  • An external electrode fluorescent lamp (EEFL) has an advantage of a long lifetime in the ear1y stages of the study on plasma discharge, interest in the lamp continues. Researches on the operation of external electrode fluorescent lamps have focused mainly on its use of a type of high frequency (MHz). By performing high brightness using a square wave operation method with the low frequency below 100kHz, which is applied to a narrowed tube type lamp that has several mm of lamp diameter, EEFL presented the possibility of using it as a light source for back-lights. However, because EEFL generates plasma using wall charges, which considers the impedance characteristics of glass based on the structural principle in discharge, it can be significant1y affected by frequency. Thus, this study verified the change in the characteristics of electromagnetic fields according to the change in frequency through a Maxwell's electromagnetic field simulation and examined the relationship between the change in the EEFL frequency and brightness by measuring the optical characteristics. In addition, the characteristics of the transformation of energy orbits were verified by investigating the characteristics of the wavelength according to the change in frequency through the OES.

  • This study was carried out to establish genetic transformation of Rot 3 gene into perilla plants and to evaluate aromatic compounds, brightness, anthocyanin contents and leaf index in Rot 3 overexpressing transgenic lines. Rot 3 transmitted successfully from T$_1$ to T$_2$ generation showing stable gene expression. It revealed that there was no difference between transgenic and non-transgenic plants in major agronomic characteristics of progeny analysis. There was not much difference in aromatic compounds and leaf brightness did not showed variations between transgenic and non-transgenic, but leaf index was distinguished, respectively.

  • Jets of compact radio sources are highly relativistic and Doppler boosted, making studies of their intrinsic properties difficult. Observed brightness temperatures can be used to study the intrinsic physical properties of the relativistic jets. The intrinsic properties of relativistic jets depend on inner jet models. We aimed to observationally test the inner jet models. The very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) cores of compact radio sources are optically thick at a given frequency. The distance of the core from the central engine is inversely proportional to the frequency. Under the equipartition condition between the magnetic field energy and particle energy densities, the absolute distance of the VLBI core can be predicted. We compiled the brightness temperatures of VLBI cores at various radio frequencies of 2, 8, 15, and 86~GHz. The brightness temperatures in the rest frame were investigated in the sub-parsec regions of the compact radio sources. From the vicinity of the central engine, the brightness temperatures increased slowly and then rose with steeper slope, indicating that the Lorentz factor increases along the jet. This implies that the jets are accelerated in the (sub-)parsec regions from the central engine.

  • Edge detection is used in many applications such as image analysis, pattern recognition and computer vision. Existing edge detection methods, there is such Sobel, Prewitt, Roberts, and LoG(Laplacian of Gaussian). In the conventional edge detection method, edge detection is insufficient because the change of the pixel brightness is small when the original image is in low illumination. Therefore, in this paper, we proposed a function to convert the pixel brightness of low illumination image to solve this problem. And it was compared by applying the conventional methods Sobel, Prewitt, Roberts, LoG(Laplacian of Gaussian) to determine the performance of the pixel brightness transform function.

  • This paper proposes a novel approach to shadow detection from a single natural image regardless of orientation and type of light sources. This approach is based on the assumption that shadow brightness changes linearly, and the axiom that a region cast shadow on is darker than that not having shadow under the same environment. Firstly, candidates for shadow are extracted by preprocessing. Then, they are quantized to replace the similar values with a representative value because of the more quantization steps of a pixel brightness, the higher linear independency among the neighboring pixels. Finally, shadows are detected according to linear independency of shadow brightness based on the assumption. The experimental results showed the proposed approach can robustly detect umbra as well as self-shadow and penumbra cast on a single-colored background.

  • TIn this paper, we propose a novel fuzzy stretching method that adopts a triangle type fuzzy membership function to control the highest and lowest brightness limit dynamically. As an essential procedure to enhance the brightness contrast, stretching is an important procedure in color image processing. While popular Ends-in Search stretching method should be provided fixed minimum and maximum brightness threshold from experience, our proposed method determines them dynamically by fuzzy membership functions. The minimum and maximum limit is determined by computing the lowest and highest pixel value according to the membership degree of our designed triangle type membership function. The experiment shows that the proposed method result in far less skewed histogram than those of Ends-in Search stretching thus successfully verifies its effectiveness.

  • Auto exposure (AE) in image signal processor (ISP) controls brightness of input image to the proper brightness when it is too dark or bright. But conventional AEs often fail to get proper brightness since AE controls only average brightness of image. Especially in applications that require object recognition, it cannot be solved the problem by AE of ISP. In this paper proposes Histogram Equalization (HE) processes that is the alternative of AE. It also proposes proper method to realize hardware and compensate HE problems conventional by using simple calculation.

  • According to large-sized LCD, the CCFL used in backlight is getting longer and a backlight using one lamp makes a needed brightness by arranging lamp in parallel because of the limit of brightness. In this paper, the inverter to nu the large back-light in 42inch LCD TV using 20 CCFLs was designed to produce the same output on each lamp in any input condition. Supplementing the conventional high-low method driving CCFL, by adopting high-high one, the brightness variation among each lamp sides is improved. Additionally, to improve the brightness variation, the method connecting the lamp and the capacitor in series is used. The proposed system was verified by the experiment.
