  • The purpose of this research study is to find factors associated with burnout in social workers in public sector. This study examined the impact of social support and job-related tension on burnout of social workers in public sector. A participant of 300 social workers in public sector were recruited from Inchen city and completed the questionnaires during August, 2011. Data were entered into simple regression and hierarchical multiple regression analyses. First, women had a little higher mean score of burnout than men. However, this was not a statistically significant difference. Job Classification and year of work experiences were very important predictors for burn-out of social workers in public sector. Second, there was a strong positive relationship between job-related tension and burnout. Third, there was a strong negative relationship between social support and burnout. As the perception about social support by social workers increased, the level of burnout tended to decrease. Finally, the set of analyses examined the impact of social support after controlling for effects of demographic variables and job-related tension. Perceived social support, job-related tension made a significant contribution in burnout. The results of this research study provide several implications for social work practices. More research is needed regarding the effects of social support and job-related tension on burnout of social workers in public sector. For social works in public sector, supervision from supervisors appeared to have a protective effect against social workers' burnout.

The data in the study were collected from 132 workers who work for job center in Busan, Ulsan, Gimhae, and Jinhae, and Self-Estimate Inventory, Emotional Labor Scale, Social Support Scale, and Maslach Burnout Inventory were used. This shows that self efficacy has an meaningful influence on job center workers' psychological burnout. Second, it also found a correlation between job center workers' emotional labor and psychological burnout, with higher emotional labor being more burnout. However, multiple regression analysis indicates that frequency of emotional display, attentiveness to required display rule, and emotional dissonance which are sub-factors of emotional labor have a negative influence on psychological burnout. Third, it found a correlation between job center workers' social support and psychological burnout, with higher social support being less burnout. Among sub-factors of social support, material support and evaluative support have a meaningful influence on psychological burnout statistically. Fourth, it showed that self efficacy has a high influence on psychological burnout. This research suggests to provide basic materials which are a great help to study job center worker's psychological burnout, and proposes to arrange various program for developing human resources of job center as a public employment organization.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the relationships between job stress, stress coping strategies, empathy ability, and burnout in social workers at long-term care facilities. Data was collected from 201 social workers in three cities from March to May 2020 using structured questionnaires. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlations, and hierarchical multiple regression. Results showed that burnout significantly differed according to age, marital status, and career among the general characteristics. In the relationships between major variables, burnout showed a significant positive correlation with job stress and showed significant negative correlations with stress coping strategies and empathy ability. The major factors affecting burnout were job stress and empathy ability, which explained 72.3% of the variance. The results of this study suggest that job stress and empathy ability are important factors for burnout. Findings indicate a need to decrease job stress and increase empathy ability to prevent the burnout of social workers. Further studies are needed to examine burnout prevention strategies for social workers.

  • This study has been performed to investigate group differences and determining factors of burnout of the workers in elderly living facilities. In this study, 131 male and female workers composed of social workers, health practitioners, and other management workers were selected among 23 retirement and nursing facilities in Korea between 2003 and 2005. They were asked about their socioeconomic background, working environment, and their perceptions on burnout in the working places. As for main dimensions of the burnout, there were three elements such as emotional weariness, diminishing personal accomplishment, and depersonalized behaviors. Particularly in this study, the depersonalized behaviors were defined as aggressive or rude verbal and behavioral outbursts from anger. As a result of this study, the following results were found: Most workers have medium level of perception on their commitment and burnout, but there. are some risk factors; newly married young workers were less satisfied or fairly rewarded with their job and as a result, they have significantly higher level of emotional weariness but lower feeling of personal accomplishments. In addition, they occasionality practiced aggressive or rude behaviors such as yelling, threatening, and physically harassing As for the influence of determining variables, long-time workers of long established facilities were more satisfied and less burnout. In addition, there are some impacts of job category; health practitioners were more burnout than social workers. In this study, suggestions are made as follows: first, guiding and settlement programs should be developed for the newly started young married workers, particularly at early stage of their career. Second, future aspects of facility visions should be guided for the workers, so that they are relieved from stressful routines without any future plan. Third, medical workers such as physical therapists and nurses should be further monitored for main reasons of increasing their stress.

Major themes of the research included examining risk or protective factors, consequences of burnout, mechanisms of burnout, mediating effects of burnout on certain relationships, and subjective experience of social workers' burnout. As for methodologies used, quantitative approach was predominant. Findings of this study suggested research effort to extend scope of research subjects and methodology. Testifying more burnout-related factors would contribute to the future research as well. The results of the study will provide academic implications for future research in this field.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the influences of coping strategies and vocational self-efficacy on burnout among social workers in long-term care hospitals. Using a convenience sample, researchers collected responses from 138 participants in those long-term care hospitals that have at least 100 sick beds among 528 hospitals(as of September 2015) registered as members of the Korean Association of Geriatric Hospitals. Multiple regression analyses revealed that working hours, externalizing strategies, vocational self-efficacy and group efficacy were significantly correlated with burnout of social workers. In other words, longer working hours led to higher degrees of burnout and higher levels of externalizing strategies, job efficacy, and group efficacy led to lower degrees of burnout in job performance. Based on the study results, it was discussed to relieve the extent of burnout among social workers in long-term care hospitals such as reinforcement of systematic supervision, development of burnout prevention program and on-the job training.
