  • Direct numerical simulation is conducted to observe the behavior of microbubbles in isotropic turbulence. Navier-Stokes equation and the motion of equation for microbubbles are solved with periodic boundary condition in a cube domain. Vorticity contour, enstrophy ratio, relative reduction of bubble rise velocity, and the closest distance of particles are investigated for various Stokes numbers and gravity factors to understand clustering of microbubbles. Also, clustering due to the effect of the lift force is investigated.

  • Structure of the counterflow nonpremixed flames were investigated by using Fire Dynamics Simulator(FDS) and OPPDIF to evaluate FDS for simulations of the diffusion flame. FDS, employed a mixture fraction formulation, were applied to the diluted axisymmetric methane-air nonpremixed counterflow flames. Fuel concentration in the mixture of methane and nitrogen was considered as a numerical parameter in the range from 20% to 100% increasing by 10% by volume at the global strain rates of $a_g = 20S^{-l} and 80S^{-1}$ respectively. In all the computations, the gravity was set to zero since OPPDIF is not able to compute the buoyancy effects. It was shown by the axisymmetric simulation of the flames with FDS that increasing fuel concentration increases the flame thickness and decreases the flame radius. The centerline temperature and axial velocity, and the peek flame temperature showed good agreement between the both methods.

  • The airship is starting to receive new highlights as a stable floating platform. A floating platform can serve as a telecommunication relay station or an environmental outpost. Much of these operations require unmanned autonomous operation on the airship. Due to difficulties in modelling and identifying the airship, controlling the airship is not an easy task. Different from the normal aircraft, the airship is affected by "added mass" and buoyancy. The added mass is the additional mass felt required to move the object in a fluid. As we are searching for a stable floating platform, controlling the airship to keep station is critical. We use a simple airship model with added mass for simulation. Classical controller is used to find acceptable airship performances.

  • This paper presents a new control scheme using a sliding mode controller with a multilayer neural network for the robot manipulator operating under the sea which has large uncertainties such as the buoyancy and the added mass/moment of inertia. The multilayer neural network using the error back propagation loaming algorithm acts as a compensator of the conventional sliding mode controller to improve the control performance when the initial assumptions of uncertainty bounds are not valid. Computer simulation results show that the proposed control scheme gives an effective path way to cope with the unexpected large uncertainties in the underwater robot manipulator.

  • Numerical analysis was applied to a simplified two-dimensional Ondol heating model which consists of heating space on the top of it along with radiant and convective heating floor panel, flue channel in the midway and rectangular underground soil region at the bottom. These three components constitute a system thermally coupled at the top and bottom interfaces of the flue channel. Investigated in the present paper are effects with variations of the Reynolds numbers of 100, 200, and 300, Grashof numbers of $0.1{\times}10^6$ and $0.3{\times}10^6$ and aspect ratios of 15 and 20 on the heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics of two-dimensional Ondol heating model by computer simulation.

  • In this study, analysis of water mist behavior is performed using numerical simulation. Water mist is characterized by the droplet flow which is one of the multiphase flows and is discrete fluid droplets in continuous air. It is important to choose the proper diameter of droplet-size and the distance between the fire location and the position of water mist because it depends on the buoyancy from fire. Therefore the behavior of water mist with fire should be simulated by FLUENT, a commercial computational fluid dynamics(CFD) program, with Lagrangian discrete phase model. (DPM)

  • Initial mixing characteristics in near field regions were analyzed by FLOW-3D, for analyzing mixing behavior of submerged discharge from freshwater lake in sea water. FLOW-3D model was applied to the region near Geum-ho dike for its verification. Simulation results from FLOW-3D were compared to the observed data for the verification periods. FLOW-3D showed resonable prediction results compared to the observed data, except underestimation in area near outfall. Particularly, FLOW-3D showed a good prediction for movement of buoyancy jets. In addition, FLOW-3D model was applied to the region near Saemangeum dike, which is to be constructed in near future. It was expected that the results of model application to Saemangeum area could provide substantial information in planning submerged discharge facilities. Based on the model applications to Saemangeum area, it was recommended that outfall should be located to the distance which gave an enough depth of outfall from water surface.

  • A numerical investigation of the constrained melting of phase change materials within spherical-like capsule is presented. A single-domain enthalpy formulation is used for simulation of the phase change phenomenon. The solution methodology is verified with the melting process inside an isothermal spherical capsule. Especially, the effect of capsule shape on the heat storage is emphasized. Two shape parameters are considered from the real capsule shape showing good characteristics of heat storage and the effect of these parameters is examined. Early during the melting process, the conduction mode of heat transfer is dominant. Thus the capsule shape with large surface area is desirable. However, the capsule shape with large surface area plays negative role on the strength of buoyancy-driven convection that becomes more important as melting continues.

  • This paper addresses a robust controller design technique for a nonlinear underwater glider with disturbances. We consider the buoyancy and pitching moment as control inputs, which generate additional nonlinearity on the plant dynamics. To deal with the nonlinearity, we utilize the optimal linearization technique. The conditions for the optimal linearization and the controller design are formulated in terms of matrix inequalities. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through a simulation.
