  • Purpose : It is known that the neutron is generally generated from the photon, its energy is larger than 10 MV. The neutron is leaked in the container inspection system installed at the customs though its energy is below 9 MV. It is needed that the spacial effect of the neutrons released from radiation treatment machine, linac, installed in the medical canter. Materials and Methods : The medical linear accelerator(Clinac 1800, varian, USA) was used in the experiment. Measuring neutron was used bubble detector(Bubble detector, BDPND type, BTI, Canada) which was created bubble by neutron. The bubble detector is located on the medical linear accelerator outskirt in three different distance, 30, 50, 120 cm and upper, lower four point from the iso-center. In addition, for effect on protect material we have measured eight points which are 50 cm distance from iso-center. The SAD(source-axis-distance), distance from photon source to iso-center, is adjusted to 100 cm and the field size is adjusted to $15{\times}15cm^2$. Irradiate 20 MU and calculate the dose rate in mrem/MU by measuring the number of bubble. Results : The neutron is more detected at 5 position in 30, 50 cm, 7 position in 120 cm and with wedge, and 2 position without mount. Conclusion : Though detection position is laid in the same distance in neutron measurement, the different value is shown in measuring results. Also, neutron dose is affected by the additional structure, the different value is obtained in each measurement positions. So, it is needed to measure and evaluate the neutron dose in the whole space considering the effect of the distance, angular distribution and additional structure.

  • The microbubbles were used in various fields, such as turbulent control, drag reduction, material science and life science. The X-ray PTV using X-ray micro-imaging technique was employed to mea-sure the size and velocity of micro-bubbles moving in an opaque tube simultaneously. Micro-bubbles of $10{\sim}60{\mu}m$ diameter moving upward in an opaque tube (${\phi}$=2.7mm) were tested. Due to the different refractive indices of water and air, phase contrast X-ray images clearly show the exact size and shape of over-lapped microbubbles. In all of the working fluids tested (deionized water, tap water, 0.01 and 0.10M NaCl solutions), the measured terminal velocity of the microbubbles rising through the solution was proportional to the square of the bubble diameter. The rising velocity was increased with increasing mole concentration. The microbubble can be useful as contrast agent or tracer in life science and biology. The X-ray PTV technique should be able to extract useful information on the behavior of various bio/microscale fluid flows that are not amenable to analysis using conventional methods.

  • In coastal bay waters, bubbles are generated by relatively heavy ship-traffic, breaking waves due to man-made structures and biological activities. Therefore, the bubble-generating mechanism as well as the bubble density distribution in the bay are quite different from the open ocean where breaking waves are major contributor for bubble density distribution. High frequency surface-backscattered signals were obtained in the coastal bay waters and they were analyzed to compare with those from the open waters in terms of the sea-surface backscattering strength at various grazing angles, the reverberation characteristics in the sub-surface layer and spectral spreading of the scattered signals. The results show that, the surface scattered signals have an irregular distribution of amplitude in time and the width of the spectral spreading is wider than that of the open sea with rough surface. Furthermore, the amplitude distribution of the reverberation signals is not following the Rayleigh distribution, that is eon to be a typical pattern for the open ocean. The results of our analysis imply that the bubble size and the bubble density in the bay are quite different from those observed in the open waters.

  • The production of ginseng cultivation is decreasing due to shortage of cultivated land and climate change, so additional methods are needed. Therefore, the physiological and morphological characteristics of finebubble were analyzed by applying them to ginseng cultivation which is the representative crop of Korea. The application of fine bubble water to 2 year old ginseng showed that stem length and leaf were increased, and weight increased as main root increased in root. In particular, it is shown that the weight of roots increases with the increase of leaf size. This is because the total chlorophyll content is high and it is judged to be related to the increase of photosynthesis efficiency. When the results of this study were confirmed, it was confirmed that ginseng cultivation using fine bubbles showed no inhibition of growth of ginseng. According to the results of physiological characteristics and subdividing results, It was confirmed that the growth of about 10% to 15% of the growth was increased and that the growth of ginseng was increased by applying the fine bubble when growing ginseng.

  • To verify the quality of bubbles during the use of quartz glass crucibles (QC), an appropriate accelerated testing method was proposed. The bubble state of discarded waste crucibles obtained from actual Czochralski (Cz) processes was analyzed, and optimal heat treatment conditions were suggested by varying temperature, pressure, and time using the QC test piece. By subjecting the samples to heat treatment at 1450℃, 0.4 Torr, and 40 hours, it was possible to control the bubble size and density to a similar level as those generated in the actual Cz process. In particular, by selecting a relatively lower pressure of 0.4 Torr compared to the typical range of 10~20 Torr applied in the Cz process, the time required for accelerated bubble formation testing could be reduced. However, it was determined that increasing the heat treatment temperature to 1550℃ led to the phenomenon of Ostwald ripening, resulting in larger bubbles and a rapid decrease in density. Therefore, it was concluded that it was not a suitable condition for the desired b ake test.

  • In this study, the polymeric membrane module is used as a diffuser and an image analysis technique based on visual information is applied to get bubble characteristics. The bubble size generated passed through polymeric membrane module was smaller from 30 to 64% than that of air stone, and bubble volume over 70% was ranged from 0.2 to 0.82 mm. But over 80% the bubbles from air stone diffuser ranged from 0.77 to 1.08 mm. The air stone and polymeric membrane module used as diffuser for a flotation system. The floc size inside the flotation reactor using air stone diffuser was bigger than that of the polymeric membrane module, which means that the micro-bubbles generated from polymeric membrane module could provide better opportunities for collisions between colloidal particles than those from air stone diffuser. Therefore, there is a possibility to apply the polymeric membrane module as a diffuser to increase the removal efficiency in the flotation process. Also, the image analysis technique used in this study could be applied as a useful analytical tool for acquisition of an information about the bubble characteristic.

  • Lineal and angular movements of many engine components make the lubricant absorb air and the aerated lubricant greatly influences the clearance performance of contacting behaviors of engine components such as big-end bearing, cam and tappet, etc. This study investigates the behaviors of aerated lubricant in the gap between con-rod bearing and proceeding which is one of the most frictional energy consuming components in the engine. Our assumption for the analysis of aerated lubricant film is that the film formation is influenced by the two major factors. One is the density characteristics of the lubricant due to the volume change of lubricant by absorbing the bubbles and the other is the viscosity characteristics of the lubricant due to the surface tension of the bubble in the lubricant. In our investigation, it is found that these two major factors surprisingly increase the load capacity in certain ranges of bubble sizes and densities. Frictional forces are also influenced by the aerated bubble size and density, which eventually enlarge the shear resistance due the surface tension, Modified Reynolds' equation is developed for the computation of fluid film pressure with the effects of aeration ratio under the dynamic loading condition. From the calculated load capacity by solving modified Reynolds' equation, proceeding locus is computed with Mobility method at each time step.

  • Local two-phase flow parameters of subcooled flow boiling in inclined annulus were measured to investigate the effect of inclination on the internal flow structure. Two-conductivity probe technique was applied to measure local gas phasic parameters, including void fraction, vapor bubble frequency, chord length, vapor bubble velocity and interfacial area concentration. Local liquid velocity was measured by Pilot tube. Experiments were conducted for three angles of inclination; 0$^{\circ}$(vertical), 30$^{\circ}$, 60$^{\circ}$. The system pressure was maintained at atmospheric pressure. The range of average void fraction was up to 10% and the average liquid superficial velocities were less than 1.3 m/sec. The results of experiments showed that the distributions of two-phase How parameters were influenced by the angle of channel inclination. Especially, the void fraction and chord length distributions were strongly affected by the increase of inclination angle, and flow pattern transition to slug flow was observed depending on the How conditions. The profiles of vapor velocity, liquid velocity and interfacial area concentration were found to be affected by the non-symmetric bubble size distribution in inclined channel. Using the measured distributions of local phasic parameters, an analysis for predicting average void fraction was performed based on the drift flux model and flowing volumetric concentration. And it was demonstrated that the average void fraction can be more appropriately presented in terms of flowing volumetric concentration.

  • Although DAF(Dissolved Air Flotation) has been successfully accepted for water and wastewater treatment, the fundamental characteristics of the process have not been fully investigated. Water is saturated with compressed air to dissolve the air into the water at high pressure in saturation tank. Then the water containing dissolved air is released into a floatation tank at a lower pressure, generating micro-bubbles that rise gently through the water and carry the suspended matter to the surface. This study investigated the removal of sewage using automatic mixture type DAF pump and non-powered flotation tank. Characteristics of two devices were compared and analyzed with samples. The results showed that the PAC exhibited higher performance than other coagulants. When air dosage was 2.5ml/l/min, treatment was stable in operation. In the DAF pump with a pressure of 4 atm., the average size of bubbles was 36.2${\mu}m$. Removal efficiency of SS was 80%. At this time removal efficiency of COD was about 80%, of T-N was 30% and T-P was 70% in stable operation. It was concluded that DAF pump system with micro bubble performed higher efficiencies compared to general DAF system for treating wastewater.

  • In this study, temperature profile of the fly ash concrete were studied in accordance with the change of heating curing method combination for the slab concrete in order to develop efficient protection method of the concrete subjected to $-20^{\circ}C$. The slab concretes with the size of $1200mm{\times}600mm{\times}200mm$ were fabricated with W/B of 50% and exposed to $-20^{\circ}C$ for 7 days. Five different combinations of heat curing methods were applied to the slab concrete specimen; two combinations of heat supplying by electrical heater and surface heat insulation material such as polyethylene film and quadrupled layer bubble sheet based on heat enclosure installment; three combinations of heating coil embedment and surface heat insulation materials such as polyethylene film, sawdust and quadrupled layer bubble sheet based on heat enclosure installment. Test results showed that by applying both heating coil and bubble sheet and heat enclosure, the concrete exposed to $-20^{\circ}C$ can be effectively protected from early-age frost damage.
