  • Despite all the recent advances in biodegradable material-based microneedles, the bending and failure (especially buckling) of a biodegradable microneedle during skin tissue insertion remains a major technical hurdle for its large-scale commercialization. A reduction in skin tissue puncture force during microneedle insertion remains an essential issue in successfully developing a biodegradable microneedle. Here, we consider uniaxial and equibiaxial prestrains applied to a skin tissue as mechanophysical stimuli that can reduce the skin tissue puncture force, and investigate the effect of prestrain on the changes in skin tissue puncture force. For a porcine skin tissue similar to that of humans, the skin tissue puncture force of a flat-end microneedle is measured with a z-axis stage equipped with a load cell, which provides a force-time curve during microneedle insertion. The findings of this study lead to a quantitative characterization of the relationship between prestrain and the skin tissue puncture force.

  • The steel tube of Concrete-Filled Tube(CFT) confines the concrete and the concrete restrains the buckling of the tube, The objective of this study is to investigate the influences of the opening shape of the through diaphragm in case of the rectangular CFT column-to-beam connection through the structural experiment. The experiment results are compared with analysis results obtained by using the FEM program. These results are shown that strength of the rectangular CFT column-to-beam connection have similar structural performance regardless of the opening shape if opening areas of the through diaphragm are same. Also in case the connection area/shape of the through diaphragm and the flange of H-beam are similar, it was ascertained that the bending stress occurred at the beam can be transferred to the column through the diaphragm.

  • This paper presents experimental and numerical studies on effects of local damages on the in-plane elastic-plastic buckling and strength of a fixed parabolic steel tubular arch under a vertical load distributed uniformly over its span, which have not been reported in the literature hitherto. The in-plane structural behaviour and strength of ten specimens with different local damages are investigated experimentally. A finite element (FE) model for damaged steel tubular arches is established and is validated by the test results. The FE model is then used to conduct parametric studies on effects of the damage location, depth and length on the strength of steel arches. The experimental results and FE parametric studies show that effects of damages at the arch end on the strength of the arch are more significant than those of damages at other locations of the arch, and that effects of the damage depth on the strength of arches are most significant among those of the damage length. It is also found that the failure modes of a damaged steel tubular arch are much related to its initial geometric imperfections. The experimental results and extensive FE results show that when the effective cross-section considering local damages is used in calculating the modified slenderness of arches, the column bucking curve b in GB50017 or Eurocode3 can be used for assessing the remaining in-plane strength of locally damaged parabolic steel tubular arches under uniform compression. Furthermore, a useful interaction equation for assessing the remaining in-plane strength of damaged steel tubular arches that are subjected to the combined bending and axial compression is also proposed based on the validated FE models. It is shown that the proposed interaction equation can provide lower bound assessments for the remaining strength of damaged arches under in-plane general loading.

  • The building design projects which are being proceeded nowadays pursue a complex and various shape of structures, escaping from the traditional and regular shape of buildings. In this new trend of the architecture, there rises a demand of the research in the structural engineering for the effective realization of such complex-shaped buildings which disassembles the orthogonality of frames. As a distinguished characteristics of the buildings in a complex-shape, there frequently are inclined columns included in the structural frame. The inclined column causes extra axial force and bending moment at the beam-column connection so it is necessary to assess those effects on the structural behavior of the frame and the connection by experiment or analysis. However, with comparing to the studies on the normal beam-column connections, the inclined column connections have not been studied sufficiently. Therefore, this study evaluated the beam-column connections having an inclined column using nonlinear and finite element analysis method. In this paper, steel moment frames having inclined columns were analyzed by the nonlinear pushover analysis to check the global behavior and beam-column connection models were analyzed by the finite element analysis to check the buckling behavior and the fracture potentials.

  • This study presented the results of the static load tests conducted to verify the structural robustness of the composite oxidant tank for a space launch vehicle. First, we introduced the test equipment used in the static load test of the composite oxidant tank, and then described the test requirements that the composite oxidant tank must satisfy. In addition, we presented a test set-up diagram consisting of the static load test fixture, hydraulic pressure, control equipment, and data acquisition equipment, and the load profile of the static load test of the composite oxidant tank consisting of shear, equivalent compression, bending, and combination tests. As a result of load control, we verified the reliability of this test by showing the errors between the input load and the feedback load in each channel according to the increase of the test load, and the feedback error between the channel A and channel B of load cell in each load actuator. As a result of the static load test, the load of the actuator was properly controlled within the allowable error range in each test, and we found that the test specimen did not cause damage or buckling that causes significant structural defects in the required load.
