The dense sintered bodies of Si/SiC composite with various Si contents could be fabricated by changing the green density in the forming process. The Si/SiC/graphite composites with various graphite contents could be also fabricated by changing a graphite content in the starting composition. Their mechanical and tribological properties were characterized and wear mechanism was also studided. The hardness and strength of the Si/SiC and the Si/SiC/graphite were decreased with increasing the contents of free Si and graphite, respectively. However, the friction coefficient and specific wear rate had no specific relations to their hardness and strength. Adhesion of free Si was a main factor to determine a wear resistance of the Si/SiC composite. In the case of the Si/SiC/graphite, solid lubricationl and liquid reservoir of the graphite particles played the main role of the reduction of the friction force. In the torque test to estimate the possibility of practical of practical applications, the value of torque between the Al2O3 disk and Si/SiC/graphite disk was 1/6 lower compared with two $Al_2O_3$ disks on the basis of 100,000 cycles.
$Al-SiC_{p}$ composite layer was prepared by plasma thermal spray on aluminum substrate. The homogeneously dispersed composite powder for thermal spray was fabricated by mechanical alloying with ball mill. The friction tests of the composite layers and commercial aluminum alloys for comparison were performed in the temperature range of 20∼$260^{\circ}C$ with the interval of $40^{\circ}C$ with steel counter-face. Friction coefficient was recorded during test sequence, and the microstructure of surface and debris was investigated by optical and scanning electron microscope. Friction coefficients of composite and aluminum alloys at room temperature were similar except pure aluminum. As the temperature increase, friction coefficient was increased rapidly in AC4C, AC2A. But friction coefficient of $Al-SiC_{p}$ composite was not increased so much up to $220^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the reinforcement of $SiC_{p}$ into aluminum matrix increased the stability of friction coefficient as well as wear resistance.

Ni-P-SiC composite coating layers were prepared by electroless plating method and their deposition rate, codeposition of SiC, morphology, surface roughness, hardness, wear and friction properties were investigated. The deposition rate was kept almost constant independent of the concentration of SiC in the plating solution and the codeposition of SiC in the composite coating layer increased with increased concentration of SiC in the plating solution except the early stage. Vickers microhardness increased with respect to the increased codeposition of SiC and the heat treatment at $300^{\circ}C$ in air for 1 hour. It was found that the wear volume decreased with increased up to 50 wt.% of SiC codeposition, and that friction coefficient increased gradually with increased codeposition of SiC. Considering the wear and the friction behaviors, the composite coating layer obtained by using 50 wt.% of SiC codeposition is desirable for the practical application for anti-wear and anti-friction coatings.
SiC and $SiC-Si_3N_4$ powder were synthesized via the carbiding and carbiding-nitriding reaction of Jecheon quartz respectively using graphite as a reducing agent. $\beta$-SiC+($\alpha$+$\beta$)-$Si_3N_4$ composite was obtained by the carbiding-nitriding reaction of Jecheon quartz-graphite mixture at 1, 35$0^{\circ}C$ in $H_2$ atmosphere. $\beta$-SiC+($\alpha$+$\beta$)-$Si_3N_4$ composite was obtained by the carbidint-nitriding reaction of Jecheon quartz-graphite mixture at 1, 35$0^{\circ}C$ in $N_2-H_2$ atmosphere. The ratio of $\beta$-SiC+($\alpha$+$\beta$)-$Si_3N_4$ content in a produced composite could be controlled by adjusting the reaction time and gaseous mixture.

Applicability of SiC coating through CVD process and PCS(polycarbosilane) impregnation for the oxidation resistance and mechanical properties of C/C composite was studied. The SiC layer coated by CVD was deposited uniformly on the C/C composite, whereas the SiC converted from PCS impregnation wetted around individual carbon fiber. The PCS-impregnated C/C composite exhibited a significant increase of bending strength in comparison with as received C/C composite. This increase in the mechanical property could be attributed to the high bonding strength between fibers due to an impregnated SiC phase. The PCS-impregnated C/C showed 25% improvement in density, 3.5 times higher MOR and 2.8 times higher oxidation resistance compared to the as-received C/C. The increments due to PCS impregnation were more effective than CVD process.
In this study, a monolithic MoSi2 matrix reinforced with 20 vol% SiC particles, a SiC/MoSi2 composite matrix reinforced with 20 vol% ZrO2 particles, and a ZrO2/MoSi2 composite were fabricated using hot press sintering at $1350^{\circ}C$ for 1 h under a pressure of 30 MPa. The Vickers hardness and sliding wear resistance of the monolithic MoSi2, ZrO2/MoSi2, and SiC/MoSi2 composite were investigated at room temperature. A wear behavior test was carried out using a disk-type wear tester with a silicon nitride ball. The ZrO2/MoSi2 composite showed an average Vickers hardness value and excellent wear resistance compared with the monolithic MoSi2 and SiC/MoSi2 composite at room temperature.
Hi-Nicalon SiC fiber reinforced SiC composites (SiC/SiC) have been fabricated by the reaction sintering process. Braided Hi-Nicalon SiC fiber with double interphases of BN and SiC was used in this composite system. The microstructures and the mechanical properties of reaction sintered SiC/SiC composites were investigated through means of electron microscopies (SEM, TEM, EDS) and bending tests. The matrix morphology of reaction sintered SiC/SiC composites was composed of the SiC phases that the composition of the silicon and the carbon is different. The TEM analysis showed that the residual silicon and the unreacted carbon were finely distributed in the matrix region of reaction sintered SiC/SiC composites. Reaction sintered SiC/SiC composites also represented proper flexural strength and fracture energy, accompanying the noncatastrophic failure behavior.
CVD-Si3N4/CVD-SiC/pack-SiC/pyro-carbon/(3-D C/C composite) multilayer coating was performed to improve the oxdiation resistance and erosion resistance properteis of the 3-D carbon/carbon composite, and the plasma test was performed to measure the oxidation resistance and erosion resistance properties. The thicknesses of each film layer were about 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ for pack-SiC, 5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ for CVD-SiC and 40${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ for CVD-Si3N4. When the multilayer coated specimen was exposed to the plasma flame with temperature of 500$0^{\circ}C$ for 20 seconds, it showed the weight loss five times less than that of the only pyro-carbon coated specimen.

The composites were fabricated, respectively, using 61[vol.%] SiC-39[vol.%] $TiB_2$ and using 61[vol.%] SiC-39[vol.%] $ZrB_2$ powders with the liquid forming additives of 12[wt%] $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ by hot pressing annealing at $1650[^{\circ}C]$ for 4 hours. Reactions between SiC and transition metal $TiB_2$, $ZrB_2$ were not observed in this microstructure. The result of phase analysis of composites by XRD revealed SiC(6H, 3C), $TiB_2$, $ZrB_2$ and $YAG(Al_5Y_3O_{12})$ crystal phase on the Liquid-Phase-Sintered(LPS) $SiC-TiB_2$, and $SiC-ZrB_2$ composite. $\beta\rightarrow\alpha-SiC$ phase transformation was occurred on the $SiC-TiB_2$ and $SiC-ZrB_2$ composite. The relative density, the flexural strength and Young's modulus showed the highest value of 98.57[%], 249.42[MPa] and 91.64[GPa] in $SiC-ZrB_2$ composite at room temperature respectively. The electrical resistivity showed the lowest value of $7.96{\times}10^{-4}[\Omega{\cdot}cm]$ for $SiC-ZrB_2$ composite at $25[^{\circ}C]$. The electrical resistivity of the $SiC-TiB_2$ and $SiC-ZrB_2$ composite was all positive temperature coefficient resistance (PTCR) in the temperature ranges from $25[^{\circ}C]$ to $700[^{\circ}C]$. The resistance temperature coefficient of composite showed the lowest value of $1.319\times10^{-3}/[^{\circ}C]$ for $SiC-ZrB_2$ composite in the temperature ranges from $100[^{\circ}C]$ to $300[^{\circ}C]$ Compositional design and optimization of processing parameters are key factors for controlling and improving the properties of SiC-based electroconductive ceramic composites.
Alumina coated SiC whiskers were prepared by homogeneous precipitation of aluminum sulfate. The Si3N4 composites reinforced with coated SiC whiskers were fabricated by hot-pressing at $1800^{\circ}C$ for 2 h under an $N_{2}$ atmosphere of 0.1 MPa to examine the effects of coated whiskers on the mechanical properties of SiC whisker reinforced $Si_{3}N_{4}$ composite. By the addition of alumina coated SiC whiskers instead of as received ones, the fracture toughness of composite was about 6.7 $MPam^{1/2}$ which was slightly lower than as received SiC whisker reinforced composite. This result seems to be caused by the fact that the crack deflection and whisker pull-out were decreased. Thus, alumina coated SiC whiskers were considered to form relatively strong interface bond with $Si_{3}N_{4}$ matrix.
