This paper suggests an analytical approach to investigate the free vibration and stability of functionally graded (FG) beams with both perfect and imperfect characteristics using a quasi-3D higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT) with stretching effect. The study specifically focuses on FG beams resting on variable elastic foundations. In contrast to other shear deformation theories, this particular theory employs only four unknown functions instead of five. Moreover, this theory satisfies the boundary conditions of zero tension on the beam surfaces and facilitates hyperbolic distributions of transverse shear stresses without the necessity of shear correction factors. The elastic medium in consideration assumes the presence of two parameters, specifically Winkler-Pasternak foundations. The Winkler parameter exhibits variable variations in the longitudinal direction, including linear, parabolic, sinusoidal, cosine, exponential, and uniform, while the Pasternak parameter remains constant. The effective material characteristics of the functionally graded (FG) beam are assumed to follow a straightforward power-law distribution along the thickness direction. Additionally, the investigation of porosity includes the consideration of four different types of porosity distribution patterns, allowing for a comprehensive examination of its influence on the behavior of the beam. Using the virtual work principle, equations of motion are derived and solved analytically using Navier's method for simply supported FG beams. The accuracy is verified through comparisons with literature results. Parametric studies explore the impact of different parameters on free vibration and buckling behavior, demonstrating the theory's correctness and simplicity.

The objective of this paper is to investigate the mechanical characteristics of the laminated rubber bearings (LRBs) for the seismic isolation. The evaluations of the proposed equations of the LRB horizontal stiffness are carried out and these equations are extended to the visco-elastic problems to investigate the damping amplifications of LRBs. The stability evaluation of LRBs is also performed. For investigation of the dynamic characteristics of LRBs, the horizontal stiffness equations of the LRBs considering the P-delta effects are applied to the modeling of a seismically isolated structure and the earthquake response time history analyses are carried out. From this research, the proposed simple equation of the horizontal stiffness of LRB is so useful for the design loads and easily extended to the visco-elastic problems. Through the stability evaluation of LRB, the increasing ratio of the total rubber thickness of the LRB severely decrecises the bucking load than the increasing ratio of unit rubber thickness. From the comparison of the dynamic shear deflection of LRB, the analysis results are in good agreement with those of the experiments.

The limit equilibrium method (LEM) is commonly used for slope design and stability analysis because it is easy to simulate slope and requires short calculating time. However, LEM cannot adequately simulate ploughing failure in a footwall slope with a joint set dipping parallel with slope, e.g. bedding joint set. This study performed parametric study to analyze the influence factors on ploughing failure using UDEC which is a commercial two-dimensional DEM (Distinct Element Method)-based numerical program. The influence of joint structure and properties on stability of a footwall slope against ploughing failure was investigated, and the factor of safety was estimated using the shear strength reduction method. It was found that the stability of footwall slope against ploughing failure strongly relies on dip angle of conjugate joint, and the critical bedding joint spacing and the critical length of slab triggering ploughing failure are also affected by dip angle of conjugate joint. The results obtained from this study can be used for effective slope design and construction including reinforcement.

In the present study, conceptual design of the main wing for 20 seats WIG{wing in Ground Effect) flight vehicle, which will be a high speed maritime transportation system for the next generation, was performed. The high stiffness and strength Carbon-Epoxy material was used for the major structure and the skin-spar with a foam sandwich structural type was adopted for improvement of lightness and structural stability. As a design procedure for this study, firstly the design load was estimated with maximum flight load, and then flanges of the front and the rear spar from major bending load and the skin structure and the webs of the spars were preliminarily sized using the netting rules and the rule of mixture. In order to investigate the structural safety and stability, stress analysis was performed by Finite Element Codes such as NASTRAN/PA TRAN[6] and NISA II [7]. From the stress analysis results, it was confirmed that the upper skin structure between the front spar and rear spar was very unstable for the buckling. Therefore in order to solve this problem, a middle spar and the foam sandwich structure at the upper skin and the web were added. After design modification, even thought the designed wing weight was a little bit heavier than the target wing weight, the structural safety and stability of the final design feature was confirmed. Moreover, in order to fix the wing structure at the fuselage, the insert bolt type structure with six high strength bolts was adopted for easy assembly and removal.
The paper describes the vibration and stability of tapered beams on two-parameter elastic foundations. The two-parameter elastic foundations are constructed by distributed Winkler springs and a shearing layer as of ten used in soil models. The shear deformation and the rotatory inertia of a beam are taken into account. Governing equations are derived from energy expressions using Hamilton\`s principle. The associated eigenvalue problems are solved to obtain the free vibration frequencies or the buckling loads. Numerical results for the vibration of a beam with an axial force are presented and compared when other solutions are available. Vibration frequencies, mode shapes, and critical forces of a tapered Timoshenko beam on elastic foundations under an axial force are investigated for various thickness ratios, shear foundation parameters, Winkler foundation parameters and boundary conditions.
A numerical method has been developed for studying the dynamics of a flexible cylinder in a coaxial cylindrical duct, immersed in inviscid flow. The unsteady inviscid fluid-dynamic force acting on the oscillating cylinder has been estimated more rigorously by means of a spectral collocation method without simplification of governing equations. This numerical approach is applicable to the system haying wider annular gap and/or shorter length of cylinder as compared to existing potential theory. The governing equation of the unsteady flow was obtained from Laplace equation. The equation of cylinder motion coupled with the fluid motion was discretized by Galerkin's method, from which the dynamic behaviour of the system has been evaluated. The effect of the length of the cylinder and the annular gap on the critical flour velocity, where the system loses stability by buckling, was investigated. To validate the numerical method, the potential flow theory developed by Hobson based on thin film approximation has been improved. Typical results of the present numerical theory on the dynamics and stability of the system are compared with those of available existing theory and the present approximate results. Good agreement was found between the results. It was also found that a nondimensional critical flow velocity becomes larger as increasing the annular gap and decreasing the length of cylinder.
Wind-resistant design of existing cooling tower structures overlooks the impacts of rainfall. However, rainstorm will influence aerodynamic force on the tower surface directly. Under this circumstance, the structural response of the super-large cooling tower (SLCT) will become more complicated, and then the stability and safety of SLCT will receive significant impact. In this paper, surrounding wind fields of the world highest (210 m) cooling tower in Northwest China underthree typical wind velocities were simulated based on the wind-rain two-way coupling algorithm. Next, wind-rain coupling synchronous iteration calculations were conducted under 9 different wind speed-rainfall intensity combinations by adding the discrete phase model (DPM). On this basis, the influencing laws of different wind speed-rainfall intensity combinations on wind-driving rain, adhesive force of rain drops and rain pressure coefficients were discussed. The acting mechanisms of speed line, turbulence energy strength as well as running speed and trajectory of rain drops on structural surface in the wind-rain coupling field were disclosed. Moreover, the fitting formula of wind-rain coupling equivalent pressure coefficient of the cooling tower was proposed. A systematic contrast analysis on its 3D distribution pattern was carried out. Finally, coupling model of SLCT under different working conditions was constructed by combining the finite element method. Structural response, buckling stability and local stability of SLCT under different wind velocities and wind speed-rainfall intensity combinations were compared and analyzed. Major research conclusions can provide references to determine loads of similar SLCT accurately under extremely complicated working conditions.

The soundproof tunnels have been generally designed with H-beam girders, and the high weight of H-beam may cause the excessive design of the substructure. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a new soundproof tunnel girder design composed of pipes and discontinuous plates. First, the structural behavior of the straight girder according to the design parameters was examined through finite element analysis. The arrangement and shape of the plates were determined as the design parameter, to obtain the optimal design of girder. After then, the structural behavior and buckling stability of the arched girder were subsequently evaluated. As a result of the parameter analysis, it was confirmed that the axial force acting on the girder increased and the moment decreased as the ratio of unsupported sections decreased or the number of supporting plates increased. The stress concentration on the pipe member was relieved by increasing the long axis length of the elliptical plate. Arched girder analysis showed that the structural efficiency increase as the long axis of elliptical plate increase. As a result of the buckling evaluation, the buckling threshold load of the three connected girders was about 3.7 times higher than the design load. Consequently, it was confirmed that the proposed soundproof tunnel structure design satisfies both light weight and structural safety.

This paper describes the behavior and failure probability of the basic structural members in a fire for the fire safety assessment of offshore structures. A fire safety assessment can be accomplished by comparing the fire resistance of the members with the fire severity of the heat load due to fire. The fire severity is represented as the maximum temperature of the members using the Eurocode 1 standard fire curve and heat transfer equation. On the other hand, the fire resistance is the limiting temperature calculated by a simplified formula in the case of simple structural members. Considering the complexity of FPSOs and offshore structures, a general-purpose structural analysis program should be used and the limiting temperature obtained by analyzing the structural strength of the members through an elasto-plastic analysis with a large deflection, and compared with the maximum temperature. Also, the equality of these two methods of evaluating the fire resistance was confirmed by comparing them. Following three criteria, the strength, serviceability and stability, three failure modes, namely the first failure of a hinge, large deflection and buckling, were chosen. The failure temperature was verified for each failure mode. using the AFOSM method in the equation of the fire severity and fire resistance, thereby giving the failure probability of the member. By applying these processes to the example of a beam and plate, the behavior of the structure and failure (temperature?) of each failure mode can be determined.

In this paper, we investigate the natural frequencies and buckling loads of functionally graded material (FGM) plates and shells, using a quasi-conforming shell element that accounts for the transverse shear strains and rotary inertia. The eigenvalue of the FGM plates and shells are calculated by varying the volume fraction of the ceramic and metallic constituents using a sigmoid function, but their Poisson's ratios of the FGM plates and shells are assumed to be constant. The expressions of the membrane, bending and shear stiffness of FGM shell element are more complicated combination of material properties than a homogeneous element. In order to validate the finite element numerical solutions, the Navier's solutions of rectangular plates based on the first-order shear deformation theory are presented. The present numerical solutions of composite and sigmoid FGM (S-FGM) plates are proved by the Navier's solutionsand various examples of composite and FGM structures are presented. The present results are in good agreement with the Navier's theoretical solutions.
