A Study on the Determinants Analysis of the Port Competitiveness and development Strategies of Busan New Port (항만경쟁력 결정요인 분석과 부산 신항의 발전 전략에 관한 연구)

  • Under the influence of ever-globalized world economy, Yangsan Port of Shanghai, a central hub of Chinese economy, was opened up on Dec. 1, 2005 in the expectation of heart of northeast Asian harbor logistics. It has triggered severer competitions among northeast Asian ports. In an effort to keep robust standing as a central port of northeast Asia, Korea has still built additional new ports and opened up 3 docks in Nov. 2005. Amid these changing port environments, it is foremost to take the competitive edges of new ports in advance of major rival ports in the interest of preoccupying the standing of those new ports as the central hub of northeast logistics. According to the developmental strategies of new ports can be summed up as follows: First, it is required to separate port development from marketing as a part of separating developmental entity from management/maintenance entity. Second, it is required to develop dedicated port for feeder vessels along with new ports to save more time and cost spent by shipping companies. Third, the attraction of jumbo shipping companies to port development needs differentiated countermeasures for each shipping company, and those measures should be taken in advance before jumbo shippers decide their own shipping strategies in future. Fourth, in terms of incentives for attracting jumbo shipping companies, it is required to offer the incentives to them in using new ports in connection with Busan ports. Fifth, it is critical to set up a benchmark of competitors(ports) for establishing one-stop automatic administration process system upon developing ports. Finally, it is required to prepare a plan for using rearward lands in connection with ports for more efficient use of development complex behind port.

International Tourists 'Attitude to Theme Park Development of Busan

  • A theme park is a tourism destination attracting a lot of tourists. Many local authorities establish theme parks within their own territory. Busan Metropolitan City tries to host an attractive theme park, and to make the city known as the tourism destination for 21st century. The purpose of this paper is to suggest a policy and management strategy of theme park based on questionnaire analysis for international tourists visiting Busan. First, it is needed to supply low land price to reduce construction cost and to attract investors from the public and private sectors. Second, the theme park has to have attractive themes and new events for repeaters. Third, infra structures related to the theme parks should be provided for the easy accessibility. Finally more emphasis should be placed on public relation and service education for employees.

Development Possibility of Busan as a Cruise Center (부산의 크루즈 중심지로 발전 가능성에 대한 연구)

  • Asia's cruise industry is growing rapidly with the number of tourists increasing every year. This growth has encouraged intense competition among leading port cities in Asia to retain cruise tourists and cruise lines. The purpose of this study is to analyze the development of the cruise industry around Busan as a hybrid port city and propose new strategies for improving Busan's competitiveness. To achieve these goals, factor analysis and Importance-performance analysis (IPA) are used. The analyses results suggest that the development possibility of Busan as a cruise center is dependent on the improvement of certain factors, including the variety of inland tour options, unique experience, direct service infrastructure, tourist attractions, wide accessibility to other modes, and strong connection to attraction. In addition, the city needs to meet other requirements, including developing various tours, tourist products, and fly & cruise packages and hosting international festivals that can represent Busan and cater to potential cruise customers. Moreover, the city desperately needs to expand its commercial and cultural space by redeveloping its cruise terminals.

  • This dissertation analysed actuality and literatures aimed at optimizing added value of Busan Port. As far as the literatures are concerned, the limits and the direction to go of Busan Port have been reached through analysing and comparing Busan Port, Antwerp Port, and Rotterdam Port by their each function. While Rotterdam and Antwerp Port are each functioning as an integrated port disposing container freight, general freight and liquid cargo, the container of Busan port contributes over 88 percent of its cargo and the function of the others like bulk is scattered to Ulsan, Masan, and Jinjae Port. Hereby, Busan Port needs to develop its function so as not to duplicate its function with the others in Korea and add value of theirs each. As a result of the local experts about analysing actuality, it turn out that it is similar with the literatures. In macroscopic view, specialization mainly with container, general cargo disposal ability enforcement and etc. are the most important. In microscopic view, rear complex of container tier and the supply base of liquid energy.

A Study on the Microcomputer Aided Port Design Simulation and its Application to the Third State Busan Port Development Project. (컴퓨터시뮬레이션을 이용한 항만설계 및 부산항 3단계 개발 계획에 관한 응용에 관한 연구)

  • This work aims to introduce the concept of microcomputer aided port design simulation methodology including the analysis of the mathematical models to be implemented and apply it to the Third Stage Busan Port Development Project. In the Busan case study, the size of the proposed turning basin of the new terminal, together with the operational strategies of berthing and unberthing, was examined, In addition, the safety on ship's entry and exit through the projected new breakwaters was ascertained. From the application of simulation to the Busan project, it was found that the proposed dredging area was not sufficiently wide enough for the modelled container ship to perform A time unberthing (in which the ship turns to port as she manoeuvres away from N.1. Berth with the assistance of tugs), especially in a strong easterly wind. It is therefore, recommended that Busan pilots should be advised to sue B type unberthing strategy, in which the ship goes astern from no.1 berth tot he turning area in front of No.2 berth(where the ship turns 180 degrees clockwise), especially when the wind is very strong, It is also recommended that a sea buoy be placed outside the new breakwaters, as this was found to improve the safety of ship manoeuvres through the breakwaters significantly . Another recommendation is that the Korean hydrodynamic Office carry out a detailed survey of the currents in the water area near the new breakwaters once they have been constructed. In addition, it is to be recommended that a current meter be placed at the recommended sea buoy to improve the safety of ship manoeuvres which could otherwise be jeopardised by eeroneos current information.

Estimation of Sea Water Transport by Water-depth Variation at Pier-bridge between Busan New-port and the Nakdong River Estuary (부산 신항-낙동강 하구역 연결잔교부의 물질수송 해석(II) - 잔교주변 해저수심변화에 따른 해수소통량 예측 -)

  • This study analyzed the characteristics of sea water transport between Busan New-port and the Nakdong River estuary. Numerical modeling was used to evaluate the characteristics of the tidal current. Numerical simulations of three different topographies were conducted. The results are summarized as follows: 1) The volume of sea water transport was reduced by $0.7{\sim}18.4%$ when water depth was decreased at Busan New-port (10 m); 2) The volume of sea water transport was increased by $3.5{\sim}21.9%$ when a channel (depth 5 m) was constructed in the direction of the Nakdong River estuary.

The Study on Development of Incheon new port in the perspective of introducing Trigger Rule (Trigger Rule 도입에 따른 인천신항 발전방향에 관한 연구)

  • This study is to contribute to create favorable conditions for developing the new port in a timely and as well helps to propose role and establish status of incheon port in the future by reviewing port facility capacity of Incheon Newport, applied trigger rule reasonably. By applying trigger rule with annual growth rate(11.4%) between 2001 to 2009 rules it will be 18 berths reducing 2 years for completion date than annual growth rate(9.4%) forecasted by Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs. This paper first suggests the tri-ports policies including Incheon new port, Busan port and Gwang-Yang port and creating favorable conditions for the early completion and lastly attracting high valued-added transshipment cargo for developing incheon new port in a timely.

  • The ongoing development of Distriparks, the increase in workers inside the warehouses, and the growth in traffic volume have shifted the attention of the many D.C. operators on how to utilize their warehouse spaces more profitably and economically. A total of 550 cars and trucks are illegally parked at the distribution centers everyday. To meet these challenges, port authorities are looking closely at how they can establish effective countermeasures to solve this problem and satisfy customers of the Distripark. In order to answer these questions, this article sought to identity and analyze the current status of the illegal parking issues and main causes of that phenomena. In addition to summarizing an actual outcomes of the illegal parking problems, the research also examines the legal and practical countermeasures of this issues. Finally this research tries to find future solutions for ports in the Distripark development process, with particular reference to the legal and managerial aspects.

Industrial Fluctuations and Locality of Busan with Records (기록으로 본 부산의 산업변동과 로컬리티)

  • This study analyzes the process of growth of Busan from a fishing village to the capital city of South Gyeongsang Province and the central city of transportation and commerce, and an industry with records. The results of the analysis are as follows: after the port opened in 1876, there has been a decline in settlement spaces in Dongnae; on the other hand, there has been an increase in migration spaces around the port of Busan. Waegwan (倭館) nearby Yongdusan Mountain (龍頭山) was changed to the Japanese concession; thus, the number of Japanese moving into Busan had rapidly increased. As a result, the Japanese government carried out reclamation work for securing available lands for the construction of port facilities and other facilities. The Japanese government built public offices and houses, as well as production facilities for daily necessities around the port of Busan. The opening of the Seoul Busan railway (京釜線) and the cross-channel liner between Busan and Shimonoseki (釜關連絡船) led to the growth of Busan and the development of its status. At this time, as the main industry of Busan was trade, Busan had grown as a commercial city. As Busan had grown as a central city of transportation and commerce, the provincial government building of Gyeongsangnam-do (慶尙南道) moved to Busan. Thus, Busan became the central city of local politics and administration. After the Land Survey Project, a large scale of farmers were recruited for low-wage work in the new port. Because of the abolition of the corporation law, Japanese capitalists moved into their colony in Busan. There, large-scale factories, such as the Joseon cotton textile factory, were established. Through this process, the locality of Busan was changed from a fishing village to a commercial city and, finally, to a city of commerce and industry.

Characteristics of Waves around the Sea near Busan New Port Based on Continuous Long-term Observations during Recent 10 years (최근 10년간 장기연속관측에 근거한 부산항 신항 인근 해역의 파랑특성)

  • Long-term wave observation was carried out near Busan New Port and the major wave characteristics were analyzed. At Busan New Port, waves from south direction were predominant throughout the year, while waves from the west, developed at the north sea of Geoje island, appeared almost the same frequency in winter season, showing apparent seasonal variation. During the observation period, the significant wave height was mostly less than 1 m, but it reached its maximum of 8.0 m when typhoon Maemi passed on September 2003. Also, the seasonal variation was hardly observed except July. In contrast, seasonal variation was apparent for the significant wave period, whose peak ranges 4~5 s in summer whereas about 3 s in winter. The largest significant wave period was 15.56 s, observed on June 2003. Meanwhile, the annual variation was negligible for mean wave direction as well as significant wave height and period. Further analysis of the wave data acquired for 5 years at 4.5 km south, in the south sea of Daejuk island, confirmed high correlation between the two observation points in summer and vice versa in winter.
