The study area, Bonggil-ri, Gyeongju, SE Korea, is composed of Cretaceous sedimentary rocks, and Tertiary igneous rocks and dykes. A research on fracture developing history and density distribution was carried out on well exposed Tertiary granites. The fractures developed in this area have the following sequence; NW-SE trending duo-tile shear bands (set a), NNW-SSE trending extensional fractures (set d), WNW-ESE trending extensional or normal fractures (set b), NE-SW trending right-lateral fractures (set c), WNW-ESE trending reverse fault reactivated from normal faults (set e) and NW-SE trending left-lateral faults reactivated from shear bands (set a) under brittle condition. According to the result of fracture density analysis, the fracture density in this area depends on rock property rather than rock age, and also higher fracture density is observed around fault damage zones. However, this high fracture density may also be related to the cooling process associated with dyke intrusion as well as rock types and fault movement. Regardless of the reason of the high fracture density, high fracture density itself contributes to fluid flow and migration of chemical elements.
In this study, we have evaluated the water absorption phenomenon of photoresist dry film, which is commonly used to build circuits on PCB (Printed Circuit Board) by photolithography, by using ATR-FTIR (Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared). We have firstly observed significant change in fracture mode of dry film with respect to temperature and humidity, which we assumed the material transition from ductile to brittle. Secondly, we have established the process of absorption test for determining the diffusion coefficients of water into the dry film both with gravimeter and ATR-FTIR. We have successfully calculated the diffusion coefficients for each environmental conditions from the results which we achieved by gravimeter and ATR-FTIR. Compared to the gravimeter which is a conventional method for absorption test, the ATR-FTIR method in this study has been found to be very easy to use and have the same accuracy as gravimeter. Moreover, we are expecting to use the ATR-FTIR as an appropriate method to study the absorption phenomena related to any kinds of solvent and polymer system.
Starfish are a potential source of marine materials, but their unique odor can limit application. Our previous work suggested that brittle star Ophioplocus japonicus extract could be more effective as a cosmetic material by reducing its odor through a roasting process. However, the biological properties of heat-treated Ophioplocus japonicus extract (HOJE) remain poorly understood. We here examined the anti-inflammatory potential of HOJE in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW 264.7 cells. HOJE significantly inhibits LPS-stimulated nitric oxide (NO) production without affecting cell viability in a dose-dependent manner and suppresses LPS-induced expression of inducible nitric oxide synthases (iNOS) and pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-6 and -1β. Furthermore, treatment of pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate to inhibit nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling accelerated the inhibitory effect of HOJE on NO production, and the translocation of NF-κB p65 from the cytosol to the nucleus was attenuated by HOJE. These results show that HOJE ameliorates inflammation partly through NF-κB signaling which consequently suggests that it has anti-inflammatory potential.

Durability is one of the most important and attractive subjects in concrete research field because not only durability of concrete is reduced by various degradation factors but also its reduction adversely influences the structural performance and service life of concrete structure. For this reason, a considerable amount of papers associated with concrete durability have been published and those researches were mainly focused on the changes of intrinsic properties of concrete due to chemicophysical degradations. However, the relationship between durability of concrete and structural behavior of concrete member has not been well established yet. In this study, calcium leaching degradation, a cause of concrete strength reduction, was dealt with. The experiments of compressive and flexural behavior of degraded concrete member were performed to evaluate the characteristics of structural behavior according to degradation level. Finally, the results from the experiments were compared with those obtained from nonlinear FEM analysis. The results from this study clearly showed that leaching degradation leads to decrease in compressive strength and compressive behavior evolves from brittle to ductile failure pattern during the degradation process. Load capacity and flexible rigidity of the degraded RC member decreased when the degradation level increased, in compressive zone. Additionally, it was found that the values from nonlinear FEM analysis, CDP model in ABAQUS, coincided well with the experimental results.
High-speed melt spinning of syndiotactic polystyrene was carried out using high and low molecular weight polymers, HM s-PS and LM s-PS, at the throughput rates of 3 and 6 g/min. The effect of take-up velocity on the structure and properties of as-spun fibers was investigated. Wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) patterns of the as-spun fibers revealed that the orientation-induced crystallization started to occur at the take-up velocities of 2-3 km/min. The crystal modification was a-form. Birefringence of as-spun fibers showed negative value, and the absolute value of birefringence increased with an increase in the take-up velocity. The cold crystallization temperature analyzed through the differential scanning calorimetry (OSC) decreased with an increase in the take-up velocity in the low speed region, whereas as the melting temperature increased after the on-set of orientation-induced crystallization. It was found that the fiber structure development proceeded from lower take-up velocities when the spinning conditions of higher molecular weight and lower throughput rate were adopted. The highest tensile modulus of 6.5 GPa was obtained for the fibers prepared at the spinning conditions of LM s-PS, 6 g/min and 5 km/min, whereas the highest tensile strength of 160 MPa was obtained for the HM s-PS fibers at the take-up velocity of 2 km/min. Elongation at break of as-spun fibers showed an abrupt increase, which was regarded as the brittle-ductile transition, in the low speed region, and subsequently decreased with an increase in the take-up velocity. There was a universal relation between the thermal and mechanical properties of as-spun fibers and the birefringence of as-spun fibers when the fibers were still amorphous. The orientation-induced crystallization was found to start when the birefringence reached -0.02. After the starting of the orientation-induced crystallization, thermal and mechanical properties of as-spun fibers with similar level of birefringence varied significantly depending on the processing conditions.
Statement of problem: The endodontically treated tooth is generally restored with post and core, owing to the brittle and the loss of large amount of tooth structure. As periodontal treatment was developed, there are many cases that periodontally involved teeth used in prosthetic treatment. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the stress distribution in the dentin and post structures by the various post materials and the amount of remaining alveolar bone height. Material and method: The 3-dimensional finite element models of mandible 1st premolars were divided into six types according to the various amount of remaining alveolar bone and post type. All types were modeled using equal length, diameter and shape of the post. Three types of post and core materials were used: prefabricated titaniumpost and amalgam core, prefabricated stainless steel post and amalgam core, and cast gold post and core. 300 Newton force was applied to functional cusp of mandible 1st premolar. Results: The results were as follows: First, there was no apparent difference in the pattern of stress distribution according to the alveolar bone condition concentrate on the post middle area. Second, there was difference in pattern of stress distribution according to the core materials, gold post and core generated same than amalgam core. Third, there was no apparent difference in the pattern of stress distribution within the dentin according to the post and core materials. But a cast gold post and core generated the lowest maximum stress value, a stainless steel post generated the highest maximum stress value. Fourth, in the reduced alveolar bone model, maximum stress value is 1.5 times than that of the normal alveolar bone model. Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, to provide minimal stress to the root with alveolar bone reduced, the post length may be as long as apical seal was not destroyed. To prevent fracture of tooth, it is rational to use gold alloy which material was good for stress distribution for post materials.

Practical difficulty in the HDDR (hydrogenation - disproportionation - desorption - recombination) processing of Nd-Fe-B-type alloy is a poor reproducibility of coercivity of the HDDR-treated material. In an attempt to improve the reproducibility of coercivity of the HDDR-treated $Nd_{12.5}Fe_{80.6}B_{6.4}Ga_{0.3}Nb_{0.2}$ alloy, the hydrogen decrepitation was carefully controlled so as to induce more extensive micro-cracks in the particle. Prior to the hydrogenation and disproportionation reaction of HDDR processing, an additional hydrogen degassing was carried out at an elevated temperature of $600^{\circ}C$ under vacuum for the previously hydrogen decrepitated particle. During the additional hydrogen degassing the lattice of hydrogen absorbed $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ phase was further shrunken, hence more microcracks were introduced in the particle due to its brittle nature. Particles with more micro-cracks had more homogeneous hydrogen absorption and desorption reaction during the HDDR-treatment. The improved reproducibility of coercivity of the HDDR-treated material was attributed to the improved homogeneity of the HDDR reactions due to the presence of more micro-cracks.
The aim of this study was to investigate the physical properties of visible light curing Glass Ionomer cement for restorative esthetic filling. The control group was the autopolymerizing GC Fuji II Glass Ionomer cement (2.2: 1 P/L ratio) and the experimental groups were made by following procedure. To induce the polymerization by visible light, the powder of GC Fuji II GI cement and the liquid of Vitrabond for base & liner were mixed in an amalgam capsule with 2.5:1, 3.0:1, 3.5:1 P/L ratio (% wt/wt). After fabrication of specimens, compressive strength, fracture toughness ($K_{IC}$) Scanning Electron Microscope and X-ray Diffraction, water-leachable content, marginal leakage and surface roughness were studied. The results were as follows: 1. Only experimental No. 1 group (visible light curing) showed less compressive strength than control group 1 hour after curing. Strength was increased with aging in all groups, so the compressive strength of light curing groups was no less than that of autopolymerizing group after 3 weeks. 2. Experimental No.3 group (visible light curing) was inferior to No.2 group (visible light curing) in fracture resistance but light curing groups were more resistant to fracture than autopolymerizing group and showed ductile fracture pattern as compared with the brittle fracture pattern of autopolymerizing group. 3. From scanning electron microscopic image, various sized unreacted powder particles, surrounded by silica gel, were embedded in polysalt matrix. Light curing groups showed little crack and more dense unreacted particles than autopolymerizing group. 4. From X-ray diffraction analysis, GC Fuji II Glass Ionomer cement powder and all groups showed glassy appearance but light curing groups seemed to be more intensive in crystaline than autopolymerizing group. S. The most significant dissolution was shown in early setting period in all group. Light curing groups were dissolved less than autopolymerizing group. 6. Marginal leakage was not different significantly in case of cavity margin composed of same tooth structure (ex. only enamel margin, only dentin margin) but much more leakage was shown in dentin/cementum margin than enamel margin. In only case of only enamel margin, light curing groups were superior to autopolymerizing group. 7. All groups showed relatively smooth surface, which irregularity was less than $1{\mu}m$. Light curing groups were smoother than autopolymerizing group.

Peridynamics has been widely used in the dynamic fracture analysis of brittle materials. Recently, various crack patterns(compact region, floret, Hertz-type crack, etc.) of multilayered glass structures in experiments(Bless et al. 2010) were implemented with a bond-based peridynamic simulation(Bobaru et al.. 2012). The actual glass layers are bound with thin elastic interlayer material while the interlayer is missing from the peridynamic model used in the previous numerical study. In this study, the peridynamic interlayer modeling for the multilayered structures is proposed. It requires enormous computational time and memory to explicitly model very thin interlayer materials. Instead of explicit modeling, fictitious peridynamic particles are introduced for modeling interlayer materials. The computational efficiency and accuracy of the proposed peridynamic interlayer model are verified through numerical tests. Furthermore, preventing penetration scheme based on short-range interaction force is employed for the multilayered structure under compression and verified through parametric tests.
The spallation of a thermal barrier coating layer depends on the formation of brittle spinels. thermal expansion mismatch between ceramic and metal. the phase transformation of a ceramic layer and residual stress of coating layer. In this work. the formation mechanism of oxide scale formed by oxidation treatment at 90$0^{\circ}C$ was investigated in order to verify oxidation behavior at the interface between E-beam coated $Zr0_2$-7wt.% $Y_20_3$ and plasma sprayed CoNiCrAIY. Some elements distributed in the bond coating layer were selectively oxidized after oxidation. At the initial time of oxidation. AI-depletion zone and $\alpha$-$Al_O_3$,O, were formed at the bond coating layer by the AI-outward diffusion. After layer grew until critical thickness. spinels. $Cr_20$, and $C0_2CrO_4$ by outward diffusion of Co. Cr, Ni were formed. It was found that the formation of spinels may be related to the spallation of $Zr0_2$-7wt.% $Y_20_3$ during isothermal oxidation.
