  • In fisheries, as well as in other natural resource-based industries, there is difference between profit and rent. The former is a basic indicator for gauging the business performance of firms, while the latter is for the evaluation of the contribution of resources and industry to economic welfare. Put simply, resource economists are mainly concerned about rent, including pure resource rent and producer surplus (intra-marginal rent [IMR]). In other hand, business economists are mainly concerned about the profitability of the firms comprising the industry. In the academic literature, there are not always clear definitions of the profit and rent concepts and their use in actual analyses. This article will mainly discuss and clarify differences and similarities in profit and rent concepts. In the classical fisheries economic model with one-dimensional homogenous effort and a constant cost per unit of effort, no rent exists in open-access equilibrium. A simple change in this model, for example by introducing heterogeneous effort, opens it to the existence of rent, specifically IMR, at open-access equilibrium. We estimated resource rent and profit from the data using SNA(system of national accounts) and accounting data methods. RR(resource rent) is composed of value-added, compensation of employees, consumption of fixed capital and normal profit in SNA. RR(resource rent) is composed of EBT, Depreciation of fishing rights, financial costs of fishing rights and calculated interests on equity in accounting data methods. We found that the result of two methods is equal. RR is composed of excess profit, rent and interest expenses. In Korea, the magnitude of RR and profit is not different significantly.

  • An instrument which practitioners have acknowledged as an essential mechanism used in supporting greenhorn companies is the business incubation system. Several countries of the world have implemented the business incubation concept ever since it was conceived and developed in the United States in 1959. It is a model that has typically given itself much more readily within industrialized countries with identical environments to the United States. Nigeria also adapted it in 1993 where the resulting process and practice failed to live up to anticipations. To determine the significant role of government policy on the incubation dimensions and its success is the purpose of this research. Data collection process involved the surveying of stakeholders in Nigeria with some direct involvement in the national programme. The Partial Least Squares (PLS) was employed for the analysis. The findings showed that all exogenous variables collectively explained 52.4% of the variance in success. Meanwhile, when a moderation effect is present; the variable increased to 62.3%. Consequently, it is recommended that for a business incubation scheme to be successful and effective, government needs to implement efficient policies since results showed that these policies influenced all the relationships. The results' implications as well as limitations of the study are discussed.

  • The research objectives are to study the implementation of Islamic Corporate Social Responsibility (i-CSR) values in BMT UGT Sidogiri, an Islamic microfinance institution in Indonesia based on Islamic boarding school or pesantren. This research employed a post-positivist paradigm. Data observation was performed by conducting an in-depth interview with several informants. The data analysis utilized an interactive model technique. The research results showed that i-CSR was successfully implemented in the Islamic microfinance institution based on Islamic boarding school due to the mutual passion (convergence) with conventional CSR typologies. The convergence is in two ways, firstly managerial behavior that focuses on protecting company stakeholders, second, creating sustainable corporate values through effective and efficient business activities. The orientation is the creation of a social role based on justice and sustainable development. The convergence is mainly in the dimensions of economic, legal, ethical and philanthropic responsibilities. The Islamic values have enriched the implementation of i-CSR as the form of practicing the teachings of Islam and evidence of human servitude to God so that the behaviors become worthy of worship. The implementation of i-CSR focused on the Islamic teachings. Compliance to Islamic jurisprudence and apply it in business activities became a divergent element of conventional CSR concept.

  • As credit loan products significantly increase in most financial institutions, the number of fraudulent transactions is also growing rapidly. Therefore, to manage the financial risks successfully, the financial institutions should reinforce the qualifications for a loan and augment the ability to detect a credit loan fraud proactively. In the process of building a classification model to detect credit loan frauds, utility from classification results (i.e., benefits from correct prediction and costs from incorrect prediction) is more important than the accuracy rate of classification. The objective of this paper is to propose a new approach to building a classification model for detecting credit loan fraud based on an individual-level utility. Experimental results show that the model comes up with higher utility than the fraud detection models which do not take into account the individual-level utility concept. Also, it is shown that the individual-level utility computed by the model is more accurate than the mean-level utility computed by other models, in both opportunity utility and cash flow perspectives. We provide diverse views on the experimental results from both perspectives.

  • To survive in the ever-changing environment, organizations need to improve or innovate their business processes. As a result, to attain this objective, BPM (Business Process Management) concept is widely adopted in modern enterprises. BPM life cycle consists of diagnosis, design, implementation and enactment. Conventionally, diagnosis of business process within the BPM life cycle is usually conducted by manual methods such as interviews, questionnaires and direct observations of process. And (re)designing business processes is also usually done manually under supervision of business experts from scratch. It is time-consuming and error-prone tasks. The objective of this research is to integrate the diagnosis and (re)design phase of BPM life cycle by sharing automatically generated process model and basic statistics in the diagnosis phase based on the process mining method. Eventually, this approach will lead to automate the tasks of diagnosis and design of business process. To implement and to show the usefulness of the proposed framework, two case studies were conducted in this research.

  • In this paper, we present a case study of a new emerging business startup involved in smart house appliances. The irreversible investment concept and real-option theory are introduced as the fundamentals of the model. By using games theory we show that the startup's actions can trigger reactions from other firms. The first part covers initial the research and development stage, while the second part covers production and commercialization. The findings of this study suggest that, given a certain amount of initial investment, an open and shared innovation may lead to hurting a firm's investment while strengthening the competitors' position in the market. However, given the sensitivity analysis, when volatility and demand grow favorably, sharing R&D investment is not a bad option for a new player to adjust its position in the market while still maintaining positive returns.
