  • Using sodium pyrophoshate as complexing agent, the characteristics and the magnetic properties of the films deposited from electroless cobalt plating bath have been studied. The result obtained are as following; 1. It was found that the optimum bath compositions consisted of 0.1M cobalt sulfate, 0.2M sodium hypophosphite as reducing agent, 0.4M sodium pyrophosphate as complexing agent and 0.5M ammonium sulfate as buffer agent, whereas good operating conditions were the bath of pH 10.5 adjusted with ammonia and 70$^{\circ}C$ of bath temperature, respectively. 2. The coercive force and the squareness of magnetic films were increased with deposition from the low temperature bath. 3. The phosphorous content in Co-P films deposited from these bath was relatively higher than that from Brenner bath. It was assumed to be due to codeposition of phosphorous from the pyrophosphate anion in the solution.

  • The possible use of bioglass as implant materials is due to its biocompatibility to human body. Even if many animal studies for the bioglasses have been performed, their structures and physical properties are not fully understood. In the present work, several investigations such as Raman spectroscopic analysis, density, thermal expansion coefficient, softening temperature, and refractive index measurement were carried out to find the structures and physical properties of bioglasses, where MgO is substituted for CaO in bioglass composition (46.1%SiO2, 24.4%Na2O, 26.9%CaO, 2.6%P2O5 ; mole%). Hydroxyapatite formation on the glass surface reacted in Tris-buffer solution was also examined. When CaO was replaced by MgO, nonbridging oxygen in glass structuer was diminished but the degree of disorder increased. Thermal expansion and softening properties showed the mixed oxide effect. Hydroxyapatite were formed on the surface of 0~11mole% of MgO containing bioglasses, and the thickness of SiO2-rich layer as well as hydroxyapatite layer were unchanged with MgO content. However, the hydroxyapatite was not formed on the surface of the bioglasses containing over 11 mole percent MgO, even if the glasses were reacted for long period.

  • Al-N co-doped ZnO films were fabricated on n-Si (100) and homo-buffer layers in the mixture of oxygen and nitrogen at $450^{\circ}C$ by magnetron sputtering. Target was ZnO ceramic mixed with $2wt%Al_2O_3$. XRD spectra show that as-grown and $600^{\circ}C$ annealed films are prolonged along crystal c-axis. However they are not prolonged in (001) plane vertical to c-axix. The films annealed at $800^{\circ}C$ are not prolonged in any directions. Codoping makes ZnO films unidirectional variation. XPS show that Al content hardly varies and N escapes with increasing annealing temperature from $600^{\circ}C\;to\;800^{\circ}C$. The electric properties of as-grown films were tested by Hall Effect with Van der Pauw configuration show some of them to be p-type conduction.

  • Conventional rate control (RC) schemes for H.264 video coding usually regulate output bit rate to match channel bandwidth by adjusting quantization parameter (QP) at fixed full frame rate, and the passive frame skipping to avoid buffer overflow usually occurs when scene changes or high motions exist in video sequences especially at low bit rate, which degrades spatial-temporal quality and causes jerky effect. In this paper, an active content adaptive frame skipping scheme is proposed instead of passive methods, which skips subjectively trivial frames by structural similarity (SSIM) measurement between the original frame and the interpolated frame via motion vector (MV) copy scheme. The saved bits from skipped frames are allocated to coded key ones to enhance their spatial quality, and the skipped frames are well recovered based on MV copy scheme from adjacent key ones at the decoder side to maintain constant frame rate. Experimental results show that the proposed active SSIM-based frameskip scheme acquires better and more consistent spatial-temporal quality both in objective (PSNR) and subjective (SSIM) sense with low complexity compared to classic fixed frame rate control method JVT-G012 and prior objective metric based frameskip method.

  • The effect of stigmasterol (SS), a phytosterol, in the liposome bilayer on the stability of encapsulated ascorbic acid (ASA) was evaluated. Liposomes, consisting of phosphatidylcholine (PC) and SS, and ASA were encapsulated by the dehydration/rehydration method. The average particle size of the liposome increased with increasing SS content. SS significantly increased the stability of encapsulated ASA. For example, ASA remaining in the liposomes of 100:0, 90:10, and 70:30 (PC:SS, w/w) ratios was 34.12%, 49.88%, and 58.58%, respectively, after storage for 8 days at 4℃, while only 7.66% ASA remained in the buffer under the same conditions. These results indicated that SS in liposomes increased the stability of encapsulated ASA.

  • Effects of protein-sources on Kimchi fermentation and on the stability of ascorbic acid were investigated at $7{\pm}1^{\circ}C.$ Kimchi samples with various protein sources showed the higher pH and total acidity through the fermentation period than kimchi without the proteins. The results revealed that the proteins have acted as good buffer and lactobacilli-growth enhancer in the fermentation, and the milk proteins showed the most significant effect among the samples. The lactobacilli were at the highest growth at 15th day in all the samples. The amounts and changes in ascorbic acid content during the fermentation did not differ significantly between the control and protein added samples. The fresh, unfermented kimchi contained 14.5-15.7mg of ascorbic acid per 100g of sample and decreased continuously by the 12th day of fermentation. After then the vitamin increased in all the samples and then again decreased slowly after 18th day. The contents of ascorbic acid at the end of the 3 weeks-fermentation(16.3-17.3mg/100g) were still higher than the contents of fresh, unfermented kimchi.

  • A highly sensitive, selective and rapid method for the determination of lead based on the reaction of lead (II) with 5-(4'-chlorophenylazo)-6-hydroxypyrimidine-2,4-dione (CPAHPD) and the solid phase extraction of the Pb(II)-CPAHPD complex with Amberlite XAD-2000 was developed, in the presence of pH 5.6 buffer solution and Triton X-114 medium. CPAHPD reacts with lead to form a violet complex with a molar ratio of 2:1 (CPAHPD to lead). This complex was enriched by the solid phase extraction with Amberlite XAD-2000. An enrichment factor of 500 was obtained by elution of the complex from the resin with a minimal amount of isopentyl alcohol(0.2 mL). In isopentyl alcohol medium, the molar absorptivity of the complex is $1.13{\times}10^6L\;mol^{-1}cm^{-1}$ at 647 nm. Beer's law is obeyed in the range of $5.0-160ng\;mL^{-1}$ in the measured solution. The relative standard deviation for 10 replicate samples of $50ng\;mL^{-1}$ level is 1.26%. The detection and quantification limits reaches 1.5 and $4.7ng\;mL^{-1}$ in the original samples. The presented procedure was successfully applied for determination of lead content in real samples such as vegetables, waters, biological and soil samples with satisfactory results.

  • Diabetic nephropathy has been increasing, although blood glucose and blood pressure can be controlled by angiotensin converting enzyme(ACE) or advanced glycosylation end products(AGE) inhibitors in the diabetic patients. We investigated the effect of dietary supplementation of sea tangle on the blood glucose, and pathological scoring of diabetic kidneys in the streptozotocin(STZ) induced diabetic rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into normal rats fed control diet and diabetic rats fed control diet or control diet supplemented with powder or oater extract of sea tangle. Diabetes was induced by a single injection of STZ(60mg/kg, ip) in citrate buffer. The animals were fed the experimental diet and water for 13 weeks. Dietary supplementation of sea tangle decreased blood glucose in the diabetic rats. However, dietary supplementation of sea tangle did not affect the antioxidant enzyme activities, MDA content and pathology of diabetic kidneys. These results indicate that decreased blood glucose by sea tangle could not delay the progression of diabetic kidney disease.
