  • This paper presents a method to predict the transient characteristic of the air lubricated slider head in a hard disk drive by using optimization technique. The time dependent modified Reynolds equation based on the molecular slip flow approximation equations was used to describe the fluid flow within the air bearing and the implicit finite difference scheme is applied to calculate the pressure distribution under the slider head. The exhaustive search combined with the Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno method were employed to obtain optimum design variables which are taper angle, rail width and taper length in order to keep the forces and moments acting on the slider head in dynamic equilibrium. The results show that the optimal head slider of the magnetic head has good stability characteristic that can reach the steady state within 0.5 microsecond.

  • A stochastic model using FOEA(First-Order Error-Analysis) and Monte Carlo Method is developed to predict water quality variation in a river. A sensitivity analysis using influential matrix is performed to determine the significant reaction coefficients. Also the BFGS (Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno) optimization method is applied to estimate the optimal values of the major reaction coefficients. The developed stochastic model is applied to the real study reach and the results are agreed well with those of deterministic analysis. The process for analyzing the uncertainties of the discharge, water quality and reaction coefficients of headwater and tributaries is included in the model to estimate the influence on the water quality variation at downstream. The extents of contribution of the uncertainties influencing on the total uncertainty can be evaluated from the results of the model.

  • To reduce the aerodynamic drag of high speed trains, aerodynamic drag of KTX-Sancheon was analyzed in detail according to individual components. Aerodynamic drag values of the power cars (front car, rear car) and bogies are about 42.9% and 10.1% of the total aerodynamic drag, respectively. For the aerodynamic drag reduction of a power-car, a nose shape optimization was conducted using the Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno optimum method. Shape change of a power car and bogie fairing adaptation are used to reduce the aerodynamic drag of a car body. The aerodynamic drag of the optimized train-set dropped by 15.0% compared to the aerodynamic drag of the KTX-Sancheon; a running resistance reduction of 12% is expected at the speed of 350km/h.

  • This paper presents an efficient method for updating the structural finite element model. Model updating is performed through minimizing the difference between the recorded acceleration of a real damaged structure and a hypothetical damaged one. This is performed by updating physical parameters (module of elasticity in this study) in each step using iterative process of modified nonlinear conjugate gradient (M-NCG) and modified Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno algorithm (M-BFGS) separately. These algorithms are based on sensitivity analysis and provide a solution for nonlinear damage detection problem. Three illustrative test examples are considered to assess the performance of the proposed method. Finally, it is demonstrated that the proposed method is satisfactory for detecting the location and ratio of structural damage in presence of noise.

  • In order to obtain better target identification performance, an efficient waveform design method with high range resolution and low sidelobe level for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar is proposed in this paper. First, the wideband CP-based OFDM signal is transmitted on each antenna to guarantee large bandwidth and high range resolution. Next, a complex orthogonal design (COD) is utilized to achieve code domain orthogonality among antennas, so that the spatial diversity can be obtained in MIMO radar, and only the range sidelobe on the first antenna needs suppressing. Furthermore, sidelobe suppression is expressed as an optimization problem. The integrated sidelobe level (ISL) is adopted to construct the objective function, which is solved using the Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS) algorithm. The numerical results demonstrate the superiority in performance (high resolution, strict orthogonality, and low sidelobe level) of the proposed method compared to existing algorithms.

  • This paper compared and investigated the choice of optimal algorithm affects on the directivity synthesis of linear array in the satisfaction to the design specification of the desired directivity, convergence characteristic, and adaptability. Optimal algorithms use a quasi-Newton method(DFP and BFGS method) for realizing the desired directivity, used a quasi-ideal beam, steering beam, and a multi-beam, chosen as desired directivity. In the numerical result, this paper verified the effectiveness of the quasi-Newton method to the directivity synthesis, and offered a solving approach of occurred problems in the numerical simulation process.

  • Nowadays, the viscous damper using high viscosity oil was much to be used for engine shafting system to reduce the excessive additional stress by torsional vibration. In general, it was assumed that the viscous damper could be modelled having only damping coefficient, that is to say, whose stiffness be ignored. But it is found that there exists a jump phenomenon, as a kind of non-linear vibration, in the actual engine shafting system with a damper of high viscosity. Therefore the damper ring and the casing are modelled as two mass elastic system with a complex viscosity. Also, to analyze a non-linear phenomenon, it is assumed that the viscous damper has a linear stiffness coefficient in proportion to the angular amplitude and a non-linear stiffness coefficient in proportion to cube of the angular amplitude. For the analysis, Quasi-Newton method with BFGS(Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno) formula is used. Both calculated and measured values are provided in this paper which confirm the possibility of applying non-linear theory to engine shafting system with viscous damper.

  • In this study, an optimized deterministic water-quality model was constructed to estimate water quality of a river and lake in the upstream basin of a dam. A stochastic water-quality analysis using reliability analysis technique was applied to the model. The model was tested in the 13.9 km reach from Maeil stage station of Kyechun to Hoengsung Dam of Sum River. After finding hydraulic characteristics from nonuniform flow analysis, Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS) optimization technique for model calibration was applied to determine optimum reaction parameters, and model verification was performed based on these. The stochastic model, using Mean FirstOrder Second-Moment (MFOSM) and Monte-Carlo methods, was applied to the same reach as the deterministic study. Variations of discharge and water quality in headwater were considered, as well as variations of hydraulic coefficients and reaction coefficients. The statistical results of output variables from MFOSM were similar to those from the Monte-Carlo method. Risk analysis using MFOSM and Monte-Carlo methods presented the probabilities of some locations in the Hoengsung Lake violating existing water-quality standards in terms of DO and BOD.

  • QUAL2E model was applied to assess the water quality variations due to dredging of the bottom deposit in the downstream of the Nakdong River. A variedflow analysis was performed for the reach of Namji to Nakdong Estuary to estimate the hydraulic parameters. BFGS (Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno) method was applied to determine the optimum reaction parameters and model verrification was performed based on these. Water quality modeling of dredging effects for BOD and DO in the reach was performed under low and average flow conditions and alternatives. It revealed that dredging had significant effedcts on the improvement of water quality in the reach.
