Uptake of Carbon and Nitrogen by Microcystis Algal Assemblages in the Seonakdong River

  • Carbon ($^{14}CO_2$) and nitrogen ($^{15}NH_4$ and $^{15}NO_3$) uptake were measured at two stations in the hypertrophic zone of the Seonakdong River, where Microcystis aeruginosa explosively bloomed in September 1998. Significant nitrogen limitation occurred in the period of Microcystis bloom, while phosphorus limitation was common in the river. The specific nitrogen ($NH_4$ + $NO_3$) uptake was 12-50 $\mu$mol mg chl-a$^{-1}$ hr$^{-1}$ at two stations, showing substantially higher than for any other freshwaters. The specific nirtogen uptake was higher at the GAR Station of the nitrogen-limited area and this high nirtogen uptake resulted in low $^{14}C:^{15}N$ atomic ratios of algal uptake. Carbon uptake was dependent upon irradiance, decreasing gradually toward the bottom in the euphotic zone, whereas the nitrogen uptake increased slightly toward the bottom. $NH_4$ preferable uptake against $NO_3$ was hardly discemilble due to the fact that it exceeded the $NH_4$ ambient concentraiton. The $^{14}C:^{15}N$ atomic ratios of algal uptake in the surface waters approached the Redfield C:N ratio.

Effect of Different Dietary n-6 to n-3 Fatty Acid Ratios on the Performance and Fatty Acid Composition in Muscles of Broiler Chickens

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the different dietary ratios of n-6 to n-3 (n-6/n-3) fatty acid (FA) on performance and n-6/n-3 FA in muscles of broiler chickens. A total of 300 one-day-old Cobb chicks were randomly assigned to 3 treatments of 10 replicates in each (10 birds/replicate). Birds were fed on a corn-soybean meal-based diet containing 1% oil during starter (day 1 to 21) and 2% oil during finisher (day 22 to 39) phases, respectively. Treatments of high, medium and low dietary n-6/n-3 FA were formulated by replacing rice bran oil with linseed oil to achieve n-6/n-3 FA close to >20:1, 10:1 and 5:1, respectively. Average daily gain, average daily feed intake, and feed conversion ratio were similar (p>0.05) among the treatments. Serum glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides concentrations were not affected (p>0.05) by dietary treatments. In breast, concentration of C18:3n-3 was significantly greater (p = 0.001) for medium and low vs high n-6/n-3 FA, while concentrations of C20:5n-3, C22:6n-3, total n-3 FA, and n-6/n-3 FA were significantly higher for low vs medium, and medium vs high dietary n-6/n-3 FA. In contrast, concentrations of C18:2 and mono-unsaturated FA (MUFA) were lower for low vs high dietary n-6/n-3 FA. In thigh muscles, concentrations of C20:5n-3 were higher (p<0.05) for medium and low vs high dietary n-6/n-3 FA, and concentrations of C18:3n-3, C22:6, and n-3 FA were greater (p<0.05) for medium vs high, low vs medium dietary n-6/n-3 FA. However, concentrations of C18:1, MUFA, n-6/n-3 were lower (p<0.05) for low and medium vs high dietary n-6/n-3 FA. In conclusion, lowering the dietary n-6/n-3 FA did not affect the performance of chickens, but enhanced beneficial long-chain n-3 FA and decreased n-6/n-3 FA in chicken breast and thigh, which could be advantageous for obtaining healthy chicken products.

N, P 농도에 따른 Chlorella vulgaris의 성장 및 하수고도처리능 평가 (Advanced wastewater treatment capacity and growth of Chlorella vulgaris by nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations)

  • The growth and removal capacity of nitrogen and phosphorus of Chlorella vulgaris were evaluated in artificial wastewater with different nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations as element growing components for microalgae growth. The nitrogen concentration was varied in 9, 15, 30 and 60 mg-N/L with fixed phosphorus concentration of 3 mg-P/L. The growth and phosphorus removal capacity of C. vulgaris were high at initial nitrogen concentration of 15 and 30 mg-N/L, and the corresponding N/P ratios calculated were 5 and 10. In the case of varying in 1.5, 3, 6 and 10 mg-P/L of phosphorus concentration with fixed nitrogen concentration of 30 mg-N/L, the growth and removal capacity of nitrogen and phosphorus were excellent with phosphorus concentration of 3 and 6 mg-P/L. The corresponding N/P ratios were shown as 10 and 5. Therefore, the appropriate N/P ratio was concluded between 5 and 10 for wastewater treatment using C. vulgaris.

Effect of C/N Ratio on Composting Treatment of TNT-Contaminated Soil

  • This research was conducted to estimate the effect of C/N ratio control on composting of TNT (2,4,6 trinitrotoluene)-contaminated soil. Glucose or acetone was selected to control C/N ratio of the contaminated soil. The C/N ratios of the controlled experiment and no controlled one were 26.0 and 6.6, respectively. During 45days, the degradation efficiency (96.0 or 91.8%) of acetone or glucose C/N ratio controlled soil was higher than that (78.4%) of no C/N ratio controlled case. The first order degradation rate constant of glucose or acetone C/N ratio control was 0.0641 or 0.0820/day. This constant was over twice 0.0356/day of no C/N ratio control. The C/N ratio control with glucose or acetone also showed a rather high $CO_2$ evolution than that without C/N ratio control. It was proven that C/N ratio control for composting of TNT-contaminated soil improved the treatment efficiency.

당밀과 질산성 질소의 C/N ratio 변화에 따른 탈질 및 미생물 군집 특성에 관한 연구 (A study on the denitrification and microbial community characteristics by the change of C/N ratio of molasses and nitrate nitrogen)

  • 본 연구에서 탈질 효율 비교를 위해 당밀과 메탄올을 외부 탄소원으로 사용하였다. 세부 실험조건은 C/N ratio 조건에 따라 구분하였다. 회분식 실험 결과, 당밀과 메탄올 모두 C/N ratio가 증가할수록 탈질 효율은 증가하였다. 당밀의 최적 C/N ratio는 잔류 COD 농도와 탈질 효율을 고려할 때 4:1로 나타났으며, 이때 탈질 효율은 91.4%이다. 동역학적 인자로 SDNR을 도출한 결과, C/N ratio가 증가할수록 당밀과 메탄올은 유사한 SDNR 값을 보였으며, C/N ratio 4:1 조건에서 0.0292 g $NO_3{^-}-N$ removal/g MLVSS/day (molasse), 0.0299 g $NO_3{^-}-N$ removal/g MLVSS/day (mehtanol)로 나타났다. 미생물 군집 분석을 통해 당밀에 적응된 슬러지에는 Pseudomonas sp.와 Bergeylla sp. 박테리아가 우점화 된 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 미생물 군집의 다양성보다는 일부 박테리아에 대한 집중성이 더 높게 나타났다. 이에 따라 당밀은 탈질에 특화된 미생물을 집중적으로 성장시키며, 탈질 성능을 높일 수 있는 대체 외부탄소원으로 적용이 가능할 것으로 판단된다.

  • The vertical distribution of HCN, $HC_3N$ and $C_2N_2$ have been determined from a sequence of Voyager 1 IRIS limb tangent measurements over Titan's north polar region. This sequence yields gas distributions with ${\sim}200\;km$ altitude resolution over the 50-400 km range. The derived mixing ratios of HCN, $HC_3N$ and $C_2N_2$ are $5{\times}10^{-7}$, $7{\times}10^{-8}$ and $8{\times}10^{-9}$, respectively, at 120 km with a factor of 3 uncertainty.

Circulating Lymphocytes as Predictors of Sensitivity to Preoperative Chemoradiotherapy in Rectal Cancer Cases

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to identify clinical predictive factors for tumor response after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) in locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). Methods: All factors were evaluated in 88 patients with LARC treated with nCRT. After a long period of 4-8 weeks of chemoradiotherapy, 3 patients achieved clinical complete response (cCR) and thus aggressive surgery was avoided, and the remaining 85 patients underwent a curative-intent operation. The response to nCRT was evaluated by tumor regression grade (TRG) system. Results: There were 32 patients (36.4%) with good tumor regression (TRG 3-4) and 56 (63.6%) with poor tumor regression (TRG 0-2). Lymphocyte counts and ratios were higher in good response cases (P=0.01, 0.03, respectively) while neutrophil ratios and N/L ratios were higher in poor response cases (P=0.04, 0.02, respectively). High lymphocyte ratios before nCRT and good tumor regression (TRG3-4) were significantly associated with improved 5-year disease-free survival (P<0.05). Pretreatment nodal status was also significantly associated with 5-year disease-free survival and 5-year overall survival (P<0.05). Multivariate analysis confirmed that the pretreatment lymphocyte ratio and lymph nodal status were independent prognostic factors. Conclusion: Our study suggested that LARC patients with high lymphocyte ratios before nCRT would have good tumor response and high 5-year DFS and OS.

Bench-scale 선박용 고도수처리장치에서의 T-N 제거효율 연구 (A Study on Removal Efficiency of T-N in Bench-scale for Shipboard Sewage Treatment Plant)

  • In this study, the International Maritime Organization (IMO)'s guideline MEPC. 277 (64) was developed and evaluated for the removal efficiency of T-N in a SBR and MBR combined process. This combined process of resized equipment based on large capacity water treatment device for a protection of marine aquatic life. In this experiment, T-N concentration of influent and effluent was measured through with the artificial wastewater. The SBR reactor operation time was varied according to the C : N : P ratios so that different conditions for mixing and aeration period in mins (90 : 60, 80 : 40, 70 : 50) and two C: N: P ratios (10 : 5 : 3, 10 : 3 : 1) were used. During experiment in the reactor's aeration and anoxic tank DO concentrations were 3 mg/L and 0.2 mg/L respectively. Furthermore, in the reactor MLSS concentration was 2000 mg/L and flowrate was 2 L/hr. Experiment results showed that C : N : P, 10 : 3 : 1 ratio with 90 mins mixing and 60 mins aeration maximized removal efficiency at 97.3% T-N as compared to other conditions. The application of the SBR and MBR combined process showed efficient results.

칡넝쿨 및 톱밥을 이용한 C/N비 조절에 따른 음식물찌꺼기의 발효특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Fermentation Characteristics of Garbages by the C/N Ratio Control using Kudzu Creeper and Sawdust)

  • In this study, to determine the optimum fermentation process for the feed production of food wastes and estimate the practical value of fermented feed using kudzu creeper and sawdust as bulking agent. This study considered initial C/N ratio control as the fermentation process variables. The results are summarized as follows. Minimum water contents of byproducts in the fermentation feed production showed 3994(kudzu), 37%( sawdust) at the C/N ratio 25 and 45%(kudzu, sawdust) at the C/N ratio 35. Temperature variations in the fermentation feed production at the C/n ratio 25 indicated 68'C(kudzu), 70'C (sawdust).Optimum condition of consists of fermentation process of water content, C/N ratio and permeability (porous structure of the mixture). For optimum fermentation of gravitationally, dewatered garbage, the proper mixing ratios of kudzu(moisture contents : 17.3%) and sawdust(moisture contents : 13.2%) were 41% and 39%, respectively Major biological reaction in the aerobic fermentation feed production occurred during 12~14hrs

Tertiary denitrification of the secondary effluent in biofilters packed with composite carriers under different carbon to nitrogen ratios

  • A new type of biofilter packed with composite carriers was designed for tertiary denitrification of the secondary effluent with removal of both oxidized nitrogen and suspended solids (SS). At the empty bed residence time of 15 min and organic carbon to nitrate nitrogen ($C/NO_3-N$) ratios of 2, 1.5 and 1 g/g, the removal percentage of $NO_3-N$ was 67%, 58% and 36% in the ethanol biofilter, and was 61%, 43% and 26% in the acetate biofilter, respectively. The biofilters packed with composite carriers removed SS effectively, with the effluent turbidity in both biofilters of less than 3 NTU. During the operating cycle between the biofilter backwashings, the $NO_3-N$ removal percentage decreased initially after backwashing, and then gradually increased. Under $C/NO_3-N$ ratios of 2, 1.5 and 1 g/g, the $NO_3-N$ reduction rate was 1.75, 1.04 and $0.68g/m^2/d$ in the ethanol biofilter, and was 1.56, 1.07 and $0.76g/m^2/d$ in the acetate biofilter, respectively. In addition, during denitrification, the ratio of the consumed chemical oxygen demand to the removed $NO_3-N$ was 5.06-8.23 g/g in the ethanol biofilter, and was 4.26-8.6 g/g in the acetate biofilter.
