The use of a silicon carbide (SiC)-based composite ceramic layer for the mold of a curved cover glass was demonstrated. The stress of SiC/VDR/graphite-based mold structure was evaluated via finite element analysis. The results revealed that the maximum tensile stress primarly occured at the edge region. Moreover, the stress can be reduced by employing a relatively thick SiC coating layer and, therefore, layers of various thicknesses were deposited by means of chemical vapor deposition. During growth of the layer, the orientation of the facets comprising the SiC grain became dominant with additional intense SiC(220) and SiC(004). However, the roughness of the SiC layer increased with increasing thickness of the layer and. Hence, the thickness of the SiC layer needs to be adjusted by values lower than the tolerance band of the curved cover glass mold.
Due to the inherently poor adhesion strength of Cu-based leadframe/EMC (Epoxy Molding Compound) interface, popcorn cracking of thin plastic packages frequently occurs during the solder reflow process. In the present work, in order to enhance the adhesion strength of Cu-based leadframe/EMC interface, black-oxide layer was formed on the leadframe surface by chemical oxidation of leadframe, and then oxidized leadframe sheets were molded with EMC and machined to form SDCB (Sandwiched Double-Cantilever Beam) and SBN (Sandwiched Brazil-Nut) specimens. SDCB and SBN specimens were designed to measure the adhesion strength between leadframe and EMC in terms of critical energy-release rate under quasi-Mode I ($G_{IC}$ ) and mixed Mode loading ($G_{C}$ /) conditions, respectively. Results showed that black-oxide treatment of Cu-based leadframe initially introduced pebble-like X$C_2$O crystals with smooth facets on its surface, and after the full growth of $Cu_2$O layer, acicular CuO crystals were formed atop of the $Cu_2$O layer. According to the result of SDCB test, $Cu_2$O crystals on the leadframe surface did not increase ($G_{IC}$), however, acicular CuO crystals on the $Cu_2$O layer enhanced $G_{IC}$ considerably. The main reason for the adhesion improvement seems to be associated with the adhesion of CuO to EMC by mechanical interlocking mechanism. On the other hand, as the Mode II component increased, $G_{C}$ was increased, and when the phase angle was -34$^{\circ}$, crack Kinking into EMC was occured.d.
A novel surface plasmon resonance(SPR) multisensing method, which does not require imaging apparatus such as CCD, has been proposed and implemented experimentally. The proposed method is based on the multichannel SPR and the separation of signals by use of additional layers whose thickness is controlled. SPR signals are influenced by the thickness of sensing layer as well as the optical condition of sensing surface. As the SPR signals from different ligands are usually positioned closely, the reflected light from sensing surface does not provide us with the clear differences of resonance signal depending on the kinds of ligands. It was found from our experiments that SPR signals from each ligand that is located on the additional layer with different thickness can be separated clearly enough to identify various signals from different ligands. Proposed method with theoretical design and simulation has been verified experimentally by using $SiO_2$ thin film layer as additional layer.
TiAl-based intermetallic compounds were electro-bornizel in the mixture of $Na_2B_4O_7$, KCL and LiCl in the termetature rage between 850 and $1000^{\circ}C$for various times (1-5 hours)under the fixed current density of 0.5 A/$cm^2$. The optimized composition of electrolyte in this work was decided to be 76.9 wt% $Na_2B_4O_7$-19.2 wt.%(0.7KCl-0.3LiCl) -3.9 wt.% al. The samples with boronized layer were investigated by SEM, XRD and EDS. The surface micro-hardness of boronized TiAl was also evaluated using Micro Vickers Hardness Tester. The sample, boronized at $900^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours in the above composition of electrolyte under the current density of 0.5 A/$\textrm{cm}^2$, has about 36$\mu\textrm{m}$ think layer on the surface, and its surface micro-hardness was measured to be 1263 Hv. From the results of SEM, XRD and EDS, the layer consisted of $TiB_2$ sublayer and Al-oxide sub layer. Al-depleted layer below the Al-oxide sudlayer was also detected. The activation energy for formation of boronized layer in this study was calculated as 178 Kcal/moleK.
The effects of high-temperature process required to fabricate the SiC devices on the surface morphology and the electrical characteristics were investigated for 4H-SiC Schottky diodes. The 4H-SiC diodes without a graphite cap layer as a protection layer showed catastrophic increase in an excess current at a forward bias and a leakage current at a reverse bias after high-temperature annealing process. Moreover it seemed to deviate from the conventional Schottky characteristics and to operate as an ohmic contact at the low bias regime. However, the 4H-SiC diodes with the graphite cap still exhibited their good electrical characteristics in spite of a slight increase in the leakage current. Therefore, we found that the graphite cap layer serves well as the protection layer of silicon carbide surface during high-temperature annealing. Based on a closer analysis on electric characteristics, a conductive surface transfiguration layer was suspected to form on the surface of diodes without the graphite cap layer during high-temperature annealing. After removing the surface transfiguration layer using ICP-RIE, Schottky diode without the graphite cap layer and having poor electrical characteristics showed a dramatic improvement in its characteristics including the ideality factor[${\eta}$] of 1.23, the schottky barrier height[${\Phi}$] of 1.39 eV, and the leakage current of $7.75\{times}10^{-8}\;A/cm^{2}$ at the reverse bias of -10 V.
In this work, we prepared activated multi-walled carbon nanotubes/polyacrylonitrile (A-MWCNTs/C) composites by film casting and activation method. Electrochemical properties of the composites were investigated in terms of serving as MWCNTs-based electrode materials for electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs). As a result, the A-MWCNTs/C composites had much higher BET specific surface area, and pore volume, and lower volume ratio of micropores than those of pristine MWCNTs/PAN ones. Furthermore, some functional groups were added on the surface of the A-MWCNTs/C composites. The specific capacitance of the A-MWCNTs/C composites was more than 4.5 times that of the pristine ones at 0.1 V discharging voltage owing to the changes of the structure and surface characteristics of the MWCNTs by activation process.
An immunosensor based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) with a self-assembled protein G layer was developed for the detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7. A self-assembled protein C layer on a gold (Au) surface was fabricated by adsorbing the mixture of 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA) and hexanethiol at various molar ratios and by activating chemical binding between free amine (-$NH_2$) of protein G and 11-(MUA) using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDAC) in series. The formation of a self-assembled protein G layer on an Au substrate and the binding of the antibody and antigen in series were confirmed by SPR spectroscopy. The surface morphology analyses of the self-assembled protein G layer on the Au substrate, monoclonal antibody (Mab) against E. coli O157:H7 which was immobilized on protein G, and bound E. coli O157:H7 extracts on Immobilized Mab against E. coii O157:H7 were performed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The detection limit of the SPR-based immunosensor for E. coli O157:H7 was found to be about $10^4$ cells/ml.
The epitaxial graphene on the 4H- or 6H-SiC(0001) surface has been intensively studied due to the possibility of wafer-scale growt. However the existence of interface layer (zero layer graphene) and its influence on the upper graphene layer have been considered as one of the main obstarcles for the industrial application. Among various methods tried to overcome the strong interaction with the substrate through the interface layer, it has been proved that the hydrogen intercalation successfully passivate the Si dangling bond of the substrate and can produce the quasi-free standing epitaxial graphene (QFEG) layers on the siC(0001) surface. In this study, we report the results of the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and Raman spectroscopy for the QFEG layers produced by ex-situ and in-situ hydrogen intercalation. From the ARPES measurement, we confirmed that the Dirac points of QFEG layers exactly coincide with the Fermi level. The band structure of QFEG layer are sustainable upon thermal heating up to 1100 K and robust against the deposition of several metals andmolecular deposition. We also investigated the strain of the QFEG layers by using Raman spectroscopy measurement. From the change of the 2D peak position of graphene Raman spectrum, we found out that unlike the strong compressive strain in the normal epitaxial graphene on the SiC(0001) surface, the strain of the QFEG layer are significantly released and almost similar to that of the mechanically exfoliated graphene on the silicon oxide substrate. These results indicated that various ideas proposed for the ideal free-standing graphene can be tested based on the QFEG graphene layers grown on the SiC(0001) surface.
In the present work, an attempt has been made to construct branching surface from 2-D contours, which are given at different layers and may have branches. If a layer having more than one contour and corresponds to contour at adjacent layers, then it is termed as branching problem and approximated by adding additional points in between the layers. Firstly, the branching problem is converted to single contour case in which there is no branching at any layer and the final branching surface is obtained by skinning. Contours are constructed from the given input points at different layers by energy-based B-Spline approximation. 3-D curves are constructed after adding additional points into the contour points for all the layers having branching problem by using energy-based B-Spline formulation. Final 3-D surface is obtained by skinning 3-D curves and 2-D contours. There are three types of branching problems: (a) One-to-one, (b) One-to-many and (c) Many-to-many. Oneto-one problem has been done by plethora of researchers based on minimizations of twist and curvature and different tiling techniques. One-to-many problem is the one in which at least one plane must have more than one contour and have correspondence with the contour at adjacent layers. Many-to-many problem is stated as m contours at i-th layer and n contours at (i+1)th layer. This problem can be solved by combining one-to-many branching methodology. Branching problem is very important in CAD, medical imaging and geographical information system(GIS).

In this paper, we have studied minimization of the kerf-width and surface burning, which occurred after the conventional singulation process of the multi-layer BGA board with copper, polyethylene and epoxy glass fiber. The high thermal energy of a pulsed Nd:YAG laser is used to cut the multi-layer board. The most considerable matter in the laser cutting of the multi-layer BGA boards is their different absorption coefficient to the laser beam and their different heat conductivity. The cut mechanism of a multi-layer BGA board using a 2$^{nd}$ harmonic Nd:YAG laser is the thermal vaporization by high temperature rise based on the Gaussian profile and copper melting point. In this experiment, we found that the sacrifice layer and Na blowing are effective in minimizing the surface burning by the reaction between oxygen in the air and the laser beam. In addition, N2 blowing reduces laser energy loss by debris and suppresses surface oxidation. Also, the beam incidence on the epoxy layer compared to polyimide was much more suitable to reduce damage to polyimide with copper wire for the multi layer BGA singulation. When the polyester double-sided tape is used as a sacrifice layer, surface carbonization becomes less. The SEM, non-contact 3D inspector and high-resolution microscope are used to measure cut line-width and surface morphology.
