A comparison of the welding performance of ship hull structural steels has been made. The weldability of steels especially designed for laser processing was compared to that of conventional hull and structural steels with plate thicknesses up to 12 mm. Autogenous laser beam welding was used to weld butt joints as well as skid and stake welded T-joints. The welds were assessed in accordance with the document "The Classification Societies" Requirements for Approval of $CO_2$ Laser Welding Procedures" Small imperfections in the weld only grew slightly in root bend tests and they only had a minor influence on the fatigue properties of laser fillet welded joints. In Charpy impact tests, the 27 J transition temperature of the weld metal and HAZ ranged from below -60 to $-50^{\circ}C$. The amount of martensite in the weld metal depended on the carbon equivalent of the steel with the highest amounts and highest hardness levels in conventional EH 36 (389 HV 5). Thermomechanically rolled steels contained less martensite and showed a correspondingly lower maximum hardness.ximum hardness.

Small imperfections in the weld only grew slightly in root bend tests and they only had a minor influence on the fatigue properties of laser fillet welded joints. In Charpy impact tests, the 27 J transition temperature of the weld metal and HAZ ranged from below -60 to -5$0^{\circ}C$. The amount of martensite in the weld metal depended on the carbon equivalent of the steel with the highest amounts and highest hardness levels in conventional EH 36 (389 HV 5). Thermomechanically rolled steels contained less martensite and showed a correspondingly lower maximum hardness.
The Friction Stir Welding (FSW) has mainly been used for making butt joints in Al alloys. Development of FSW would expand the number of applications. The FSW is a relatively solid-state joining process. This study possibility of a welding between C1020 and Al6063 by means of FSW has fundamentally clarified. The primary process parameters, such as a rotating speed, rotating direction of tool and off-set of pin periphery from materials interface were optimize, respectively.
This paper presents a method of calculation of the stresses, the strains and the deflections due to welding in L shape and in T shape. Using step by step method of plasticity and establishing the equilibrium conditions in section, we calculated thermal stresses and strains during welding and in the final step of calculation we got the residual stresses, strains and the deflections due to welding. Also we measured the stresses and the strains with hole-drilling method and compared the results with the method of calculation presented in this paper. Because of its symmetry of section, the deflection due to welding in T shape is generally much less than that in L shape. The residual stresses are tensile in welded joints and HAZ, and compressive in base metal as butt welding of plates, but the compressive stresses in base metal decrease repidly as the points are away from welded joint except horizontal plates of T shape. The theoretical method of calculaiton presented in this paper coincides faily well with the experiment.
In order to investigate characteristics of surface fatigue crack propagation from a pit shaped surface defect which frequently exists around welded joints, SS400 steel with thickness of 12mm, which has been generally used for structure members, was welded with submerged-arc butt type and machined for both surface. An initial surface defect of pit shape with the aspect ratio of 2 was made on the specimen. The initial defect was located at 5 different zones over the weldment : weld metal zone, boundary between weld metal and HAZ, HAZ, boundary between HAZ and base metal. Characteristics of surface fatigue crack propagation from the defect on each region under the same loading condition were investigated and compared.
In the field of welding the mechanical behavior of a welded structure under consideration may be predicted via heat transfer and welding residual stress analysis. Usually such numerical analyses are limited to small regular mesh models or test specimens. Nevertheless, there is very few strength assessment of the whole structure that includes the effect of welded residual stress. The present work is based on the specialized finite element codes for the calculation of nonlinear heat transfer details and residual stress including the external load on the welded RHS (Rectangular Hollow Section) T-joint connections of the whole structure. First the thermal history of the combined fillet and butt-welded T-joint equal width cold-formed RHS are calculated using nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) considering the quarter model of the joint. Then using this thermal history the residual stress around the joints has been evaluated. To validity the FEA result, the calculated residual stresses were compared with the available experimental results. The residual stress obtained from the quarter model is mapped to the full model and then to the whole structure model using FEM codes. The results from the FEM codes were exported to the commercial package for visualization and further analysis applying loads and boundary conditions on the whole structure. The residual stress redistribution along with the external applied load is examined computationally.
Recently, smaller and lighter products have become of interest in industry applications that increasingly demand thin plate joints of thickness 1.0 mm or less using friction stir welding. In this study, high frequency spindles that run at 3,500-6,500 rpm are introduced for thin friction stir-welded plates. Weldability tests are performed for the butt-joint method of Al5052-H32 alloy of 1.0 mm thickness under 3,500-6,500 rpm spindle revolution with 250-400 mm/min feed speed. An optical microscope was used to analyze the bid structure of the welded zone and stir zone. The tensile-strength and hardness of the welded zone were then measured.
