A Study on the Removal Efficiency of Pesticide Residues in Fruits and Vegetables Treated by Additional Materials (첨가제 처리에 의한 과.채류 중 잔류농약 제거효과 연구)

  • This study was conducted to experiment the removal efficiency of 6 pesticides in fruits and vegetables using various washing solutions. As results, the average removal efficiencies of pesticides washed with tap-water were 68.3%, whereas those washed by ultrasonic cleaning for 2 and 5 minutes were 73.7% and 82.5%, respectively. Using different washing solutions with various additional materials such as 0.5% detergent, 5% vinegar, 5% salt and flour, the removal rates were 82.9%, 76.9%, 75.8% and 75.7%, respectively. With 0.5% detergent, pesticides were 20% more removed when washed by ultrasonic cleaning than tap-water washing; moreover, Chlorthalonil in cherry tomato showed the highest removal efficiency while EPN in grape washed with tap-water showed the lowest. The order of removal efficiencies of pesticides were Chlorthalonil (90.0%)>Procymidone (81.3%)>Chlorpyrifos (76.6 %)>Endosulfan (75.7%)>Fenitrothion (75.5%)>EPN (73.8%).

Detection and Distribution of Bacterial Pathogens in Raw Water and During Water Treatment Process by Polymerase Chain Reaction (유전자 검색법을 이용한 상수원수와 정수처리 공정중의 병원성 미생물 검출 및 분포특성)

  • The development of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology has the potential to solve for isolating pathogenic microorganisms from environmental samples than traditional plate counting methods. We have been detected pathogenic bacteria from raw water and water treatment process in Busan metropolitan city by PCR method. According to the result of survey from July 2004 to October 2005, 80 out of 92(87.0%) were positive for bacterial pathogens in raw water samples and positive rate of Shigella spp., Yersinia spp., Salmonella spp. and Legionella spp. were 46.2%, 40.7%, 17.6% and 9.9%, respectively. Pathogenic bacteria in raw water was mainly distributed through the lately Autumn to the winter and more highly detected Maeri than Mulgum region. During the period of survey in water treatment process, Shigella spp. was highly detected but all of bacterial pathogens were entirely removed after in post-ozonation step. These suggest that waters supplied in Busan metropolitan city may be safe against the pathogenic bacteria.

Isolation and Managemental Method of Fungi Genera in Raw Water (수계에 존재하는 곰팡이속 분리동정 및 관리방안 조사)

  • Fungi, including allergenic, pathogenic or toxigenic species, may have direct effects on human health, interfere with the disinfection process and maintenance of chlorine residual, and add to taste and odor problems. We surveyed distribution of waterborne fungi from raw water in Busan metropolitan city using the EPA standard method. According to the survey, conducted from March 2008 to October 2008, the number of fungi in raw water was high in September and low in April. Quantitative enumeration of fungi per 100 ml of raw water ranged from 5 to 64 CFU, and a higher number was detected in the Mulgum region compared to the Maeri region. Total fungi numbers highly correlated with pH, water temperature and total coliform in this area. Predominant fungi genera grown in medium were identified as Aspergillus, Penicillum, Histoplasma, Rhizopus, Trichophyton, Mucor and Sporthrix species. Aspergillus flavus and Penicillum notatum were particularly dominant in both areas. There were a total of 6 and 9 species detected in the Mulgum and Maeri regions respectively, and the number of species was more verified in the Maeri region than the Mulgum region.

Characteristics of Staphylococcus aureus Isolated from Patients with Diarrhea. (설사 환자에서 분리된 Staphylococcus aureus의 특성)

  • The major causative bacteria of food poisoning were Salmonella spp. $(35.6\%)$, Staphylococcus aureus $(11.3\%)$ and Vibrio parahaemolyticus $(3.2\%)$ in our country. In this study we attempted isolation of S. aureus from stools of patients with diarrhea. Sixty-four strains $(9.1\%)$ were isolated from 704 the stools of patients with diarrhea. The enterotoxin was detected from 29 isolates $(45.3\%)$: 24 isolates $(37.5\%)$, 3 isolates $(4.7\%)$ and 2 isolates $(3.1\%)$ were A, B and C type, respectively. In the antibiotic susceptibility, 63 isolates $(98.4\%)$ were resistant to penicillin, 60 isolates $(93.8\%)$ to ampicillin, 35 isolates $(54.7\%)$ to erythromycin, 32 isolates $(50.0\%)$ to gentamycin, 22 isolates $(34.4\%)$ to tetracycline and 20 isolates $(31.3\%)$ to oxacillin. All of S. aureus isolates were susceptible to chloramphenicol and vancomycin, 20 isolates $(31.3\%)$ were methicillin-resistance S. aureus (MRSA). MRSA isolation rate was higher in male $(35.7\%)$ than female $(26.3\%)$. With the exception of two isolates which were resistant only to penicillin, sixty-one isolates were multiple antibiotic resistance.

Monitoring of Quality Characteristics and Harmful Substances in Commercial Handmade Soap (유통 수제비누의 품질특성 및 유해물질 모니터링)

  • A total of 81 handmade soaps on sale on the market were collected from January to November 2022. To compare quality characteristics, all ingredients were referred to, and the pH, dry reduction, heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, antimony, and mercury), and contents of free alkali were measured. All soaps had a slightly alkaline pH of 7.9 to 11.2, average drying loss was 17.6%, and free alkali was hardly detected. The average values of all heavy metals were 0.104 ㎍/g for lead, 0.035 ㎍/g for arsenic, 0.002 ㎍/g for cadmium, 0.048 ㎍/g for antimony, and 0.0003 ㎍/g for mercury. The results of handmade soap were below the recommended in regulations on safety standards for cosmetics of Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.

Molecular Characterization and Phylogenetic Analysis of Season Influenza Virus Isolated in Busan during the 2006-2008 Seasons (부산지역에서 유행한 계절인플루엔자바이러스의 유전자 특성 및 계통분석('06-'08 절기))

  • To monitor newly emerged influenza virus variants and to investigate the prevalence pattern, our laboratory performed isolation of the viruses from surveillance sentinel hospitals. In the present study, we analysed influenza A/H1N1, A/H3N2, B viruses isolated in Busan during the 2006/07 and 2007/08 seasons by sequence analysis of the hemagglutinin (HA1 subunit) and neuraminidase (NA) genes. The isolates studied here were selected by the stratified random sample method from a total of 277 isolates, in which 15 were A/H1N1, 16 were A/H3N2 and 29 were B. Based on the phylogenetic tree, the HA1 gene showed that A/H1N1 isolates had a 96.7% to 97.7% homology with the A/Brisbane/59/2007, A/H3N2 isolates had a 98.4% to 99.7% homology with the A/Brisbane/10/2007, and B isolates had a 96.5% to 99.7% homology with the B/Florida/4/2006(Yamagata lineage), which are all the vaccine strains for the Northern Hemisphere in 2008~2009 season. In the case of the NA gene, A/H1N1 isolates had 97.8% to 98.5% homologies, A/H3N2 isolates had 98.9% to 99.4% homologies, and B isolates had 98.9% to 100% homologies with each vaccine strain in the 2008~2009 season, respectively. Characterization of the hemagglutinin gene revealed that amino acids at the receptor-binding site and N-linked glycosylation site were highly conserved. These results provide useful information for the control of influenza viruses in Busan and for a better understanding of vaccine strain selection.

  • Recently, public libraries as complex cultural spaces are becoming a trend, and public libraries as complex facilities that are built in one building or one site are being highlighted. This can be seen as part of a policy to expand public libraries as part of the government's Living SOC project. The establishment of libraries in government office is also included in this movement. Therefore, this study presented excellent cases by investigating the current state of government office in Korea and investigated citizens' perception on the establishment of public libraries in Busan Metropolitan City Hall. Based on this, a basic plan for the operation of public libraries in Busan Metropolitan City Hall, including basic directions, organization and manpower, collection development, and service programs (including specialization program), was proposed.

A Study on Water Environment and Benthic Macroinvertebrate Community in Reclaimed Wastewater Effluent Dominated Stream (하수처리수 방류 하천의 물환경과 저서성 대형무척추동물 군집 생태 연구)

  • Water quality, benthic macroinvertebrate communities, and other factors were investigated to explore the effects of the effluent discharge from a sewage treatment plant into Jwagwang stream in Busan in 2019. During the study period, the flow rate of this stream was in the range of 10,400 m3/day to 52,200 m3/day except for the discharge of about 24,000 m3/day of the effluent. After discharge, the flow velocity increased by about 65% and the water depth increased by about 40%. At sites downstream of the discharge point, BOD, COD, TOC, T-N, T-P, and other water quality values were worse than those of the upstream sites. The periphytic algal chlorophyll-a concentrations in the natural substrata were higher than those of the upstream sites, especially in May and August. However, at sites downstream of the discharge point, the individual numbers of Annelida were decreased and individual numbers of the insecta of arthropoda were increased. Also, species numbers and the diversity and dominance indexes were improved in the sites downstream of the discharge point. The functional feeding groups (FFGs) of collector-filterers were increased and the habitat orientation groups (HOGs) of sprawlers, burrowers, and clingers were especially increased at the sites with additional reclaimed wastewater effluent flow. Regardless of the effluent discharge, BMI, an indicator of ecological stream health using benthic macroinvertebrate species, did not show large gaps between the study points. Although the water quality of the sites downstream of the discharge point was much worse than those upstream, their ecosystem soundness was better than those of the upstream sites from an ecological perspective.

Effects of Planting Date on the Growth and Yield of Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) in Rain Shielding Vinyl House of Busan Area (부산지역에서의 오크라 비가림재배시 정식시기가 생육 및 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • The experiment was carried out to examine the effect of planting date on the growth and marketable yield on rain shielding vinyl house in Busan area. Okra cultivars were 'Jukokra', 'Greensod', 'Marumichang', 'Betafive' and 'Akamarumichang'. Planting date were June and July. Plant height, stem length and leaf width were significantly different between various cultivars. Plant height and stem length were best at 'Akamarumichang' among all cultivars tested and the 'Betafive' cultivars showed the lowest plant growth of June treatment. There was no significant difference in planting of July treatment. Marketable yield of okra fruit was affected by planting date. In case of June planting date, 'Betafive' cultivars produced the highest marketable yield (4,286 kg/10a) in green fruit. Marketable yield of green okra fruit was increased at 'Betafive' and 'Greensod' cultivars, whereas 'Marumichang' cultivars was lowerd. Therefore, the optimum planting date was considered June planting in rain shielding culture of okra in Busan area.

Dietary risk assessment for suspected endocrine disrupting pesticides in agricultural products in Busan, Korea (부산지역 유통 농산물의 내분비계 장애추정농약 위해평가)

  • Studies on suspected endocrine disrupting pesticide (EDP) residues in agricultural products were carried out in 2016 in Busan, Korea. Twelve different EDPs, ranging in concentration between 0.003-2.049 mg/kg, were detected in 19.5% of 462 samples. About 0.2% of agricultural product samples exceeded the maximum residue limits (MRLs). Risk indices of all of the EDPs were less than 10% of the acceptable daily intake (ADI). The outcomes indicated that the risk groups at highest risk of exposure to diazinon (found in Korean cabbages) and carbendazim (found in apples) were females aged 40 to 49 and young males less than 10 years old, respectively. Based on the stochastic assessment at $95^{th}$ percentile (P95), risk index in these risk groups accounted for 8.38 and 2.98% of ADIs. The results showed that the occurrence of EDP residues in agricultural products could not be considered a public health problem.
