  • Bromide($Br^-$) was separated and quantified with $2.8mM-NaHCO_3/2.2mM-Na_2CO_3$ by Ion Chromatography. Bromide was eluted at 8.9 min. and the detectetion limit was 2.5 ng. We compared with bromide concentration in normal or methylbromide intoxicated bloods and tissues. Bromide concentrations were 2.0~5.8 ppm in normal bloods and 1.0~5.3 ppm in normal tissues. In fatal cases of methylbromide intoxication, blood bromide concentrations (4 cases) of 74.2~139 ppm and tissue bromide concentration (1 case) of 76 (heart)~201 (lung) ppm were detected. In fatal cases, blood bromide concentrations. were 12~22 times higher than those of normal bloods.

  • The rate of the bromine-exchange reaction between gallium bromide and isopropyl bromide in nitrobenzene was measured at 19$^{\circ},\;25^{\circ}$ and 40$^{\circ}C$., using isopropyl bromide labelled with Br-82. The results indicated that the exchange reaction was second order with respect to gallium bromide and first order with respect to isopropyl bromide. The third-order rate constant determined at 19$^{\circ}C$. was 3.2 ${\times}10^{-2}l^2{\cdot}mole^{-2}sec^{-1}$. The activation energy, the enthalpy of activation and the entropy of activation for the exchange reaction were also determined.

  • The usage or agricultural chemicals is on the increasing tendency. Methyl bromide and organophosphate are the most widely used toxic agricultural chemicals in Korea. We try to set up the methods to detect the accumulation of these chemicals in Korean farmers. Blood samples were collected for 121 farmers of slack's season in February 1998. And survey about arable acreage and usage of the gloves and masks was also performed. Serum cholinesterase activities and bromide concentrations were measured with gold chloride method and colorimetric method. The reference ranges of serum cholinesterase activity and bromide concentration were 1.6~15.9 U/mL and below $72.9{\mu}g/mL$. Serum bromide concentrations of farmers and normal controls showed no differences. Serum cholinesterase activities of farmers were significantly higher than those of normal controls. According to the arable acreages and usage of the gloves and masks, serum bromide concentrations and cholinesterase activities showed no differences. In conclusion, serum cholinesterase activities and bromide concentrations showed no differences between farmers of slack's season and normal controls.

  • The kinetic study on the bromine-exchange reaction of antimony tribromide with ${\alpha}$-phenylethyl bromide in nitrobenzene has been carried out, using Br-82 labelled antimony tribromide. The results show that the exchange reaction is first order with respect to ${\alpha}$-phenylethyl bromide, and either second or first order with respect to antimony tribromide depending on its concentration. It is also concluded that ${\alpha}$-phenylethyl bromide exchanges bromine atom with antimony tribromide much faster than other organic bromides previously examined. Reaction mechanisms for the exchange reaction are discussed.

  • Objectives: Methyl bromide is a highly toxic substance that can cause systemic poisoning, neurotoxicity, pulmonary edema. Methyl bromide is a widespread fumigation agent used for import and export quarantine, but there is little data on exposure assessment of workers participating in such fumigation. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the exposure level of methyl bromide among workers and the concentration distribution of methyl bromide in the workplace during fumigation. Methods: For this study, one wood tent and one container fumigation area in Pusan, and one wood tent fumigation area in Incheon were investigated over three months from June 2001. Results: Methyl bromide exposure levels for container fumigation workers were from undetected to 1.86 ppm and from undetected to 2.28 ppm for tent fumigation workers as an 8 hr TWA. After opening the container door, the methyl bromide concentration in the container decreased rapidly over time, but the concentration remained over 1 ppm even after about one hour. The concentrations around the tent during its removal were highly affected by wind, but were detected in a range from undetected to 11.97 ppm. Conclusions: This study confirmed that both container and tent fumigation caused workers to exceed the exposure limit of 1 ppm as an 8 hour TWA. In particular, it could be confirmed that a situation exists in which the worker may be exposed to high concentrations of methyl bromide when opening the container or removing the tent due to the nature of the work. Therefore, it is very important to improve working methods and to wear appropriate personal protective equipment.

  • The solubilities of i-propyl bromide in nitrobenzene have been measured at 10$^{\circ}$, 19$^{\circ}$ and 25$^{\circ}C$ in the presence and absence of gallium bromide. In the presence of gallium bromide, 1 : 1 complex, i-C$_3$H$_7Br{\cdot}GaBr_3$ is formed in the solution. The instability constant K of the complex formation was evaluated from the following equilibrium equation: i-C$_3$H$_7Br{\cdot}GaBr_3$ ${\rightleftharpoons}$ i-C$_3$H$_7$Br + $\frac{1}{2}$$Ga_2Br_6$. The change of enthalpy, free energy and entropy for the dissociation of the complex were also calculated. From these result, it seems that the stabilities of the complex formation, gallium bromide with alkyl bromide, are directly related with those of the carbonium ions of alkyl bromide.

  • This study was conducted to supply basic informations on development of water treatment process for the ozonation of ammonia depend on pH variation with or without bromide catalysis. The results were as follows: The oxidation rate of ammonia increased depend on pH increase at ozone/bromide process. It was found that overall kinetics was zero order with respect to reaction time and reaction velocity constant of zero order increased depend on pH increase from 4.9 to 9.5 and the equation of linearization was $k_{o}$ = 0.00565 ${\times}$ [pH] + 0.0069 at ozone/bromide process. The denitrification reaction of ammonia was superior as the pH increase in the presence of bromide.

  • Mercurous Bromide ($Hg_2Br_2$) crystals hold promise for many acousto-optic and opto-electronic applications. This material is prepared in closed ampoules by the physical vapor transport (PVT) growth method. We investigate the effects of solutal convection on the crystal growth rate in a horizontal configuration for diffusive-convection conditions and purely diffusion conditions achievable in a low gravity environment. Our results show that the growth rate is decreased by a factor of one-fourth with a ten reduction of gravitational acceleration near y = 2.0 cm. For 0.1 $g_O$ the growth rate pattern exhibits relatively flat which is intimately related to diffusion-dominated processes. The growth rate nonuniformity is regardless of aspect ratio across the interfacial positions from 0 to 1.5. Also, the effect of a factor of the ten reduction in the gravitational acceleration is same to both Ar = 5 and 2. The enlargement in the molecular weight of B from 50 to 500 by a factor 4 causes a decrease in the maximum growth rate by the same factor, indicative of the effect of solutal gradients.
