Effects of Irradiation and Fumigation on Color and Sensory Properties in the Parts of Dried Red Pepper during Storage (방사선과 훈증 처리된 건고추의 저장 중 부위별 색도 및 관능적 특성)

  • Associated with microbial decontamination and quarantine treatment of dried red pepper, the samples was gamma-irradiated (5, 10 kGy) and fumigated (methyl bromide/MeBr, phosphine/$PH_3$) to compare their Hunter's color (L, a, b, ${\Delta}E$) and sensory properties by types (whole, powder, pericarp, seed) during storage under room conditions($18{\pm}12^{\circ}C$). Whole pepper maintained higher lightness (L value) than other groups, while powdered pepper showed higher redness (a value) during storage. Immediately after treatments there was little difference in the overall color difference (${\Delta}E$) among the groups. After 8 months, a higher redness was observed in $PH_3$ group of whole pepper and 5 kGy group of powdered pepper, respectively(p<0.05). Redness of irradiated pericarps was apparently reduced following 8 months of storage and a similar pattern was found in fumigated samples. The yellowness (b value) of pepper seed was lowest in 10 kGy sample (p<0.05), but insignificant difference was observed among treatment groups with storage time. Sensory properties of whole and powdered peppery were little changed by both treatments under commercial conditions. Sensory scores of irradiated or fumigated samples were higher than that of non-treated control with storage time, which was more significant in the powdered than in the whole samples.

  • The effect of tube diameter on heat and mass transfer characteristics of absorber in absorption chiller/heater using LiBr solution as a working fluid has been investigated by both of numerical and experimental study to develop a high performance and compact absorber. The diameter of the heat exchanger tube inside absorber was changed from 15.88mm to 12.70mm and 9.52mm. In numerical study a model of vapor pressure drop inside tube absorber based on a commercial 20RT absorption chiller/heater was performed. The effect of tube diameter, longitudinal pitch, vapor Reynolds number, longitudinal pitch to diameter ratio on vapor pressure drop across the heat exchanger tube banks inside absorber have been investigated and found that vapor pressure drop decreases as tube diameter increases, longitudinal pitch increases, vapor Reynolds number decreases and longitudinal pitch to diameter ratio increases. In experimental study, a system includes a tube absorber, a generator, solution distribution system and cooling water system was set up. The experimental results shown that the overall heat transfer coefficient, mass transfer coefficient. Nusselt number and Sherwood number increase as solution flow rate increases. In both of study cases, the heat and mass transfer performance increases as tube diameter decreases. Among three different tube diameters the smallest tube diameter 9.52mm has highest heat and mass transfer performance.

Phospho-$\beta$-galactosidase gene located on plasmid in lactobacillus casei (플라스미드에 존재하는 lactobacillus casei의 phospho-$\beta$-galactosidases 유전자)

  • Plasmid DNA was isolated from Lactobacillus casei SW-M1($Lac^{+}$strain). The curing frequencies of pPLac plasmid from L. casei SW-M1 showed 43% for acriflavin treatment and 53% for ethidium bromide treatment after 3 times transfer. On the charaterization of pPLac plasmid, it was found that the plasmid contained gene encoding phospho-$\beta$-galactosidase for lactose utilization. Lactose-PTS(phosphotransferase system)was involved in membrane transport system in $Lac^{+}$ strain. Induction of phospho-$\beta$-galactosidase was specially effective by galactose, lower effect with lactose and glucose but not by IPTG(isopropyl-$\beta$-D-thiogalactoside). This result showed that induction of phospho-$\beta$-galactosidase by IPTG did not appeared. The catabolite repression of phospho-$\beta$-galactosidase synthesis by glucose was not found in L. casei.

Effects of Non-Absorbable Gases on the Absorption Process of Aqueous LiBr Solution Film in a Vertical Tube (I) (수직관내 리튬브로마이드 수용액막의 흡수과정에 대한 비흡수가스의 영향)

  • Among the heat/mass exchange units composing an absorption system, the absorber, where the refrigerant vapor is absorbed into the liquid solution is the one least understood. In the present study, the effects of non-absorbable gas on the absorption process of aqueous lithium bromide solution falling film inside a vertical tube were experimentally investigated. In the range of film Reynolds number of 30 ~ 195, heat and mass transfer characteristics were investigated as a function of non-absorbable gas volumetric concentration, 0.2 ~ 20%. An increase of non-absorbable gas volumetric concentration degraded the mass transfer rate dramatically in the absorption process. The reduction of mass transfer rate was significant for the addition of small amount of non-absorbable gas to the pure vapor. At film Reynolds number of 130, an increase of non-absorbable gas concentration from 0.2 to 6.0% resulted in the decrease of mass transfer rate by 36% and 20% of non-absorbable gas by 59%. However the decrease of film Nusselt number with the increase of volumetric concentration of non absorbable gas was relatively smaller than the decrease of Sherwood number. Critical film Reynolds number was identified to exist for the maximum heat and mass transfer regardless of the volumetric concentration of non-absorbable gases.

The Effect of Medium on the α -Effect: Nucleophilic Substitution Reaction of p-Nitrothenyl Diphenyl Phosphinate with Butane-2,3-dione Monoximate and Substituted Phenoxides in Cationic Micelles

  • Pseudo-first-order rate constants (kobs) have been determined for the nucleophilic substitution reactions of p-nitrophenyl diphenyl phosphinate (PNPDPP) with substituted phenoxides (XC6H4O - ) and butane-2,3-dione monoximate (Ox- ) in 0.1 M borate buffer (pH = 10.0) at 25.0 ${\pm}0.1^{\circ}C$. The kobs value increases sharply upon addition of cethyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) to the reaction medium up to near 7 ${\times}$ 10-4 M CTAB and then decreases smoothly upon further addition of CTAB. The rate enhancement upon the addition of CTAB is most significant for the reaction with -O2CC6H4O- and least significant for the one with C6H5O- , indicating that the reactivity of these aryloxides in the presence of CTAB cannot be determined by the basicity alone. The strength of the interaction of these anionic aryloxides with the positively charged micellar aggregates has been suggested to be an important factor to determine the reactivity in the presence of CTAB. The kobs value for the reaction with Ox- increases also upon the addition of CTAB. However, the increase in the kobs value is much more significant for the reaction with Ox- than for the one with ClC6H4O- , indicating that Ox- is less strongly solvated than ClC6H4O- in H2O. The ${\alpha}-effect$ shown by Ox- in H2O has been attributed to the ground-state solvation difference between Ox- and ClC6H4O- .

Anion-Dependent Exocyclic Mercury(II) Coordination Polymers of Bis-dithiamacrocycle

  • Synthesis and structural characterization of mercury(II) halides and perchlorate complexes (1-4) of bis-$OS_2$-macrocycle (L) are reported. L reacts with mercury(II) chloride and bromide to yield an isostructural 2D coordination polymers with type $[Hg(L)X_2]_n$ (1: X = Cl and 2: X = Br). In 1, each Hg atom which lies outside the cavity is six-coordinate with a distorted octahedral geometry, being bound to four adjacent ligands via monodentate Hg-S bonds and two remaining sites are occupied by two terminal chlorido ligands to form a fishnet-like 2D structure. When reacting with mercury(II) iodide, L afforded a 1D coordination polymer $\{[Hg_2(L)I_4]{\cdot}CHCl_3\}_n$ (3) in which each exocyclic Hg atom is four-coordinate, being bound to two sulfur donors from different ligands doubly bridging the ligand molecules in a head-to-tail mode. The coordination sphere in 3 is completed by two iodo terminal ligands, adopting a distorted tetrahedral geometry. On reacting with mercury(II) perchlorate, L forms solvent-coordinated 1D coordination polymer $\{[Hg_2(L)(DMF)_6](ClO_4)_4{\cdot}2DMF\}_n$ (4) instead of the anion-coordination. In 4, the Hg atom is five-coordinate, being bound to two sulfur donors from two different ligands doubly bridging the ligand molecules in a side-by-side mode to form a ribbon-like 1D structure. The three remaining coordination sites in 4 are completed by three DMF molecules in a monodentate manner. Consequently, the different structures and connectivity patterns for the observed exocyclic coordination polymers depending on the anions used are influenced not only by the coordination ability of the anions but also by anion sizes.

  • Beidellite, a member of the dioctahedral smectite group, was synthesized hydrothermally from dickite. Organophilic [DEACOOH]-beidellite intercalation complex was formed by the cation exchange reaction between synthetic Na-beidellite and [DEACOOH]Br. The products dried in high vacuum were treated with various organic solvent such as methanol, ethanol, acetone, ether, acetonitrile and caprolactam in order to determine the swelling behaviour of the prepared complexes. After drying under high vacuum, basal spacing of [DEACOOH]-beidellite shows 15.1 ${\AA}$, and it changed to 19.4, 29.9, 15.9, 16.8, 14.8, 26.5 and 14.8 ${\AA}$ under distilled water, methanol, ethanol, acetone, ether, acetonitrile and caporlactam, respectively. Especially, the characteristics of the intercalation complexes and their swelling behavior of the synthetic beidellite and natural montmorillonite were compared.

  • The PVC mixed silver iodide pellet was prepared by means of the Infrared Pellet presser and the pellet was used as an indicating membrane electrode, to measure the potentials for various silver ion activities, ranging from $10^{-1}$ to $10^{-6}$ M. The potential responses to silver ion activities were linear and the slope was much close to Nernstian relation as compared with that of the pure silver iodide pellet membrane electrode and the PVC coated silver iodide pellet membrane electrode. The mechanical property and chemical durability of this electrode were found much better than the others. This electrode did not show significant response to the other except silver ion, but had good response to halide ions, i.e., iodide, chloride, bromide and cyanide ions, in the concentration range $10^{-1}$ to $10^{-6}$ M. This electrode could be used as an indicating electrode in potentiometric titrations of single halide ion and also halide mixture with standard solution of silver nitrate.

  • The kinetics of the reaction of benzyl m-nitrobenzenesulfonate with m-and p-substituted N,N-dimethylanilines in acetone have been investigated by an electric conductivity method. The effects of substituents on the reactivity of N,N-dimethylaniline and the existence of linear free energy relationship were discussed. The rate constants k were in the range 2.55∼487 $10^{-4}l{\cdot}mol^{-l}{\cdot}sec^{-1} (35^{\circ}C)$ and increased with the electron donating ability of substituents. In the present reaction, the Hammett plot was correlated with ${\sigma}$ substituent constant, especially using the new ${\sigma}$ value of 0.35 in p-MeO and it's ${\rho}$ value was found to be -1.37. r value for the reaction was very large than the value obtained in the reaction of benzyl bromide. $Br{\"{o}}nsted$ linear relationship was shown between rate constant and basicites except for p-MeO resulted from solvent effect. From the Bronsted plot, this reaction was suggested that the cleavage of the C${\cdot}{\cdot}{\cdot}$O bond in the $S_N2$ transition state proceed the bond formation.

  • Archives have historical and academic values. That is why the study of preservation conditions and the environment for the effective management of various records progress. However, materials such as paper and adhesives will inevitably cause biological damages. These damages spread into the inner side of archives, which would make it impossible to recover. For example, archival records from Malaysia and Oman are easily exposed to biological damage because of these countries' hot and humid climate. As such, once records are damaged, disinfection operations are customary in these areas. Methyl bromide (MeBr) and ethylene oxide (EtO) were used in the disinfection process as they showed good insecticidal effect. However their antibacterial effect are negligible. As such, the need for an environmental-friendly fumigator was evident. An environmental-friendly fumigator is designed to improve storage stability. Such equipment is expected to contribute to prevention of damages to cultural heritages through its use of vaporization technology, maintenance of a disinfection space (chamber), and self-generation of nitrogen.
