  • Egg production traits are economically important both for egg-laying and broiler lines of chicken. In sheep, the Q249R mutation in BMPR-IB is associated with ovulation rate. The present study cloned a partial chicken BMPR-IB fragment which contained the corresponding ovine Q249R mutation, including partial exon 6 and exon 7 and full-length intron 6. Five nucleotide changes were identified by alignment of the fragment amplified from Jining Bairi and Zang chickens. Among these nucleotide substitutions, the C/T transition at the base position of 35 and the A/G transition at the base position of 287 were found to be highly polymorphic, and named as SNPs C35T and A287G, respectively. For the SNP C35T, 331 hens of a synthetic broiler line were genotyped by a PCR-SSCP approach and allele C was found to be dominant. For the SNP A287G, 604 birds from the synthetic broiler line, a commercial egg-laying line, as well as three Chinese indigenous chicken breeds were genotyped by a PCR-RFLP technique. The associations of these two SNPs with egg production traits in the broiler line were analyzed. The results indicated that both the C35T and the A287G SNPs were not associated with egg production at 33wks and from 33wks to 42 wks (p>0.1), whereas the SNP A287G was associated with egg production from 47 to 56 wks (p<0.05). The dominance genetic effects on this latter trait and on egg production from 33 to 42 wks were significant (p<0.05).

  • The broiler marketing managers at department stores were most considered the brand whereas those at supermarket were most considered price when they purchased raw chicken. The whole chicken was distributed as fresh by 100% at department stores, whereas it was distributed as fresh only by 75% and the rest part was distributed as frozen or combination of fresh and frozen at supermarket. Consumers at department stores were most unsatisfied with drip loss whereas consumers at supermarket were most unsatisfied with freshness of chicken. At present, more than 89% broiler are selling by their weight unit of a bird (called as ho) in department stores, food chain stores and supermarket. The marketing periods were 3 days at department stores and 4days at supermarket. Most broiler marketing managers in stores such as 80% those at department stores, 60% those at food chain stores and 50% those at supermarkets were favored for the grading system based on quality of raw chicken. The broiler marketing managers at department stores and food chain stores preferred to the grading system evaluated with 2 quality grades and those at supermarkets preferred to the grading system evaluated with 3 quality grades if the grading system is to be established. The drumsticks and drummette of broiler were the most popular portions when compared to the other portions. In conclusion, marketing stores as well as consumers demanded to produce the best quality chicken by the grading system based on quality. Therefore, the quality improvement is the most important factor to increase consumer preference in chicken production.

  • A broiler farm in Jeonbuk province experienced high mortality due to decreased feed intake and poor growth, and pathological evaluation of 11- and 17-day-old broilers was performed, which led to the diagnosis of runting-stunting syndrome. From the start of the rearing period to shipment, 18.4% of the chickens in the three barns experiencing continuous culling and mortality were affected, compared to 7.7% in the other five barns. Gross findings on the 11-day-old broiler chicken revealed proventricular dilatation and hemorrhage, intestinal hemorrhage, urate deposition in the pericardium and renal tubule, nephropathy, and mild hepatic capsulitis. Similar proventricular dilatation and hemorrhage were observed in the 17-day-old broiler chickens. In addition, hepatitis and pericarditis were observed with the progression of secondary bacterial infection, and pathogenic Escherichia coli was isolated from these lesions. As a result of PCR, Newcastle disease virus, fowl adenovirus, chicken anemia virus and Marek's disease virus were not detected in the all tissue samples. In contrast, infectious bronchitis virus was detected in the proventriculus, kidney and cecal tonsil. chicken astrovirus was detected in the intestine, cecal tonsil and bursa of Fabricius, and chicken parvovirus was detected in proventriculus, intestine, cecal tonsil and bursa of Fabricius. By sharing the diagnostic process of a case of malabsorption syndrome through this case report, we hope that it can be widely utilized in the diagnostic process of livestock disease pathognomonic institutions.

  • A 35-day trial was carried out to determine the influence of dietary cinnamon powder (CNP) on the sensory evaluation and quality of chicken meat, carcass characteristics, plasma lipid level and growth performance of broiler chickens. There were 5 treatment groups: control; CNP 2.0%; CNP 3.0%; CNP 4.0%; and CNP 5.0%. The body weight of the broilers fed the diets containing 3.0% CNP was higher than the broilers fed the control feeds (p<0.05). The concentration of triacylglyceride, HDL-C was higher in the plasma from broiler chickens fed diets with CNP (p<0.05) but the concentrations of total cholesterol and LDL-C were significantly lower (p<0.05) compared to the control group. The carcass percentage, chicken breast and thigh weight were not different between the CNP and control groups. The WHC was significantly higher in the chickens fed 4% CNP diet, while the TBARS was significantly lower (p<0.05) in the chickens fed 3% CNP diet compared to the control group. The color of the breast muscle from the chickens fed 3% CNP diet was lighter than those from the control groups (p<0.05). The sensory evaluation of the taste and savor related to CNP in fried or boiled chicken meat were significantly better from the broiler chicken fed diets containing CNP than the control group (p<0.05). These results suggest that dietary cinnamon powder may improve savor and quality of chicken meat in broiler chickens.

  • Abdominal fat pad from farmed Korean ring-necked pheasants that had scanty fat depot was characterized in terms of adipocyte size as determined by free fat cells liberated by collagenase incubation. Similar parameters was also measured in the broiler chicken with similar body weight to those of pheasants. The adipocyte from pheasants was much smaller than that of broiler chicken. The results of this study suggested that the scanty development of abdominal fat pad in the pheasants appeared to be due to a smaller size of adipocyte.

  • A 16-wk feeding trial was conducted to investigate the proper feeding regimen on the performance of Korean Native Chicken(KNC) consuming broiler diets. Commercial KNC are normally fed 3 kinds of diets during their life span, i. e., starter(S, 0 to 3wk of age), grower(G, 4 to 7wk of age), and finisher(F, 8 to l6wk of age) diets. In this trial, four feeding regimen were employed:T1(S-G-F), T2(S-G-G), T3(S-S-F), and T4(S-F-F). Day-old 360 KNC were randomly allotted to 12 pens: three pens per treatment, and 30 birds per pen. At the end of the trial, the BW of T2 was significantly better than that of T3(P<0.05), and T1 and T4 were intermediate. No significant difference were found in feed intake, feed conversion ratio, and viability among treatments. It appears that, in terms of BW gain, the T2 is the recommendable feeding regimen for KNC consuming broiler diets.

  • The experiment was conducted to study the comparative pathology of hemic system among three different broiler chicken strains i.e. Hubbard (H), Lohmann (L) and Indian River (IR) suffering from experimentally induced Hydropericardium Syndrome (HPS). For this 50 chicks of each strain were inoculated with HPS inoculum at the age of 21 days and other 50 chicks of each broiler strain were kept as uninoculated control. After slaughtering each bird of both groups was subjected to pathological examination of heart, spleen and aorta and also for determining routine haematological parameters. The maximum values of Total Erythrocyte Count (TEC), heterophils and thrombocytes and the minimum values of Total Leukocyte Count (TLC) and Hemoglobin (Hb) content were found in H broiler strain. Percentage of monocytes, basophils and eosinophils also showed maximum decrease in H broiler chicken strain. Gross pathological lesions in the inoculated birds revealed that the heart showed ballooning due to distention of pericardial sac with pericardial fluid. Haemorrhages on the epicardium and flabbiness of the myocardium. Under the microscope, degenerative changes in myocardial tissue were seen. Lesions in the spleen included splenomegaly and haemorrhagic spots. Aorta showed flabbiness of the wall and disruption of endothelium. It is concluded that there is a marked difference in susceptibility of HPS among three different commercial broiler strains. The Hubbard broiler strain is more susceptible which is followed by the Indian River and Lohmann respectively.

  • The objective of this study was to determine the effect of dietary oils on the levels of the ${\gamma}-linolenic$ acid in chicken meat lipids. Three hundred ten five, 1-d old, male, Ross strain, broiler chicks were fed for 35 d to compare diets containing evening primrose oil(EPO) and hemp seed oil(HO) to a control diet. Fatty acid composition of lipid from chicken skin, thigh and breast muscle were determined at the end of the trial. The level of ${\gamma}-linolenic$ acid of lipids from chicken meat fed diets containing EPO or HO was significantly higher than that of the control group(p<0.05). The level of ${\gamma}-linolenic$ acid of lipids from chicken skin was highest in the group, which had been fed the EPO 0.85%, followed in order by EPO 0.7%, 0.5%, EPO mixed oil, HO and HO mixed oil. There was a significant difference in the level of ${\gamma}-linolenic$ acid of chicken skin between the control and treatment groups(p<0.05). The level of ${\gamma}-linolenic$ acid of lipids from chicken thigh muscle was also similar to skin, and significantly higher than that of the control group(p<0.05). The level of ${\gamma}-linolenic$ acid of lipids from chicken breast muscle was highest in the group, which had been fed the EPO 0.5%, followed in order by EPO 0.7%, 0.85%, HO 0.5% and HO mixed oil. There was a significant difference in the level of ${\gamma}-linolenic$ acid of chicken breast muscle between the control and treatment groups(p<0.05).

  • While the darkling beetle, Alphitobius diaperinus (Panzer) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) is considered a pest of stored products, it does not pose a significant economic threat to this industry. The grains these beetles feeding on are often already damaged. However, the beetle is now being treated as the foremost premise pest in the poultry industry in many countries of the world. Recently, the darkling beetle has also infested in broiler chicken houses of Korea. The problems caused by this pest destroy the insulate facilities of poultry houses, reduce chick's overall performance, transmit pathogenic organisms, and have been leading to substantial economic losses for poultry producers. Therefore, we conducted surveys on the status of infestation and damage of this pest in broiler chicken houses. Because there is no simple one step process that will completely eliminate darkling beetle populations from broiler facilities, we would like to outline further studies on the proper control measures.
