  • Carbon/carbon composites are ideal candidates for a number of aerospace applications including structural materials for advanced vehicles, leading edges, structures of re-entry and hypersonic vehicles and propulsion systems. One serious defect for such application of the carbon/carbon composites is their poor oxidation resistance in high temperature oxidizing environments. SiC coating was employed to protect the composites from oxidation. It is mechanically and chemically stable under extreme thermal and oxidative environments, provides good adhesion to the substrate, and offers good thermal shock resistance. The SiC layer on the nozzle machined from the carbon/carbon composites was formed by pack-cementation method. Then, erosion characteristic of SiC coated carbon/carbon nozzle was examined by combustion test using a liquid rocket motor. The erosion rates were measured as function of combustion pressure, ratio of oxygen to fuel, combustion time, density of the composites and geometry of reinforced carbon fibre in the composites. The morphology change of the composites after combustion test was investigated using SEM and erosion mechanism also was discussed.

  • Unidirectional carbon/carbon (C/C) composites were manufactured using phenolic resins as a precursor of the carbonized matrix throughout a one-step manufacturing process. Also, molybdenum oxide ($MoO_3$) and binder pitches were impregnated with phenolic resins to improve the bulk density and mechanical property of the C/C composites. In this study, the influence of $MoO_3$ and binder pitches on mechanical properties of the C/C composites were investigated by measuring flexural strength (${\sigma}_f$) and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS). The results show that the enhancement of interfacial adhesions between the fibers and matrix resins of the C/C composites with $MoO_3$ and binder pitches which led to the improvement of mechanical properties of the C/C composites. This indicates that the presence of $MoO_3$ and binder pitches in C/C composites can develop the graphite structure and increase the bulk density.

  • C/SiC composites were prepared by boron nitride (BN)-assisted liquid silicon infiltration (LSI), and their anti-oxidation and mechanical properties were investigated. The microstructures, bulk densities, and porosities of the C/SiC composites demonstrated that the infiltration of liquid silicon into the composites improved them, because the layered-structure BN worked as a lubricant. Increasing the amount of BN improved the anti-oxidation of the prepared C/SiC composites. This synergistic effect was induced by the assistance of BN in the LSI. More thermally stable SiC was formed in the composite, and fewer pores were formed in the composite, which reduced inward oxygen diffusion. The mechanical strength of the composite increased up to the addition of 3% BN and decreased thereafter due to increased brittleness from the presence of more SiC in the composite. Based on the anti-oxidation and mechanical properties of the prepared composites, we concluded that improved anti-oxidation of C/SiC composites can be achieved through BN-assisted LSI, although there may be some degradation of the mechanical properties. The desired anti-oxidation and mechanical properties of the composite can be achieved by optimizing the BN-assisted LSI conditions.

  • The composites were fabricated, respectively, using 61vol.% SiC - 39vol.% $TiB_2$ and using 61vol.% SiC 39vol.% WC powders with the liquid forming additives of 12wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ by pressureless annealing at 1800$^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. Reactions between SiC and transition metal $TiB_2$, WC were not observed in this microstructure. The result of phase analysis of composites by XRD revealed SiC(6H), $TiB_2$ and YAG($Al_5Y_3O_{12}$) crystal phase on the SiC-$TiB_2$, and SiC(2H), WC and YAG($Al_5Y_3O_{12}$) crystal phase on the SiC-WC composites. ${\beta}{\rightarrow}{\alpha}$-SiC phase transformation was ocurred on the SiC-$TiB_2$, but ${\alpha}{\rightarrow}{\beta}$-SiC reverse transformation was not occurred on the SiC-WC composites. The relative density, the flexural strength showed respectively value of 96.2%, 310.19Mpa in SiC-WC composites. The electrical resistivity of the SiC-$TiB_2$ and the SiC-WC composites is all positive temperature cofficient resistance(PTCR) in the temperature ranges from 25$^{\circ}C$ to 500$^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, densified 4D carbon/carbon composites were made from carbon fiber and coal tar pitch through the process of pressure impregnation and carbonization and then followed by carbonization and graphitization. To improve the oxidative resistance of the prepared carbon/carbon composites, the surface of carbon/carbon composites was coated on SiC by the pack cementation method. The SiC coated layer was created by depending on the constitution of pack powder, and reaction time of pack-cementation. The morpology of crystalline and texture of these SiC coated carbon/carbon composites were investigated by XRD, SEM/EDS observation. So the coating mechanism of pack-cementation process was proposed. The oxidative res istance were observed through the air oxidation test, and then the optimal condition of pack cementation was found by them. Besides, the oxidative mechanism of SiC formed was proposed through the observation of SiC coated surface, which was undergone by oxidation test.

  • Aluminum alloy matrix composites reinforced with various amounts of SiC particles have been produced by rheo-compocasting followed by hot extrusion. A relatively uniform distribution of SiC particles in the composites was obtained. The amounts of pore and SiC particles cluster were relatively small in the composites. Particle free zones were observed in the hot extruded composites when the amount of SiC particles was less than 20 vol%. However, the width of particle free zone decreases with the increase of SiC particle content. Eutectic Si phase play an important role for improving bonding between SiC particle and matrix. Tensile and yield strength increased with the increase of SiC particle content. the strenthening effect of SiC particle addition was effective even at relatively high temperature of 573 K.

  • The composites were fabricated by adding 0, 15, 30, 45[vol.%] $ZrB_2$ powders as a second phase to SiC matrix. The physical, mechanical and electrical properties of electroconductive SiC ceramic composites by spark plasma sintering(SPS) were investigated. Reactions between ${\beta}$-SiC and $ZrB_2$ were not observed in the XRD and the phase analysis of the electroconductive SiC ceramic composites. The relative density of mono ${\beta}$-SiC, ${\beta}$-SiC+15[vol.%]$ZrB_2$, ${\beta}$-SiC+30[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ and ${\beta}$-SiC+45[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ composites are respectively 99.24[%], 87.53[%], 96.41[%] and 98.11[%] Phase analysis of the electroconductive SiC ceramic composites by XRD revealed mostly of ${\beta}$-SiC, $ZrB_2$ and weakly of $ZrO_2$ phase. The flexural strength showed the lowest of 114.44[MPa] for ${\beta}$-SiC+15[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ powders and showed the highest of 210.75[MPa] for composite no added with $ZrB_2$ powders at room temperature. The trend of the mechanical properties of the electroconductive SiC ceramic composites is accorded with the trend of the relative density. The electrical resistivity of the electroconductive SiC ceramic composites decreased with increased $ZrB_2$ contents. The electrical resistivity of mono ${\beta}$-SiC, ${\beta}$-SiC+15[vol.%]$ZrB_2$, ${\beta}$-SiC+30[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ and ${\beta}$-SiC+45[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ composites are respectively $4.57{\times}10^{-1},\;2.13{\times}10^{-1},\;2.68{\times}10^{-2}\;and\;1.99{\times}10^{-2}[{\Omega}{\cdot}cm]$ at room temperature. The electrical resistivity of mono ${\beta}$-SiC and ${\beta}$-SiC+15[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ are negative temperature coefficient resistance(NTCR) in temperature ranges from $25[^{\circ}C]\;to\; 100[^{\circ}C]$. The electrical resistivity of ${\beta}$-SiC+30[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ and ${\beta}$-SiC+45[vol.%]ZrB_2$ are positive temperature coefficient resistance(PTCR) in temperature ranges from $25[^{\circ}C]\;to\;100[^{\circ}C]$. It is convinced that ${\beta}$-SiC+30[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ composites by SPS for heater or ignitors can be applied.

  • Cu-30 vol% SiC composites with relatively densified microstructure and a sound interface between the Cu and SiC phases were obtained by pressureless sintering of PCS-coated SiC and Cu powders. The coated SiC powders were prepared by thermal curing and pyrolysis of PCS. Thermal curing at $200^{\circ}C$ was performed to fabricate infusible materials prior to pyrolysis. The cured powders were heated treated up to $1600^{\circ}C$ for the pyrolysis process and for the formation of SiC crystals on the surface of the SiC powders. XRD analysis revealed that the main peaks corresponded to the ${\alpha}$-SiC phase; peaks for ${\beta}$-SiC were newly appeared. The formation of ${\beta}$-SiC is explained by the transformation of thermally-cured PCS on the surface of the initial ${\alpha}$-SiC powders. Using powder mixtures of coated SiC powder, hydrogen-reduced Cu-nitrate, and elemental Cu powders, Cu-SiC composites were fabricated by pressureless sintering at $1000^{\circ}C$. Microstructural observation for the sintered composites showed that the powder mixture of PCS-coated SiC and Cu exhibited a relatively dense and homogeneous microstructure. Conversely, large pores and separated interfaces between Cu and SiC were observed in the sintered composite using uncoated SiC powders. These results suggest that Cu-SiC composites with sound microstructure can be prepared using a PCS coated SiC powder mixture.

  • In present work, the antimicrobial effect of silver-nanoparticles/celite (SN/C) and silver carbonate/celite (SC/C) composites on Escherichia coli (E. coli) by use of silver nanoparticles and silver carbonate has been studied. Characteristics of the SN/C and SC/C composites were identified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). SN/C and SC/C composites showed antimicrobial activity and the minimum inhibitory concentration of E. coli were 0.541, 0.344 ppm and the complete sterilizing concentration for the test organism were 1.427, 1.623 ppm. From the results we identified that SN/C and SC/C composites have antimicrobial activity to E. coli.

  • $SiC_f$/SiC composites were prepared using the hybrid process of chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) and polymer impregnation and pyrolysis (PIP). Before the application of PIP, partially matrix-filled preform composites with different densities were fabricated by control of chemical vapor infiltration time and temperature. The changes of the final density of the $SiC_f$/SiC composites had a tendency similar to that of preform composites partially filled by CVI. Composites with lower density after the CVI process had a larger increment of density during the PIP process. Three types of microstructures were observed on the fractured surface of the composite: 1) well pulled-out fibers and lower density, 2) slightly pulled-out fibers and higher density, and 3) only bulk SiC. The different fractions and distributions of the microstructures could have an effect on the mechanical properties of the composites. In this study, $SiC_f$/SiC composites prepared using a hybrid process of CVI and PIP had density values in the range of $1.05{\sim}1.44g/cm^3$, tensile strength values in the range of 76.4 ~ 130.7 MPa, and fracture toughness values in the range of $11.2{\sim}13.5MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$.
