National Geographic Institute recently has produced a national paper map by means of a computer aided editing system using a national digital map 2.0. However, the map generalization should be made due to the portrayal difference between the digital map and the paper one and the criterion of the map generalization should be determined by the visual image. The tolerance limit of the map generalization has to be decided based on human vision. For this purpose, this study attempts to measure the size of the building on various scale map and then analyze its result. As a consequence, this study shows us that the building size eligible for human vision should be over 0.4mm in the short side of building on the map. The tolerance limit of an isolated building, a reduced building and a densely built-up area for the map generalization is based on the criterion mentioned above.

The space between urban buildings becomes a waterway during rain events and requires a boundary condition in numerical calculations on grids to separate overland storm flows from building areas. Minimization of the building data distortion as a boundary condition is a necessary step for generating accurate calculation results. A building generalization is used to reduce the distortion of building shapes and areas during a raster conversion. The objective of this study was to provide the appropriate threshold value for building generalization and grid size in a numerical calculation. The impact of building generation on the connectivity of urban storm waterways were analyzed for a general residential area. The building generalization threshold value and the grid size for numerical analysis were selected as the independent variables for analysis, and the number and area of sinks were used as the dependent variables. The values for the building generalization threshold and grid size were taken as the optimal values to maximize the building area and minimize the sink area. With a 3 m generalization threshold, sets of $5{\times}5m$ to $10{\times}10m$ caused 5% less building area and 94.4% more sink area compared to the original values. Two sites representing general residential area types 2 and 3 were used to verify building generalization thresholds for improving the connectivity of storm waterways. It is clear that the recommended values are effective for reducing the distortion in both building and sink areas.

Urban flooding threatens human beings and facilities with chemical and physical hazards since the beginning of human civilization. Recent studies have emphasized the integration of data and models for effective urban flood inundation modeling. However, the model set-up process is tend to be time consuming and to require a high level of data processing skill. Furthermore, in spite of the use of high resolution grid data, inundation depth and velocity are varied with building treatment methods in 2-D inundation model, because undesirable grids are generated and resulted in the reliability decline of the simulation results. Thus, it requires building generalization process or enhancing building orthogonality to minimize the distortion of building before converting building footprint into grid data. This study aims to develop building generalization method for 2-dimensional inundation analysis to enhance the model reliability, and to investigate the effect of building generalization method on urban inundation in terms of geographical engineering and hydraulic engineering. As a result to improve the reliability of 2-dimensional inundation analysis, the building generalization method developed in this study should be adapted using Digital Building Model(DBM) before model implementation in urban area. The proposed building generalization sequence was aggregation-simplification, and the threshold of the each method should be determined by considering spatial characteristics, which should not exceed the summation of building gap average and standard deviation.
Many studies have been conducted on extracting buildings from ALS(Airborne Laser Scanning) data. After segmentation or classification of building points, additional steps such as generalization is required to get straight boundary lines that better approximate the real ones. In much research, orthogonal constraints are used to improve accuracies and qualities. All the lines of the building boundaries are assumed to be either parallel or perpendicular mutually. However, this assumption is not valid in many cases and more complex shapes of buildings have been increased. A new algorithm is presented that is applicable to various complex buildings. It consists of three steps of boundary tracing, grouping, and regularization. The performance of our approach was evaluated by applying the algorithm to some buildings and the results showed that our proposed method has good potential for extracting building boundaries of various shapes.

There have been many studies on extracting building boundaries from LiDAR(Light Detection And Ranging) data. In such studies, points are first segmented, then are further processed to get straight boundary lines that better approximate the real boundaries. In most research in this area, processes like generalization or regularization assume that buildings have only right angles, i.e. all the line segments of the building boundaries are either parallel or perpendicular. However, this assumption is not valid for many buildings. We present a new approach consisting of three steps that is applicable to more complex building boundaries. The three steps consist of boundary tracing, generalization, and regularization. Each step contains algorithms that range from slight modifications of conventional algorithms to entirely new concepts. Four typical building shapes were selected to test the performance of out new approach and the results were compared with digital maps. The results show that the proposed approach has good potential for extracting building boundaries of various shapes.
The concept of variable is a big idea to develop algebraic thinking. Variable has multiple meanings such as the unknown, a tool for generalization, and the relationship between varying quantities. In this study we analyzed in what ways the meanings of variable were presented in the current elementary mathematics textbooks and workbooks. The results showed that the most frequent meaning of variable was 'the unknown', 'a tool for generalization', and 'the relationship between varying quantities' in order. A close look at the results revealed that the same symbol was often used in representing different values of variable as the unknown. In taking variable as a tool for generalization, questions to provoke generalization were sometimes included not in the textbooks but in the teachers' manuals. The main focus in dealing with variable as the relationship between varying quantities was on finding out the dependent values compared to the independent ones. Building on these results, this study is expected to suggest implications for how to deal with variable concept in elementary mathematics instructional materials.

The accuracy of cost estimation at an early stage in school building project is one of the critical factors for successful completion. So various of techniques are developed to predict the construction cost accurately and expeditely. Among the techniques, Support Vector Machine(SVM) has an excellent ability for generalization performance. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to construct the prediction model for construction cost of educational building project using support vector machine technique. And to verify the accuracy of prediction model for construction cost. The performance data used in this study are 217 school building project cost which have been completed from 2004 to 2007 in Gyeonggi-Do, Korea. The result shows that average error rate was 7.48% for SVM prediction model. So using SVM model on predicting construction cost of educational building project will be a considerably effective way at the early project stage.

In the existing digital map of the Ver.1.0, it is impossible to make a small scale digital map, which is under the 1/5000 scale map, by using the 1/1000 digital map which is the most large scale one. Because of this reason, the existing digital maps are produced into a 1/1000 and a 1/5000 map by means of two different scale aerial photos. The next generation digital map should be successively related to a small scale digital map based on the most large scale digital one. This is so important from the aspects of data share and the consecutive renewal. Ever since the development of the digital map of the Ver. 2.0, the possibility of making a multi-scale consecutive digital map has been presented and the related research has been done again. The most basic thing in the multi-scale digital maps is to decide the criteria of the generalization between the two scales. In this study, I try to formulate the criteria of the generalization required to make the 1/5000 digital map by using the 111000 digital one. In addition, I by to explore the application possibility of the consecutive renewal by carrying out auto-generalization.
In Machine learning, we usually divide the entire data into training data and test data, train the model using training data, and use test data to determine the accuracy and generalization performance of the model. In the case of models with low generalization performance, the prediction accuracy of newly data is significantly reduced, and the model is said to be overfit. This study is about a method of generating training data based on central limit theorem and combining it with existed training data to increase normality and using this data to train models and increase generalization performance. To this, data were generated using sample mean and standard deviation for each feature of the data by utilizing the characteristic of central limit theorem, and new training data was constructed by combining them with existed training data. To determine the degree of increase in normality, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test was conducted, and it was confirmed that the new training data showed increased normality compared to the existed data. Generalization performance was measured through differences in prediction accuracy for training data and test data. As a result of measuring the degree of increase in generalization performance by applying this to K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Logistic Regression, and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), it was confirmed that generalization performance was improved for KNN, a non-parametric technique, and LDA, which assumes normality between model building.

Wind-induced interference effects on a building are the result of one or more adjacent buildings modifying the flow of wind around it, which may result in a significant increase or decrease in wind loads on the building. Wind loading standards and codes of practice offer little guidance to the designer for assessing the effects of interference. Experimental results on interference effects indicate that code recommendations may be significantly low (unsafe) or uneconomically conservative. The paper presents results of an extensive experimental program to study the wind flow mechanisms and to quantify the extent of wind load modifications on buildings due to interference effects. These results have been simplified and presented from the point-of-view of design and codification for the case of two buildings. Based on these results, general guidelines and limiting conditions defining wind interference are formulated and discussed.
