  • A compressive split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) technique is used to investigate the dynamic behavior of SM45C at high temperature. A radiant heater, which consists of one ellipsoidal reflector and one halogen lamp, is used to heat the specimen. Specimens are tested from $600^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$ at intervals of $100^{\circ}C$ at a strain-rate ranging from 1100/s to 1150/s. A critical phenomenon occurs between $700^{\circ}C$ and $750^{\circ}C$ in SM45C. This phenomenon results in the drastic drop in a flow stress. In a modified Johnson-Cook constitutive equation, a reducer function is used to take into account for the effect of the drastic drop in a flow stress. A reducer function, which is dependant on the temperature as well as the strain, is introduced and the parameters of the modified Johnson-Cook constitutive equation are determined from test results.

  • Thermal shock behavior of alumina ceramics were studied by quenching the heated alumina specimen into the water of various temperatures over 0~10$0^{\circ}C$. The critical thermal shock temperature difference ( Tc) of the specimen decreased almost linearly from 275$^{\circ}C$ to 20$0^{\circ}C$ with increase in the cooling water temperature over 0~6$0^{\circ}C$. It is probably due to the increase of the maximum cooling rate which is dependent of the convection heat transfer coefficient. The convection heat transfer coefficient is a function of the temperature of the cooling water. However, the critical thermal shock temperature difference( Tc) of the specimen increased at 25$0^{\circ}C$ over 80~10$0^{\circ}C$ due to the film boiling of the cooling water. The maximum cooling rate, which brings about the maximum thermal stress of the specimen in the cooling process, was observed to increase linearly with the increase in the quenching temperature difference of the specimen due to the linear relationship of the convection heat transfer coefficient with the water temperature over 0~6$0^{\circ}C$. The critical maximum cooling rate for thermal shock fracture was observed almost constant to be about 260$\pm$1$0^{\circ}C$/s for all water temperatures over 0~6$0^{\circ}C$. Therefore, thermal shock behavior of alumina ceramics is greatly influenced by the convection heat transfer coefficient of the cooling water.

  • Steel was exposed in an atmospheric environment, and atmospheric environmental factors that include chloride, humidity, SO2, NO2 etc. induced the corrosion of steel. Corrosivity categories classified by SO2 and chloride deposition rate were low, but those classified by TOW were high in the Korean Peninsula, and on these environmental categories, the corrosivity of atmospheres classified by corrosion rate in carbon steel was low medium, C2-C3, and medium, C3 for zinc, copper, and aluminum. This work performed the outdoor exposure test for 10 years at 14 areas in Korea and calculated the atmospheric corrosion rate of carbon steel. The atmospheric corrosion behavior of carbon steel is discussed based on the various corrosion factors. When the corrosion product forms on carbon steel by atmospheric corrosion, cracks may also be formed, and through these cracks, the environmental factors can penetrate into the interior of the product, detach some of the corrosion products and finally corrode locally. Thus, the maximum corrosion rate was about 7.3 times greater than the average corrosion rate. The color difference and glossiness of carbon steel by the 10 year-outdoor exposure tests are discussed based on the corrosion rate and the environmental factors.

  • The crystallization temperature of an amorphous silicon (a-Si) can be lowered down to 400.deg. C by a new method : Double-metal induced lateral crystallization (DMILC). The a-Si film was laterally crystallized from Ni and Pd deposited area, and its lateral crystallization rate reaches up to 0.2.mu.m/hour at that temperature and depends on the overlap length of Ni and Pd films; the shorter the overlap length, the faster the rate. Poly-Silicon thin film transistors (poly-Si TFT's) fabricated by DMILC at 400.deg. C show a field effect mobility of 38.5cm$^{3}$/Vs, a minimum leakage current of 1pA/.mu.m, and a slope of 1.4V/dec. The overlap length does not affect the characteristics of the poly-Si TFT's, but determines the lateral crystallization rate.

  • Based on the viscous flow characteristics of gas through capillary tube, a simple and low cost system was developed for controlling gas concentration for use in C.A experiments. The gas flow rate through capillary tube had a linear relationship with pressure, $(length)^{-1}$ and $(radius)^4$ of capillary tube, which agreed well with Hagen-Poiseuille's law. The developed system could control the gas concentration in storage chamber within ${\pm}0.3%$ deviation compared to the preset concentration. The required time for producing target gas concentration in storage chamber was exactly predicted by the model used in this study, and it required much longer time than the calculated time which divided the volume of chamber by flow rate. Therefore, for producing target gas concentration as quickly as possible, it needs to supply higher flow rate of gas during the initial stage of experiment when gas concentration in storage chamber has not reached at target value. It appeared that the developed system was very useful for C.A experiments. Because one could decide a desired flow rate by the prediction model, control flow rate freely and easily by changing pressure in the pressure-regulating chamber and the accuracy was high.

  • The aim of this study is to optimize the efficiency of a photobiorector on the growth rate of Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris) by varying distance of optical panel (OP). The round shaped C. vulgaris (FC-16) having the size of $3-8{\mu}m$ is employed in this study. The cells of C. vulgaris are cultured in the Jaworski's Medium with deionized water at $22^{\circ}C$ for 15 days. The OP is placed at four different distances i.e., at 225 mm distance (Run 1), 150 mm distance (Run 2), 112.5 mm distance (Run 3) and 90 mm distance (Run 4) having a LED (Light Emitting Diode) source. The diffuse rate is achieved to 86%, 90%, 92% and 94% for Run 1, Run 2 Run 3 and Run 4, respectively. A narrower distance of OP caused to effectively to increase the efficiency of diffuse light rate. For mass cultivation of this biomass, medium is changed according to distance of OP after attaining a maximum biomass concentration; Run 1 in 8 days, Run 2 in 6 days, Run 3 in 4 days and Run 4 in 3 days. In addition, the amount of maximum biomass rate for Run 4 was reached 3 times higher than that of Run1. However, growth rate, chlorophyll per cell, cell volume and doubling time are found to be Run 3 and Run 4 higher than that of Run 1 and Run 2 samples. However, Run 3 and Run 4 are having a slight difference in all these measurements. These findings suggest that in terms of economic consideration and efficiency towards simultaneous mass cultivation of biomass, Run 3 was found to be more effective than other samples.

  • Fatigue crack propagation rates and characteristics of the SA516-70 steel which is used for the low temperature pressure vessels, were studied in the room temperature of $10^{\circ}C$ and low temperature ranges of $-10^{\circ}C,\;-30^{\circ}C,\;-50^{\circ}C,\;and\;-70^{\circ}C$ with stress ratio of R=0.05. The obtained experimental results are as follows; 1) In the logarithmic relationship between the fatigue crack propagation rate(da/dN) and stress intensity factor K, the linear relationship was obtained up to da/dN > $8{\times}10^3$ mm/cycle in the same of room temperature, but in low temperature case, the relationship was extended to the range of low crack propagation rate. 2) The lower limit stress intensity factor of SA516-70 ${\Delta}K_{th}\;was\;23MPa\sqrt{m}$ and in the case of low temperature $-50^{\circ}C\;and\;-70^{\circ}C$, the crack propagation rate da/dN which showed a linear relation, reached rapidly to the ${\Delta}K_{th}$. As the results, the crack propagation rates of $-50^{\circ}C\;and\;-70^{\circ}C$ were lower than that of room temperature and according to the testing temperature the rates were decreased rapidly to the ${\Delta}K_{th}$. 3) On the relationship between the stress intensity factor ${\Delta}K$ and the track propagation cycle, the stress intensity factors of low cycle region was rapidly increased at low temperature, but ${\Delta}K$ was increased rapidly at room temperature of high cycle. 4) On the relationship between the fatigue crack propagation rate and cycle, the fatigue crack propagation rate showed higher gradient in the room temperature than the low temperature due to the increment in ductility at low temperature.

  • Biodegradation of vanous medium-chain-length polyhydroxyalkanoates (MCL-PHAs) by an extracellular depolymerase system from Pseudomonas sp. RY-1 was investigated under laboratoly conditions. The degradation rate of the polymers was determined by quantitative clem zone technique, enzyme (turbidity) assay, and respirometry assay. Although the enzyme system secreted by Pscudomor~as sp. RY-1 was capable of degrading all MCL-PHAs tested. its secretion was influenced by the availability of secondary carbon sources. The rate of enzymatic degradation of MCL-PHAs was dependent upou the monomeric composition of the polyesters and reduced as the chain lengths of the monomer m t s in the polyesters increased. MCL-PHAs containing C-even monomer units showed faster degradation rate than MCL-PHAs containing C-odd monomer units. Respiration rates of MCL-PHAs with C-even monomer uuts were also much faster than those of MCL-PHAs with C-odd monomer units. The degmdation rate of MCL-PHAs bearing unsaturated substituents was faster than that of mcl-PHAs without functional substituents, which is suggesting the correlation between the degradation rate and the crystallinity of MCL-PHAs.

  • Smoothing is a transmission plan where variable rate video data is converted to a constant bit rate stream. Among them are CHA, MCBA. MVBA, e-PCRTT and others. E-PCRTT algorithm, which was improved from PCRTT, restricts the number of rate changes with fixed-size run. This causes unnecessary rate changes and may not guarantee QoS when buffer size is small. In this paper. a smoothing algorithm is pro-posed, where the number of rate changes are not limited and the size of run can be flexible, in order to overcome the shortcomings of e-PCRTT. Experiments demonstrated that the proposed algorithm such as e-PCRTT. In order to show the performance, var-ious evaluation factors were used such as the nember of rate changes, buffer size to maintain QoS, and so on.

  • Minimizing the cylinder wear and the consumption rate of cylinder oil in a large two-stroke diesel engine is of great economic importance. A motor-driven cylinder lubricator for Sulzer RT-flex large two-stroke diesel engines developed by authors is in need of improving the lubricating system to lubricate cylinder parts optimally by an electronically controlled quill device according to changes of engine load and revolution speed. In order to apply the developed accumulating distributor to an integrated cylinder lubricator by the electronically controlled system as the third research stage, the lubricating system is improved in the electronically controlled quill device with a solenoid valve. In this study, the effects of lubricator revolution speed, driving pressure(or plunger stroke) and cylinder back pressure on oil feed rate and lubrication inequality rate are investigated by using the integrated cylinder lubricator system with an accumulated distribution by the electronic control(I.C.S.), and the oil feed rate and lubrication inequality rate of I.C.S. are compared with those of the motor-driven cylinder lubricator by the electronically controlled quill system equipped with an accumulating distributor(E.D.S.). It is found that the oil feed rate of I.C.S. is smaller than that of E.D.S. due to the reduction of delivery velocity by the higher delivery pressure, and the variances of lubrication inequality rate for I.C.S. have become smaller than those of E.D.S. as the driving pressure in all experimental conditions increases, except for the driving pressure of 26 bar(plunger stroke 2 mm) at the cylinder lubricator speed of 120 rpm.
