In the initial design stage, the geometry of systems needs to be optimized regarding its performance. However, performance analysis is very time-consuming. Therefore, optimization becomes difficult/impossible problems because we need to evaluate the system performance for alternative design cases. To overcome this problem, many researchers perform prediction of system performance using the approximation model. The response surface method (RSM) is typically used to predict the system performance in the various research fields, but it presents prediction errors for highly nonlinear systems. The major objective of this paper is to propose a proper prediction method for marine system problems. Case studies of marine systems (the substructure of a floating offshore wind turbine considering hydrodynamic performance and bulk carrier bottom stiffened panels considering structure performance) verify that the proposed method is applicable to performance prediction in marine systems.
In the North Pacific Ocean a lot of large waves set up in winter, affected by continued winds and swells owing to severe extratropical cyclones. Under this sea condition, if the ship is about 100,000L/T (in deadweight capacity tonnage), we can't find the danger involved in the ship at sea apparently. But when we compare the seaworthiness of ship's building strength with the stress given to the hull by waves, we can't insist that the former be more stronger than the latter. As a result, VLCC is in danger of destroying and cutting for lack of longitudinal strength in heavy weather. Up to this time, Naval Architects have actively studied the relation between ship's longitudinal strength and waves as a ship's projector; however, actually, they have never made more profound study on the problem of longitudinal strength in relation to navigation. The main puprpose of this thesis is to clarify these vivid actual states of ship's trouble unknown to ship's masters. In this thesis we picked up VLCC Pan Yard, a vessel of Pan Ocean Bulk Carrier company's, as a model ship. And in the North Pacific Ocean, we have chosen for this research the basins where the wind speed and the wave height are greater than average. The data used this thesis are quotes from the "winds and waves of the North Pacific Ocean('64-'73)", and wind speed more than 30 knots was made use of as an ocject of this study. By usinh the ITTC wave spectrum, we found out the significant waves for every 5 knots within the range of 20 knots to 45 knots of wind speed. According to this H1/1000 was calculated. The stress of ship's hull is determined by ship's speed and wave height. We compared the ship's longitudinal strength with a planned wave height by rules of several famous classification societies in the world. In the last analysis, we found out that ship's present planned strength in heavy weather is not enough. Finally we made a graph for avoiding heavy weather, with which we studied safe ship's handling in the North pacafic Ocean in winter.

This study suggests the minimum critical external forces based on the assessment of anchoring safety to single anchor situation for representative 8 number of ships in E-group anchorage of Ulsan port. Assessment of anchoring safety is compared holding powers of anchor with external forces of wind, wave and current. Holding powers was reflected materials of seabed, equipment numbers regarding anchor and chain weight, also external forces acting on a hull was calculated considering projected wind area and wetted surface area to the full and ballast conditions respectively. The results of anchoring safety assessments to single anchor showed that the minimum criteria of dragging anchor is a little different from ship's type, size and loading conditions. Bulk carrier can be dragged over the 15m/s of winds and Tanker can be dragged over the 13m/s of winds in case of less than 2knots of currents speed.

In this study, we studied and analyzed 3,751 ships regarding detention list of Tokyo MOU from 2013 to 2015 total for 36 months. The Member Authorities of the MOU has 20 committee consists of Korea and Peru joined in 2015. 1,250 ships in a year and 140 ships in a month are granted PSC Action Code-30 corresponding to detention. Averagely, 30,943 ships in a year and 2,579 ships have been received PSC inspection. Additionally, according to this PSC inspection, rate of Detention reaches to 4.04%. When it comes to Korean Flag Ships however, the number of Detention ships of Tokyo MOU has been rather increased from 3 ships in 2013 to 18 ships during 2years. Furthermore, MOU in the all over the world, the number of ships had Detention has largely increased from 5 ships to 9 up-to 19ships. The number of Detention Ships has been reached to 44.8% of 1~2 days period of Detentions, under 3~10 days period of Detentions reaches to 34.7% and over 10 days detention reaches 10.3%, which cause economically enormous loss. Continually, each MOU has been implemented Concentrated Inspection Campaign(CIC) annually. Each MOU including Tokyo MOU implemented "Crew Familiarization for Enclosed Space Entry" for 3 month from september, and During this period, Concentrated Inspection were carried out to 8,429 ships of Tokyo MOU. Accordingly, If ships and owners can get the information of CIC and deliver the information to the ship, then Ships can minimize the rate of Detention by thoroughly preparing for PSC Inspection. In addition, Bulk Carrier and General Cargo ship occupy 50% of rate of Detention and it shows that majority of list among Nature of Deficiencies are identical. Finally, If we can obtain the information of the ships inspected previously, We can reduce the number of detention by preparing for PSC inspection. And this will be able to contribute to shipping industry also.

This study is about ship horsepower prediction of machine learning method using the big data of ship. Currently, new ships use the ISO15016 method to predict external environmental resistance through mathematical equations but due to complicated equations and requires many input variables so it is less applicable to be used in ship. In this recent research, we propose a model capable of predicting ship performance with high performance using SVM (Support Vector Machine) algorithm which shows excellent performance in recent prediction and recognition. The proposed predictive model has the advantage of being able to predict better performance than ISO15016 only if secured big data is used. In this study, we compared the ISO15016 technique and the SVM algorithm-based horsepower analysis method using the 178K bulk carrier's voyage data to reduce ship model data preparation, which is a disadvantage of ISO15016, and improve inaccurate horsepower prediction performance.
Carmustine (l,3-bis(2-chloroethyI)-1-nitrosourea, BICNU) used as antineoplastic drug for the treatment of brain tumor is not appropriate for the long term delivery, because it has short biological half life. Therefore, poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) is useful as drug carrier for the long term delivery due to bulk erosion property. Glycolide monomer is applied to release of BICNU owing to non-toxic and monomeric components after biodegradation of PLGA. In this study, BICNU-loaded PLGA wafers with or without glycolide monomer were fabricated by conventional direct compression method for the sustained release of BICNU. These wafers were observed for their release profiles of BICNU and degradation rates by SEM, NMR, and GPC. Furthermore, we make multi-layer wafers and compare them with release profiles of conventional wafer. From these results, drug release of BICNU-loaded PLGA wafers was increased with increasing the glycolid monomer contents. We confirmed that glycolide monomer and BICNU contents in barrier-layer influenced the drug release profiles and degradation rate.

Semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dots (NQDs) have recently attracted considerable interest for use in photovoltaics. Band gaps of NQDs can be tuned over a considerable range by varying the particle size thereby allowing enhance absorption of solar spectrum. NQDs, synthesized using colloidal routes, are solution processable and promise for a large-area fabrication. Recent advancements in multiple-exciton generation in NQD solutions have afforded possible efficiency improvements. Various architectures have attempted to utilize the NQDs in photovoltaics, such as NQD-sensitized solar cell, NQD-bulk-heterojuction solar cell and etc. Here we have fabricated CdSe NQDs with the band gap of 1.8 eV to 2.1 eV on thin-layers of p-type organic crystallites (1.61 eV) to realize a donor-acceptor type heterojuction solar cell. Simple structure as it was, we could control the interface of electrode-p-layer, and n-p-layer and monitor the following efficiency changes. Specifically, surface molecules adsorbed on the NQDs were critical to enhance the carrier transfer among the n-layer where we could verify by measuring the photo-response from the NQD layers only. Further modifying the annealing temperature after the deposition of NQDs on p-layers allowed higher conversion efficiencies in the device.

Solution processed organic photovoltaic devices have relatively less attention compared to polymer photovoltaic devices even though they have high possibility to be developed because they have both advantages of polymer and organic, such as solution processable, no synthetic batch dependence of photovoltaic performance, high purity and high charge carrier mobility as well as relatively high efficiency (~7%). In addition, solution processed organic photovoltaic devices have an advantage of easiness to study the relationship between the molecular structure and photovoltaic performance due to its simple structure. In this work, five isoindigo based low band gap donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) small molecules with different electron donating strength were synthesized for investigating the relationship between the molecular structure and photovoltaic performance, especially, investigating the effects of different electron donating effect of donor group in isoindigo backbone to photovoltaic device performance. The variation of electron donating strength of donor group strongly affected the optical, thermal, electrochemical and photovoltaic device performances of isoindigo organic materials. The highest power conversion efficiency of ~3.2% was realized in bulk heterojuction photovoltaic device consisted of the ID3T as donor and PC70BM as acceptor. This work demonstrates the great potential of isoindigo moieties as electron deficient units as well as guideline for synthesis of donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) small molecules for realizing highly efficient solution processed organic photovoltaic devices.

Bottom plates of empty hold are subjected to not only water pressure but also bi-axial inplane loads, specially in the alternate full loading full loading condition of bulk carrier. This kind of plate behaviours is very difficult to be explained and to be estimated using common buckling design guide in the initial design stage of hull structure, therefore, some more concrete studies for this plate structure was performed based on the currently developed buckling estimation formula. In this buckling formula, torsional stiffness effects of edge stiffener are included additionally and effects of elastic buckling strength of plate panel are treated as characteristic value problem. Also considering boundary stiffener effects and inplane and lateral loading, evaluation of bottom plate scantling using this formula, calculated results using various classification regulation of buckling strength and results of first report approach are compared each other and useful guides using developed formula for bottom plate scantling design are discussed.

In the present study, the model-scale Propeller Open Water (POW) tests for the propeller of 176K bulk carrier and 8600TEU container ship were conducted through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation. In order to solve the incompressible viscous flow field, the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RaNS) equations were employed as the governing equations. The γ-Reθ(gamma-Re-theta) transition model combined with the SST k-ωturbulence model was introduced to describe the laminar-turbulence transition considering the low Reynolds number of model-scale. Firstly, the flow simulation developing over a flat plate was performed to verify the transition modeling, in which the wall shear stresses were compared with experiments and other numerical results. Then, to investigate the effect of the model, the CFD simulation for the POW test was performed and the simulated propeller performance was validated through comparison with the experiment conducted at Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO).
