In order to identify damage of highway bridges rapidly, a method for damage identification using dynamic response of bridge induced by moving vehicle and static test data is proposed. To locate damage of the structure, displacement energy damage index defined from the energy of the displacement response time history is adopted as the indicator. The displacement response time histories of bridge structure are obtained from simulation of vehicle-bridge coupled vibration analysis. The vehicle model is considered as a four-degree-of-freedom system, and the vibration equations of the vehicle model are deduced based on the D'Alembert principle. Finite element method is used to discretize bridge and finite element model is set up. According to the condition of displacement and force compatibility between vehicle and bridge, the vibration equations of the vehicle and bridge models are coupled. A Newmark-${\beta}$ algorithm based professional procedure VBAP is developed in MATLAB, and used to analyze the vehicle-bridge system coupled vibration. After damage is located by employing the displacement energy damage index, the damage extent is estimated through the least-square-method based model updating using static test data. At last, taking one simply supported bridge as an illustrative example, some damage scenarios are identified using the proposed damage identification methodology. The results indicate that the proposed method is efficient for damage localization and damage extent estimation.
Extraordinary displacement and vibration by heavy vehicle causes passengers to feel mental uncomfortableness and bridge to be damaged. To increase serviceability, the research on the human influence for vibration to happen at the bridge has been performed for a long time in oversea but it does not draw concern relatively in the domestic. The purpose of this research is to develop an evaluation method for vibration serviceability of continuous slab bridge. This research is focused on establishing theoretical method to assess vibration serviceability of bridge considering natural frequency, displacement, and acceleration since the criteria for the human responses to vibration is generally based on frequency band. By examining the characteristics of vibration serviceability which has been assessed with human response curve through field experiments as well as analytical study, the evaluation method of vibration serviceability for continuous slab bridges is proposed. Based on applications to the example of continuous slab bridge, the simple evaluation of vibration serviceability in the paper may be used in the initial step of design practice.

Wind and earthquake loads may cause strong vibrations in large-span cable-stayed bridges, leading to the inability of the bridge to operate normally. An improved Pounding Tuned Mass Damper (PTMD) system was designed to improve the safety of the large-span cable-stayed bridge. The vibration control effect of the improved PTMD system on the large-span cablestayed bridge under the combined action of earthquake-wind-traffic was studied. Furthermore, the impact of different parameters on the vibration suppression performance of the improved PTMD system was analyzed. The numerical results indicate that the PTMD system is very effective in suppressing the displacements of the bridge caused by both the traffic-wind coupling and traffic-earthquake coupling. Moreover, the number, mass ratio, pounding stiffness, and gap values have a significant influence on the vibration suppression performance of the improved PTMD system. When the number of PTMD is increased from 3 to 9, the vibration reduction ratio of the vertical displacement is increased from 25.39% to 48.05%. As the mass ratio changes from 0.5% to 2%, the vibration reduction ratio increases significantly from 22.23% to 53.30%.
The seismic response analysis of an existing bridge needs a mathematical model that can be calibrated with measured dynamic characteristics. These characteristics are the periods and the associated mode shapes of vibration and the modal damping coefficients. This paper deals with the measurements and the interpretation of the results of ambient vibration tests done on a newly erected cable stayed bridge across the Oued Dib River at Mila city in Algeria. The signal analysis of ambient vibration records will permit to determine the dynamic characteristics of the bridge. On the other hand, a 3-D model of the bridge is developed in order to assess the frequencies and the associated modes of vibration. This information will be necessary in the planning of the test on the site (locations of the sensors, frequencies to be measured and the associated mode shapes of vibration). The frequencies predicted by the finite element model are compared with those measured during full-scale ambient vibration measurements of the bridge. In the same way, the modal damping coefficients obtained by the random decrement method are compared to those of similar bridges.
This paper presents a nondestructive evaluation approach for system identification (SID) of real railway bridges using field vibration test results. First, a multi-phase SID scheme designed on the basis of eigenvalue sensitivity concept is presented. Next, the proposed multi-phase approach is evaluated from field vibration tests on a real railway bridge (Wondongcheon bridge) located in Yangsan, Korea. On the steel girder bridge, a few natural frequencies and mode shapes are experimentally measured under the ambient vibration condition. The corresponding modal parameters are numerically calculated from a three-dimensional finite element (FE) model established for the target bridge. Eigenvalue sensitivities are analyzed for potential model-updating parameters of the FE model. Then, structural subsystems are identified phase-by-phase using the proposed model-updating procedure. Based on model-updating results, a baseline model and a nondestructive evaluation of test bridge are identified.

The vibration control of bridge is studied considering the vibration characteristics of the Korean-type high-speed railway bridge. Fast nonlinear analysis is adopted as time integration method and the bridge and the train are modeled by FEM and sequentially moving constant forces respectively. Additional damping mechanism is indispensable to the Korean-type high-speed railway bridge because resonance vibration is excited under the maximum design speed. The optimal position and capacity of the damper is studied through the parametric studies, Transient vibration of the bridge is effectively controlled by such additional dampers which means that dampers play a role as structural damping. And also the maximum response of the bridge is reduced. Therefore it is verified that the increase of expected service life and the improvement of serviceability can be obtained through dampers.
This paper presents passive vibration control method to suppress train-induced vibration on a long-span steel arch bridge. According to the train load frequency analysis, undesirable resonance of a bridge will occur when the impact frequency of the train axles are close to the modal frequencies of the bridge. Because the first mode shape of the long-span steel arch bridge may take anti-symmetric shape along the bridge direction, however, the optimal control configuration for resonance suppression should be considered carefully In this study, bridge-vehicle element is used to estimate the bridge-train interaction precisely. From the numerical simulation of a loom steel arch bridge under TGV-K train loading, dynamic magnification influences are evaluated according to vehicle moving speed and efficient control system with passive dampers are presented in order to diminish the vertical displacement and vertical acceleration.
In this study, the subspace stochastic realization theories (SSR model I and SSR model II) have been applied to a real bridge for estimating its dynamic characteristics (natural frequencies, damping constants, and vibration modes) under ambient vibration. A numerical simulation is carried out for an arch-type steel truss bridge using a white noise excitation. The estimates obtained from this simulation are compared with those obtained from the Finite Element (FE) analysis, demonstrating good agreement and clarifying the excellent performance of this method in estimating the structural dynamic characteristics. Subsequently, these methods are applied to the vibration induced by both strong and weak winds as obtained by remote monitoring of the Kabashima bridge (an arch-type steel truss bridge of length 136 m, and situated in Nagasaki city). The results obtained with this experimental data reveal that more accurate estimates are obtained when strong wind vibration data is used. In contrast, the vibration data obtained from weak wind provides accurate estimates at lower frequencies, and inaccurate accuracy for higher modes of vibration that do not get excited by the wind of lower intensity. On the basis of the identified results obtained using both simulated data and monitored data from a real bridge, it is determined that the SSR model II realizes more accurate results than the SSR model I. In general, the approach investigated in this study is found to provide acceptable estimates of the dynamic characteristics of highway bridges as well as for the vibration monitoring of bridges.
