The Future of Radio and its Role in the Era of Smart Media (스마트미디어 시대 속 라디오의 미래와 역할 고찰)

  • Radio, the first broadcasting medium in history, is also the first mobile medium that meets the currently mobile ecology based on mobile communications network. As a result, it is easily approachable to consumers, can easily engage individual consumers, and its program contents have a huge appealing power to individual listeners, allowing it to form intimacy with audiences at the closest distance. However, the listening rating of radio has decreased greatly because it has experienced various changes by many other competitive media such as TV and internet and it has been influenced by relative constant hypothesis. Also, radio now faces a bigger competition due to the emergence of smartphone. In this circumstance, radio showed movements to evolve into a digital radio that presents improved sound, strengthened reception power, and increased number of channels, but it suddenly changed to DMB and portable multimedia DMB is having huge problems in its marketability due to smartphone. Yet, the listening rating of analogue radio broadcasting that remained unchanged was 13.99% in 2014, an increase by 47% from 2011, and the percentage of listeners under the age of 18 increased by 2.4 times from 2011 to 2014, which was a unique and interesting phenomenon. Accordingly, this paper compared the characteristics of internet and radio that have the traits of daily life, information, individuality, participatory, adventurousness, alternative media, expertise, and sound media. The paper then examined the listening method of radio, in which the direct groundwave antenna reception through a vehicular device is the most common form during the use of transportation means. Finally, it sought to investigate the future of radio based on the understanding of the increase in radio listening ratings, especially by comparing it to the characteristics of smart generation that focus on smartphone and the internet The study results demonstrated that entertainment and amusements are attempting at changes while they used to be obtained selectively by the smart generation from fragmentary information. In addition, radio is expected to become an influential medium in the future through its advantages of 'selected information' and reliability. However, considering such possibilities, radio needs to build the expertise and reliability of broadcasting contents much more at the same time as its digitalization, and it will be able to have its own competitiveness by focusing on various experiences and cultural exposures.

  • A condition access system (CAS) refers to a hardware-based system that allows only authenticated users to have access to contents. The CAS has many disadvantages found in that in the replacement of multiple service operator (MSO) a set-top box should be also changed and the smart-card often causes malfunction. To deal with the problems, exchangeable CAS (XCAS) was developed in 2009. However, in the XCAS, no method to authenticate a proper set-top box has been put forward. In this paper, we propose a novel program for set-top authentication in the XCAS. Additionally, we offer a format of certificate of authentication, and procedures of issuing the certificate for broadcasting services suitable for the XCAS. The technical method of authentication a set-top box that will be discussed is of high efficiency since in the MSO it requires only two subjects to communicate during the authentication in the MSO.

  • This paper presents a digital video broadcasting - terrestrial (DVB-T) receiver system based on the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation method, which has exhibited a good reception performance even with obstacles and a mobile reception. As such, an improved OFDM receiver is developed for a DVB-T system that also considers function expansion for further development. After manufacturing the DVB-T receiver system, the performance of the proposed system is compared with three other hardware systems, all of which are end products. The experimental results confirm the performance using the measured minimum required carrier-to-noise ratio and threshold of visibility signal for each system. In addition, a graphic user interface (GUI) and electronic program guide (EPG) are developed for the digital television user.

A Study on the Semantic Network Structure of the Regime in the Image Contents (영상콘텐츠분야의 정권별 의미연결망 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the semantic network analysis to understand image contents and to examine the degree to which words, word clusters contributed to the formation of semantic map within image contents. For this research, from 1993 until 2016 the field of the image contents were collected for a total of 2,624 cases papers. The word appeared in Title analyzed the social network by using the R program of Big Data. The results were as follows: First, The field of image contents is based on researches related to 'image', 'media' and 'contents'. Second, there is a three-step flow ('education' -> 'media' -> 'contents') of research in the field of image contents. Third, researches related to 'broadcasting', 'digital', 'technology', and 'production' were continuously carried out. Finally, There were new research subjects for each regime.

A Study on Stable Operation of Li-ion Battery Charging/Discharging System (Li-ion 배터리 충/방전 시스템의 안정적 운영에 관한 연구)

  • When the operation of battery is converted at charging and discharging system based on a DC micro grid, the voltage is fluctuated. And excessive voltage fluctuation could cause damage or failure of charging and discharging equipment. Therefore, in this paper, we studied the operating schedule of the charging and discharging system based on the DC micro grid and a design point of the capacitor which was able to reduce the voltage fluctuation. A result of computer simulation showed that when a fluctuation-reducing capacitor which had an initial value of 600V/35mF was applied at the charging and discharging system based on a DC micro grid which was operated with three charging battery sets and five discharging battery sets, voltage fluctuation by charging and discharging operation was reduced by about 63.3%. Furthermore, voltage fluctuation which occurred when initial network voltage was stabilized was reduced by about 73%.

  • This paper presents a unified live-streaming method based on Hypertext Mark-up Language 5(HTML5) for an IP camera which is independent of browsers of clients and is implemented with open-source libraries. Currently, conventional security systems based on analog CCTV cameras are being modified to newer surveillance systems utilizing IP cameras. These cameras offer remote surveillance and monitoring regardless of the device being used at any time, from any location. However, this approach needs live-streaming protocols to be implemented in order to verify real-time video streams and surveillance is possible after installation of separate plug-ins or special software. Recently, live streaming is being conducted through HTML5 using two different standard protocols: HLS and DASH, that works with Apple and Android products respectively. This paper proposes a live-streaming approach that is linked on either of the two protocols which makes the system independent with the browser or OS. The client is possible to monitor real-time video streams without the need of any additional plug-ins. Moreover, by implementing open source libraries, development costs and time were economized. We verified usefulness of the proposed approach through mobile devices and extendability to other various applications of the system.

  • A Digital TV system is necessary for data Processing as well as video and audio processing. Especially in the case of interactive broadcasting, it should manage returning channel created by the Internet, PSTN, and so on. Because of many functionalities and multitasking jobs, it needs an Operating System. Embedded Linux as open source program can increase a cost effectiveness in market and has many advantages - reusable device drivers and application programs, more convenient developing environment using shell and file system, and easy problem resolution within Open Source Community. In this paper, we modified Embedded Linux kernel and cross developing environment for a big-endian system, redesigned devices for kernel execution, and configured system memory map in order to load a linux kernel. Also we developed an device driver for entire system control.

Automatic Generation Method of Exceptional Test Cases for improving User Requirement Quality on Broadcast Receiver Software (방송 수신 소프트웨어의 사용자 요구 품질 향상이 가능한 예외상황 테스트케이스 자동생성 기법)

  • Testing is an important part of quality control in the software life cycle. One of the most important issues in the software testing is to generate the appropriate test cases. Generally, the software can be tested based on product understanding. However, it is not easy to create test cases that can ensure the quality of the software according to the clients' request. Especially, it is difficult to create test cases for abnormal or exceptional situations. In this paper, we present a novel approach to generate exceptional test cases at the design level of UML model. Furthermore, we describe the results of actual experiment where DAB(Digital Audio Broadcasting) parsing program is tested with previous method and also with the proposed method. The results implies that our proposed method of generating test cases for exceptional situations detect more faults than that of previous method by 7.08%.

Mechanism of Windowing of Domestic Free TV Programs (국내 지상파 방송 콘텐츠의 창구화 메커니즘 분석)

  • Domestic free TVs play roles as for contents provider and TV station : they need to acquire not only ad revenues but also distribution revenues from internet service, cable channel and DMB. It is however doubtful to keep the windowing of programs through the different windows due to recent decrease of ad revenues of the stations. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to search for the mechanism of windowing of free TV's programs and the strategy of the distribution. As a result, the life cycle of the broadcasting programs is so short to be distributed within 7 days, Regarding the windowing, there are at first the strategy increasing the accumulated revenue by the diversification of the windows ; secondly, the strategy focusing on the prospective window neglecting the holdback. It is necessary to choose to take the appropriate strategy by the particularity of each program and the market background.

The Character of Contents Production System in the Comprehensive Programming Channels (종합편성채널의 콘텐츠 생산 방식의 특성)

  • It has become five years since comprehensive programming licenses were rendered in Korea. Allocating a lion's share of their air time on live news and news commentaries, those channels have established a unique live production system or a broadcasting system which is heavily live production-oriented, to be exact. The live commentaries are filled with a mixture of news flashes, conventional news commentaries, and debates. Those channels get their news and commentary programs made through subsidiaries' where production directors and studio staffs belong. They, being very sensitive about viewer rating, tend to be aggressive about reruns of highly rated programs and they do not even seem to care when the regular programs actually went out. This kind of reckless strategy to pursue a higher viewer rating could limit not only new programming attempts but also exposure diversity.
