Quantum dots(QDs) with their tunable luminescence properties are uniquely suited for use as lumophores in light emitting device. We investigate the microstructural effect on the electroluminescence(EL). Here we report the use of inorganic semiconductors as robust charge transport layers, and demonstrate devices with light emission. We chose mechanically smooth and compositionally amorphous films to prevent electrical shorts. We grew semiconducting oxide films with low free-carrier concentrations to minimize quenching of the QD EL. The hole transport layer(HTL) and electron transport layer(ETL) were chosen to have carrier concentrations and energy-band offsets similar to the QDs so that electron and hole injection into the QD layer was balanced. For the ETL and the HTL, we selected a 40-nm-thick $ZnSnO_x$ with a resistivity of $10{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$, which show bright and uniform emission at a 10 V applied bias. Light emitting uniformity was improved by reducing the rpm of QD spin coating. At a QD concentration of 15.0 mg/mL, we observed bright and uniform electroluminescence at a 12 V applied bias. The significant decrease in QD luminescence can be attributed to the non-uniform QD layers. This suggests that we should control the interface between QD layers and charge transport layers to improve the electroluminescence.
We describe the Infrared Medium-deep Survey (IMS), a survey of quasars in the early universe beyond z=5. IMS uses multi-wavelength archival data such as SDSS, CFHT-LS, UKIDSS, and SWIRE, which provide deep images over wide area enough for searching of high redshift bright quasars. In addition, we are carrying out J-band imaging survey with the depth of 23AB at UKIRT for up to 200 $deg^2$, of which 50 $deg^2$ is covered so far. For the quasar candidates at z~5.5, we are making observations with custom-made filters, which are more efficient to make robust quasar candidate samples in this redshift range. Because of the deeper survey depth and the unique methods, our IMS can provide a large number of high redshift quasars comparing with ongoing high redshift bright quasar survey. The high redshift quasars we confirm will give us with clues of the growth of super massive black holes and the metal enrichment history in the early universe.
This study aims to increase the transparency of the natural adhesives made with lacquer and glue. For the purpose, samples were prepared by mixing urushiol with glue in varied proportion and the characteristics and adhesive properties were investigated. By adding glue on urushiol, IR spectra of the natural adhesives became similar to that of glue as the N-H band related with protein of glue increased, while that of methylene C-H bond related to urushiol decreased. Samples were dried within a day and maintained a bright color without blackening by oxidation during the curing process. The natural adhesives with urushiol and glue showed various range of viscosity and tensile shear strength as Cemedine C or Epoxy resin according to mixing ratio. In addition, the sample of mixing ratio of 6:4 showed bright and transparency in appearance and tensile shear strength similar to that of Araldite AY103-1/HY956 for earthenware layer.
A spherical $Sr_4Al_{14}O_{25}:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor for use in white-light-emitting diodes was synthesized using a liquid-state reaction with two precipitation stages. For the formation of phosphor from a precursor, the calcination temperature was $1,100^{\circ}C$. The particle morphology of the phosphor was changed by controlling the processing conditions. The synthesized phosphor particles were spherical with a narrow size-distribution and had mono-dispersity. Upon excitation at 395 nm, the phosphor exhibited an emission band centered at 497 nm, corresponding to the $4f^65d{\rightarrow}4f^7$ electronic transitions of $Eu^{2+}$. The critical quenching-concentration of $Eu^{2+}$ in the synthesized $Sr_4Al_{14}O_{25}:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor was 5 mol%. A phosphor-converted LED was fabricated by the combination of the optimized spherical phosphor and a near-UV 390 nm LED chip. When this pc-LED was operated under various forward-bias currents at room temperature, the pc-LED exhibited a bright blue-green emission band, and high color-stability against changes in input power. Accordingly, the prepared spherical phosphor appears to be an excellent candidate for white LED applications.
Various processes, such as space weathering and granular convection, are occurring on asteroids' surfaces. Estimation of the surface exposure timescale is essential for understanding these processes. The Hayabusa mission target asteroid, (25143) Itokawa (Sq-type) is the only asteroid whose age is estimated from remote sensing observations as well as sample analyses in laboratories. There is, however, an unignorable discrepancy between the timescale derived from these different techniques. The ages estimated based on the solar flare track density and the weathered rim thickness of regolith samples range between 102 and 104 years [1][2]. On the contrary, the ages estimated from the crater size distributions and the spectra cover from 106 to 107 years [3][4]. It is important to notice that there is a common drawback of both age estimation methods. Since the evidence of regolith migration is found on the surface of Itokawa [5], the surficial particles would be rejuvenated by granular convection. At the same time, it is expected that the erasure of craters by regolith migration would affect the crater size distribution. We propose a new technique to estimate surface exposure age, focusing on the bright mottles on the large boulders. Our technique is less prone to the granular convection. These mottles are expected to be formed by impacts of mm to cm-sized interplanetary particles. Together with the well-known flux model of interplanetary dust particles (e.g., Grün, 1985 [6]), we have investigated the timescale to form such mottles before they become dark materials again by the space weathering. In this work, we used three AMICA (Asteroid Multi-band Imaging Camera) v-band images. These images were taken on 2005 November 12 during the close approach to the asteroid. As a result, we found the surface exposure timescales of these boulders are an order of 106 years. In this meeting, we will introduce our data analysis technique and evaluate the consistency among previous research for a better understanding of the evolution of this near-Earth asteroid.
The first all-sky mid-/far-infrared survey by IRAS in the 1980s, has been followed by only two more, by AKARI, from 2006, and WISE in 2010. I discuss some features of the WISE survey, and highlight some key results from early extragalactic observations that have been made by the science team during the operation of the telescope, and the post-operation proprietary period during which the public release data products were being generated. The efficient survey strategy and very high-data rate from WISE produced a catalogue of 530 million objects that was released to the public in March 2012. The WISE survey strategy naturally provided the deepest coverage at the ecliptic poles, where matched comparison fields were obtained using Spitzer, and where AKARI also observed deep fields. I describe some of the follow-up work that has been carried out based on the WISE survey, and the prospects for enhancing the WISE data by combining the AKARI survey results are also discussed. While the all-sky AKARI survey is less deep than the WISE catalogue, and is still being worked on by the AKARI science team, it includes a larger number of bands, extends to longer wavelengths, and in particular has very complementary band passes to WISE in the mid-infrared waveband, which will provide enhanced spectral information for relatively bright targets.

By probing nuclear regions and overall properties of AGN hosts as a function of their environments, we aim to observationally examine how AGN activities are related to their surroundings. We have selected eight representative AGN hosts in the Virgo cluster, including seven cluster members (M49, M60, M84, M87, NGC 4435, NGC 4526, NGC 4636) and one galaxy that is likely to be background (NGC 4261) but still close enough to be studied in high resolution. The selected galaxies are located in a range of density regions showing various morphology in 1.4 GHz continuum. High resolution observations with the KVN allow us to access the inner region of the AGN without suffering from dust extinction and synchrotron self-absorption. Since half of our targets are weak to be detected at K-band within its coherence time, we applied phase referencing (fast antenna position switching) to calibrate fast atmospheric phase fluctuations. We successfully detected relatively bright AGNs, such as M87, M84 and NGC4261, but no detection signature was found to the other members of the sample. In this talk, we will present our first results from our KVN observations, while we will discuss in detail the applied technique and our immediate future plans.
Satellite imagery may contain large regions covered with atmospheric aerosol. A high-resolution satellite imagery affected by non-homogenous aerosol cover should be processed for land cover study and perform the radiometric calibration that will allow its future application for Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT) data. In this study, aerosol signal was separated from high resolution satellite data based on the reflectance separation method. Since aerosol removal has a good sensitivity over bright surface such as man-made targets, aerosol optical thickness (AOT) retrieval algorithm could be used. AOT retrieval using Look-up table (LUT) approach for utilizing the transformed image to radiometrically compensate visible band imagery is processed and tested in the correction of satellite scenery. Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), EO-1/HYPERION data have been used for aerosol correction and AOT retrieval with different spatial resolution. Results show that an application of the aerosol detection for HYPERION data yields successive aerosol separation from imagery and AOT maps are consistent with MODIS AOT map.

We observed a bright type Ia Supernovae SN 2014J located in the nearby starburst galaxy M82 using BOES (Bohyunsan Optical Echelle Spectrograph) for eight nights from day -11 (Jan. 22) to day +102 (May. 15) with respect to maximum brightness in B-band. We found the lines formed in the ejecta such as Si ($6300{\AA}$), whose velocity is more than 10,000km/s respect to the host galaxy as well as those formed in the circumstellar material (e.g. Na I D [$5890{\AA}$, $5896{\AA}$], 100km/s) Also, we found other weak iron ($5780{\AA}$, $5797{\AA}$, $6376{\AA}$, $6613{\AA}$, and $7543{\AA}$), carbon ($8059{\AA}$) and other unknown elements. These lines are also thought to have been formed in circumstellar material. We expect that this study will contribute to revelation of the nature of the progenitor stars.
A new luminescent polymer, poly{1,4-phenylene-1,2-ethenediyl-2'-[2"-(4'"-octyloxyphenyl)-(5"-yl)-1",3",4"-oxadiazole]-1,4-phenylene-1,2-ethenediyl-2,5-bis-dodecyloxy-1,4-phenylene-1,2-ethenediyl} (Oxd-PPV), was synthesized by the Heck coupling reaction. Electron withdrawing pendant, conjugated 1,3,4-oxadiazole (Oxd), is on the vinylene unit. The band gap of the polymer figured out from the UV-visible spectrum was 2.23 eV and the polymer film shows bright yellow emission maximum at 552 nm. The electroluminescence (EL) maximum of double layer structured device (ITO/PEDOT:PSS/Oxd-PPV/Al) appeared at 553 nm. Relative PL quantum yield of Oxd-PPV film is 3.6 times higher than that of MEH-PPV film. The HOMO and LUMO energy levels of Oxd-PPV figured out from the cyclic voltammogram and the UV-visible spectrum are -5.32 and -3.09 eV, respectively, so that more balanced hole and electron injection efficiency can be expected compared to MEH-PPV. A double layer EL of Oxd-PPV has an maximum efficiency of 0.15 cd/A and maximum brightness of 464 cd/$m^2$.
