  • The dynamic characteristics of industrial processes frequently cause an abnormal situation which is undesirable in terms of the productivity and the safety of workers. The goal of fault-tolerance is to continue performing certain activities even after the failure of some system cononents. A fault-tolerant intelligent monitoring and control system which is robust under disturbances is proposed in this paper. Specifically, the fault-tolerant monitoring scheme proposed consists of two process models and the inference module to preserve such a robustness. The results of turning experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the fault-tolerant scheme in the presence of built-up edge.

  • Built-up edge affects the surface integrity of the machined surface and tool wear. Tool geometry and cutting conditions are very important factors to remove BUE. In this paper, we optimized the geometry of the metal slitting saw .1nd cutting conditions to remove BUE by the experiment. In general, the metal slitting saw is plain milling cutter with thickness less of a 3/16 inch. This is used for cutting workpiece where high dimensional accuracy and surface finish are necessary. The experiment was planned with Taguchi method that is based on the orthogonal array of design factors(coating, rake angle, number of tooth, cutting speed, feed rate). Response table was made by the value of the surface roughness, the optimized tool geometry and cutting conditions through response table could be determined. In addition. the relative effect of factors were identified by the variance analysis. filially. coating and cutting speed turned out important factors.

A Study on the In-process Detection of Fracture of Endmill by Acoustic Emission Measurement (음향방출을 이용한 가공중의 엔드밀 파손 검출에 관한 연구)

  • Automatic monitoring of the cutting conditions is one of the most improtant technologies in machining. In this study, the feasibility in applying acoustic emission(AE) signals for the in-process detection of endmill wear and fracture has been investigated by performing experimental test on the NC vertical milling machine with SM45C for specimen. As the results of detecting and analyzing AE signals on various cutting conditions, the followings have confirmed. (1) The RMS value of acoustic emission is related sensitively to the cutting velocity, but is not affected largely by feed rate. (2) The burst type AE signals of high level have been observed when removing chips distorderly and discontinuously. (3) When the RMS value grows up rapidly due to the increase of wear the endmill are generally broken or fractured, but when the endmills fracture at the conditions of smooth chip-flow or built-up-edge(BUE) occurred frequently, the rapid change of the RMS arenot found. And it is expected that this technigue will be quite useful for in-process sensing of tool wear and fracture.

A Study on the Machinability of High Strength Steel with Internally Cooled Cutting Tool (공구내부냉각에 의한 고장력합금강의 피삭성에 관한 연구)

  • High strength steel is similar to carbon steel in its composition. This material is developed originally for special uses such as aerospace and automobile due to its high strength and shock-free property in spite of lightness. But the chemical attraction of high strength steel is serious, which includes comminution of formation, metalization and strengthening. Machining results in built-up edge between this material and the tool. Especially the work hardening behavior results in tool life shortening, which was caused by temperature generation during machining. In this study, cooling system was made in which liquid nitrogen is supplied to circulate in order to make up for these weaknesses. Machining of high strength steels, which is recognized as difficult to machine materials, was conducted after tool is cooled at -195$\circ$C. Experimental results showed that the tool was cooled down rapidly below -195$\circ$C in about 200 seconds. The tool temperature of machining with cooling system was lowered by 60~95$\circ$C than that of machining in room temperature. The hardness of the surface of chip is decreased by machining with cooling system. And the machining using the cooling system made it possible to increase shear angle, to retain smooth surface on chip without built-up-edge and to get a better roughness.

  • Gas wiping process of continuously hot-dip galvanized coating on steel strip has noise and coating problems. To improve the qualify of product, characteristics of air flow on the steel surface must be investigated. In this paper, fluid dynamic model of the gas flow is setup and solved numerically using STAR-CD. The effects of edge baffle, distance between steel plane edge and baffle, inlet pressure, and gap between air knife and strip steel surface are investigated, and it is concluded that edge baffle can reduce over-coating and edge built-up.

A Study on the Turning of SCM440 Hardened Steel (SCM440 경화 처리강의 선삭저항에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper hardened SCM440 material and annealed SCM440 material are for cutting experiments by the cutting con-dition which is chosen respectively by tool three components of cutting force are recorded using multicorder, Then the surface roughness for various force are measured by Roughness Tester. The results of the experiment are summarized as follow. The hardened material cut by ceramic tool(BX20) gives the highest radial component values among the cutting resistance radial components is increased higher for the higher cutting speed even though vertical component and axial component tend to decrease. But when the annealed material was cut increase in cutting speed results in the increase of three component forces. Since ceramic insert tip used the experiment hardly affect Built-up Edge and heat the cutting resistance decrease slightly regardless of the increased of cutting speed. The hardened material has higher three compo-nent force value than the annealed material because the material of high hardness is increased cutting resistance. The low-est cutting forces for hardened material and annealed material are shown in the cutting speed of 60m/min and 180m/min. respectively.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish a standard for proper selection of water soluble cutting fluids, such as Emulsion type, Semi-Synthetic type and synthetic type, by investigating cutting effects at the normal temperature(26$\circ$C) and cooling temperature(0$\circ$C) from the viewpoint of cooling and lubricant actions. This paper describes a relation among cutting force, surface roughness and cooled water soluble cutting fluids which are considered as effective restraints on Built up edge.

A Study on Light Weight Hood Design for Pedestrian Safety (보행자 충돌안전 경량후드 형상설계에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, first, child headform model was built up, satisfying requirement in the headform validation test. Also, for decreasing both acceleration peak and deformation, a new hood with dome shaped forming in inner panel was investigated. Next, headform impact, complying with draft of EEVC W/G 17, on the central portion of the newly proposed hood were simulated for a steel hood and three aluminum hoods with different thickness for examining the material and thickness effect on HIC value and inner panel deformation. The analysis results explained that aluminum hoods with dome shaped forming in inner panel were highly promising not only for meeting headform safety regulations but also for leading to weight savings. Finally, hood edge design technology in order to reduce pedestrian injury due to the high stiffness of beam type edge and the rigid support, was discussed. Various types of the foam filled edge were designed and their headform safety performance were evaluated. The edge structure with foam filled in upper one third of section exhibited excellent results.

  • Machining technology has emerged to the point of performing atomic-scale fabrication. In tail paper atomic-scale machining characteristics are investigated by using Molecular Statics simulation method. The cutting model used in this work simulates machining with tools such as an AFM. It is shown that built-up edge formation and cutting forces depend on tool tip geometry. Also, the material flow during cutting is shown for various cutting conditions such as depth of cut, rake angle, and edge radius of tool.

A Study on the Adjustment of Eaves Curve and Roof Length of Three-Bay-Kan Buddhist Temples with the Hipped and Gable Roof (정면 3칸 팔작지붕 불전의 처마 곡선과 지붕 길이 조절에 관한 연구)

  • It is difficult to build a hipped and gable roof in slender rectangular type due to restraint in variation of lateral length caused by gongpo arranged on the side, purlin space and the form of gable part and aesthetical effect of chunyeo maru. Against this backdrop and with the assumption that this phenomenon is more apparent in roofs of three-bay-kan Buddhist temples with the hipped and gable roof among national treasure Buddhist temples, this study has aimed to prove that a roof can be built in a less slender rectangular type than that of flat form and to present the building methodology and found the following findings. First, The ratio of lateral to longitudinal length of the roof has been adjusted by protruding the chunyeo and the method of adjusting the ratio of lateral to longitudinal length of the roof is considered to be determined depending on the availability of woods to be used in chunyeo. Second, in order to symmetrically arrange the edge of the roof, which is critical from the perspective of construction morphology, the chunyeo angle has been intentionally adjusted to reduce the gap of length between the front roof and the lateral roof. To sum up, the characteristic of the hipped and gable roof, which is difficult to be built in slender rectangular type, is more clearly shown in the roof and it is identified that the length of the front roof and the lateral roof has been intentionally adjusted to achieve the symmetrical arrangement of roofline of the roof edge.
