Mobile Client-Server System for Real-time Continuous Query of Moving Objects

  • In this paper, a Mobile Continuous Query Processing System (MCQPS) is designed to solve problems related to database hoarding, maintenance of shared data consistency, and optimization of logging. These problems are caused by weak connectivity and disconnection of wireless networks inherent in mobile database systems under mobile client-server environments. We show the superiority of the proposed MCQPS by comparing its performance to the Client-Intercept-Server (C-I-S) model. In addition, several experimental results show the effectiveness of our proposed indexing structure and methodology for real-time continuous queries.

Estimation of Carrying Capacity by Food Availability for Farming Oysters in Goseong Bay, Korea (먹이가용성에 의한 고성만의 굴 양식장 수용력)

  • For the continuous stable production of oyster, estimation of food availability (F) was carried out in Goseong Bay, south of coast Korea. Primary productivity ranged from 0.07 to $0.44gC/m^2/day$ (average $0.25gC/m^2/day$), lowest in July and highest in January. The distribution of primary productivity at Goseong Bay showed the pattern of "high in the south and low in the north." Food availability (F) was $F{\leq}0$, indicating insufficient food supply, from August to November and F > 0 from January to April. Continuous insufficient food supply was observed at 18 oyster farms in the southern part of the bay and 4 in its northern part. Mortality at the oyster farms was 56% on the average, and around 58% of death occurred during November when food supply was insufficient. The optimal population of cultured oyster per unit flow area was calculated to be $110-115indiv./m^2$ (198-201 indiv./string). When the sea area was divided into 3 regions (A, B, C) according to carrying capacity, the carrying capacity of (A) regions was $52-53indiv./m^2$ (93-95 indiv./string), (B) regions was $142-144indiv./m^2$ (255-259 indiv./string), and (C) regions was $198-202indiv./m^2$ (356-363 indiv./string). In particular, (A) regions showed extremely low productivity. For continuous stable oyster farming at Goseong Bay, it is necessary to control point and non-point source pollution through continuous environmental monitoring and to adjust harvest according to the base carrying capacity during the season of high water temperature.

Characterization of Continuous Cast Cu-Ni-Si Alloys (연속주조된 Cu-Ni-Si계 합금의 특성평가)

  • In this study, Cu-2.5at.%Ni-1at.%Si alloys were fabricated by horizontal continuous casting system to improve the electrical conductivity and mechanical properties of Cu-Ni-Si alloy. Withdrawing speed was changed with 50, 100, 150 and 200 mm/min for the optimum manufacturing condition. Microstructure was observed using OM, FE-SEM and TEM. Electrical conductivity was measured by 4-point probe method and mechanical properties were tested. A horizontal continuous cast thin slab had sound macro and micro structures with partly crystallized structures. Electrical resistivity decreased with increasing annealing temperature from 250 to $850^{\circ}C$, with increasing annealing temperature The maximum hardness and tensile strength were Hv 130, 610 MPa at $550^{\circ}C$, respectively. With changing withdrawing speed from 50 to 150 mm/min, hardness, tensile strength, yield strength and elongation were Hv 60-65, 210-230 MPa, 65-75 MPa and 40-50%, respectively.

Continuous Ethanol Production Using immobilized Baker's Yeast (고정화 효모를 이용한 연속적 에탄올 생산)

  • - Ethanol production by calcium alginate-immobilized baker's yeast was studied in the continuous shaked-flask reactor (CSFR) using glucose medium as a feed. Immobilized cells were stable at 30~$37^{\circ}C$ and pH 4~8. Fermentation characteristics of immobilized baker's yeast were examined changing the initial glucose concentration employed were 50, 100 and 150 g/l, respectively. It was investigated that the influent glucose concentration and the dilution rate have an influence on the ethanol fermentation characteristics at steady state in continuous culture of immobilized baker's yeast. The optimum conditions for high ethanol productivity and low residual glucose output in ethanol prodution were shown to be 0.2 h ' for the dilution rate and 150 g/l for the influent glucose concentration. The maximum ethanol productivity, ethanol yield, specific growth rate and glucose conversion rate were around 7.12 g/$l\cdot h$, 0.23, 0.366 g/$l\cdot h$ and 78.43, respectively.

CONTINUOUS DIGIT RECOGNITION FOR A REAL-TIME VOICE DIALING SYSTEM USING DISCRETE HIDDEN MARKOV MODELS

  • This paper introduces a interword modeling and a Viterbi search method for continuous speech recognition. We also describe a development of a real-time voice dialing system which can recognize around one hundred words and continuous digits in speaker independent mode. For continuous digit recognition, between-word units have been proposed to provide a more precise representation of word junctures. The best path in HMM is found by the Viterbi search algorithm, from which digit sequences are recognized. The simulation results show that a interword modeling using the context-dependent between-word units provide better recognition rates than a pause modeling using the context-independent pause unit. The voice dialing system is implemented on a DSP board with a telephone interface plugged in an IBM PC AT/486.

Phase Changes of Calcium Carbonate by Temperature and RPM in Continuous Crystallizer (연속식 결정화기에서 온도와 교반속도에 의한 탄산칼슘 결정의 형상변화)

  • Calcium carbonate involves three phases such as calcite, vaterite, and aragonite. Calcite and aragonite were more thermodynamically stable than vaterite. The synthesis of aragonite crystals by the reaction with sodium carbonate and calcium chloride solutions was investigated focusing on the effect of temperature and rpm in continuous crystallizer. In the batch crystallization test, calcite was synthesized by a relatively low temperature (under $40^{\circ}C$), but aragonite was formed at high temperature. In the continuous process with 100 rpm, no aragonite was found regardless of reaction temperature. But as increasing the stirring rate to 300 rpm and 500 rpm, the ratio of aragonite to calcite increased as increasing the temperature.

  • Composting by negative aeration is a reasonable proposition to control odor generated during composting process. Cattle manure and rice hulls mixtures were composted in a bin composting system by negative aeration. Continuous(CA) and intermittent(IA) aeration methods were applied to analyze the composting characteristics. The composting temperature and the ammonia emission during composting were investigated according to the aeration methods. The main problem for the negative aeration was the generation of condensate in the suction line of blower. The quantity of condensate was significant for continuous aeration. The aeration method should be modified to escape from the cooling effect of continuous aeration at the initial stage of composting. It took a longer time to finish a composting for intermittent aeration on account of lower aeration. It was concluded that the composting by negative aeration could be accomplished by either continuous or intermittent aeration method if the flow rate would be controlled more efficiently and the water vapor in suction line of blower could be removed effectively. Ammonia emission increased up to maximum value of 675ppm for continuous aeration while 300ppm for intermittent aeration. However, the cumulative value of ammonia emission was larger for intermittent aeration than for continuous aeration.

Effect of Heating Conditions on Apparent Viscosity of Cowpea Sediment Dispersions (가열조건에 따른 동부 앙금 호화액의 겉보기 점도)

  • Effects of concentration(6-9%, db) , heating temperature (80-95$^{\circ}C$), cooking time (10-50min) and heating method (continuous and instantaneous) on the apparent viscosity of cowpea sediment dispersions at 6$0^{\circ}C$ were investigated. The instantaneous heating resulted in higher apparent viscosity than continuous heating regardless concentrations and heating temperatures. The activation energy of the increase rate constant of the apparent viscosity was about 8 kcal/mole. The apparent viscosity of the cowpea sediment dispersion heated to 95$^{\circ}C$ and held for 20 min showed a linear relation with the 20 min height at 92.5$^{\circ}C$ by viscoamylograph.
