The effect of structure size on the nominal strength of unidirectional fiber-polymer composites, failing by propagation of a kink band with fiber microbuckling, is analyzed experimentally and theoretically. Tests of novel geometrically similar carbon-PEEK specimens, with notches slanted so as to lead to a pure kink band (without shear or splitting cracks), are conducted. The specimens are rectangular strips of widths 15.875, 31.75. and 63.5 mm (0.625, 1.25 and 2.5 in and gage lengths 39.7, 79.375 and 158.75 mm (1.563, 3.125 and 6.25 in.). They reveal the existence of a strong (deterministic. non-statistical) size effect. The doubly logarithmic plot of the nominal strength (load divided by size and thickness) versus the characteristic size agrees with the approximate size effect law proposed for quasibrittle failures in 1983 by Bazant This law represents a gradual transition from a horizontal asymptote, representing the case of no size effect (characteristic of plasticity or strength criteria), to an asymptote of slope -1/2 (characteristic of linear elastic fracture mechanics. LEFM) . The size effect law for notched specimens permits easy identification of the fracture energy of the kink bandand the length of the fracture process zone at the front of the band solely from the measurements of maximum loads. Optimum fits of the test results by the size effect law are obtained, and the size effect law parameters are then used to identify the material fracture characteristics, Particularly the fracture energy and the effective length of the fracture process zone. The results suggest that composite size effect must be considered in strengthening existing concrete structural members such as bridge columns and beams using a composite retrofitting technique.
A composite box-girder with corrugated steel webs has been used in civil engineering practice as an alternative to the conventional pre-stressed concrete box-girder because of several advantages, such as high shear resistance without vertical stiffeners and an increase in the efficiency of pre-stressing due to the accordion effect. Many studies have been conducted on the shear buckling and flexural behavior of the composite box-girder with corrugated steel webs. However, the torsional behavior is not fully understood yet, and it needed to be investigated. Prior study of the torsion of the composite box-girder with corrugated steel webs has been developed by assuming that the concrete section is cracked prior to loading and doesn't have tensile resistance. This results in poor estimation of pre-cracking behaviors, such as initial stiffness. To overcome this disadvantage of the previous analytical model, an improved analytical model for torsion of the composite box-girder with corrugated steel webs was developed considering the concrete tension behavior in this study. Based on the proposed analytical model, a non-linear torsional analysis program for torsion of the composite box-girder with corrugated steel webs was developed and successfully verified by comparing with the results of the test. The proposed analytical model shows that the concrete tension behavior has significant effect on the initial torsional stiffness and cracking torsional moment. Finally, a simplified torsional moment-twist angle relationship of the composite box-girder with corrugated steel webs was proposed based on the proposed analytical model.

This paper describes a marine watch system on a ship, which is aided by an image processing method. The system detects other ships through a navigational image sequence to prevent oversights, and it measures their bearings to maintain their movements. The proposed method is described, the detection techniques and measurement of bearings techniques are derived, and the results have been reported. The image is divided into small regions on the basis of the brightness value and then labeled. Each region is considered as a template. A template is assumed to be a ship. Then, the template is compared with frames in the original image after a selected time. A moving vector of the regions is calculated using an Excel table. Ships are detected using the characteristics of the moving vector. The video camera captures 30 frames per second. We segmented one frame into approximately 5000 regions; from these, approximately 100 regions are presumed to be ships and considered to be templates. Each template was compared with frames captured at 0.33 s or 0.66 s. In order to improve the accuracy, this interval was changed on the basis of the magnification of the video camera. Ships’ bearings also need to be determined. The proposed method can measure the ships’ bearings on the basis of three parameters: (1) the course of the own ship, (2) arrangement between the camera and hull, and (3) coordinates of the ships detected from the image. The course of the own ship can be obtained by using a gyrocompass. The camera axis is calibrated along a particular direction using a stable position on a bridge. The field of view of the video camera is measured from the size of a known structure on the hull in the image. Thus, ships’ bearings can be calculated using these parameters.
As the ship is getting bigger and faster lately, ship's structure or cargoes might be often damaged and the ship might be cut in two in extreme conditions by a wave impact on its bow. In this paper, the vertical acceleration, which is one of factors for evaluating seakeeping performance, was measured under the various sea states by the hull stress monitoring system(HMS) on the bridge, and the result was compared with those of model test and theoretical studies. Then, we confirmed the seakeeping performance of T.S. HANBADA by comparing it with ITTC seakeeping criteria This result will be a great help for the safe navigation by making it possible to estimate the possibility of work and the amount of risk under the various sea conditions with which may be confronted, and the shipbuilding yard can be possible to construct the vessel with superior performance through these data measured on the actual ship.

In this paper, inverter type neon power supply using a piezoelectric transformer is fabricated and its characteristic is investigated. Developed neon power supply is composed of basic circuit and blocks, such as rectifier part, frequency oscillation part and piezoelectric transformer and resonant half bridge inverters. In this paper for complement the low power limitation, piezoelectric transformer at parallel connected driving by inverter is studied for noon tubes system of high power. When piezoelectric transformer is connected with parallel, LC filter connection method with parallel and selection of inductance L and capacitor C of primary side is suggested for reduce unbalanced current at the terminal of each transformer. Piezoelectric transformers use piezoelectric ceramic devices. Thus it is wireless therefore it has high power density, high Isolation level, low loss, more light, and miniaturization. In addition, high voltage transfer ratio is expected because there is no leakage inductance. Also, it has economic merit that the electrical loss Is low because structure is simple, small and tighter weight.
In the object-oriented software development, redesigning of classes and reorganizing of class hierarchy structures should be necessary to reduce many of the headaches of object-oriented software design and maintenance. To support this task, in this paper, we propose a theoretical foundation for class hierarchy reorganizations that is relatively complete, correct, formal and easy to understand and use. We introduce the flattened class hierarchy that characterizes the class hierarchy structures in object-oriented software evolution. And we also present an algorithm which transforms a given class hierarchy into the normalized form. The flattened class hierarchy helps us map the inheritance and aggregation paths in a class hierarchy to paths in an object hierarchy that is an instance of the class hierarchy. By applying the algorithm into a given class hierarchy, we can make a new, object-preserved, and flattened class hierarchy that is the cornerstone for reorganization of class hierarchy structure and plays an important role as a bridge on the incremental evolutionary changes and reuse of object-oriented software to reorganize class hierarchies.

This study performed earthquake response analyses of underground structures using displacement responses of soil. In this study, spring coefficients of surrounding soil proposed by specifications and researchers were adopted and then their corresponding analysis results were compared. The free field analyses using ProShake were carried out in order to predict ground responses of the field without underground structures. Several earthquakes such as El Centro, Ofunato, and Hachinohe earthquakes were considered to calculate maximum displacements. Numerical examples were analyzed, and then the results were compared and commented depending on spring coefficients of soil for the analyses using displacement responses of soil. The soil coefficients ranged from 0.05 to 14.39 times of those calculated by Korean Bridge Design Specification (2005). In conclusion, the coefficients of soil proposed by standard specifications seemed to be overestimated compared with those by the finite element method(FEM).

There are cofferdam and watertight wall to prevent of circulation or pollution during building of ocean structures like a dam and bridge in the harbors area and the sea. Inflow fluid and base of structure is important thing as one of the structural design factors for this interception wall like a cofferdam and watertight wall. In this study, it is revealed that at least 500 instantaneous velocity field data are required for ensemble average to get reliable turbulence statistics. The turbulent shear flow around a surface-mounted vertical wall was investigated by using the two-frame PIV(CACTUS 3.1) system and Mean velocity distributions have also been measured in the whole flow field.

Vasopressin (VP)-related peptide was purified from the brain extract of conger eel (Conger myriaster) by reverse-phase, ion-exchange high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). This peptide with a molecular weight of 1,051.2 Da was determined as $H-Cys-Tyr-Ile-Gln-Asn-Cys-Pro-Arg-Gly-NH_2$, whose Cys residues made an intramolecular disulfide bridge by the automated amino acid sequence analysis, MALDI- TOF mass spectrometry. It's sequence was confirmed by identity of the elution position with the synthetic peptide in HPLC system. As a result of homology investigation, the primary structure of this peptide was the same as that of VP-superfamily member, $[Arg^8]-vasotocin$. The synthetic peptide showed a contractile activity at a minimal effective concentration of $10^{-10}\;M$ on the intestinal smooth muscle of goldfish.

This paper proposes the development of a low frequency electronic hammer drive system that is used to prevent scaling or clogging in the hopper process. The electro-mechanical hammering driving method involves the generation of vibration and impact energy. The operation principles of the electromagnetic hammer were considered by parallel/series spring coefficient analysis and the amount of kinetic energy generated was calculated from the product of the equivalent spring constant, which is coupled with the E core and the gap of between the E core and I core. In addition, the Pulsation Driving algorithm was applied to the proposed electromagnetic hammer to obtain the maximizing kinetic energy. This algorithm was then implemented by a logical AND operation process and micro-controller (atmega128) built in functions with a timer interrupt and PWM generation function. The driving circuit of the electromagnetic hammer was designed using the H-bridge type IGBT circuit. The experimental test was performed by usefulness of the developed electromagnetic hammer systems with the acceleration measurement method. The experimental result showed that the proposed system has good kinetic energy generation performance and can be applied to the hopper process.
