  • In this paper, we designed and implemented a dual band chip antenna for WLAN, which contains within the small LAN card contrary to the enternal AP(Access Point) antenna. Limiting about the antenna size, we used dielectrics of high permittivity. Totally considering problems of demand-supply, price and characteristics, we used that relative dielectrics of ceramic is 9.8 and the thickness is 3.5mm and 5mm. Ceramic antenna can be used not only triple mode of IEEE 802.11.a,g and b but also broadband. The frequency bands have wideband characteristics of 2.4~2.5GHz and 4.9~5.85GHz and relatively constant performance.

  • The wireless asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) system has the advantage of providing the broadband services with various quality-of-service requirements to the mobile terminal efficiently by utilizing the ATM technology developed for the wired ATM system. The available bit rate (ABR) service among various ATM services utilizes the available bandwidth remaining in the ATM link, which allows the efficient bandwidth usage. During the handoff of the mobile terminal, however, the queue length in the access point (AP) which resides in the boundary of the wired ATM network and the wireless ATM network may increase abruptly. In this paper, we propose a scheme which prevents the buffer-overflow and buffer-underflow in the AP during the handoff of the wireless ABR connection in the wireless ATM system using binary feedback rate-based ABR traffic control. This scheme controls the source's cell generation rate during both handoff period and some time interval after the completion of the handoff procedure. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme prevents the buffer-overflow and buffer-underflow. The proposed scheme can contribute to increasing the throughput of the wireless ABR service during handoff by preventing the buffer overflow and underflow during handoff period.

  • Wireless mesh networks can be deployed for various networks from home networking to last-mile broadband Internet access. Wireless mesh networks are composed of mesh routers and mesh clients. In these networks, static nodes form a multi-hop backbone of a large wireless access network that provides connectivity to end-users' mobile terminals. The network nodes cooperate with each other to relay data traffic to its destinations. In order to increase connectivity and better performance, researchers are getting interested in multi-channel and multi-interface wireless mesh networks. In these networks, non-overlapping multiple frequency channels are used simultaneously to increase the aggregate bandwidth available to end-users. Recently, researches have focused on finding suitable channel assignments for wireless network interfaces, equiped in a mesh node, together with efficient routing to improve overall system throughput in wireless mesh networks. This goal can be achieved by minimize channel interference. Less interference among using channels in a network guarantees more aggregated channel capacity and better connectivity of the networks. In this thesis, we propose interference aware channel assignment and routing algorithms for multi-channel multi-hop wireless mesh networks. We propose Channel Assignment and Routing algorithms using Traffic Profiles(CARTP) and Routing algorithms allowing detour routing(CARTP+2). Finally, we evaluate the performance of proposed algorithms in comparison to results from previous methods using ns-2 simulations. The simulation results show that our proposed algorithms can enhance the overall network performance in wireless mesh networks.

  • This paper proposes a unified time-domain channel estimator (UTD-CE) for ubiquitous wireless broadband access based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. As a part of a software radio platform for ubiquitous services, the proposed UTD-CE can be exploited with the simply changeable parameters, pilot symbols and pilot subcarriers allocation, which are usually different according to the system specifications such as IEEE802.11x WiFI, IEEE802.16x WiMAX, DMB, Media FLO, DVB-H, etc. Given the pilot information, the channel frequency responses (CFRs) of data subcarriers will be analogously estimated by Wiener filtering and discrete Fourier transform (DFT)-based interpolation in the UTD-CE. Simulation results indicate that the proposed method significantly outperforms the conventional time-domain channel estimator when the pilot information is changed.

  • Mobile operators will face many challenges both economically and technically, as WLAN evolve through a bewildering number of different standards during the coming years. Potentially this will require several upgrades to the mobile infrastructure. A new approach for addressing these challenges is evaluated in this paper. It is based on a radio over fiber (RoF) technology that uses electro-absorption modulator (EAM) and optical single sideband (OSSB) modulation technique and it promises to provide solutions that will be transparent to changes in protocols and frequency of operation as well as reducing radio access infrastructure costs. This paper describes the development of prototype RoF system based on the 60GHz band CATV transport distribution system with EAM and the possibility of radio over fiber technology for use in the broadband convergence network (BcN) wireless access infrastructure.

  • With the increasing deployment of mobile devices and the advent of broadband wireless access systems such as WiBro, WiMAX, and HSDPA, an efficient IP mobility management protocol becomes one of the most important technical issues for the successful deployment of the broadband wireless data networking service. IETF has proposed the Mobile IPv6(MIPv6) as the basic mobilitymanagement protocol for IPv6 networks. To enhance the performance of the basic MIPv6, researchers have been actively working on HMIPv6 and FMIPv6 protocols. In this paper, we propose a new mobility management protocol, HIMIPv6 (Highly Integrated MIPv6), which tightly integrates the hierarchical mobility management mechanism of the HMIPv6 and the proactive handover support of the FMIPv6 to enhance the handover performance especially for the cellular networking environment with high frequent handover activities. We have performed extensive simulation study using ns-2 and the results show that the proposed HIMIPv6 outperforms MIPv6, FMIPv6 and HMIPv6 in terms of signaling overhead, service interruption and packet lost during handovers.

  • IEEE 802.16 Wireless MAN standard specifies the air interface of fixed point-to-multipoint broadband wireless access systems providing multiple service. Among the service classes supported by the wireless MAN, the BE class is ranked on the lowest position in priority and is usually deployed by multicast and broadcast polling MAC scheme. In provisioning such BE service, the delay performance is influenced by a number of components including restrictions on resource request per SS, the number of request opportunities in upward frame, scheduling requests at BS, and contention resolution method. As candidate components of MAC function for BE service, we propose single and multiple request schemes (for controling the number of requests per SS), exhaustive and limited request schemes (for regulating the amount of grant per request) and FCFS, H-SMF, pure SMF, SS-wise Round Robin, and pure Round Robin (for scheduling requests at BS). Then, we construct MAC schemes by combining the above components and evaluate the delay performance exhibited by each MAC scheme using a simulation method. From numerical results, we investigate the effect of MAC components on average delay and delay variation and observe the dissonance on collision reduction in a resource - limited environment.

  • IEEE 802.16 Wireless MAN standard specifies the air interface of fixed point-to-multipoint broadband wireless access systems providing multiple services. Among the service classes supported by the wireless MAN, the best effort service class is ranked on the lowest position in priority and is assisted by a MAC scheme based on reservation ALOHL Such MAC scheme must include a number of components, while many of them are not specified in the standard. In this paper, we thus reveal main components of a MAC scheme supporting the best effort service and present candidate schemes implementing such components. Combining schemes for implementing components, we then construct distinctive MAC schemes supporting best effort service. In designing a MAC scheme, the delay performance induced by the scheme should be considered since scarce resource may be available for the best effort service after the preemptive resource occupation by other service classes. In this paper, we focus on the delay fairness among the subscriber stations using the best effort service. For evaluating a MAC scheme in delay fairness, we present two definitions of delay fairness and provide a criterion for optimal MAC scheme according to each definition of delay fairness. Using a simulation method we investigate the mean delay performance exhibited by each MAC scheme arid find an optimal scheme in delay fairness. From numerical examples, we observe that SR/ED/PG+P scheme has strong delay fairness compared with MR/ED/PG+P and SR/ED/PG+D schemes according to a definition of delay fairness. However, other schemes are rather shown to have better delay fairness when the other definition is adopted.

  • Bluetooth wireless technology is a publicly available specification proposed for Radio Frequency (RF) communication for short-range and point-to- multipoint voice and data transfer. It operates in the 2.4GHz ISM(Industrial, Scientific and Medical) band and offers the potential for low-cost, broadband wireless access for various mobile and portable devices at range of about 10 meters. In this paper, we describe the structure and the test results of the bluetooth baseband module we have developed. This module was developed based on IP reuse. So Interface of each module such as link controller UART, and audio CODEC is designed based on ARM7 comfortable processor. We also considered various interfaces of related external chips. The fully synthesizable baseband module was fabricated in a $0.25{\mu}m$ CMOS technology occupying $2.79{\times}2.8mm^2$ area including the ARM TDMI processor. And a FPGA implementation of this module is tested for file and bit-stream transfers between PCs.
