Increasing the volume of traffic on the roads causes social and economical problems such as increasing air-pollution and distribution cost. Prefabricated light weight bridge becomes a possible solution for these problems in the urban area where it is difficult to construct new one or expend the existing road. There are some merits in this kind of bridge. First, the design live and dead loads are minimized by allowing only passenger cars. Second employing prefabrication construction scheme reduces the construction time. Third, there is no need to buy land if the elevation road is placed on the top of existing one. In seismic design of bridges, base isolation has been an effective solution when the bridge has stiff piers and a heavy superstructure. The prefabricated light weight bridge has different dynamic characteristics from the ordinary bridges. In this paper, the applicability of base isolators such as lead rubber bearing and elastomeric bearing, to prefabricated light weight bridge is examined.

A methodology is developed to evaluate the vulnerability of bridge piers to scour and to help establish effective disaster measures, taking into account the locality and scour characteristics in Korea. Based on the bearing capacity of bridge foundation-ground integrating system changed by scour, this methodology is able to prioritize bridge foundations reflecting on the geotechnical factors as well as hydraulic ones. The bridge foundation vulnerability to scour is categorized into 7 groups considering the concise information of the bridge foundation-ground integrating system. A case study of implementing this method which includes the analysis of the scour depth and evaluation, and categorizing the scour vulnerability of bridge foundation is presented.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Bridge exercise with abdominal drawing-in on static and dynamic balance in patients with stroke. Methods: Forty patients with stroke participated in this study. Participation was randomly assigned to the Bridge exercise group (n=20) and the Bridge exercise with abdominal drawing-in group (n=20). A bio-feedback device was used when patients performed the Bridge exercise with abdominal drawing-in. This training was performed without any motion on the patient's spine and upper belly part, and the pressure was held with the biofeedback device as 40-70 mmHg. Both groups received training 30 minutes per day, three times per week, for four weeks. Weight bearing, anterior limit of stability, and posterior limit of stability for static balance ability were measured, and Berg balance scale (BBS), Timed up and go test (TUG) for dynamic balance ability were also measured. Results: Participants showed significant differences between pre- and post-mediation in terms of weight bearing, anterior limit of stability, posterior limit of stability, Berg balance scale, and Timed up and go test (p<0.05). The Bridge exercise with abdominal drawing-in group showed a more significant increase (p<0.05). Conclusion: According to the results of this study, both exercises were effective for improving the static and dynamic balance ability. However we suggest that the Bridge exercise with abdominal drawing-in is more efficient for increasing balance ability in patients with stroke.

A lot of long-span marine bridge, which connects land to island or island to island, are being designed and constructed lately in south-west coast in South Korea. In the past, caisson foundations in marine were mainly adopted in construction and stability aspect, however, nowadays with development of pile construction technology, drilled shaft foundations are mainly adopted. As the long span cable stayed bridge and suspension bridge applied with lots of loads are being designed, the scale of pile foundations are getting larger. As the construction cost of substructure including foundation in marine bridges is too high, the appropriate evaluation of the axial bearing capacity of pile becomes a core factor to decide the construction cost of foundation if the drilled shaft is adopted as foundation type of bridge. The evaluation values of skin friction and end bearing capacity of drilled shaft in weathered rock suggested in south Korea are only to introduce the foreign specifications, and most of them are designed in a kind of hard soil layer. Also the allowable load of pile section is less than the expected bearing capacity of pile in the soil condition since the allowable capacity of pile is undervalued. Recently in order to improve this factor the bi-axial hydraulic load test of pile was taken, the data of load transfer analysis of pile, unit of skin friction and end bearing capacity are accumulated. In our country, the design of piles are made with ASD, however, LRFD considering service, strength and extreme state was adopted in Incheon Grand Bridge implemented with BTL, and the research to systematize the resistance coefficient appropriate at home country are being progressed.
Recently drastic improvement of railway technology has been accompanied by the construction of very high-speed tracks. It should be noticed that Continuously Welded Rail(CWR) has played significant role in technical development of railway and that installation of CWR is now being scheduled on existing lines as well as newly-built lines. In general, interaction between CWR and bridge deck takes place on bridge section and additional axial force and displacement is to be developed owing to temperature and braking/acceleration forces. This interaction is known to be mainly governed by span organizations and arrangements of foot bearings. In common practice, movable bearing is stationed and designed on the assumption that it is not able to transfer the horizontal force of upper decks. However, it is well known that horizontal resistance is developed in movable bearings due to friction and that friction coefficient of movable bearing is ranged from 0.03 to 0.20 depending on the material of bearings and magnitude of reactions. Therefore, it is easily reasoned out that friction of movable bearing can influence the mutual behavior of CWR and bridge decks. Suggested in this study is to investigate the validity and efficiency of friction effect of movable bearings in controlling the axial force and displacement of CWR on continuous railway bridges.
Steel laminated elastomeric bearings are commonly used in bridge structures to control displacements and rotations and transfer forces from the superstructure to the substructure. Proper knowledge of design, fabrication and erection procedures is important to ensure stability and adequate structural performance during the lifetime of the bridge. Difference in elevations sometimes leads to large size gaps between the bearing and the girder which makes the grout thickness that is commonly used for leveling deviate beyond standards. This paper investigates the structural response of High Strength Fiber Reinforced Cementitious (HSFRC) thin plinths that are used to close gaps between bearing pads and precast girders. An experimental program was developed for this purpose where HSFRC plinths of different size were cast and tested under vertical loads that simulate bridge loading in service. The structural performance of the plinths was closely monitored during testing, mainly crack propagation, vertical reaction and displacement. Analytically, the HSFRC plinth was analyzed using the beam on elastic foundation theory as the supporting elastomeric bearing pads are highly compressible. Closed form solutions were derived for induced displacement and forces and comparisons were made between analytical and experimental results. Finally, recommendations were made to facilitate the practical use of HSFRC plinths in bridge construction based on its enhanced load carrying capacity in shear and flexure.

Dynamic responses of multi-span simply supported bridges are investigated to examine the effect of damaged bearings under seismic excitations. The damaged bearings are modeled as sliding elements with friction between the super-structure and the pier top. Various values of the friction coefficients for damaged bearings are examined with increasing magnitudes of peak ground accelerations. It is found that the g1oba1 seismic behaviors are significantly influenced by the occurrence of bearing damage. It should be noticed that the most possible location of unseating failure of superstructures differs with that in the model without consideration of the bearing damage. It can be concluded that the bearing damage may play the major role in the unseating failure of a bridge system, so that the damage of bearings should be included to achieve more rational seismic safety evaluation.
In this paper is presenting the shape design and elastomer bearings, which functioned as a joint connecting sub-structures and upper-structures with a railway bridge bearing systems. The elastomeric spherical bearing shaped and composed of alternated 17-layered metal shim plates and 18-layered elastomer plates, respectively. The elastomeric spherical bearing a high compressive load for perpendicular axis to layered plates and flexible motions are provided coincidently for other axes. The three types of elastomers, which were developed due to a designed shear modules were applied. Nonlinear analysis based on the material properties of designed bearing were accomplished. Therefore, the Nonlinear Analysis results were compared with the calculation results and the optimized shapes were designed.

Many highway bridges in Korea need seismic retrofit because only one decade has passed since the seismic design criteria was introduced. In this experimental study, the effectiveness of base isolation bearings was discussed for the seismic retrofit of the highway bridges. Four real scale RC pier specimens were constructed for the test. These RC piers didn't have seismic details. Except for one RC pier for the pilot test, three types of bearings such as Pot bearing, Rubber bearing (RB), Lead-rubber bearing (LRB) were applied to the other RC piers respectively. The RC pier with Pot bearing means current state of the prototype bridge that is not retrofitted seismically. And two RC piers with RB or LRB mean assumed states of the prototype bridge that are retrofitted seismically. To simulate dynamic behavior of these RC piers under earthquake loads, Pseudo-dynamic test method was used.
The additional axial force of CWR(continuous welded rail) is occurred by structure-track interaction, in reverse, fixed supports of structure are applied the large load by that. Ratio of load which transferred on support through the bridge superstructure with one-side REJ by acceleration and braking load are stated in High-Speed Rail Design Criteria(2005). On the other hand the horizontal forces of support delivered to the load due to thermal loads has been no report about the criteria. Therefore, this study was performed the review of the reaction and displacement on support by structure-track interaction in a special bridge(composite brdiges, 45+55+55+45=200m) with REJ acting on the temperature load. As a result, because fixed support of a special bridge or a continuous bridge with REJ under the temperature load which is constant load has been acted the large lateral load by structure-track interaction, when determining the fixed bearing capacity of structure should be reflected in the results to secure the safety of structures was confirmed.
