Not all structural columns maintain a vertical orientation. Several contemporary building structures have inclined columns, introducing distinct challenges, particularly in buckling behavior. This study examines the buckling behavior of inclined, thin-walled steel bundled columns, differing from typical vertical columns. Using specimens with three tubes welded to plates linearly aligned at the top and triangularly at the bottom, tests indicated that buckling capacity increases with tube wall thickness and diameter but decreases with column height. Inclined tubes in bundled columns showed improved buckling resistance over vertical ones. Results were verified against standard steel design guidelines to assess their predictive accuracy.
The railroad under operation has very sharp curves and the state of ballast is somewhat deteriorated due to the traffic loads, which put some constraints in converting the conventional rails into CWR. In making CWR, the determination whether the ballast has sufficient capacity for resisting buckling must be made, quantitatively and qualitatively, and schemes to guarantee the required lateral resistance of ballast should be proposed. In this study, using the in-situ investigated data, the probability of buckling of CWR is given for several installation temperatures for CWR. The effect of tamping, DTS, and sleeper spacing are taken into account. The buckling probability is given as a function of curvature and installation temperature of CWR and works used to increase the ballast resistance capacity after tamping, i.e., DTS and reduction of sleeper sparing.
The behavior of continuous welded rail tracks is directly affected by the following various parameters: rail size; track curvature; neutral temperature; misalignment; and ballast resistance. Most of these parameters are having the nature of random variables. Therefore, uncertainties exist in the buckling safety assessments. The evaluation of the buckling safety and the maintenance strategy based on the deterministic analysis are very inefficient since the value of deterministic parameters are selected in worst track condition. In this study, the probabilistic approach method were investigated considering the probabilistic distribution of major parameters such as the neutral temperature of rail and the ballast resistance.
Stainless steels are commonly employed in engineering applications since they have superior properties such as low maintenance cost, and high temperature and corrosion resistance. These features allow them to be preferred in cylindrical shell structures as well. The behavior of a cylindrical shell structure made of stainless steel can be quite different from that made of carbon steel, as the material properties differ from each other. This paper deals with buckling behavior of axially loaded cylindrical shells made of stainless-steel. For this purpose, a combined experimental and numerical study was carried out. The experimental study comprised of testing of 18 cylindrical specimens. Following the experimental study, a numerical study was first conducted to validate test results. The comparisons show that finite element models provide good agreement with test results. Then, a numerical parametric study consisting of 450 models was performed to develop more generalized design recommendations for axially compressed cylindrical shell structures made of stainless steel. A simple formula was proposed for the practical design purposes. In other words, buckling strength curve equation is developed for three different fabrication quality.
Buckling capacity of compression members may change due to inadvertent changes in the member section dimensions or material properties. This may be the result of repair, modification of section properties or degradation of the material properties. In some occasions, enhancement of buckling capacity of compression members may be achieved through splicing of plates or utilization of composite materials. It is very important for a designer to predict the buckling resistance of the compression member and the important parameters that affect its buckling strength once changes in section and/or material properties took place. This paper presents an analytical approach for determining the buckling capacity of a compression member whose geometric and/or material properties has been altered resulting in a multi-step non-uniform section. This analytical solution accommodates the changes and modifications to the material and/or section properties of the compression member due to the factors mentioned. The analytical solution provides adequate information and a methodology that is useful during the design stage as well as the repair stage of compression members. Three case studies are presented to show that the proposed analytical solution is an efficient method for predicting the buckling strength of compression members that their section and/or material properties have been altered due to splicing, coping, notching, ducting and corrosion.
The stability and resistance of the plates under in-plane loading is crucial in the design of structures. For the assessment of structural stability, it is necessarily required to have accurate finite element technologies. Therefore, the enhanced 9-node plate (Q9-ANS) element is introduced for the linear buckling analysis of plate where the critical buckling load has to be determined. The Q9-ANS is developed with the Reissner-Mindlin (RM) assumptions which consider transverse shear deformation of the plate. Assumed shear strain is used to alleviate the shear locking phenomenon. Numerical examples are carried out to verify the performance of the Q9-ANS element in calculation of critical buckling load of the plates.
The buckling behavior of CWR tracks is affected by the various parameters such as stiffness and geometry of track panel, ballast resistance, rail temperature, initial imperfection, and wheel load. Until now, CWR tracks were managed by the dichotomous logic (deterministic approach) despite these influence factors are having the nature of random variables. So, the design method and existing management process to prevent the track buckling can be very non-economic since the value of these influence factors to calculate the track buckling strength are selected by considering the worst track condition. In this study, buckling probability evaluation process is proposed which is based on the reliability index, AFOSM method, and limit state equation.
The lateral stability of curved continuous welded rail (CWR) is studied fur buckling prevention. This study includes the influences of vehicle induced loads on the thermal buckling behavior of straight and curved CWR tracks. quasi-static loads model is assumed to determine the uplift region, which occurs due to the vertical track deformation induced by wheel loads of vehicle. Parametric numerical analyses are performed to calculate the upper and lower critical buckling temperatures of CWR tracks. The parameters include track lateral resistance, track curvature, longitudinal stiffness, tie-ballast friction coefficient, axle load, truck center spacing, and the ratio of lateral to vertical vehicle load. This study provides a guideline for the improvement or stability for dynamic buckling in on tracks.
The predominant type of buckling that I-steel concrete composite beams experience in the negative moment area is distortional buckling. The key factors that affect distortional buckling are the torsional and lateral restraints by the bottom flange. This study thoroughly investigates the equivalent lateral and torsional restraint stiffnesses of the bottom flange of an I-steel concrete composite beam under negative moments. The results show a coupling effect between the applied forces and the lateral and torsional restraint stiffnesses of the bottom flange. A formula is proposed to calculate the critical buckling stress of the I-steel concrete composite beams under negative moments by considering the lateral and torsional restraint stiffnesses of the bottom flange. The proposed method is shown to better predict the critical bending moment of the I-steel composite beams. This article introduces an improved method to calculate the elastic foundation beams, which takes into account the lateral and torsional restraint stiffnesses of the bottom flange and considers the coupling effect between them. The results show a close match in results from the calculation method proposed in this paper and the ANSYS finite element method, which validates the proposed calculation method. The proposed calculation method provides a theoretical basis for further research on distortional buckling and the ultimate resistance of I-steel concrete composite beams under a variable axial force.

Upon direct/indirect exposure to flame or heat, composite structures may burn or thermally buckle. This issue becomes more important in the natural fiber-based composite structures with higher flammability and lower mechanical properties. The main goal of the present study was to obtain an optimal eco-friendly composite system with low flammability and high thermal buckling resistance. The studied composite consisted of polypropylene (PP) and short abaca fiber (AF) with eggshell powder (ESP) and halloysite clay nanotubes (HNTs) additives. An optimal base composite, consisting of 30 wt.% AF and 70 wt.% PP, abbreviated as OAP, was initially introduced based on burning rate (BR) and the Young's modulus determined by horizontal burning test (HBT) and tensile test, respectively. The effects of adding ESP to the base composite were then investigated with the same experimental tests. The results indicated that though the BR significantly decreased with the increase of ESP content up to 6 wt.%, it had a very destructive influence on the stiffness of the composite. To compensate for the damaging effect of ESP, small amount of HNT was used. The performance of OAP composite with 6 wt.% ESP and 3 wt.% HNT (OAPEH) was explored by conducting HBT, cone calorimeter test (CCT) and tensile test. The experimental results indicated a 9~23 % reduction in almost all flammability parameters such as heat release rate (HRR), total heat released (THR), maximum average rate of heat emission (MARHE), total smoke released (TSR), total smoke production (TSP), and mass loss (ML) during combustion. Furthermore, the combination of 6 wt.% ESP and 3 wt.% HNT reduced the stiffness of OAP to an insignificant amount by maximum 3%. Moreover, the char residue analysis revealed the distinct differences in the formation of char between AF/PP and AF/PP/ESP/HNT composites. Afterward, dilatometry test was carried out to examine the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of OAP and OAPEH samples. The obtained results showed that the CTE of OAPEH composite was about 18% less than that of OAP. Finally, a theoretical model was used based on first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) to predict the critical bucking temperatures of the OAP and OAPEH composite plates. It was shown that in the absence of mechanical load, the critical buckling temperatures of OAPEH composite plates were higher than those of OAP composites, such that the difference between the buckling temperatures increased with the increase of thickness. On the contrary, the positive effect of CTE reduction on the buckling temperature decreased by raising the axial compressive mechanical load on the composite plates which can be assigned to the reduction of stiffness after the incorporation of ESP. The results of present study generally stated that a suitable combination of AF, PP, ESP, and HNT can result in a relatively optimal and environmentally friendly composite with proper flame and thermal buckling resistance with no significant decline in the stiffness.
