  • The hardness and elastic modulus of three bulk materials are computed from the load and displacement data which are measured during basic nanoindentation test and compared with values determined by independent means to assess the accuracy of the method. The results show that with this technique, modulus and hardness and elastic modulus profile through depth of silicon nitride and silicon oxynitride films. The results show that for silicon nitride film deposited on silicon, hardness and elastic modulus increase as the volume ratio of NH3 : SiH4, which had been used for deposition, increases up to 20.0; and for silicon oxynitride film on silicon, the hardness and elastic modulus profile changes distinctly as the relative amount of oxygen in deposition gas mixture changes.

  • Young's modulus of electroplated nickel thin film is systematically investigated using the resonance method of atomic force microscope. Thin layers of nickel to be measured are electroplated onto the surface of an AFM silicon cantilever and Young's modulus of plated nickel film is investigated as a function of process conditions such as the plating temperature and applied current density. It is found that Young's modulus of plated nickel thin film is as high as that of bulk nickel at low plating temperature or low current density, but decreases with increasing plating temperature or current density. The results imply that the plating rate increases as increasing the plating temperature or current density, therefore, slow plating rate produces a dense plating material due to the sufficient time fur nickel ions to form a dense coating.

  • Polycrystalline ZrH2 in tetragonal crystal system has been compressed in a modified Bassett-type diamond anvil cell up to 36.0 GPa at room temperature. X-ray diffraction data did not indicate any phase transitions at the present pressure range. The pressure dependence of the a-axis, c-axis, c/a and molar volume of ZrH2 was determined at pressures up to 36.0 GPa. Assuming the pressure derivative of the bulk modulus (K0') to be 4.11 from an ultrasonic value on Zr, bulk modulus (K0) was determined to be 160Gpa by fitting the pressure-volume data to the Birch-Murnaghan equation of state. Same sample was heated at $500^{\circ}C$ at the pressure of 9.8 GPa in a modified Sung-type diamond anvil cell. Unloaded and quenched sample revealed that the original tetragonal structure transforms into a hexagonal structured phase with a zero-pressure molar volume change of ~115.5%.

  • As an effort to explore the effective use of carbon nanotubes as a reinforcing material for advanced nano-composites with polymer matrices, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were successfully incorporated into polystyrene (PS) via in-situ bulk polymerization. Various experimental techniques revealed that the covalent bonds formed between PS radicals and acid-treated carbon nanotubes are favorable resulting in an effective load transfer. The enhanced storage modulus of the nanocomposites suggests a strong possibility for the potential use in industrial applications.

  • A simulation method is proposed to study the amorphous structure of carbon nitride. The material properties of a non-uniform nitrogen distribution in an amorphous CN matrix can be studied. The cohesive energy of a group of randomly generated atoms can be minimized to find the relative positions of atoms. From the calculated configuration of atoms, many properties of amorphous carbon nitride can be calculated such as bulk modulus, P-V curve, sp$^3$/sp$^2$ ratio of carbon, and vibrational spectra. The calculation shows that the cohesive energy of non-uniform nitrogen distribution is lower than that of a uniform distribution. This may suggest that the regular structure of carbon nitride can at most be metastable. It is not easy to incorporate nitrogen atoms into a carbon matrix.

  • In this study, the back-drivability of the single-rod and double-rod type EHAs (Electro-Hydrostatic Actuators) was compared by computer simulation and experiments. The back-drivability of EHAs exhibit non-linear behavior like their force tracking performance. In case of the double-rod type EHA, the back-drivability was mostly influenced by the bulk modulus of oil that changes with the working pressure due to entrapped air. The back-drivability of the single-rod type EHA was directly affected by the operation states of its pilot-operated check valves, while the asymmetrical piston geometry and the non-linear bulk modulus of oil also made the dynamic response in building up the cylinder pressure dependent on the operating conditions.

  • Three kinds of 135D/108F ITY were produced from raw yam 85D/72F + SDY 50D/36F with. interlacing pressure $1.5kg/cm^2$, $2.5kg/cm^2$, $3.5kg/cm^2$ respectively. 72 kinds of sized yams were manufactured from three ITYs by altering sizing speed, sizing temperature and sizing tension. The mechanical characteristics of 72 kinds of plain fabrics which were woven using the sized yam as a warp were analyzed after scouring. The initial modulus of scoured fabric responded sensitively to the sizing speed in high tension. The WT of scoured fabric recorded the. highest1n the conditions of sizing tension 30g, and air pressure $2.5kg/cm^2$ in interlacing treatment. When sizing temperature was high, the WT value appeared low, but when sizing speed was high, the WT value was much affected by air pressure in interlacing raw yam. The MIU value of fabric according to sizing tension variations increased up to sizing tension 40g, but decreased above it. The bulk density decreased up to sizing tension 30-40g, but increased above it. In addition, the bulk density decreased as sizing temperature increased.

  • Compressional wave velocity (Vp), shear wave velocity (Vs), elastic and physical properties, and electrical resistivity for two core sediments obtained from Southeastern Yellow Sea Mud (SEYSM) were measured and computed. The sediments consist of homogeneous mud (mostly silt and clay) with shells and shell fragments. As a result, the mean grain size is uniform ($7.5-8.5{\Phi}$ throughout the core sediments. However, physical properties such as wet bulk density and porosity show slightly increasing and decreasing patterns with depth, compared to the mean grain size. The compressional (about 1475 m/s in average) and shear wave (about 60 m/s in average) velocities with depth accurately reflect the pattern of wet bulk density and porosity. Electrical resistivity is more closely correlated with compressional wave velocity than physical properties. The computed Vp/Vs and Poisson's ratios are relatively higher (more than 10) and lower (approximately 0.002) than Hamilton's (1979) data, respectively, suggesting the typical characteristics of soft and fully water-saturated marine sediments. Thus, the Vp/Vs ratio in soft and unconsolidated sediments is not likely sufficient to examine lithology and sediment properties. Relationships between the elastic constant and physical properties are correlated well. The elastic constants (Poisson's ratio, bulk modulus, shear modulus) given in this paper can be used to characterize soft marine sediments saturated with seawater.

  • In this study, we investigated the effects of Cr dopant (1.0 at% $Cr_2O_3$ sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in air) on the bulk trap (i.e. defect) and interface state levels of ZnO using dielectric functions ($Z^*$, $M^*$, $Y^*$, $\varepsilon^*$, and $tan{\delta}$), admittance spectroscopy (AS), and impedance-modulus spectroscopy (IS & MS). For the identification of the bulk trap levels, we examine the zero-biased admittance spectroscopy and dielectric functions as a function of frequency and temperature. Impedance and electric modulus spectroscopy is a powerful technique to characterize grain boundaries of electronic ceramic materials as well. As a result, three kinds of bulk defect trap levels were found below the conduction band edge of ZnO in 1.0 at% Cr-doped ZnO (Cr-ZnO) as 0.11 eV, 0.21 eV, and 0.31 eV. The overlapped defect levels ($Zn^{..}_i$ and $V^{\cdot}_0$) in admittance spectra were successfully separated by the combination of dielectric function such as $M^*$, $\varepsilon^*$, and $tan{\delta}$. In Cr-ZnO, the interfacial state level was about 1.17 eV by IS and MS. Also we measured the resistance ($R_{gb}$) and capacitance ($C_{gb}$) of grain boundaries with temperature using impedance-modulus spectroscopy. It have discussed about the stability and homogeneity of grain boundaries using distribution parameter ($\alpha$) simulated with the Z"-logf plots with temperature.
