnRH agonist 장기요법의 효용성에 대한 연구 (Comparison of IVF-ET Outcomes between GnRH Antagonist Multiple Dose Protocol and GnRH Agonist Long Protocol in Patients with High Basal FSH Level or Advanced Age)

  • Objectives: To compare the efficacy of GnRH antagonist multiple dose protocol (MDP) with that of GnRH agonist long protocol (LP) in controlled ovarian hyperstimulation for in vitro fertilization in patients with high basal FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) level or old age, a retrospective analysis was done. Methods: Two hundred ninety four infertile women (328 cycles) who were older than 41 years of age or had elevated basal FSH level (> 8.5 mIU/mL) were enrolled in this study. The patients had undergone IVF-ET after controlled ovarian hyperstimulation using GnRH antagonist multiple dose protocol (n=108, 118 cycles) or GnRH agonist long protocol (n=186, 210 cycles). The main outcome measurements were cycle cancellation rate, consumption of gonadotropins, the number of follicles recruited and total oocytes retrieved. The number of fertilized oocytes and transferred embryos, the clinical pregnancy rates, and the implantation rates were also reviewed. And enrolled patients were divided into three groups according to their age and basal FSH levels; Group A - those who were older than 41 years of age, Group B - those with elevated basal FSH level (> 8.5 mIU/mL) and Group C - those who were older than 41 years of age and with elevated basal FSH level (> 8.5 mIU/mL). Poor responders were classified as patients who had less than 4 retrieved oocytes, or those with $E_2$ level <500 pg/mL on the day of hCG injection or those who required more than 45 ampules of exogenous gonadotropin for stimulation. Results: The cancellation rate was lower in the GnRH antagonist group than in GnRH agonist group, but not statistically significant (6.8% vs. 9.5%, p=NS). The amount of used gonadotropins was significantly lower in GnRH antagonist group than in agonist group ($34.8{\pm}11.3$ ampules vs. $44.1{\pm}13.4$ ampules, p<0.001). The number of follicles > 14 mm in diameter was significantly higher in agonist group than in antagonist group ($6.7{\pm}4.6$ vs. $5.0{\pm}3.4$, p<0.01). But, there were no significant differences in clinical pregnancy rate (24.5% in antagonist group vs. 27.4% in agonist group, p=NS) and implantation rate (11.4% in antagonist group vs. 12.0% in agonist group, p=NS) between two groups. Mean number of retrieved oocytes was significantly higher in GnRH agonist LP group than in GnRH antagonist MDP group ($5.4{\pm}3.5$ vs. $6.6{\pm}5.0$, p<0.0001). But, the number of mature and fertilized oocytes, and the number of good quality (grade I and II) and transferred embryos were not different between two groups. In each group A, B, and C, the rate of poor response did not differ according to stimulation protocols. Conclusions: In conclusion, for infertile women expected poor ovarian response such as who are old age or has elevated basal FSH level, a protocol including a controlled ovarian hyperstimulation using GnRH antagonist appears at least as effective as that using a GnRH agonist, and may offer the advantage of reducing gonadotropin consumption and treatment period. However, much work remains to be done in optimizing the GnRH antagonist protocols and individualizing these to different cycle characteristics.

청베도라치, Pictiblennius yatabei의 산란습성(産卵習性), 난발생과정(卵發生過程)및 부화자어(孵化仔魚)의 형태(形態) (Morphology of Larvae, Egg Development and Spawning Behavior of the Blenniid Fish, Pictiblennius yatabei (Jordan et Snyder))

  • 1991년(年) 6월(月), 경상남도 통영군 산양면 저도 어류양식장 가두리 부이 아래에 유착한 진주담치, Mytilus edulis와 굴, Crassotrea gigas 패각(貝殼)을 계속 관찰하던 중 성숙한 친어(親魚)들의 산난습성(産卵習性)을 관찰(觀察)할 수 있었고, 패각(貝殼)의 내면에 자연 산란한 난(卵)의 발생과정(發生過程)및 부화(孵化)한 자어(仔魚)들을 사육하면서 형태발달을 관찰하였다. 1. 산란기(産卵期)의 수컷은 눈 위의 피변(皮弁)이 더욱 가늘어 길어지고, 패각(貝殼) 내에서 산난(産卵)한 난(卵)을 보호하며, 산난(産卵)한 난군(卵群)은 좌우 양쪽 패각(貝殼)내면에 한층을 이루어 부착되어 있다. 2. 수정난(受精卵)은 침성점착난(沈性粘着卵)으로 난경(卵徑)이 0.72~0.80mm(n=50)로 담황색(淡黃色)과 자주색의 많은 소유구(小油球)를 가지고 있으며, 사육수온 평균 $23.3^{\circ}C$에서 배체(胚體) 형성(形成)후 102~105시간만에 부화(孵化)한다. 3. 부화직후(孵化直後) 자어(仔魚)는 평균전장 3.08mm로 입과 항문이 열리기 시작하며 근절수(筋節數)는 6+27~28=33~34개이다. 흑색소포(黑色素胞)는 주둥이, 두정부(頭頂部), 가슴지느러미 기저부분 및 복부에 출현하며 꼬리부분의 배쪽 정중선의 좌우에는 각각 일렬로 약 20개가 있다. 4. 부화후(孵化後) 7일째의 자어(仔魚)는 평균전장 4.67mm로 난황과 유구가 완전하게 흡수되고 처음으로 꼬리지느러미 원기(原基)가 출현한다. 5. 부화후(孵化後) 9일째는 평균전장 5.35mm로 척색말단(脊索末端)이 위로 굽어지고, 부화후(孵化後) 13일째의 후기자어(後期仔魚)는 평균전장 6.65mm로 두부(頭部)가 커지고 체고(體高)는 높아진다.

병아리 및 청둥오리에 있어서 닭와포자충의 오오시스트 배설상황과 면역원성 (Oocyst Production and immunogenicity of Cryptosporidium baileyi in chickens and mallards)

  • 한국산 Cryptosporidium baileyi를 2일령의 각 청둥오리와 병아리에 $2{\;}{\times}{\;}10^6$개의 오오시스트와 그 10배단계 희석계열을 $2{\;}{\times}{\;}10^2$까지 5단계를 만들어 경구접종시켜 오오시스트 배설상황과 여러 장기내 발육기의 분포상황을 조사하고나서 초감염내과 조류에 처음에 40 mg/30 g 그 24시간 후에 10 mg/30 g의 carrageenan을 복강내 투여하고 그 6시간 후에 다시 $2{\;}{\times}{\;}10^6$개의 오오시스트를 재차접종하여 면역원성을 조사하였다. 오오시스트 투여량이 많을수록 patent period가 길었고(27-30일간, 병아리: 10-18일간 청둥오리), 오오시스트 배설량도 많았으나(극기에 있어서 $6{\;}{\times}{\;}10^5-3.5{\;}{\times}{\;}10^6$, 병아리: $2{\;}{\times}{\;}10^5-4{\;}{\times}{\;}10^5$, 청둥오리) prepatent period는 짧았다(2-3일간. 병아리: 3-4일간, 청둥오리). 한편, 청둥오리에서는 $2{\;}{\times}{\;}10^3{\;}및{\;}2{\;}{\times}{\;}10^3$의 오오시스트 접종군에서는 오오시스트가 전혀 검출되지 않았다. 오오시스트 경구접종 후 12일에 총배설강과 파브리시우스낭에서 다수의 발육기를 검출할 수 있었는데 병아리가 청둥오리보다 현저하였다. Carrageenan 투여군은 모두 대조군은 병아리에서 $2{\;}{\times}{\;}10^5{\;}및{\;}2{\;}{\times}{\;}10^3$, 그리고 청둥오리에서 이 밖에 $2{\;}{\times}{\;}10^4$의 오오시스트 투여군에서도 재차 접종후 4일에서 14일 및 5일에서 15일까지 분변으로부터 오오시스트가 다소 검출되었다 병아리 및 청둥오리에 있어서 재차접종 직전의 말초혈액내 대식세포수 및 복강내 대식세포 활성은 대조군에 비하여 carrageenan 투여군이 현저하게 낮았다(P < 0.05) 병아리와 청둥오리는 Meblocker인 carrageenan을 투여하였음에도 불구하고 이 원충의 재차감염이 미약하였다는 것은 이 원충의 면역원성이 극히 강력하였다는 것을 뜻한다.

한국장신구의 사치 금제 고찰 (A Study on Luxury Prohibition of Korean Personal Ornaments)

  • The luxury is the expression of human being's ornament instinct. In this study, in order to grasp the moulding system of the Korean's personal ornaments, the process of luxury prohibition was reviewed to search for to which direction the ornaments developed in the frame of the prohibited style connected closely to the character of the personal ornaments. The proiod was fixed from the old society to the late Chosun dynasty era. The beginning of the luxury in Korea seems to be the start of the luxury burial at the time of funeral in the age of Koguryo., In the era of Koguryo, 10th year of King Dongmyung (B. C. 28), in the era of Baekje, 27th year of King Koi(260), the prohibition of dress regulation and the style of dress were conducted. The prohibition of personal ornaments in Silla was started from King Bup:Heung, and in the 9th year of King Heung-Duk, the prohibition was conducted in order to correct the luxury of the nobles and set up the social discipline. In the 11 th of King Il-Sung-Ni-Sa-Kum, the use of gold, silver and jade was prohibited in the civilian circles. The prohibition of Silla was succeeded to Koryo era, and in the 7th year of King Kwangjong(956), the system of Baekgwan Gongbok(uniform for government officials) was set up, and the system of Sasek Gongbok(four color official uniform) was set up in the 11 th year of the same King, and the prohibition of the personal ornaments such as crown and band is considred to have been conducted. The prohibition of gold and silver was conducted in the first year of King Sungjong(982), and in the 4th year of King Chungryul(l260), the order of wearing the dress and hat in accordance with the Yusan dynasty and the Mongolian customs were widely circulated in the royal court and vivilian circles. The strong influence of Mongolia made the taste of the traditional personal ornaments laste. The personal ornaments were used for the nobles until the age of the Unified Sillar but even the common people could use them in case they were rich, and such a circumstances made the use of foreign goods inflated. The prohibition of Koryo era was aimed at the prohibition of the foreign goods of luxury, and the classification of the social status.In the age of Chosun Dynasty, the production of gold and silver was feeble indeed but the oute reason of the prohibition was to eradicate the luxurious tendency, elevate the custom of eradicate the luxurious tendency, elevate the custom of thrift, and moreover, the gold, silver and jade were no the products of Korea and the prohibition was conducted but the true reason was afor the tribute tt China and the classification of status. The prohibition of Chosun dynasty was conducted first in the June of the 3rd year of King Taejo The major contents of prohibition was no use of gold, silver and jade, coral, agate, amber, etc. of th, wives of the Dang-Sang-Kwan (Court Nobleman) or their sons and daughters, and the same pheno menon was common even at the time of marriage. The people engaged in the secret trade there of wert beheaded. The personal ornaments in the prohibition were the pendent trinket, Binyo (crossbar) ceremonial ornamental hat, ring, earring, ornamental knife, hat string, hat ornament, belt, etc. Thl luxurious marriage expenses out of the luxury was severe, and lose of the marriageable age because 0 non-preparing the marriage goods was the national evil. The prohibition oC luxury was hard to bt kept to the nobles or rich people, the same as old days and present days. The prohibition of th{ luxury and personal ornaments of Korea had nothing to do with the commons, and it was limited tc the nobles and rich people. The prohibition was aimed to cultivating the custom of frugality by eradicating the luxurious atmosphere, but it was chiefly due to the tribute to the China and tht discrimination of the. status. We can say that the recent personal ornament was the flower of handi craft industry bloomed in the prohibition and regulation.

인간망막 내피세포주에서 고농도 포도당이 caspase-3 경로를 통해 세포자연사 유도 (High Glucose Induces Apoptosis through Caspase-3 Dependent Pathway in Human Retinal Endothelial Cell Line)

  • 당뇨망막병증은 서구에서 성인들의 실명을 일으키는 원인이다. 당뇨병이 있을 때 고혈당증은 여러 세포 형태에서 세포자연사를 유도하지만 그 기작은 명확하게 밝혀지지 않았다. 본 연구의 목적은 인간망막 내피세포에서 고혈당 포도당이 세포자연사에 미치는 영향에 대하여 알아보았다. 망막 내피세포는 5, 25, 50 mM 포도당이 포함된 IMDM배지에서 37$^{\circ}C$, 5% CO$_2$조정된 항온기에서 24, 36, 48시간 동안 배양하였다. 여러 농도의 포도당을 처리한 인간망막 내피세포 형태의 특징은 위상차현미경으로 관찰하였고, 세포의 생존은 MTT assay를 통해 산정하였다. 고농도 포도당에서 활성산소종인 세포 내의 H$_2$O$_2$는 FOX II assay와 caspase-3 assay에 의한 세포자연사를 통해 측정하였다. 고농도의 포도당을 처리한 세포에서의 DNA분절화는 아가펄스 겔 전기영동을 통해 관찰하였다. 25, 50mM 포도당을 포함한 배양액에 48시간 동안 배양한 세포는 형태가 변하고. 세포자연사에 의해 유도된 DNA 분절화를 관찰 할 수 있었다. 25, 50 mM의 포도당에서 배양한 세포와 5 mM 포도당에서 24, 36, 48 시간 배양한 세포와 비교했을 때 25, 50 mM에서 죽은 세포의 수가 더 많았다. 또한 과산화수소의 양과 caspase-3의 활성은 고농도 포도당을 처리한 세포에서 증가하였다. 결론적으로 고농도 포도당이 배양된 인간망막 내피세포에서 세포자연사를 유도하는 것을 증명하였고, 고혈당증의 유도로 caspase 활성에 의존적인 세포자연사는 증가하였다. 고농도의 포도당이 처리된 세포에서 활성산소종 유발과 caspase-3 활성간의 관계는 아직 조사되지않았다.

슬러리 돈사에서의 슬러리 발생량 및 주요성분 재설정 연구 (The Study to Re-establish the Amount and Major Compositions of Slurry From Seasonal Swine Farms)

  • 양돈농가에서의 돼지의 성장단계별 슬러리 돈사에서 발생되는 슬러리의 량 및 오염물질의 특성을 살펴보면 다음과 같다. 1. 양돈 농가에서의 슬러리 발생량 조사는 봄, 여름, 가을 및 겨울 등 4계절로 구분하여 조사한 결과 평균 슬러리 발생량은 봄철 5.83kg/일/두, 여름철 5.88, 가을철 5.77 및 겨울철 5.62kg/두/일로 평균 5.78kg/두/일 인 것으로 조사되었으나, 이를 평균 돼지체중 60kg을 기준으로 하여 돼지의 슬러리 발생량을 환산하면 평균 4.49kg/두/일 인 것으로 조사되었다. 2. 돼지슬러리의 수분함량은 평균 95.5%로 조사되었으며, 자돈의 경우 수분함량은 평균 95.5%였으나 여름철에 96.5%로 타계절에 비하여 약간 높은 것으로 조사되었으며, 육성 비육돈의 경우에는 평균 수분 함량이 93.9%로 자돈사 및 분만사의 평균 수분 함량인 95.4% 및 97.2% 보나 낮은 것으로 조사되었다 (p<005). 3. 슬러리의 비료성분은 돼지의 성장단계에 따라 다른 것으로 조사되었으며 N성분의 경우 자돈사 0.37%, 육성비육사 0.29%, 임신사 0.28% 및 분만사 0.15%로 분만사가 가장 낮았다(p<0.05). 이러한 경향은 $P_2O_5$$K_2O$ 성분에서도 같은 경향으로 조사되었다. 4. 돼지 슬러리의 유기물 함량의 경우에도 $2.7%{\sim}5.9%$까지 차이를 보이고 있었으며, OM/N은 평균 16.4로 조사되었다. 5. 슬러리 돈사형태별 슬러리의 BOD 농도는 평균 $21,856.3mg/{\ell}$로 조사되었으며, 돈사별로는 분만사에서 배출된 슬러리의 BOD 농도가 $16,211mg/{\ell}$로 가장 낮게 조사되었다. 반면에 비육사 $38,537mg/{\ell}$, 자돈사 $18,990mg/{\ell}$, 임신사 $23,687mg/{\ell}$로 비육사에서 배출된 슬러리의 BOD 농도가 가장 높은 것으로 조사되었다. 6. 돼지슬러리의 평균 COD 농도는 $33,883mg/{\ell}$로 조사되었으며, 분만사의 경우 $24,587mg/{\ell}$로 농도가 가장 낮은 것으로 조사되었다. 그리고 자돈사 $18,990mg/{\ell}$, 비육사 $45,886mg/{\ell}$, 임신사 $34,130mg/{\ell}$로 조사되었다. 그리고 SS 농도의 경우 평균농도는 $41,253mg/{\ell}$로 조사되었다.

증숙 및 발효한 천문동의 항균활성과 특성 (Evaluation of Antimicrobial Activity of Steamed and Fermented Asparagus cochinchinenesis)

  • 본 연구에서는 증숙처리 후 발효를 통해 천문동 에틸아세테이트 추출물의 항균활성이 증가하는지 알아보고자 하였다. 선행연구에서 S. aureus와 P. aeruginosa에 대한 항균활성이 나타나지 않았던 L. plantarum KCCM 11322로 발효한 천문동의 경우 증숙 처리 후 발효를 하였을 때 25 mg/mL 추출물 농도에서 생장 저해환이 나타났다. 증숙 후 발효한 천문동의 최소저해농도를 측정한 결과 선행연구에서 L. mesenteroides 4395로 발효한 천문동 추출물의 경우 최소저해농도가 25 mg/mL였으나 증숙 처리 후 발효시 10 mg/mL인 것으로 나타났다. P. aeruginosa에 대한 최소저해 농도는 증숙 처리 후 발효하였을 때 모든 추출물이 5 mg/mL인 것으로 나타났다. 이를 통해 천문동을 증숙 처리 후 발효를 하면 증숙 처리 하지 않고 발효한 천문동 보다 항균활성이 개선될 수 있을 것으로 사료되며 이는 증숙 처리를 통해 항균활성이 있는 것으로 보고된 폴리페놀과 플라보노이드의 함량이 증가하기 때문인 것으로 판단된다. 총 당의 경우 증숙 처리시 감소되는 것으로 나타났고 환원당의 경우 증숙 처리를 통해 증가한 것으로 나타났다. 발효 후 총당과 환원당은 모두 크게 감소하여 젖산균의 발효를 통해 당이 소비된 것으로 사료된다. 발효에 따른 pH 및 산도의 변화는 L. plantarum KCCM 11322로 발효하였을 때 L. mesenteroides 4395와 L. sakei 383로 발효한 것 보다 완만하게 변화하였으며 수분 및 회분은 발효균주에 따른 차이가 나타나지 않았다.

간흡충증(肝吸虫症)의 역학(疫學) - I. 고도유행지(高度流行地) 김해지방(金海地方)에 있어서의 간흡충감염(肝吸虫感染)의 현황(現況)과 자연추이(自然推移) (Epidemiological Studies of Clonorchiasis. - I. Current Status and Natural Transition of the Endemicity of Clonorchis sinensis in Gimhae Gun and Delta, a High Endemic area in Korea)

  • As a part of the epidemiological studies of clonorchiasis, this study was conducted to evaluate the current endemicity and the natural transition of the Clonorchis infection in Gimhae Gun and delta area a high endemic area in Korea in recent years, prior to the introduction of praziquantel which will eventually influence the status of the prevalence. The data obtained in this study in 1983 were evaluated for natural transition of the infection in comparison with those obtained 16 years ago in 1967 by the author(Kim, 1974). The areas of investigation, villages and schools surveyed, methods and techniques used in this study were the same as in 1967, except for the contents of the questionnaire for raw freshwater fish consumption by the local inhabitants. 1) The prevalence rate of clonorchiasis in the general population of the villages was 48.1% on the average out of a total of 484 persons examined. The average of those of the riverside-delta area was 65.2% and 43.0% in the inland area. Among the schoolchildren, the prevalence rate was 8.2% on the average out of a total of 1,423 examined. By area, the prevalence rate was 10.8% in the riverside delta area and 2.8% in the inland area. By sex, difference in the prevalence was seen only in the inhabitants of the inland area showing 52.4% in the male and 33.5% in the female. 2) In the natural transition of the infection, the prevalence rate among the inhabitants has decreased from 68.8% in 1967 to 48.1% in 1983, and in the schoolchildren from 56.4% in 1967 to 8.2% in 1983. The reduction rate was higher in the riverside-delta area than in the inland area. 3) In the prevalence rate by age, 11.9% was first seen in the 5-9 age group and the rate gradually increased up to 75.0% in the 50-59 age group. By sex, the rate was higher in the male than in the female in the 20-29 age group and over. 4) In the natural transition of the prevalence rate by age, the reduction rate of the infection during the past 16 years was greater in the younger age groups up to the 40-49 age group and reached the same level in the age group 50-59. Reduction was seen again in the age group over 60s. By sex, the reduction rate was greater in the female than in the male in the 20-29 age group and over. By area, the reduction rate was greater in the riverside delta area than in the inland area, particularly in the young age groups. 5) In the intensity of the infection among the cases, the mean egg out-put per mg feces per infected cases(EPmg) in the inhabitants was 6.3. EPmg of those of the river-side-delta area was 15.4 and that of the in-land was 2.8. On the other hand, in the schoolchildren, EPmg was 3.2, and no difference was seen between the two areas, the river-side-delta area and the inland area. 6) In the transition of the intensity of the infection by area, EPmg among the inhabitants inexplically increased from 7.8 in 1967 to 15.4 in 1983. This was probably caused by uneven specimen collection in the process of sampling the population. EPmg of the inhabitants in the inland area and those of the schoolchildren of both riverside delta and inland areas showed a similar decrease in the past 16 years. 7) The intensity of the infection by age showed a relatively low level in the 20-29 age group and below, and EPmg 5.1-9.5 was seen in the 30-39 age group and over. Sex, Epmg was 5.8 in the male and 4.7 the female. By in 8) In the transition of the intensity of the infection, EPmg decreased from 6.2 in 1967 to 5.4 in 1983. By age, in contrast to the figures of 1967 in which EPmg gradually increased with some fluctuation from 1.1 in the 0-4 age group to peak 10.5 in the 50-59 age group, in 1983 lower intensity of the infection was seen in the age group from 10-14 to 20-29 with the EPmg range of 0.6-2.7. 9) In the distribution of the clonorchiasis cases by the range of EPmg value, 43.2% of the cases were in 0.1 0.9 and 34.6% in 1.0-4.9. As a whole by cumulative percent, 44.6% of them were under 0.9 as light infection and 86.1% of them under 9.9 up to moderate infection. By sex, no difference was seen in Epmg. 10) In the transition of the distribution by the range of Epmg, the cases were distributed up to the range 80.0-99.9 in 1967 and to 60.0-79.9 in 1983. By cumulative percent, in the range of 0.1-0.9 and less, light infection, 34.3% of them were distributed in 1967 and 44.6% in 1983 with about 10% increase. In the range of 5.0-9.9 and less, up to moderate infection, 83.2% in 1967 and 86.1% in 1983 of the cases were seen, respectively. 11) The practice of raw freshwater fish consumption among the inhabitants seems to have decreased in recent years. Those who admitted to raw freshwater fish consumption in the last two years among the infected inhabitants were 59.3%, although 86.8% of them professed to have experience with raw freshwater fish consumption. 31.7% of those who have had experience of the raw freshwater fish consumption denied any further consumption in recent years. From an interview of 543 school-children, 24.1% of them admitted to an experience of raw freshwater fish consumption. However, those who have practised in the past two years comprized 17.9%. Those who denied raw freshwater fish consumption in recent years among those who had such experience were 26.0% out of 131 interviewed. The rate of raw freshwater fish consumption in both inhabitants and schoolchildren were higher in the male than in the female. On the contrary, the rate of those who did not practise in recent years among those who had experience of raw freshwater fish consumption was higher in the female than in the male. 12) The major reason for the reduction of raw freshwater fish consumption among the local inhabitants was the risk of the fluke infection. However, it has become apparent that such change of taste has resulted from water pollution impact which has affected throughout the areas of the freshwater systems in this locality since last several years. 13) In animal survey, Clonorchis infection was seen in 14.8% of 88 dogs examined and 3.7% of 27 house rats examined. It was noted that populations of dogs and cats have increased in the villages surveyed. Although the prevalence rate was lower in the present survey than those of 1967, the significance of the animals as the reservoir host has not changed. 14) Prevalence rate of Clonorchis infection by cercariae in the first intermediate host, Parafossarulus manchouricus, was 0.6% out of 517 snails examined. The infection rate was lower in comparison with 2.3% out of 2,124 examined in 1967. Moreover, sharp decreases in number and distribution of the intermediate host snails in many watershed areas of the huge freshwater systems in this locality seemed to reduce transmission of Clonorchis in connection with the intermediate host stage of its life cycle. 15) Clonorchis infection in the second intermediate fish hosts was relatively low. The mean number of Clonorchis metacercaria per fish in Pseudorasbora parva was 517 in 1983, whereas it was 1943 in 1968 through 1969. Environmental water pollution has also caused the decreased fish population density in these areas, and this has also apparently affected to the practice of raw freshwater fish consumption among the local inhabitants. 16) In conclusion, endemicity of Clonorchis infection in Gimhae Gum and delta area of the Nagdong River has sharply decreased during the past 16 years. The major cause of the regressive transition of the infection was the water pollution of the land water systems of this locality. The pollution has upset the ecosystems comprizing of the intermediate hosts of Clonorchis in many areas, and also affected to a significant extent to the discontinuance of the local inhabitants for raw freshwater fish consumption.
