Electron beam (EB) and Gas tungsten arc (TIG) welds were performed on 12.7 mm thick Ti-6Al-4V plate (ASTM Titanium Grade 5). Charpy-V toughness and hardness, as well as, microstructure of the welds and penetration from the macrostructure were studied. It appears that by EB welding rather smaller $\beta$-grains than with TIG welding can be obtained. Next to the fusion line the $\beta$-grain size in the HAZ was 50 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$l while in the weld metal it was 150 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Charpy-V toughness of the EB weld metal was equal or even better to that of base metal, which shows that the $\alpha$-martensite per se is not particularly brittle if only the grain size is fine enough. This is similar to behavior of low carbon martensite in steel. The grain size was studied with light optical and scanning electron (SEM) microscopes. Thus for products, for products which can be manufactured automatically with very narrow fit, the EB welding of Ti-6Al-4V appears to yield satisfactory toughness without any complex post weld heat treatment. ill this study as in earlier studies the TIG welds gave lower toughness than that of the base material due to the higher heat input and slower cooling as compared to EB welding.
A sliding friction and wear test for silicon nitride (Si,N4) was conducted using a ball-on-disk specimen configuration. The material used in this study was HIPed silicon nitride. The tests were carried out from room temperature to 1000$^{\circ}C$ using self-mated silicon nitride couples in laboratory air. The worn surfaces were observed by SEM and the debris particles from the worn surfaces were analyzed for oxidation by XPS. The normal load was found to have a more significant influence on the friction coefficient of the silicon nitride than an elevated temperature. The specific wear rate was found to decrease along with the sliding distance. The specific wear rate at 29.4 N and 1000$^{\circ}C$ was 292 times larger than that at room temperature. The main wear mechanism from room temperature to 750$^{\circ}C$ was caused by brittle fracture whereas from 750$^{\circ}C$ to 1000$^{\circ}C$ the wear mechanism was mainly influenced by the oxidation of silicon nitride due to the increased temperature. The oxidation of silicon nitride at a high temperature was a significant factor in the wear increase.

In order to investigate the fracture behaviors(penetration modes) and the resistance to penetration during ballistic impact of cold-rolled Al 5052 H34 alloy laminates, anodized Al 5052 H34 alloy laminates, and Al 5052 H34 alloy after cold-rolling, ballistic testing was conducted. In general, superior armor material is brittle materials which have a high hardness. Ballistic resistance of these materials was measured by protection ballistic limit(V50), a statical velocity with 50% probability for incomplete penetration. Fracture behaviors and ballistic tolerance, described by penetration modes, are observed respectfully, resulting from V50 test and Projectile Through Plate(PTP) test at velocities greater than V50. PTP tests were conducted with 0$^{\circ}$obliquity at room temperature using 5.56mm ball projectile. V50 tests with 0$^{\circ}$obliquity at room temperature were also conducted with projectiles that were able to achieve near or complete penetration during PTP tests. Surface Hardness, resistance to penetration, and penetration modes of Al 5052 H34 alloy laminates compared to those of cold-rolled Al 5052 H34 alloy laminates and anodized Al 5052 H34 alloy laminates anodized Al 5052 H34 alloy after cold-rolling.
Presented in this study are the variations of microstructures and mechanical properties with tempering and Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) conditions for SA508 Gr.4N steel used as Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) material. The blocks of model alloy were austenitized at the conventional temperature of $880^{\circ}C$ then tempered and post-weld heat treated at four different conditions. The hardness and yield strength decrease with increased tempering and PWHT temperatures, but impact toughness is significantly improved, especially in the specimens tempered at $630^{\circ}C$. The sample tempered at $630^{\circ}C$ with PWHT at $610^{\circ}C$ shows optimum mechanical properties in hardness, strength, and toughness, excluding only the transition property in the low temperature region. The microstructural observation and quantitative analysis of carbide size distribution show that the variations of mechanical properties are caused by the under-tempering and carbide coarsening which occurred during the heat treatment process. The introduction of PWHT results in the deterioration of the ductile-brittle transition property by an increase of coarse carbides controlling cleavage initiation, especially in the tempered state at $630^{\circ}C$.

The objective of this paper is to investigate and analyze the behaviour of prestressed I section structural members constructed with ultra high perfomance steel fiber reinforced cementitious concrete (SFR-UHPC). This material is known as reactive powder concrete (RPC) mixed with domestic materials and its compressive strength is over 150MP. The parameters of test specimens were span to depth ratio, prestressing force, prestressing wire placement and web width. Most influential parameter to determine the failure mode between shear and flexural action was proved to be shear span ratio. The characteristics of ultra high-strength concrete is basically brittle, but due to the steel fiber reinforcement behaviour of this structure member became ductile after the peak load. As a result of the test, the stress block of compressive zone should be redefined. The proposed analytical calculation of internal force capacity based by plastic analysis gave a good prediction for the shear and flexural strength of specimens. The numerical verification of the finite element model which constitutive law developed for Mode I fracture of fiber reinforced concrete correctly captured the overall behaviour of the specimens tested.

Operating test of power-transmission plastic spur gears were performed inspecting both characteristics of friction-wear and endurance, and suggesting endurance improvement method that either drills internal holes of tooth or inserts metallic pin in the internal hole of tooth and verifying this newly-provided method. In case of acetal gears, amount of friction-wear is observed to increase by development of plastic deformation and increase of tooth stiffness due to brittle material property of acetal. To the contrary, in case of nylon gears, suggested method is shown to drop down the tooth temperature for about 3∼10$^{\circ}C$ than original gear, thus amount of wear is reduced by over 30% and operating lift prolonged by more than 200%. Hence, suggested method is proved to be practically applicable to the plastic gears made by soft polymers such as Nylon.

This paper describes experimental results of modified small punch( MSP) test conducted to evaluate the fracure characteristics and mechanical properties of plasma sparayed zirconia ($ZrO_2$ stabilized with 8wt. % $Y_20_3$ : YSZ) NiCrAlY composite. The mixing ratios of YSZ/NiCrAlY were 0/100, 25/75, 50/50, 100/0 v.%. Test temperatures ranged from 293K to 1473K. This study is directed at development of thermal barrrier coating(TBC) system with superior heat resistance and mechanical properties. The microstructure and fracture process of the composite were examined by SEM and AE method. The mechanical properties of 100% YSZ were nearly independent of the temperatures tested in this study. In contrast, the NiCrAlY-containing composites showed a significant decrease of the mechanical properties above 1273K, showing a ductile- brittle transition behavior up to the temperature. Furthermore, it can seen that 25% YSZ/75% NiCrAlY composite gave the highest fracure strength and fracture energy among the mixing ratio tested over the temperature range.

When a structure is made by the process of forging, it has the different mechanical properties from those it has before the process. This study is based on the crack closure phenomenon of the crack growth behavior of forged AI7050-T7452. The specimens were prepared in three kinds of forging ratio in order to find out the effects of crack closure on the forged material and compare the crack growth behavior with not-forged aluminum. COD method and strain gage method were used in measuring the crack closure stress and the results from those methods were compared each other. FEM analysis was applied to verify the effective stress intensity factor range by the superposition of the crack closure load to the crack tip. In the result of this study, the crack closure stress decreased with increasing the forging ratio due to the finer grain size and the brittle manner.

Today optical communication industry is developed; demand of optical communication part is increased. ZrO$_2$ ceramic ferrule is very significant part which determines transmission efficiency and quality of information in the optical communication part by connector of optical fibers. Being different from metal grinding, material removal through brittle fracture plays an important role in ZrO$_2$ ceramic grinding. Most of ZrO$_2$ ceramic ferrule processes are grinding which request high processing precision. Particularly, concentricity and cylindricity of inner and outer diameter are very important. The co-axle grinding process of ZrO$_2$ ceramic ferrule is to make its concentricity all of uniform before centerless grinding. Surface integrity of ZrO$_2$ ceramic ferrule is affected by grinding conditions, and equipment. In this study, surface integrity of workpiece according to such as a change of grinding wheel speed, feed rate, regulating wheel speed and grinding force is investigate to improve the concentricity and roundness of ZrO$_2$ ceramic ferrule from many experiments. Thus, if possible be finding highly efficient and quality grinding conditions.
Due to the confinement effects, Steel-Straps Tensioning Technique (SSTT) can significantly enhance the strength and ductility of high-strength concrete (HSC) members (Moghaddam et al. 2008). However, the enhancement especially in strength may result in slender member and more susceptible to instability (Jiang and Teng 2012a). This instability is particularly significant in HSC member as it inherent the brittle nature of the material (Galano et al. 2008). The current slenderness limit expression used in the design is mainly derived from the experiment and analysis results based on Normal strength concrete (NSC) column and therefore the direct application of these slenderness limit expressions to the HSC column is being questioned. Besides, a particular slenderness limit for the SSTT-confined HSC column which incorporated the pre-tensioned force and multilayers effects is not yet available. Hence, an analytical study was carried out in the view of developing a simple equation in order to determine the slenderness limit for HSC column confined with SSTT. Based on the analytical results, it was concluded that the existing slenderness limit expressions used in the design are appropriate for neither HSC columns nor SSTT-confined HSC columns. In this paper, a slenderness limit expression which has incorporated the SSTT-confinement effects is proposed. The proposed expression can also be applied to unconfined HSC columns.
