  • This paper presents design methodologies for 5G architecture ensuring lower latency than 4G/LTE. Among various types of 5G use cases discussed in standardization bodies, we believe mobile broadband, massive IoT(Internet of Things) and mission-critical IoT will be the main 5G use cases. In particular, a mission-critical IoT service such as remote controlled machines and connected cars is regarded as one of the most distinguished use cases, and it is indispensable for underlying networks to support sufficiently low latency to support them. We identify three main strategic directions for end-to-end network latency reduction, namely new radio access technologies, distributed/flat network architecture, and intelligent end-to-end network orchestration.

  • IEEE 802.16e has many points to be improved. Among them, fast handover is essential when user moves in high speed. In this paper we proposed a fast handover scheme using handover candidate BS set. This scheme is based on IEEE 802.16e, however according to the performance evaluation results through simulation; our proposed scheme shows more than 30% of handover delay reduction and at least 5% of handover drop probability improvement.

  • Recently, broadband access networks have been competitively deployed all over the world with the development of various multimedia services for such a network. ETRI(Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute) built the FTTH(Fiber-to-the-Home) service center to develop a next-generation equipment and a high-quality service/platform as well as to promote domestic industry in the field of optical communication. The FTTH service center has a variety of test equipments such as FTTH standard testbed for a BMT(Bench Mark Test), a network operation center, and IPTV service equipments. Also, ETRI deployed a new type of commercial optical access networks cooperating with ISP(Internet service provider). In this paper, we analyzed the quality degradation appeared in QoE(Quality of Experience), when IP data broadcasted from the FTTH service center is transmitted to subscribers through the commercial optical access network. Moreover, we proposed a noble solution to address this problem.

  • Since its conception, the Internet has been exponentially growing and recent forecasts state that by the year 2011 almost one-quarter of the world's population will have internet access and few places have seen the radical effects of this new technology as strongly as south Korea which currently has the highest percentage of broadband users in the world with over 70% of its homes running at over 2Mbit/s. This explosion has revolutionized the way the industries, including that of the hospitality industry have conducted their businesses. The main challenge of this study was to explore how customers are currently using the Internet when developing purchase intentions. Customers were asked, through surveys, to evaluate four specific factors: format, accuracy, content and timeliness (FACT) in terms of their importance when making a restaurant choice. The findings of this study were as follows: content influenced the customer satisfaction, as well as timeliness influenced the customer satisfaction. But the other factor of the information didn't have interaction with the customer satisfaction. Customer satisfaction influenced the loyalty.

  • The paper discusses the ICT infrastructure as far as the availability of (computers, local or wide area networks, Internet connectivity and its reliability, size of the bandwidth and its optimization, etc.) in the S&T research institution. It also examined the profile of the research scientists and looked at the type of ICT infrastructure that is available for their use as well as the reliability of the Internet connectivity within these research institutions. It looked at the broadband capacities of the research institutions and the ICT capabilities in respect of the technical and managerial support back-up that are available to the research institutions. The study used the survey research method with a questionnaire as well as personal observation to gather the data. From the data gathered, it was realized that the internet connectivity and the size of the bandwidth that the R&D institutions subscribed to differed significantly. Again, the extent to which the research scientists were able to access the internet in their respective institutions depended on the quality of the local network in place. Generally, the investments in ICT were made for different management objectives, and these were meant to facilitate the generation of new knowledge as well as make measurable improvements in R&D activities.

  • While Long Term Evolution-Frequency Division Duplexing (LTE-FDD) is regarded as one of the strong candidates for "4G" wireless broadband access in FDD field, LTE-Time Division Duplexing (TDD) is emerging as one possible migration path for WiMAX-TDD in some cases as well as the migration path for Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access (TD-SCDMA). In this paper, we analyze the feasibility of dual mode with LTE-TDD in two combinations: dual mode LTE-FDD/TDD and dual mode Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX)-TDD/LTE-TDD. Thanks to the commonality in numerology, terminology, and frame structure between LTE-FDD and LTE-TDD, dual mode LTE-FDD/TDD looks feasible in a cost-effective manner. Thanks to the commonality in scheduling algorithm, control mechanism, and supported spectrum bands, it is shown that dual mode WiMAX-TDD/LTE-TDD looks feasible as well. It should be also noted that the commonality in numerology and frame structure is critical for building a chip while the commonality in algorithms and control mechanisms is critical to make it work.

  • WiMAX has been introduced as a competitive alternative for metropolitan broadband wireless access technologies. It is connection oriented and it can provide very high data rates, large service coverage, and flexible quality of services (QoS). Due to the large number of connections and flexible QoS supported by WiMAX, the uplink access in WiMAX networks is very challenging since the medium access control (MAC) protocol must efficiently manage the bandwidth and related channel allocations. In this paper, we propose and investigate a cost-effective WiMAX bandwidth management scheme, named the WiMAX partial sharing scheme (WPSS), in order to provide good QoS while achieving better bandwidth utilization and network throughput. The proposed bandwidth management scheme is compared with a simple but inefficient scheme, named the WiMAX complete sharing scheme (WCPS). A maximum entropy (ME) based analytical model (MEAM) is proposed for the performance evaluation of the two bandwidth management schemes. The reason for using MEAM for the performance evaluation is that MEAM can efficiently model a large-scale system in which the number of stations or connections is generally very high, while the traditional simulation and analytical (e.g., Markov models) approaches cannot perform well due to the high computation complexity. We model the bandwidth management scheme as a queuing network model (QNM) that consists of interacting multiclass queues for different service classes. Closed form expressions for the state and blocking probability distributions are derived for those schemes. Simulation results verify the MEAM numerical results and show that WPSS can significantly improve the network’s performance compared to WCPS.

  • In this paper, we describe the implementation and performance of a dual-mode Software Define Radio (SDR) smart antenna base station system. SDR technology enables a communication system to be reconfigured through software downloads to the flexible hardware platform that is implemented using programmable devices such as Digital Signal Processors (DSPs), Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), and microprocessors. The presented base station channel card comprises the physical layer (pHY) including the baseband modem as well as the beamforming module. This channel card is designed to support TDD High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) as well as Wireless Broadband Portable Internet (WiBro) utilizing the SDR technology. We first describe the operations and functions required in WiBro and TDD HSDPA. Then, we explain the channel card design procedure and hardware implementation. Finally, we evaluate WiBro and TDD HSDPA performance by simulation and actual channel-card-based processing. Our smart antenna base-station dual-mode channel card shows flexibility and tremendous performance gains in terms of communication capacity and cell coverage.

  • In this paper, we propose a MLKA (Multi-Level Keep-Alive) algorithm based on PRCG (Periodic In this paper, we propose a MLKA (Multi-Level Keep-Alive) algorithm based on PRCG (Periodic Ranging Code Group), in which periodic ranging codes are divided into groups. The AP (Access Point) performs this algorithm when a periodic ranging code arrives at the AP in a WiBro (Wireless Broadband Internet) system. In order to increase the traffic radio bandwidth resource efficiency in this system, we propose the multi-level keep-alive algorithm for finding abnormal AT (Access Terminal). From simulation results, it is verified our proposed MLKA algorithm based on PRCG can provide higher traffic radio resource efficiency compared to message-driven keep-alive algorithms.
