The hazard assessment in which the potential hazard factors In the buildings are investigated and the scale of the hazard is analyzed should be performed first in order to prevent personal and material damages due to building fire. In this study, the building fire hazard are assessed using 822-item checklist, for the qualitative evaluation of which the main factors are classified into 10 items, yielding 100 scale points with some weighting. It is shown that present model is applicable for the assessment of all general buildings through the examination of the suitability of assessment model by actual assessment of existing building. Also, the checklist is prepared in itemized questionnaire form for easy assessment of building fire hazard. Therefore, the present model will be helpful for those working in fire prevention, who are suffering from the lack of manifest evaluation model for the fire prevention assessment so far in Korea.
Building-level response to post-earthquake fire hazards in steel buildings has been assessed using primarily two-dimensional analyses of the lateral force resisting system. This approach may not adequately consider potential vulnerabilities in the gravity framing system. For this reason, three-dimensional (3D) finite element models of a 10-story case study building with perimeter moment resisting frames were developed to analyze post-earthquake fire events and better understand building response. Earthquakes are simulated using ground motion time histories, while Eurocode parametric time-temperature curves are used to represent compartment fires. Incremental dynamic analysis and incremental fire analysis procedures capture a range of hazard intensities. Findings show that the structural response due to earthquake and fire hazards are somewhat decoupled from one another. Regardless of the level of plastic hinging present in the moment framing system due to a seismic event, gravity column failure is the initiating failure mode in a fire event.
This study compared the fire safety standards for windows of Korea, the U.S. and Japan to prevent fire expansion through exterior wall openings, and conducted experiments using PVC and aluminum window frames, which are widely used in Korea. The experiment is KS F 2845 which combines frames of the same thickness and area with single-window form and 1 hour fire resistance glass with 8T thickness. Experiments showed that the PVC window was about 9 minutes and the aluminum window was about 26 minutes. However, in Korea, there are no test standards for windows installed at the opening of the exterior wall. In addition, fire safety standards for windows shall be established along with the designation of fire prevention zones.

In this study, the fire resistance performance of the concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) columns and thin steel-plate composite (TSC) beams installed at a 20-story office building were designed using a performance-based structural fire design. Because of the lack of any specific provisions in the building code and guidelines for structural engineers about the performance-based approach, the only prescriptive approach has been selected for designing fire-resistant structures in Korea. To evaluate the fire resistance performance of the CFT columns and TSC beams, finite element analysis verified by the experimental results studied by several researchers was conducted with ABAQUS. From the fire scenario, the temperature distributions of the CFT columns and TSC beams were found via finite element analysis and the behaviors of the CFT columns and TSC beams were investigated in the structural field based on the temperature distribution.
A two-hour fire-resistance PC hollow slab for residential use was developed to secure structural and fire-resistance performance and to be applied to the general building and apartment housing markets. Compared to the existing hollow slab, in order to secure the same or better structural performance and economic feasibility by reducing the quantity, it was attempted to secure the fire resistance performance by reducing the concrete filling rate in the cross section and adjusting the thickness of the upper and lower flanges by optimizing the hollow shape in the cross section of the slab. For structural performance evaluation, experiments were performed on PC hollow slabs by varying the member thickness and the presence or absence of overlaid concrete, and all of the experimental results showed that the design strength was sufficiently exhibited and that stability during construction was possible. The developed synthetic PC hollow slab has secured fire resistance and residential performance so that it can be applied to all buildings, and it is intended to be immediately applied to the field.
In the design and maintenance of buildings, identifying the degree of damage in the event of a fire is an important factor in fire prevention and fire safety design. In order to predict fire damage, safety measures should be established by predicting the nature of evacuation according to fire, smoke and in-house characteristics, and the effects of the operation of fire safety facilities should also be considered, but in Korea, the risk analysis due to the operation of fire safety facilities is insufficient. Accordingly, this study uses fire statistics and sprinkler inspection data to analyze the degree of fire damage caused by the operation of sprinkler facilities in a probabilistic manner.
The fire safety design of performance is fire behavior inside buildings must be scientifically described and systemized as a theory, thereby allowing application to fire safety design of buildings. In this study, experiment of fire behavior according to disposition of combustibles were performed for correlation analysis between flashover and smoke production rate in building structure. As a result, smoke production rates is happened more than 80 m2/s in compartment(ISO 9705). Also, even if the fire load for flashover to if occur smoke did not, which confirmed that the delay time of occurrence.
As building heights increase, so do these challenges in Korea. High-rise buildings present a variety of challenges to fire safety and protection. The fire protection technology in our country is still on a weak situation which is mainly due to the lack of concerns by the government, companies and citizen. This paper provides general guidance regarding fire-related property protection system for high-rise building performance based design. The importance of high-rise building in of the number of occupants, the value of property, and the a catastrophic loss would have on the community all warrant an increased level of protection and life safety. Because, We have to prepare a new spacial code and standard guidance for fire protection at the stage of the high-rise building design.
