  • To validate the accuracy of the boiling heat flux partitioning model, an experiment was performed to investigate how the wall heat flux is divided into the three heat transfer modes of evaporation, quenching, and single-phase convection during subcooled nucleate boiling on a vertical wall. For the experimental partitioning of the wall heat flux, the wall heat flux and liquid-vapor distributions were simultaneously obtained using synchronized infrared thermometry and the total reflection technique. Boiling experiments of water with subcooling of $10^{\circ}C$ were conducted under atmospheric pressure, and the results obtained at the wall superheat of $12^{\circ}C$ and average heat flux of $283kW/m^2$were analyzed. There was a large difference in the heat flux partitioning results between the experiment and correlation, and the bubble departure diameter and bubble influence factor, which account for a portion of the surrounding superheated liquid layer detached by the departure of a bubble, were found to be important fundamental boiling parameters.

  • This paper presents a wideband Colpitts voltage controlled oscillator(VCO) with nanosecond startup time and a center frequency of 8.35 GHz for a new bubble-type motion detector that has a bubble-layer detection zone at the specific distance from itself. The VCO circuit consists of two parts; one is a negative resistance part with a HEMT device and Colpitts feedback structure and the other is a resonator part with a varactor diode and shorted shunt microstrip line. The shorted shunt microstrip line and series capacitor are utilized to compensate for the input reactance of the packaged HEMT that changes from capacitive values to inductive values at 8.1 GHz due to parasitic package inductance. By tuning the feedback capacitors which determine negative resistance values, this paper also investigates startup time improvement with the negative resistance variation and tuning bandwidth improvement with the reactance slope variation of the negative resistance part. The VCO measurement shows the tuning bandwidth of 2.3 GHz(28 %), the output power of 4.1~7.5 dBm and the startup time of less than 2 nsec.

  • Concrete exposed to severely low temperature below $-20^{\circ}C$ should be provided with proper heat supplying curing to protect the concrete from early frost damage at the time of pouring.meanwhile, so far, effective heat curingmethods of the concrete under severely low temperature are not well established in Korea. For this reason, the objective of this paper is to provide effective heat curingmethod of concrete exposed to severely low temperature to protect early frost damage by varying the combination of heat curingmaterial combinations. Temperature history, maturity development and core strength results are investigated. Fourmock-up specimens simulating slab, wall and column were prepared and heat insulation, heat supplying and both were applied. Test results indicate that the combination of quadruple layer bubble sheet(4BS) and embedding of heating cable has desirable performance for a slab, and heat supplying curing inside heat enclosure and heat generationmat also shows desirable performance for a wall, and for a column, use of EPS heat insulation has proper performance against early frost damage, which reaches $45^{\circ}D{\cdot}D$ and helps the concretemaintain above $0^{\circ}C$ within 3 days. Themethodsmentioned above are believed to be optimum protection from early frost damage of the concrete under $-20^{\circ}C$.

  • The appearance of a rivulet at the upper surface of a stay cable is responsible for rain-wind-induced vibration (RWIV) of cables of cable-stayed bridges. However, the formation mechanism of the upper rivulet and its aerodynamic effects on the stay cable has not been fully understood. Large eddy simulation (LES) method is used to investigate flow around and aerodynamics of a circular cylinder with an upper rivulet at a Reynolds number of 140,000. Results show that the mean lift coefficients of the circular cylinder experience three distinct stages, zero-lift stage, positive-lift stage and negative-lift stage as the rivulet located at various positions. Both pressure-induced and friction-induced aerodynamic forces on the upper rivulet are helpful for its appearance on the upside of the stay cable. The friction-induced aerodynamic forces, which have not been considered in the previous theoretical models, may not be neglected in modeling the RWIV. In positive-lift stage, the shear layer separated from the upper rivulet can reattach on the surface of the cylinder and form separation bubbles, which result in a high non-zero mean lift of the cylinder and potentially induces the occurrence of RWIV. The separation bubbles are intrinsically unsteady flow phenomena. A serial of small eddies first appears in the laminar shear layer separated from the upper rivulet, which then coalesces and reattaches on the side surface of the cylinder and eventually sheds into the wake.

  • The formation of the lava dam of the paleo lake blocked the entrance to the Chatancheon River on the Jeongok lava plateau and it suddenly transformed the terrestrial ecosystem into the aquatic one by the overflow. The spiders in the lava dam adapted in the wetland and evolved into water spiders that could survive by forming bubble houses. Since then, the lava dam was connected to the present Hantangang River due to the dissection and the lake became a terrestrial environment, a small area of marsh composed of primarily clay soil layer. Change in water level of the habitat and thus the extension of the terrestrial area made the species a endangered now. This study carried out frequency of occurrence, degree of wetness and plant habitats of the vascular plant in the water spider habitat. As a result of this study, total 180taxa are of 55 (30.6%) wetland plant groups and of 113 (62.8%) upland plant groups except facultative plant groups. Among the wetland plant groups, the Isachne globosa community occupied the largest area, where the water spiders were most observed. The result of this study, the classification and the types of vascular plant species, would provide useful information for the sustaining healthy wetland ecosystem and the restoration of the habitat for the water spiders.

  • This study aimed to examine whether heat curing methods of concrete subjected to $-10^{\circ}C$ could be effective by varying the combination of heating cable and surface heat insulations. Three different concrete specimens incorporating 30% fly ash with 50% W/B were fabricated to simulate wall, column and slab members with dimensions of $1600{\times}800{\times}200$ mm for slab, $800{\times}600{\times}200$ mm for wall and $800{\times}800{\times}800$ mm for column. For heat curing combinations, Type-1 specimens applied PE film for slab, plywood for wall and column curing. Type-2 specimens applied double layer bubble sheet (2LB) and heating coil for slab, and 50 mm styrofoam for wall and column curing. Type-3 specimen applied 2LB for slab, electrical heating mat for wall and column inside heating enclosure. The test results revealed that the temperature of Type 1 specimen dropped below $0^{\circ}C$ beginning at 48 hours after placement due to its poor heat insulating capability. Type 2 and 3 specimens maintained a temperature of around $5{\sim}10^{\circ}C$ after placement due to favorable heat insulating and thermal resistance.

  • Two-Dimensional incompressible laminar boundary layer with the reversed flow region is computed using the parially parabolized Navier-Stokes equations in primitive variables. The velocities and the pressure are explicity coupled in the difference equation and the resulting penta-diagonal matrix equations are solved by a streamwise marching technique. The test calculations for the trailing edge region of a finite flat plate and Howarth's linearly retarding flows demonstrate that the method is accurate, efficient and capable of predicting the reversed flow region.

  • Phase averaged velocity fields in the near wake region behind a square cylinder have been (successfully) obtained using randomly sampled PIV data sets. The Reynolds number based on the flow velocity and the vertex height was 3,900. To identify the phase information, we examined the magnitude of circulation and the center of peak vorticity. The center of vorticity was estimated from lowpass filtered vorticity contours (LES decomposition) adopting a sub-pixel searching algirithm. Due to the sinusoidal nature of firculation which is closely related to the instantaneous vorticity, the location of peak voticity fits well with a sine curve of the circulation magnitude. Conditionally-averaged velocity fields represent the barman vortex shedding phenomenon very well within 5 degrees phase uncertainty. The oscillating nature of the separated shear layer and the separation bubble at the top surface are clearly observed. With the hot-wire measurements of Strouhal frequency, we found thats the convection velocity changes its magnitude very rapidly from 25 to 75 percent of the free stream velocity along the streamwise direction when the flow passes by the recirculation region.

  • There are multistage preheaters in the power generation plan to improve the thermal efficiency of the plant and to prevent the components from the thermal shock. The energy source of these heaters comes from the extracted two phase fluid of working system. These two-phase fluid can cause the so-called Flow Accelerated Corrosion(FAC) in the extracting piping and the bubble plate of the heater for example, in case of point Beach Nuclear Power Plant and in the Wolsung Nuclear Power Plant. The FAC is due to the mass transport of the thin oxide layer by the convection. FAC is dependent on many parameters such as the operation temperature, void fraction, the fluid velocity and pH of fluid and so on. Therefore, in this paper velocity was calculated by FLUENT code in order to find out the root cause of the wall thinning of the feedwater heaters. It also includeed in the fluid mixing analysis model are around the number 5A feedwater heater shell including the extraction pipeline. To identify the relation between the local velocities and wall thinning, the local velocities according to the analysis results were compared with distribution of the shell wall thicknes by ultrasonic test.
