  • In this study, we investigated the cumulative effect of low temperature on bud dormancy release and bud break characteristics in 'Campbell Early' grapevine (Vitis labruscana B.) cuttings grown in water culture. Additionally, we observed the development of buds while exposed to low temperatures in an attempt to improve our understanding of dormancy and bud break. The shoots were collected 120 days after full bloom (DAFB; leaf abscission period), and the accumulated chill unit (CU) value was calculated by reducing the temperature to $7.2^{\circ}C$ at 125 DAFB. The rate of bud break was 100% in shoots collected at 150 DAFB, The period until the first bud break was two times longer than in the shoots collected 165 DAFB, and bud break speed was significantly reduced. These results indicate that buds are released from endodormancy after 165 DAFB, because at this point the bud break was complete (bud break rate 100%) and it occurred in a very short time period. During this period, when the low-temperature accumulated value was 321h and 442CU according to the CH and Utah models, respectively. Furthermore, the survival rate of main buds decreased rapidly after 165 DAFB, and survival rate of accessory buds was maintained at more than 90% without seasonal differences. The rate of flower bud formation of main buds was much higher than in accessory buds (1:0.23) before the release from endodormancy at 150 DAFB. The final ratio of accessory buds to main buds was high, 1:1.54, at 255 DAFB. Correlation analysis of each investigated factor revealed that bud survival rate and bud formation rate were related only for the main buds, and there was a close relationship between the survival rate of main bud and time. In addition, the survival rate of main buds was positively correlated to the rate of flower bud formation.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the existance of dormancy in newly collected tubers of Eleocharis kuroguwai Ohwi from paddy fields and to determine the effect of various growth regulators on the bud sprouting and tuberization of E. kuroguwai. The maximum percent sprouting of E. kuroguwai collected at every month during winter was less than 60% regardless of varied collection tunes until 50 days after incubation, suggesting the presence of dormancy in E. kuroguwai tubers. This dormancy was markedly broken as the time went by, probably due to the exposure of tubers the extremly low temperature. The treatment of $BA10^{-3}M$ and $BA10^{-3}+GA10^{-6}M$ increased bud sprouting about 10 and 11 times, respectively, than that of the untreated control indicating that BA seems to be one of the most effective agents among the growth regulators used on the bud sprouting of E. kuroguwai. Foliar application of BA increased tuberization of E. kuroguwai by an average of 34.4% as compared with the untreated control. The highest increase, 39.8% was obtained with BA treatment at $10^{-5}M$.

  • The objective of study was carried out to find a proper entrance date for breaking dormancy depending on cutting and entrance date into greenhouse investigating plant growth and flowering characteristics of chrysanthemum 'Baekma'. Days to visible bud formation and days to flowering were increased as cutting date was delayed. The flowering rate of cutting on September 18 was 100% while cutting on October 30 did not induce flower bud formation. Flower characteristics were surveyed after 'Baekma' and 'Jinba' rooted cuttings were planted on September 10. Branching formation rate of 'Baekma' was gradually increased as entrance date was delayed while that of 'Jinba' was about 70-80% regardless of entrance date. Lethality of 'Baekma' moving into greenhouse on December 20 was 1.5% by cold injury. 'Jinba' started to die on November 10 by cold injury and lethality of 'Jinba' moving into greenhouse on December 20 was 21.7%. Thus, lethality of 'Jinba' was about 5-14 times higher than that of 'Baekma'. Days to visible bud formation and days to flowering were decreased as entrance date was delayed in chrysanthemum 'Baekma'. Days to visible bud formation of entrance date on November 10 and December 10 were 67.9 and 50.3, respectively. On the other hand, that of 'Jinba' was increased until entrance date on December 10 and decreased on December 20. Based on these results, it was suggested that dormancy of 'Baekma' was started at late September and completed at late October.

  • This study was carried out to obtain the basic information on the development of flower bud and to clarify the characteristics of flower organ and flowering in Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng) and American ginseng (Panax quinquefolium). The formation of flower bud in the dormancy bud of Korean ginseng was initiated about the middle of June and completed late in September. The ovary, style and anther of Panax ginseng, violet-stem and yellow-berry variants, were formed earlier than those of Panax quinquefolium. Panax ginseng, therefore, flowered earlier by one month in comparison with Panax quinquefolium. As for the effect of temperature on the flowering of ginseng, both species, Panax ginseng and Panax quinquefolium, grown at 20 $^{\circ}C$ flowered earlier than those at 15 $^{\circ}C$ and field conditions, but did not flower at 30 $^{\circ}C$. Seed characters were better in Panax ginseng than in Panax quinquefolium and the amount of seeds showed the highly significant positive correlation coefficient with peduncle length in both Panax ginseng and Panax quinquefolium.

  • Various temperatures and plant growth regulators were assessed to investigate the nature of the dormancy and bud sprouting of stem cutting of Hibiscus syriacus 'Honghwarang'. The bud sprouting was promoted as temperature increased. Under $30^{\circ}C$ condition, stem cuttings began sprouting at 4days after cutting and showed 100% sprouting at 6 days after cutting. With GA or BA treatment, the cuttings started sprouting at 6 days after cuttings under $25^{\circ}C$ condition and reached 65% sprouting, which was not different from the results without hormone treatments. However, ABA dipping under below $25^{\circ}C$ condition resulted in low sprouting, whereas under over $25^{\circ}C$ condition they started sprouting at 6 days after cutting and reached 93% at 12 days after cutting, which indicated that ABA is not effective on inhibition of sprouting under high temperature condition.

  • The foliage of variegated Solomon's seal is excellent in cut flower arrangements. However, it has a restricted marketing period because the harvesting is limited in spring and summer. The increased interest requires the year-round production, thus techniques for dormancy breaking and forcing without low temperature treatment is needed. Therefore, experiments were conducted to d etermine whether gibberellic acid (GA) could break dormancy in variegated Solomon's seal. Thes prouting of dormant bud did not occur throughout the experiment when $GA_3$ $400mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ was applied to dormant rhizomes as a soil drench. However, when plants were treated with a GA drench after scratch with razor blade or were given direct injection of GA, percent sprouting was increased up to 100 or 83.3%, respectively. However, because treatments with razor or syringe may damage internal organs, we tested another method, scarifying the rhizomes with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). Rhizome scarification with 4% NaOCl for 6 or 24 hours followed by drench of $GA_3$ $400mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ increased the dormancy breaking percentage to 70 or 86.7%, respectively. Moreover, scarified and GA-treated rhizomes produced more leaves than untreated or GA-soil drenched plants in the glasshouse. These results showed the possibility of year-round production of variegated Solomon's seal foliage with rhizome scarification and GA treatments.

  • This study was conducted to find out influence of dormancy level and carbon concentration on freezing hardiness in bourse shoot of 'Fuji' apple tree. Bourse shoot of 'Fuji' adult apple tree grafted on M.26 and M.9 rootstocks were used as experimental materials. Dormancy levels of bourse shoot were categorized according to the periods as follows the internal dormancy (late January), the early days after internal dormancy breaking (early February), the late days after internal dormancy breaking (late February), the bud break (late March), and the full bloom (late April). Chilling temperatures with bourse shoot were ranged from 0 to $-40^{\circ}C$. Also, the freezing hardiness according to carbon concentrations were investigated on 'Fuji'/M.9 apple tree that defoliated severely by Marssonina blotch (defoliation) and that of below the average 20 cm in shoot length through heavy crop load (weakness). Results showed that freezing hardiness of bourse shoot may become weaker after internal dormancy breaking. There was no differences in the carbon concentration of bourse shoot of 'Fuji' apple tree grafted on M.9 and M.26, so may be resulted in no difference in freezing hardiness both of bourse shoot grafted on M.9 and M.26 rootstock. Carbon concentration in bourse shoots with weakness and C/N ratio in bourse shoots with defoliation were lower than that of healthy. It may be shown that the freezing hardiness of defoliation and weakness were weaker than that of healthy.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of two male cultivars of asparagus with low different chilling periods on bud breaking, relative spear growth rate, shoot number and yield. Four-month-old plants of two male cultivars of asparagus were dried to impose dormancy and placed in a coldroom at $5^{\circ}C$ to satisfy the chilling requirement for 0, 2, 4, and 6 weeks. After the specified chilling time, the pots were placed in greenhouse. The results showed that mean days to bud break of 'Jersey Giant' significantly decreased with an increasing chilling period from 0 to 6 weeks, but 'Jersey Supreme' was not affected. The relative spear growth rate of 'Jersey Supreme' was significantly stimulated by chilling compared to non-chilled plants. Shoot production and total spear weight of 'Jersey Supreme' tended to be greater than 'Jersey Giant' irrespective of chilling treatments. Following low temperature treatment, 'Jersey Supreme' showed shorter dormant period than 'Jersey Giant', faster growth of spear. The present study showed that asparagus male cultivar at duration of chilling treatment had an affirmative effect on bud breaking, spear growth rates, shoot number and yield of asparagus.

  • We investigated the patterns of freeze injury in dormant 'Changhowon Hwangdo' peach fruit by observing the extent of browning and germination of the branches that were treated with freezing temperature sets simulating the process of natural freezing incidences in orchards. Under the treatment of freezing temperature of $-15^{\circ}C$, the browning ratios were 15% for flower bud and less than 3% for both leaf bud and cambium. Under the $-20^{\circ}C$ treatment, the browning ratios were 40% for both flower and leaf buds and 1% for cambium. The browning ratios were 86%, 68% and 40% respectively for flower bud, leaf bud, and cambium under the $-25^{\circ}C$ treatment. All the samples showed 100% browning ratio under the $-30^{\circ}C$ treatment. The budburst ratios of leaf buds were 85%, 66%, 32%, and 0% under the -15, -20, -25 and $-30^{\circ}C$ treatments, respectively. The branches of peach fruit treated with the same freezing temperature showed different responses depending on the sampling date. In January the browning ratio was low and the budburst ratio was high whereas in February the opposite was the case, showing vulnerability of peach trees to low temperature after endo-dormancy release.
